John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Yesterday, we considered the amazing reality that the Word of God became flesh. First, let's be encouraged by the reality that Jesus is still full of grace and truth. He never changes. He is the same forever. If Jesus is full of grace, then God is full of grace. In Christ, we see the glory of God, full of grace. Isn't it encouraging to know that God is a God of grace? If Jesus is full of grace, then He has grace to spare, grace to give. Grace overflows. Second, let's consider that He's full of grace. Think of grace as the power of God to do what God requires. God's grace isn't blanket forgiveness or just positional righteousness, nor is it that God sets aside the Law or the righteous requirements of the Law. Quite the contrary, grace upholds or fulfills the law at the deepest level because it empowers the recipient of grace to not only love righteousness but to do it—in the power of the Spirit—for the glory of God. God the Father said of Jesus, “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness” (Heb. 1:9). We learn in Heb. 2:9 that Jesus received grace from God to taste death for us all. What was the grace He received? It was the power to do what God required of Him as our high priest and the propitiator for our sins. He is full of grace. He could expend that power to fulfill God's just requirements and still have infinitely more grace to give to us so we might believe in Him and live to love with Him, which God commands (1 John 3:23). We can live to love with Jesus because He is full of grace, the power to love both God and man. Third, let's consider that Jesus is full of truth. He's not full of a truth. He is full of THE Truth. Later John recorded Jesus saying, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), and “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32). It helps me to think of truth in this way: Truth is what God does, says, and sees through Jesus Christ. It's not a feeling, it's not a perception, and it's not one's personal perspective. Jesus is full of reality. If we want to see the truth about God and everything that is happening in the world, we should look at Jesus. Truth is what He's doing. Therefore, truth is what He sees happening. Since He is writing His story, His narrative is the only thing that matters. We can't rewrite the narrative to fit what we feel, think, or would like for reality to be. There's no such thing as “my reality.” There's only one reality, and it's the truth in Jesus Christ. Truth is what He is, and He's full of it—full of what the Father is doing and saying. We, therefore, have something secure to base our lives on—the truth of God revealed in Jesus Christ, the living Word of God. If Jesus is full of grace and truth and He lives in us, then we have that fullness of grace and truth residing in our lives. When God gave us the Holy Spirit, He didn't give us parts of Jesus or only certain aspects of Jesus. Jesus became our fullness. We are complete in Him (Col. 2:10), lacking nothing. His grace and truth look like love because God is love. So as we live today to love with Jesus, our lives should be filled with grace and truth. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? I hope you will receive the joy and benefit of “giving it forward,” so others may be encouraged to turn their hearts to God and live to love with Jesus. Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Fourth Week of Advent Lectionary: 199The Saint of the day is Saint John of KantySaint John of Kanty's Story John was a country lad who made good in the big city and the big university of Kraków, Poland. After brilliant studies he was ordained a priest and became a professor of theology. The inevitable opposition which saints encounter led to his being ousted by rivals and sent to be a parish priest at Olkusz. An extremely humble man, he did his best, but his best was not to the liking of his parishioners. Besides, he was afraid of the responsibilities of his position. But in the end he won his people's hearts. After some time he returned to Kraków and taught Scripture for the remainder of his life. John was a serious man, and humble, but known to all the poor of Kraków for his kindness. His goods and his money were always at their disposal, and time and again they took advantage of him. He kept only the money and clothes absolutely needed to support himself. He slept little, ate sparingly, and took no meat. He made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, hoping to be martyred by the Turks. Later John made four subsequent pilgrimages to Rome, carrying his luggage on his back. When he was warned to look after his health, he was quick to point out that, for all their austerity, the fathers of the desert lived remarkably long lives. Reflection John of Kanty is a typical saint: He was kind, humble, and generous, he suffered opposition and led an austere, penitential life. Most Christians in an affluent society can understand all the ingredients except the last: Anything more than mild self-discipline seems reserved for athletes and ballet dancers. Christmas at least is a good time to reject self-indulgence. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

God's Word for Today21 Nov, 202413 Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.- Prov 13:13-14 ESV DO HONOR THE WORDHonoring the ‘word' is shown by following good instruction from an authority having godly wisdom.[Prov 1:7] Doing so brings reward or blessing. "Word" means "instruction," or "advice" here in other translations. The Hebrew term is dā'bār, which implies a message, commandment, or instruction. This is not an explicit reference to Scripture. Although, what's written in the Bible is certainly included in the wisdom that a godly person will pursue. (Prov 6:23; Psalm 1:1–2). But, the person who laughs off such teaching brings ruin on himself. This person who "despises" instruction is the scoffer depicted in other verses as a fool (see Prov 9:7–12; 13:1). The difference between the blessing of obedience and the ruin for disobedience is told by Jesus in His parable about the two builders. The wise builder constructed his house upon a rock, and it survived when heavy winds, torrential rains, and rising floods came. The foolish man, however, built his house upon the sand. Thus, it collapsed when strong wind, heavy rain, and swirling floods came. Jesus compared the wise builder to whoever hears and obeys His words and the foolish builder to whoever hears His words but fails to obey them, respectively. (Read Mat 7:24–27). In Luke 8:18, Jesus also says, "Take care then how you hear." When Jesus addressed the seven churches of Asia Minor, He exhorted, "He who has an ear, let him hear." And, those who hear He promised to bless them (see Rev 2:11, 17, 26–29; 3:5–6, 12–13, 20–22).Why should we obey the word of the wise? His teaching is a fountain of life. There is a warning that ignoring godly wisdom leads to both earthly and eternal consequences. (see Prov 9:7–12; 11:7; 13:15). A fountain does refresh and sustains life, doesn't it? This has allusions to Jesus claims before the Samaritan woman that whoever drank the water He offered would never thirst. He added that it would be a spring of water welling up to eternal life [John 4:13-14]. Later John wrote, “For he whom God has sent utters the words of God…Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him" (John 3:34, 36).The other benefit of obedience is to avoid the ‘snares' of death. This alludes to ‘traps' having spring shut when unsuspecting animals step in. Think of the many ploys that the enemy has to deceive people to trust for his security. But, let us not forget that Jesus offers eternal and secured salvation. And he assures that those who believe in Him are safe from the eternal death that suddenly comes upon unbelievers (see Prov 29:1; Rev 20:11–15). In other words, our obedience to His words is our security. The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. — Revelation 13:1 In Revelation 4-5, the apostle John describes a vision of heaven. He sees God the Father on the throne, the Holy Spirit in the form of seven torches, and Christ as a Lamb, looking like it was slaughtered. In front of the throne is a peaceful “sea of glass, clear as crystal.” Around the throne, creatures representing all animal life give praise to God. Later John sees the spiritual reality behind events that take place on earth. There a dragon, Satan himself, stands on the shore of a chaotic sea, which brings forth monsters that have “power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them” (Revelation 13:7). These beasts represent a world turned upside down from what God intended. God had created humans to fill the earth and steward it (including its animals) with his authority and care. But instead humans turned away from God and sinned, worshiping idols and degenerating into beastly empires, brutalizing other people and nature. As John received these visions, the Roman Empire had begun persecuting the church. But although the empire had crucified Jesus, the Lamb of God, he had come back to life and had taken his rightful place as King of heaven and earth. Further, the Spirit of God was now living in believers, united with Christ in the waters of baptism. And the dragon knew his time was short . . . (Revelation 12:12). Lord and King, you are alive, and you rule over all things. Come quickly, Lord, to bring your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Jonathan Lethem is a best-selling essayist, novelist, and cultural critic. His books include Dissident Gardens, The Fortress of Solitude, The Feral Detective, and Motherless Brooklyn. Lethem is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. His new book is Brooklyn Crime Novel. Jonathan Lethem explains why They Live endures and is now much more than a “cult classic”, the power of John Carpenter's warnings about our present-future, reflects on what it means to be a “language worker” i.e. someone who writes for a living and thinks deeply about the written word, and why in the Age of Trump and late capitalism so many human beings have surrendered to the culture of cruelty and disposability and have become the “ghouls” from They Live. In this conversation, Jonathan Lethem and Chauncey also reflect on their mutual dislike of Christopher Nolan's films and their shared love of Michael Mann's filmThief. Chauncey shares some stories from his neighborhood, how again he encountered a (new) local pervert, is sad about how bad the New England Patriots have become in the post-Brady era and is very happy about the goddess Jade Cargill joining the WWE. He also explains how Donald Trump continues to channel antisemitism and the evils of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis – this time during an interview where the evil ex-president complains about how non-white migrants and refugees are “poisoning the blood” of (White) America. Published with permission of Treasure Mountain Podcast. Please visit Treasure Mountain Podcast, Treasure Mountain website and Treasure Mountain Facebook page.  Our guest today on Treasure Mountain is John Waite who was born in post WW2 United Kingdom and brought up to be fiercely independent. From a young age he was searching for a better way to live in the world and was influenced by the simultaneously political and spiritual principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Travelling to India in the 1970s he was touched by the kindness of the Indian people despite their modest means. A chance meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala was a turning point on his spiritual journey. Later John would go on a two-week meditation retreat in Queensland and was pleasantly surprised when every thorny question and challenge to the teacher was warmly received and returned with wise, well-considered answers. This led him to commit himself to the path of practice. He was influenced deeply by Lama Zopa's emphasis and example of being of service to others. John put this philosophy into practice enthusiastically as a volunteer fire fighter, ambulance medic, trade union steward and later as the Director of Hayagriva Buddhist Centre in Perth for 17 years helping to bring many great Buddhist teachers to Australia and supporting his local community of practice. John is an old friend of mine and we worked together to found the Buddhist Council of Western Australia around 2005, and we also participated in getting the Federation of Australian Buddhist Councils off the ground around the same time. Not only did I appreciate his calm and steady presence in the work we were doing to bring the various Buddhist groups together for a common cause, but also his insistence that all the Buddhist traditions have the same heart of dharma at their core. I think his attitude was prescient as we enter into this post-sectarian Buddhist renaissance in the twenty-first century. And that's why I wanted to interview him on the podcast. In one sense this interview is John Waite's Spirit Story, about his path into practice, but on the other it's telling a broader story about Buddhism as it moves into the West, specifically into Australia, and where it may be heading in future. I'm so glad you've joined us as we seek for the Dharma within… Links from this episode: Hayagriva Buddhist Centre Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition Thank you for listening to the Treasure Mountain Podcast. After a long hiatus, we're back at the kitchen table and trying desperately to organize all our many, many thoughts. Let's talk about those anonymously-run Facebook groups that exist solely to "call out" a particular person or organization. There's something unhealthy about spending all your time thinking and talking about the so-called sins of a particular individual. That's the sort of obsession that tends to make a person crazy--which could explain how, after a few years, they may end up doxxing a teenaged boy and not realizing how insane that looks to normal people. Later: John has spent many days attracting hate comments on social media (hundreds of them) because he just keeps repeating his belief that children should not be groomed with sexually explicit material at their government school... John's posts are, of course, ridiculous because there has never been any sexually explicit material found in ANY government school--and also, taking away the sexually explicit material that minors NEEEEEEEED to access in school would be Fascism. Finally: The topic of New Ageism and Occult practices just keeps popping up. Did you know where the term "hoodwinked" came from, Pkarlgh? How could a person POSSIBLY be messing with Ouija boards and crystals and shakras and spell-casting and trying to make contact with dead people and STILL think she's a "Christian?" Great question! Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Fourth Week of Advent Lectionary: 199The Saint of the day is Saint John of KantySaint John of Kanty's Story John was a country lad who made good in the big city and the big university of Kraków, Poland.
