For more than a year, a seven-foot creature with glowing red eyes and folded wings terrorized Point Pleasant, West Virginia—and just weeks after the sightings stopped, the Silver Bridge collapsed and killed 46 people, leaving the town to wonder whether the Mothman had been a monster, a warning, or something far worse.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/RedEyesOfMothmanREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8s2fxtFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Most everyone is familiar with the King James Bible, but did you know that King James also wrote a book on demonology during the witch hunts and trials? Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November 15, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness, hosted by Darren Marlar, moves from a winged cryptid haunting a West Virginia river town to a Georgia teenager found dead inside a rolled wrestling mat, a Minnesota newlywed who vanished from a restaurant parking lot, and a king of England who wrote a manual on demons. It opens with the Mothman, first reported on November 15, 1966, when two young married couples driving past an abandoned World War II TNT plant near Point Pleasant, West Virginia, spotted a six- or seven-foot gray figure with folded wings and glowing red eyes that rose into the air and pursued their car down Highway 62 at over 100 miles per hour. That same night, contractor Newell Partridge of Salem watched his television fill with a strange pattern before his dog Bandit chased two red eyes toward the hay barn and disappeared forever, and the next day Roger Scarberry described passing a large dog's body near the city limits that was gone minutes later. Over the following year roughly 100 people, including Marcella Bennett, reported the creature alongside UFO sightings and men in black, and on December 15, 1967, the 700-foot Silver Bridge linking Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed during rush hour and killed 46 people, cementing the belief that the Mothman had been a harbinger of the disaster. From there the episode turns to Kendrick Johnson, the 17-year-old three-sport athlete found dead on January 11, 2013, stuffed head-down inside a rolled wrestling mat in the old gym at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. Investigators ruled the death an accidental positional asphyxia, theorizing the boy fell in reaching for a shoe, but his 19-inch shoulders could not fit through the mat's 14-inch opening, an hour of footage from all four gym cameras was missing and altered, and his organs were found removed and replaced with newspaper. A second and third autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to his neck and right chest, a fabricated confession recording sold to his family for $1,000 was exposed as a hoax by Sheriff Ashley Paulk, and the case, which once entangled FBI agent Randy Bell's sons Brandon and Brian Bell, was officially reopened on March 10, 2021.Vanishing from a restaurant parking lot is what happened next to Jerrilyn Mullins, a 28-year-old Oakdale, Minnesota, newlywed who left the dinner table at a Chi Chi's in Richfield around 9:00 p.m. on November 15, 1978, and was last seen by her husband's coworker Patrick Melbourne, who said he drove her 22 miles back to a Howard Johnson's and left her there. Her decomposed body surfaced in a Lake Elmo swamp on June 30, 1979, identified through dental records and jewelry, with two autopsies unable to determine a cause of death though her stomach contents placed her killing within an hour of leaving the restaurant. Melbourne, who carried a long record of sexual assault allegations and was later convicted of crimes against a 10-year-old girl, remained the prime suspect; husband Ron Mullins lost a 1989 wrongful-death civil suit for lack of evidence, and the Washington County case stayed unsolved when Melbourne died in 2015.The episode closes with King James VI and I, who returned from a 1589 trip to Denmark obsessed with witchcraft and published Daemonologie in 1597, the only treatise of its kind written by a reigning monarch. In its pages he catalogued the signs of demonic possession, describing superhuman strength exceeding six men, iron-hard skin that could not be pierced, and victims speaking languages they never learned, while arguing that demons inhabit the corpses of the pious and that only prayer and fasting, not Catholic ritual, could repel them. He acknowledged werewolves as men suffering an excess of melancholy rather than cursed creatures, dismissed fairies as illusions sent by the Devil, fixed the ratio of female to male witches at 20 to 1 by reasoning that women were more easily deceived as Eve had been, and produced a work that fueled the European and colonial witch hunts and shaped the weird sisters of William Shakespeare's Macbeth.
Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Our shout-out today goes to John Lecy from Lake Elmo, MN. Thanks for your partnership in Project23. We cannot do this without donors like you. Our text today is 1 Corinthians 12:4-6. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. — 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Have you ever noticed how quickly diversity in the church becomes competition? Paul addresses that question through a subtle yet profound move. Instead of addressing behavior first, he points to theology using the triune God. In just three verses, he sketches one of the clearest Trinitarian patterns in all the New Testament. There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. Varieties of service, but the same Lord. Varieties of activities, but the same God. This is not careless repetition. It is an intentional structure that Paul will use to illustrate how God's community and its unique gifts work within the church. Here is the nuance a lot of readers miss: diversity in the church flows from unity within God himself. The Trinity is not uniform, but perfectly united—distinct persons with a shared purpose and no rivalry. God's community is one of the rare places in life where unity should be perfectly expressed through diversity. But when believers compete over visibility, rank gifts by status, or measure spirituality by prominence, we contradict the character of the God who gives the gifts and the unity they were meant to express. Your gift is not a personal asset to leverage. It is a grace to be stewarded by God to the community. They are gifts we steward for the benefit of others and for God's glory. Then notice Paul's closing line: "the same God who empowers them all in everyone." Every gift stewarded by every believer is sustained by him. There is no spiritual elite class in God's Church. The preacher is not better than the participant. The pastor is not better than the paritionier. God is the one who empowers, not a single believer in a church, but every believer in His church. Therefore, in the church, unity is not threatened by diversity; it is generated by it. That means your spiritual gift matters, and so does the spiritual gift you do not have. The church most clearly reflects the glory of God when diverse members serve without rivalry and depend on one another without comparison. This is not merely personality management—it is Trinitarian theology lived out in the body of Christ. So this week, intentionally encourage someone whose gift is different from yours, and thank God for how their strength complements your own. DO THIS: Thank God specifically for the way he has gifted you — and for the ways he has gifted others differently. Confess any comparison or quiet competition in your heart. ASK THIS: Do I see my gifts as personal strengths — or as grace entrusted to me? Where am I tempted to measure spiritual value by visibility? How does the unity within God reshape how I respond to diversity in the church? PRAY THIS: Father, thank you for empowering your church. Lord Jesus, direct my service toward you. Holy Spirit, distribute your gifts as you will. Guard my heart from comparison and teach me to reflect your unity in the way I serve. Amen. PLAY THIS: "What A Gift"

A federal judge in St. Paul is set to hear the case of a 25-year-old Salvadoran mother who has been in ICE detention for more than two weeks. Antonia Aguilar Maldonado, who lives in Lake Elmo with her husband and two U.S. citizen children, was detained by Homeland Security agents in July while heading to work. An immigration judge granted her release on a $10,000 bond, but ICE blocked it using a policy aimed at restricting bond for individuals who entered the U.S. without inspection. Her attorneys argue the policy shouldn't apply to her, given her age at entry and full compliance with immigration proceedings.MPR News senior reporter Sarah Thamer has been following the story and joined MPR News host Nina Moini with the latest on the case.Read more: Minnesota mother remains in ICE custody despite judge's release order

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Bob & Shannon Maxiner from Lake Elmo, MN. Thank you for partnering with us through Project23. Your support reminds us that Jesus is always more than enough. This one's for you. Our text today is Mark 6:35-44: And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. — Mark 6:35-44 The sun was setting. The crowd was huge. And the disciples were doing the math. After a few quick calculations, they concluded that there was not enough. Enough time. Enough money. Enough food. It's a rational thought about the necessary rations. Five thousand men, not counting women and children. In a remote location. But Jesus challenges their rational logic with a divine line: “You give them something to eat.” And their scarcity mentality kicks in. “Are we supposed to spend two hundred denarii on bread?” “We only have five loaves and two fish.” The disciples only perceived natural impossibilities. Jesus perceived spiritual possibilities. Scarcity sees lack—but faith sees the Lord. Jesus tells them to organize the crowd. He blesses the bread. He breaks the fish. What wasn't enough in their hands becomes more than enough in his. “And they all ate and were satisfied.” Every need was met. No one went hungry. It cost nothing. They traveled nowhere. And there were twelve baskets of leftovers. This is what happens when we surrender scarcity to the Savior. Too many believers live day-by-day with a scarcity mentality. Not enough time. Not enough talent. Not enough experience. Not enough influence. Not enough faith. And so we play it safe. We hold back. We tell Jesus to “send them/it away.” However, Jesus never operates from a place of scarcity or lack. He's not concerned about how much you have—he's asking if you'll have faith, bring what you have, and give it to him. Because what feels insufficient to us becomes sufficient in Jesus's hands. So stop living with a scarcity mentality. Live by faith. Bring what you have. Let Jesus multiply and make it more than enough. ASK THIS: Why do you think the disciples focused on what they didn't have? What does this story teach us about God's provision? Where are you tempted to say, “It's not enough”? What would it look like to trust Jesus with that area today? DO THIS: Identify one area where you've been operating from a scarcity mindset. Write it down, bring it to Jesus in prayer, and trust Him to do more than you can see. PRAY THIS: Jesus, I confess I've been focused on what I lack. Today I choose to bring what I have to you. Help me trust that your hands are better than mine. Amen. PLAY THIS: "More Than Able" by Elevation Worship
