Courtroom Calling: Col. Greg Thompson and Katie BakerPractice may not always make perfect, but at Cedarville University, it launches futures. The University's mock trial team is preparing students for legal careers and inspiring them to model the love of Christ in the courtroom.Colonel (Ret.) Greg Thompson, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, brought his extensive legal background to Cedarville as a Professor of Criminal Justice. With experience in criminal prosecution, defense, and national security law — as well as time coaching mock trial at the U.S. Air Force Academy — he was well-equipped to launch the University's mock trial program. One of the first students on the team was Katie Baker, a passionate social work major who found her calling in the courtroom.Katie, now heading to the University of Akron School of Law, first stepped into the world of legal advocacy through Cedarville's new mock trial team. Inspired by her internship in children's services, she witnessed firsthand the heartache — and hope — found in family law. Her drive to stand in the gap for hurting children and families only deepened through the team.Mock trial at Cedarville is more than competition. It's a training ground for future advocates built on biblical truth and a commitment to excellence. Students wrestle through 250-page case files, face unpredictable courtroom twists, and stand with poise, shaped by Col. Thompson's guidance and reminders that every courtroom mirrors the deeper truth that Christ stands as our advocate.Though the team didn't claim a championship trophy this year, they competed with heart against top-tier programs — and earned respect for both their skill and the faith that underpins it.In just two seasons, Cedarville's mock trial team has built an extraordinary legacy where faith meets advocacy and students like Katie step boldly into the future.Hear Katie and Col. Thompson share the team's formative and funny stories on this week's episode of the Cedarville Stories podcast.https://share.transistor.fm/s/d8a69d2chttps://youtu.be/twmISdeAsJk

Artificial Intelligence is now part of daily life. AI has improved efficiency, predicted outcomes with accuracy, and even created innovations. At the same time, however, AI and its capabilities are evolving faster than the laws and regulations governing its use. AI presents new challenges to intellectual property—from inventorship and authorship issues to liability. This panel will explore the intersection of AI and Intellectual Property rights. In the copyright context, it must be determined who is the owner of AI-generated works to whether it is fair use to train AI models using copyrighted works. In the patent context, it must be determined whether AI can be an inventor and whether AI can or should be used to assist in the drafting of patents. It is also not settled who has the power to regulate AI—the USPTO and other federal agencies, or only Congress? These are all questions that will eventually be answered by the courts or legislation. This panel will explore these questions and more as it looks to try and answer how we can move forward in a world filled with AI while ensuring the protection of intellectual property rights.Featuring:Mr. Jordan Gimbel, Associate General Counsel, MicrosoftHon. Reducing the cost of prescription drugs has been a bipartisan priority for years. One recent effort is the Preserve Access to Affordadble Generics and Biosimilars Act (S. 142), sponsored by Sen. Klobuchar with the support of Sen. Grassley and others. This bill would give the FTC new authority to investigate settlements between branded and generic drug companies that delay generic/biosimilar market entry and are deemed anticompetitive. The bill proposes allowing the FTC to make factual findings and liability determinations that the district court applies when computing damages. Our expert panel will discuss whether this bifurcated administrative/judicial arrangement can be squared with SEC v. Jarkesy and more broadly discuss issues around patent settlements in the bio/pharma space. Featuring:Matthew S. Hellman, Partner, Jenner & BlockWilliam M. Tuesday, October 5, 2021, Court Leader's Advantage Podcast Episode A cyberattack is truly a different kind of threat, but that threat is real and growing. It takes a different kind of approach to defend against such an attack. Different questions need to be asked well before an attack occurs. Cybersecurity experts advise that having responses to these questions is essential to effectively preparing for and responding to an attack. In this episode we are talking to several court professionals who have endured a cyberattack on their court. We will be exploring questions on how to prepare your court to defend against an attack: · What questions do you need to ask your IT professionals? · How do you convince a funding body to spend the needed resources on cybersecurity? · Do you have a realistic plan to conduct court business without your case management system or even computers for weeks possibly even months? · How can you effectively train staff to respond to a cyberattack? · Does your Continuity of Operations Plan (your COOP) even address the implications of a cyberattack? Today's Panelists Kevin Bowling is the Court Administrator for the 20th Circuit Court in Ottawa County, Michigan. Tuesday, September 21, 2021, Court Leader's Advantage Podcast Episode Threats from cyberattacks can be easily ignored by courts. There are many rationalizations: “Our court is too small to worry about cyberattacks” “We have a great firewall that keeps everything out” “Our employees change their passwords every three months just like clockwork” “Everyone has been told not to open suspicious email attachments” Often the perspective can be “We're good” You are good until the morning you fire up your desktop only to find a black screen with the words “pay $50,000 in bitcoin and we will send you the codes to unlock your case management system.” Cyber-experts continue to advise that it isn't a matter of “if,” it is a matter of “when.” In this episode we are talking to court professionals, several of whom have suffered through a cyberattack in their court. We'll be exploring questions including: · How did the court respond to the cyberattack? · What could management have done differently? · What could they have done to have prevented a cyberattack in the first place? · What advice does our panel of experts have for the rest of us? Ep. 127: Elliott Lewis is an assistant professor of journalism at SUNY Purchase College in Westchester County, New York, where he teaches media law and broadcast news. He joined the faculty in 2015 after a 20-year career as a television reporter, anchor, producer and assignment editor. Elliott is a 2013 graduate of The University of Akron School of Law in Ohio, where he also served as a part-time faculty member in the university’s School of Communication. He is licensed to practice law in the state of New York. Before becoming a law student, Elliott was a freelance television news reporter in Washington, DC. Over the years, his clients included WJLA-TV, BET News, CNN, Associated Press Television, and the Washington bureaus of Tribune Broadcasting and Hearst Television. Prior to moving to the nation's capital, Elliott’s career took him to a number of cities around the country. He has worked as a reporter for WKMG-TV in Orlando, WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, KPTV in Portland, KGTV in San Diego, and KTVN in Reno. Elliott attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he studied Spanish and communications. When not in class, he could be found running the audio board at the campus radio station, working in the university’s public relations office, and delivering farm news for the College of Agriculture’s radio news service. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland-University College.  Early in his career, Elliott joined the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and later served on the NABJ Board of Directors from 2003-2007. In addition, he has been an ex-officio board member of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute, a leading journalism think-tank located in St. Petersburg, Florida. With Fade, television journalist Elliott Lewis weaves his memoirs as a black-and-white biracial American with the voices of dozens of multiracial people who are challenging how we think and speak about race today. His interviews illuminate a variety of coping strategies and reveal stark generational differences in the ways mixed race people have come to terms with their identity. A comprehensive look at the multiracial state of the union, Fade tackles hot-button issues such as the often complicated lives of multiracial people in communities of color, interracial dating, transracial adoption, "black versus biracial" identities, and the birth of a national multiracial movement. Elliott also shares his own moving - and often humorous -firsthand experiences with race, along with intimate stories from those at the forefront of nationwide efforts to formally recognize the multiracial population.
