A new exhibition at the Muzeum Sztuki gallery in Łódź by contemporary artist Agnieszka Kurant focuses on the “simultaneously creative and destructive role of error in the face of modern automation and algorithmisation”. John Beauchamp speaks to curator Jakub Gawkowski about this avant-garde critique of neo-liberalism and the seemingly indivisible lines of natural/artificial as well as pitching the individual against the collective. Bernie endorses Biden. Then Warren endorses Biden. Over 22 million Americans have now filed for unemployment. The United States has more cases than the next four countries with the largest outbreaks. Rabid right-wing death cult enthusiasts protest stay at home orders and other restrictions on their individual ‘Merican freedom. Notable Protests took place in Michigan, Ohio, New York, and North Carolina featuring - you guessed it - “Don’t Tread on Me” banners, Confederate flags, guns, and Fox News talking points. They want to get back to work and embrace whatever the virus may bring. Not only does this show the anti-human tendency at the base of the Republican base, but it also shows the bankruptcy of right-wing ideology and the shock doctrine. In the wake of more than 30,000 deaths and staggering unemployment rates, some people think that their only choice is to risk their lives to get back to their crappy jobs. More protests are planned for Texas, Oregon, and California. I sure as hell someone will be tracking these clusters of pro-pandemic tools. According to a new Quinnipiac poll, 85% of Americans are either very concerned or somewhat concerned that they or someone they know will get the coronavirus - up 31% from March. A Pew Research poll found that 73% of Americans think the worst impacts from the coronavirus are yet to come. In the same poll, 66% worry that the government will lift restrictions too soon, worsening the outbreak. On Thursday, the PA Dept. of Health reported that the Commonwealth had 1,245 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 27,735. At least 707 people have died as a direct result of the coronavirus. About half of PA deaths have occurred in nursing homes, which is causing alarm across the state. All residents at the Montgomery County-based nursing home, Phoebe Wyncote had to be evacuated to a facility in Lehigh County because so many of the staff tested positive for the virus. As of Wednesday, 77 nursing home residents have died. That’s 64% of all deaths in MontCo. 306 long-term care facilities have confirmed coronavirus cases. At least 3,290 residents and at least 394 employees have been infected. At least 365 long-term care deaths have been reported. The PA GOP continues to be committed to the crazy train. Gov. Wolf yesterday announced plans to veto a bill passed by the Republican legislature that would have businesses open sooner than Wolf’s April 30 date. On Monday protesters from “Reopen Pennsylvania” will be doubling down on the PA GOP’s and Trump’s rhetoric on reopening the economy. This astroturfed movement has connections to Betsy DeVos funded organizations in Michigan. And good news for anti-planet industries. Shell says that it will bring back 500 workers at the Beaver County cracker plant next week to continue construction. Beaver County has seen recent spikes in coronavirus cases. This week, NASA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Apollo 13’s “successful failure.” Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970, in an attempt to bring a third crew of U.S. astronauts to the moon. However, just three days into the mission, an explosion vented much the ship’s oxygen supply into space. The crew carried out a harrowing emergency return to Earth in one of the most dramatic stories of the early space race. Given the coronavirus shutdowns, NASA has released a documentary called Apollo 13: Home Safe, available free online. Artist Agnieszka Kurant and researcher Tobias Rees in conversation with e-flux journal Contributing Editor Elvia Wilk. Agnieszka Kurant explores how complex social, economic and ecological systems can operate in ways that confuse distinctions between fiction and reality or nature and culture. Probing collective intelligence, surveillance capitalism, AI and the evolution of culture, labor and creativity, she investigates automation, crowdsourcing and data exploitation in the context of art production. Her works often behave like living organisms, self-organized complex systems or bachelor machines. Her past projects include a commission for the façade of the Guggenheim Museum (2015) and a solo exhibition at the Sculpture Center, New York (2013). In 2010 she co-represented Poland at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Her work was featured in exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, Guggenheim Bilbao, Tate Modern, Witte de With, Moderna Museet, MUMOK, Bonner Kunstverein, The Kitchen, Frieze Projects and Performa Biennial. She is an artist in residence at MIT CAST and a fellow of the Smithsonian Institute and the Berggruen Institute. Tobias Rees is the Reid Hoffman Professor of Humanities at the New School for Social Research, Director at the Los Angeles-based Berggruen Institute, and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. Rees finds himself intrigued by situations that are not reducible to the already thought and known—by events, small ones or large ones, that set the taken for granted in motion and thereby provoke unanticipated openings for which no one has words yet. In his writings he seeks to capture something of the at times wild, at other times tender, almost fragile openness that rules as long as the new/different has not yet gained any stable contours—when it is pure movement. Over the last decade his research has explored possibilities of practicing the human sciences after the figure of the human on which the human sciences (and art) has been contingent failed us: The human—the object of the human sciences is a figure not known before the late eighteenth century. He is the author of Designs for an Anthropology of the Contemporary (2008), Plastic Reason (2016), and most recently of After Ethnos (2018).

We venture out of our comfort zone in this first ever episode devoted entirely to cider. Joined by Co-Owner and Head Cidermaker, Joe Getz, we set up shop at Kurant Cider in Philadelphia. It was an amazing learning experience for all of us as we talked about the cider making process, history, and of course the story and goings-on of Kurant. Dan reported on some news, including companies getting on on these “high times”. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted an all cider edition of Libation or Fabrication. Steph kept the educational theme going with an edition of Know Your…Cider. Plus, we sampled an array of Kurant’s offerings – including a very special tasting in this episode’s edition of Last Call (available only to patrons.) Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do! CAST Visiting Artist Agnieszka Kurant joins Stefan Helmreich, professor of Anthropology; Caroline Jones, professor of History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture and Art; and Adam Haar Horowitz, master’s student and research assistant in the Fluid Interfaces Group, to discuss the idea of collective intelligence in relation to emerging technology, artistic inquiry, and social and cultural movements. Kurant will reflect on outsourcing her artworks to human and non-human collective intelligence and the system of profit-sharing she has created, artworks as complex systems or collective tamagotchis emulating life, and the observable evolution of individual authorship, culture, nature, labor and society. Haar Horowitz will touch on the collective in relationship to experience research in the neurosciences and experience production in the arts. Helmreich will discuss metaphors of collective human action derived from physics, computer science, animal worlds, and fluid dynamics, and will reflect on the politics of these framings. Jones will address the curious invocation of “intelligence” in discussions of aggregated agency, with specific reference to the so-named “mobile brain” or “immune brain” of the distributed system (mostly outside the cranium) that learns, remembers, and teaches, negotiating between tolerance and threat in relation to xeno-bacteria. The panel will be moderated by Nick Montfort, professor of Comparative Media Studies/Writing.
Viejo is a barrel aged cider made by Joe Getz of Kurant Cider. This cider is a single varietal cider made with Winchester apples. Described on Kurants website as: "a blend of wild fermented ciders created by using some of the best apples we could source in Pennsylvania. The ciders used to blend Viejo were aged for 6-18 months in oak before being used in the finished product. Viejo is a still cider meaning non-carbonated. It's meant to be served with a long pour from great heights to aerate and add effervescence." Joe in the barrel room[/caption] In this chat taste and talk Viejo and follow up with Joe on the opening of the Fishtown taproom, which much like Viejo took over a year to build out. A Porron is used by Kurant Cider for in high pours of cider/sidra A 19th century carriage house was renovated into the new Taproom, which has an upstairs (The Attic) and a main floor serving area. Besides making cider at Kurant, Joe is also the Vice President of the Pennsylvania Cider Guild, the commonwealth's organizing body for cider producers and apple growers in PA.
