This episode is brought to you by Your Clockwise Week—a personalized weekly structure built around your actual life, not an ideal one. If your week feels full but not fitting, you can learn more at mikevardy.com/yourclockwiseweek.Most of us have been told that success is about mindset — stay positive, visualize the outcome, trust the process. But what if that advice is quietly working against you? What if the more honest — and more useful — move is to look directly at what could go wrong, name it clearly, and then do something about it?That's the argument Kyle Austin Young makes in his book Success is a Numbers Game. Kyle isn't asking you to become a pessimist. He's asking you to stop pretending uncertainty doesn't exist — and start using it as a lever. This episode gets into probability, decision-making, and what it actually means to give yourself better odds.Six Discussion PointsThe reason generic optimism fails: unnamed, unfocused anxiety doesn't disappear when you think positive — it just goes undergroundWhy "success is a numbers game" isn't about obsessing over data, but about acknowledging that ignoring uncertainty is its own kind of riskThe averaging trap: multiplying the odds of what has to go right reveals a predicted failure even when each individual step feels doableHow the Miracle on Ice reframes as probability rather than miracle — and what the US hockey program's subsequent growth tells us about the compounding effect of one winThe success diagram as a practical tool: mapping what has to go right, identifying the potential bad outcomes beneath each step, and using creativity to reduce those risksWhy AI is most useful in this framework as a brainstorming partner — helping you surface obstacles and workarounds you might not think to name on your ownThree Connection PointsSuccess is a Numbers Game by Kyle Austin YoungConnect with Kyle on LinkedInStop Managing Your Time. Start Crafting Your Time Instead. A complementary piece designed to help you structure your time so the pauses Kyle recommends actually have a place to landWhat Kyle is really describing is the difference between hoping things go well and actively improving the odds that they will. That's a distinction that matters whether you're chasing a career goal, building a creative practice, or simply trying to follow through on what you said you'd do. The success diagram isn't a complicated tool — it's a focused one. And focus, as Kyle puts it, is what lets you live your life and still recognize the right moment when it arrives. If this conversation shifted something for you, I'd encourage you to sit with it — and maybe grab the book. If this episode resonated, I'm exploring ideas like these more deeply in my upcoming book, Productiveness. You can follow along as it takes shape at mikevardy.com/productiveness.

Most advice says work harder and keep trying. We put that to the test and reveal why so many smart teams still miss: they average their confidence across steps instead of multiplying their true odds. With award-winning strategy consultant and author Kyle Austin Young, we break down a simple, rigorous way to change results by changing probability—without needing a PhD or a spreadsheet marathon. We start by exposing the averaging trap and building a clean success diagram: a left-to-right map of every step that must go right to hit your goal. Then we estimate the likelihood of each step, multiply to reveal real odds, and hunt for the failure modes stealing your probability. Kyle calls it “think negative” thinking: not doom and gloom, but a disciplined scan for what could go wrong—glitches, delays, weak offers, misreads—so you can de-risk them in advance. You'll hear how he used this method to land a leadership job at 21 by neutralizing age bias, shifting interviews to future-focused plans, and mirroring team language drawn from their favorite books.Inside this episode, we cover:➡️ The 34% Trap: Why most leaders mathematically overestimate their chance of success and how to fix it.➡️ The "Beard & Book" Strategy: How Kyle probability-hacked his way into a Director role at age 21.➡️ Think Negative: Why identifying "failure modes" is the ultimate creative tool for CEOs.➡️ Tuition Costs: How to view high-stakes mistakes as the price of your leadership education.➡️ The Revenge Tour: Lessons in humility and strategic adjustment from trout fishing. We dig into a nonprofit case where donations fell off a cliff. Agencies tried fresh stories, but a success diagram pointed somewhere less glamorous: a deliverability glitch that blocked a major inbox provider. Fixing the pipe beat rewriting the message. From there, we explore Hail Mary diagrams for stalled goals, when to pause versus quit, and how to stack smaller wins—bylines, relationships, proof—so big moves become high-odds plays. Along the way, Kyle's stories about resilience, iteration, and the math behind confidence will give you tools to raise your odds in hiring, product launches, fundraising, and personal goals like marathon training. If you're ready to stop guessing, map your steps, and steal probability back from failure, this conversation gives you the playbook. What if success isn't personal at all — but mathematical?Kyle Austin Young reveals why so many intelligent, capable people fail to reach their goals — even when they do everything “right.” Drawing from his own experience of repeated layoffs, personal burnout, and rebuilding his life through consulting, Kyle introduces a powerful framework for rethinking success through probability rather than motivation.Kyle explains how overwhelm, survival mode, and mental clutter don't just affect our wellbeing — they distort our ability to make good decisions. Kyle Austin Young discovered through two devastating layoffs that success is not determined by desire alone, but by understanding probability and systematically managing risk. Most people fatally underestimate their odds by averaging probabilities rather than multiplying them—a mathematical error explaining why nine out of ten businesses fail. Kyle's consulting methodology asks not just What am I hired to do? but What can I do to make this succeed? By identifying potential failures and creatively eliminating them before they occur, he developed probability hacking, a framework that transforms how people approach obstacles and achievement. Kyle's philosophy centers on strategic risk anticipation rather than blind positivity. Real-world examples—from a nonprofit's hidden email glitch causing donation decline, to Bic's unwanted women's pens, to Edison's thousands of failed experiments—prove systematic de-risking works better than motivation alone. He advocates thinking negative as rigorous analysis of what could go wrong, followed by creative prevention. Repeated attempts, not talent, separate successful people from failures, and paused goals often generate unexpected successes, like YouTube evolving from a failed dating site. His personal path of pursuing smaller milestones before his larger goal demonstrates how systematic sequencing builds assets that make success inevitable. Kyle Austin Young's mission is empowering people to pursue meaningful goals through probability-based thinking rather than affirmations alone. Success comes through better odds management, not greater talent. To learn his complete framework, visit his website and grab his book Success Is a Numbers Game: Achieve Bigger Goals by Changing the Odds on Amazon. Start today by identifying one risk for every goal and brainstorming one creative solution. Any day can be your fresh start when you commit to changing your odds.
