In this heartfelt episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, we sit down with singer-songwriter Abigail Cartright and her husband, veteran producer and engineer Ika, to talk about the deep emotional journey behind Abigail's new album, Miracle Year, with her band Ana Mirabilis — a loose yet beautifully bonded collective of Ojai musicians and artists. With echoes of Lana del Rey, Beach House, Mitski, Radiohead, and decades of artistic experience, Miracle Year is more than an album — it's a story of transformation. Abigail opens up about the personal losses, illness, and depression she endured, and how these trials became the fuel for an artistic breakthrough. We also talk about growing up in creative families, the merging of music and visual arts, and the surprising way Abigail and Ika's lives first intersected — through her father, many years ago and far away in New York. It's a conversation about resilience, love, and the healing power of art.We did not talk about the the Dreyfus Affair, the NBA playoff picture or Maine's arctic char population. You can listen to Abigail's music on Spotify or Apple Music. The vinyl album will be released soon.

This episode explores the Dreyfus Affair, a pivotal event in French history that exposed deep-rooted anti-Semitism and injustice within the military and judiciary. Centered on Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army officer wrongfully accused of treason, the case sparked intense public debate and led to significant social and political ramifications in France. Ultimately, the affair highlighted the power of public advocacy in challenging institutional failures and laid the groundwork for modern human rights movements.
On Julien Benda's famous 1927 work. [Patreon Exclusive] We continue on the theme of 'Intellectuals and the Public' by discussing the often cited by little read The Treason of the Clerks. We ask: If Benda was responding to the intellectuals' role in the Dreyfus Affair and WWI, was he already a man out of his time? What are intellectuals' proper role in society? Can they be abstract universalist moralists? Benda laments the end of humanism – can we endorse this lament, even if things are too far gone now? Is Benda a centrist dad, urging us all not to get too passionate or engaged? How do Benda's ideas related to Gramsci's notion of the traditional versus the organic intellectual? If Benda was critical of the 'realism' of his day – as opposed to the detached ethics of pre-20th century intellectuals – how might we use Benda to critique the cynicism of today? In 1894, French artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus was falsely accused of passing military secrets to Germany. These swirling accusations and the subsequent degradation and humiliation suffered by Dreyfus constitutes one of history's most notorious incidents of antisemitism. Maurice Samuels speaks to Danny Bird about why the military top brass were so determined to persecute the Jewish officer, and how the Dreyfus affair polarised France. [originally published on Patreon February 27, 2024] I begin with an extended meditation about Arbenz's position in 1951 and the state of the Guatemalan economy. This leads to a discussion of Decree 900, the agrarian reform bill which was passed in 1952. I discuss what it did and did not entail and compare it to Mexico's agrarian reform law as well as the US Alliance for Progress recommendations later. Despite this, United Fruit Company's leadership began to close ranks and draw up battle plans. That leads us to a natural question: who exactly owned UFC, anyway? I discuss UFC ownership particularly through the various boards of directors both before and after the Zemurray era. Unsurprisingly, it consists of many Boston Brahmins and, for lack of a better term, the Power Elite from the US, the UK, and Germany. At one point, the Swedes try, successfully, to buy in. I make a major tangent via UFC vice president Arthur Pollan and his feud with Honduran communist Manuel Cálix Herrera, whose story I also share. Then, discussing Zemurray's new guard, I bring up Hillyer Vaughn Rolston and the curious case of the Rolston Letter. The Rolston Letter is like a mini-Dreyfus Affair, which occurred shortly before la gran huelga de 1954, the great strike of 1954 in Honduras. I analyze various analyses of the Rolston letter which allows us to discuss the Honduran coup of 2009. This, in turn, allows us to discuss the less-known ZEDES, or economic development zones, which are attempting to break up and sell off Honduran sovereignty piece by piece, as in the case of Próspera in Roatán, Honduras. Finally, I discuss the occulted nature of family trusts and how the blood-soaked stolen wealth of Central America exists in perpetuity in New England sending many a failson and faildaughter to clown colleges or academic sinecures for perpetuity. note: I wrote the baleada thread after I wrote this episode, and it weaves through much of this history - https://twitter.com/JimmyFalunGong/status/1755993585890054451 Songs: Wealth Won't Save Your Soul by Hank Williams Jr. El Machangay, a song from the Great Strike of 1954 Verde by Manzanita
Abigail Pogrebin is joined by Maurice Samuels, author of a biography which analyzes Alfred Dreyfus's complex relationship to Judaism and antisemitism and illustrates the profound effect of the Dreyfus Affair on the lives of Jews around the world.
People experience and comprehend time in different fashions in response to events occurring around them. The experience of time and the speed at which change is perceived to occur may alter during eras of crisis. Time can feel compressed for some and broad or flat for others. These comprehensions of time in turn give form to political views and provide impetus for actions in the political sphere. Political reforms may seem to fast and without foundation for some and not nearly fast enough for those desperately seeking change. Using French thinkers and activists of the radical left and right between the Dreyfus Affair and the First World War as a case study, Dr. Alexandra Paulin-Booth argues that time provides an important means of exploring how concepts such as nationalism, revolution, and social change were understood at the turn of the century. In her latest work, Time and Radical Politics in France: from the Dreyfus Affair to the First World War (Manchester University Press, 2023) Dr. Paulin-Booth argues French political and intellectual figures differed in opinion as to whether a glorious future was within their grasp or perhaps the past promised salvation for the embattled French Third Republic. In the age of absolutism, France had towered over European life and politics -- the only nation that was a major land power on the Continent and a colonial metropole with an overseas empire at the same time. Yet by 1900, tossed about by repeated revolutions and coups and torn asunder by often petty internal culture wars, France was falling behind its rivals to become almost a second-rate power. Once the Radical Party rode the Dreyfus Affair into government, they had to rush to reposition France to try to take advantage of the tensions and instability in the Balkans, and prepare the nation to possibly face off once more against their archrival across the Rhine -- Germany. Liberté, égalité, fraternité. This is the French Republic's motto. Liberty and equality are also in the first article of the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" of 1789. The French are very proud of that heritage, of France's struggle during and after the Revolution. They think of their homeland as the cradle of liberty in Europe, as a welcoming and understanding land, ruled by reason and intellect, rather than by prejudice and bigotry. Sadly, those clear and healthy waters of freedom and justice often got muddied over the years. In the late nineteenth century, France was a wounded country. Her honour had been tarnished in 1870-71 and her population was deeply traumatized by the civil war that ensued. Fears of an enemy, and of traitors, was at an all time high. This very specific phase mixed with an element older than France herself: antisemitism. In 1894, captain Alfred Dreyfus would suffer greatly as a consequence of those elements. Although there are some saving graces, and some might even say a silver lining, this whole series of events really are France's shame!Timecodes:Introduction03:38 - La Belle Époque08:48 - Alfred Dreyfus, Jewish French officer14:28 - Dreyfus Arrested21:17 - L'Affaire begins26:07 - J'accuse...!34:03 - The Rennes Trial39:20 - Rehabilitation44:10 - ConclusionMusic: Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs, composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully, arranged and performed by Jérôme Arfouche.Artwork: "The traitor: Degradation of Alfred Dreyfus, degradation in the Morland Court of the military school in Paris" front page of the illustrated supplement of the Petit Journal, Sunday, January 13, 1895.Recommended link: The Siècle podcast by David H. Antisemitism has been on the rise in the United States for about the past two decades – and 2021 was the highest year on record for documented reports of violence, harassment, and vandalism directed toward Jews. That's according to data from the nonprofit Anti-Defamation League, which has been actively monitoring and documenting incidents of antisemitism and publishing this information since 1979. We go back into history to add some context to the world we find ourselves in, to an incident that unfolded in France in the late 1800s and early 1900s known as The Dreyfus Affair.

Alfred Dreyfus. In this true crime world we hear terms like “Miranda rights” or “Amber Alert” or a “Dreyfus case”. These names come from true life situations and as we invoke their names, we should hear their stories. Here is the story of Alfred Dreyfus, who endured anti-Semitism and a wrongful conviction. He was later exonerated, but not before his whole life was destroyed. Since then the disc has remained a mystery as no one has been able to decipher the writings upon it, nor who made the object, what was it used for, and even if it's a genuine archaeological discovery or a clever fake. (The Phaistos Disc) *** Usually you learn that a place is haunted simply because people say it is. It's common knowledge around the town or neighborhood… but when the government of your country says a place is haunted, you'd better danged well listen. Such is the case with India's Bhangarh Fort. (Bhangarh Fort – The Most Haunted Place in India) *** At the end of 1894 French army captain Alfred Dreyfus, a graduate of the École Polytechnique, and a Jew of Alsatian origin, was accused of handing secret documents to the Imperial German military. After a closed trial, he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on the dreaded Devil's Island. But that's just the beginning of the story that later became known as The Dreyfus Affair. This week's episode looks at:Edith Nesbit: British children's author, novelist, and poet. Among many other stories, she wrote, '5 Children and It' which I talk about here. The Dreyfus Affair: a sandal that captured the world's attention (and was obliquely references in 'The Railway Children').The TV Show: starring Jenny Agutter in BBC black and white glory. The Film (1970): there are, of course, many movie adaptations, but this one is the classic, and no film review of any of the others fails to mention that! The Railway itself: the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (yes, pronounced 'Keith-ley'), a fantastic place to visit in West Yorkshire, and home to the films.I hope you enjoy this - just over thirty minute - episode... and the poems. There is no better entree into pre-WWI France than the sordid Dreyfus Affair. The whole story in all its gory detail including its implications for the France-Russia alliance and the echoes of 1871 casting a cloud over 1895 France. Anti-semitism, frame ups, spies, corruption, incompetence, trials, retrials, people of conscience, and echoes a century later.
The Dreyfus Affair was one of the most important events in Modern Jewish History, and its repercussions and reverberations are still with us today. In this class we retell the story of Alfred Dreyfus: how a French army captain was falsely accused of espionage, how antisemitism defined his trial, and how the Jewish and global responses shaped the major world events of the Twentieth Century and beyond. And how does God fit into the story?

This week we are joined by legal expert Legalman from The Quash podcast to discuss an era defining moment in French history. Supposedly the moment Theodor Herzl had conceived of a Jewish state, this crisis culminated when the French Military railroaded a Jewish officer named Alfred Dreyfus for spying for the German Empire and sentenced him to life on "Devil's Island" off the coast of Guiana. The media and social backlash nearly tore the fragile Third French Republic apart and caused many of Europe's Jews to believe their time as members of European society in full standing was coming to an end. We probably have one of the most unique takes on this story on the web. Must listen! David, Nathan, and Nick continue their journey through Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, this time discussing the third volume, The Guermantes Way. While this one might very well be “a middle book” — and by proximity, this episode “a middle episode” — there is continued brilliance to be enjoyed (if one can make it through the marathon salon scenes, that is). Come for the deep dives on The Dreyfus Affair, stay for the masterful ending. And just remember: You're halfway home.

Émile Zola was one of France's most celebrated writers, yet his name always carried controversy. He was unafraid to write about society's taboos, and to challenge the laws of the government. Zola put his life at risk when he became publicly involved in the infamous Dreyfus Affair, and defended the persecuted Jewish captain by writing an open letter to the President. The bold action led to a violent witch-hunt against Zola, and his life was put in mortal danger. Then, just four years after his letter, Zola was found dead in his Parisian house — allegedly killed by carbon monoxide. But in 1957 a newspaper published a deathbed confession from an antisemitic chimney sweep who admitted that he was responsible for killing Émile Zola…. Learn more about your ad choices.
