In this episode, we finally sit down with Dr. Yoav Tirosh, one of the leading voices in Old Norse–Icelandic studies and an all-around fascinating person to talk to. Yoav has written extensively on topics ranging from Ljósvetninga Saga and saga authorship to storytelling, cultural memory, and disability studies. He's also the creative force behind the webcomic Viking Comics, a seasoned Icelandic tour guide, and a delightful companion for wandering around Kraków. Or was it Prague??? Yoav recently completed a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship at Aarhus University and now works as a researcher at the Center for Disability Studies at the University of Iceland. You can pick up a copy of his latest book, How Genre Governs Creation in the Medieval Icelandic Sagas. It's very affordable. We talk with him about his current work, his interdisciplinary approach to medieval texts, and what motivates him as a scholar. But our main focus, naturally, is Ljósvetninga Saga—a text that Yoav knows better than just about anyone around (one might even get the feeling that he's obsessed with it after listening to this interview). Having written both his MA thesis and PhD dissertation on the saga, Yoav walks us through its manuscript history, important differences between the A and C versions, and the ongoing debates around whether the saga represents a cohesive narrative or a collection of shorter tales. He also scolds us for our many failings in the Along the way, we discuss Guðmundr inn ríki (Guðmund the Powerful) and the saga's broader commentary on leadership, power, and corruption in Icelandic society. Yoav shares his thoughts on generational memory, cultural context, and what the saga reveals about the anxieties of its age. After suffering the stings and barbs of his wrath, we invite Yoav to offer his own judgments and to give us his final rating for Ljósvetninga Saga. There's also something in there about David Lynch and saga structure, John loses power and disappears for a bit, and we learn about a fortuitous encounter between Yoav and his nemesis in an Icelandic bathroom. Join us for a wide-ranging and deeply engaging conversation that feels a lot like the grad school conversations that inspired Saga Thing. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast episode 747! Today's question was sent by Guilhermeand he writes:Hi Vidas,I probably won't be able to properly answer these questions, so I apologise in advance for a possibly long email which might not have much use. It's also a bit to help me organise my thoughts.I'm from Portugal (a village close to Porto). I played the organ in church when I was a teenager and into my early 20s. But, like many things I did back then, I wasn't taking it seriously. A few years earlier I started by learning a bit of the piano, and then switched to the organ. But ultimately the only thing I was doing was playing the melody with the right hand and the chords with the left hand, and I never cared at all about the pedals. So I never really evolved from that basic level, until eventually I left the country. After living in a few countries in Europe, I'm currently living in Kraków, Poland. Perhaps it's the midlife crisis, but I recently became interested in piano and organ again, and eventually bumped into your website and podcast, which I found inspiring.I live in a small apartment and started looking at the possibilities for an organ setup. There are many examples I could find online, including your previous Hauptwerk setup, which I could realistically use (although the pedals always cause a space problem). However, one of my problems is my interest in too many things. Piano, classic organ, Hammond organ, etc.As contradictory as it seems, I chose the piano for the moment and got a digital piano. Now, I do understand that there's a world of difference between piano and organ - and even between classic and Hammond organ.I don't intend to be a virtuoso in any of these instruments, but I still think the piano can help me a bit. In spite of having different technique and a totally different key action, the main thing I want for now is to improve my hand coordination, and I think I can get there with the piano. Also I'll be fine for a while with a single manual.Another thing that made me go for it is the amount of available learning apps for piano, as opposed to organ. And in this case I'm not talking about courses with videos, but rather an app which I can use to follow along some piece of music, plug my keyboard to the computer/tablet (USB/MIDI) and get immediate feedback on what I'm playing (at least if I'm playing the right keys at the right time). At the beginner level I am right now, I think this is really useful, even though it can be complemented with other courses, and even with face-to-face lessons.Ultimately I don't know what my dream is yet. I'd like to get to a decent level (I know this is not very precise), but I don't think I'll ever be aiming to be a serious organist, also because of my current lack of interest in religion. This religious part might actually hold me back from playing in a real organ, although it doesn't have to make it impossible. With the piano I feel that I'm getting motivated and putting in the time and commitment. I intend to spend maybe a year (or more, we'll see) in this and then get back to the organ. Whatever my dream will be then, taking the time to practice might make the most difference - as you say numerous times in your podcast.Best regards,GuilhermeHere you will find all my scores: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/category/arrangeme/?q=Secrets+of+Organ+Playing&aff_id=454957Secrets of Organ Playing Mug: https://www.zazzle.co.uk/z/abykn9us?rf=238366920809443329You can support this channel by becoming a member here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO4K3_6QVJI_HlI5PCFQqtg/joinIf you like what I do, you can buy me some coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/organduoPayPal: https://PayPal.Me/VPinkeviciusWe support Ukraine: https://www.blue-yellow.lt/enMy Hauptwerk setup: https://www.organduo.lt/tools.htmlTotal Organist - the most comprehensive organ training program online: https://www.organduo.lt/total-organist

Informacje o podkaście, odcinkach i autorach: https://teologiazkatowic.pl Rozmawiamy dziś o nowej książce ks. Grzegorza Strzelczyka „Eklezjologia. Jak Kościół rozumie sam siebie” (WAM, Kraków 2025). Stawiamy pytania o jej zamysł, zręby metody i o niektóre treści. Ks.

What happens when Italian folk traditions cross the Atlantic? This video explores how Italian witchcraft, especially the healing practice of Segnature, has been reimagined, reinvented, and often misrepresented in the United States. From Leland's Aradia to Wicca-inspired “Stregheria,” we'll look at how Italian-American communities blended folklore, Catholic devotion, and Pagan spirituality to create new forms of practice. But are these the same as the vernacular traditions in Italy, or something entirely different? This video is a recording of the paper I presented at the World Congress of the International Association for the History of Religions, held at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.Join me as we unpack the myths, the reinventions, and the cultural translations behind Italian witchcraft in America.CONNECT & SUPPORT

“I welcome every noise around me. No matter what it is: a duck, a fish, a deer farting. [...] You invite it all. And [...] this is [...] when you realize [that] every inch of this planet is occupied and we are sharing and coexisting with other species - [so] how can you ever be alone?” In this edition of Earth.fm podcast Wind Is the Original Radio, curator Melissa Pons speaks to Serge Bulat, a multidisciplinary artist whose work - which spans and hybridizes music, exhibitions, immersive games, radio, field recording, and psychological installations - explores the edges of performance, sound, perception, and identity. Serge is from a Moldovan town divided from Ukraine by a river, with family hailing from both worlds. For this reason, borders are “a prominent subject in [his] work”, which seeks to question topics around unity, differences and similarities, and the utopian aspiration of finding “ways to live in a borderless world”. Earlier this year, he released Phonomundi: Selected Recordings of Heritage Sites and Traditions 2017-2024, an album which draws upon years of recording, sharing, and contributing to projects, causes, and stories close to his heart. Phonomundi is also about engaging with “our absolutely disastrous path away from respecting our ears and respecting our culture and respecting our environment”. Against a backdrop of woozy compositions by Serge, featuring nature soundscape recordings, he and Melissa discuss the trials of having a “noisy” mind, which feels like “war in your head” and means that “it's hard to stop the thinking process” - but which can also lead recordists to “forget about [them]self and [...] start thinking about communities, people that are affected, and [how] that [can be] such an ego drop”. Serge also talks about how ‘now' is illusory, and his “weird relationship with time”: “I guess it might be some form of synesthesia, because I feel time; I feel its thickness and I feel its qualities.” The flow of time is “one of the driving forces behind [him] doing what [he's] doing”, while field recording can provide “the nowest now that there can ever be”. He describes how, after experiencing difficulties with conventional mediation, he managed to develop his own system of meditation around listening, where “time stops [...] [and] you find that serenity and that absolute calmness and, for me, this is when I stop the noise”. As he says, “We're all pieces of [...] a bigger body and we're [...] made of the same substance. [...] I always struggle to put anything like that in words [...]. It's easier for me to put it in music. [...] This is what music and sound does [...] and words don't.” Together, Serge and Melissa also address topics including: The relevance of creative work in the face of the climate catastrophe and alarming political developments across the world - including how music, as a precursor to language, can be “a shortcut [...] to somebody's mind, heart and soul”. While also acknowledging the necessity of “dig[ging] deeper [to] understand the issues [with which] we're living” Wanting to make work of significance despite “sonic pollution, [...] over-tourism, over-consumerism, weird politics that make zero sense when it comes to preserving [...] or nurturing stuff that matters and makes us us” - and especially in light of the fact that everything we know is at risk of “disappearing just by [the] pressing [of] one button” Learning to love silence. As Serge says, “We need to reset our hearing. [...] I feel like [silence] makes the ear function better” How it is possible to “feel and hear” bees' moods from the frequencies of their buzzing, and how bee therapy (‘apitherapy') - known since the time of Ancient Egypt - can improve anxiety, depression, and even respiratory conditions. “What bl[ows] my mind [about them]”, says Serge, is their “self-sufficiency, community, [and the way that they can] solv[e] a crisis [by] relying on each other” Serge's experience of an immersive exhibition in Kraków, Into the Darkness, which replicates what it's like to not be able to see, with blind guides providing insights about their lives, and the equivalence of this to animals replying on different senses than our own (such as spiders and vibrations, or snakes using infrared thermal radiation) The appeal of twilight, “when everything starts becoming blurry” and takes on the quality of a dream, and “the thrill of [darkness] and [the way that] [Serge's] imagination sometimes takes [him to other] places”. Listen to the whole interview for all this and much more (including the raw terror of Bob from Twin Peaks!). Read more on the recent discoveries from the James Webb Telescope. Are we tourists or pilgrims? Survivors by inheritance or outsiders looking in? How do we process the tension between grief, history, and belonging? What responsibilities—if any—come with being second- or third-generation descendants of Holocaust survivors? Some of the most moving moments of this video were actually recorded off-camera with a hot mic—raw, vulnerable, and unfiltered. We decided to share them because they speak to the kind of honest, searching conversations I believe matter most.

In this episode, I check in from Gdańsk, a city in northern Poland on the Baltic coast. I talk about what it's been like exploring this part of the world—how Gdańsk surprised me with its charm, walkability, and its history. World War II started here. And unlike Kraków or Warsaw, it has beaches! And fewer tourists.I also talk about something I've been thinking about a lot lately: optimal experience and how we use our time. From Estonia's efficiency to my own efforts to build better focus in Poland, I get into why flow state matters—especially in a world full of distractions. This one's part travel journal, part reminder to slow down and use time like it counts. Because it does. There's investing talk too. And a bit on strip clubs and some Epstein theories.

Probably Poland's most iconic sound, the hejnał mariacki (literally "Saint Mary's dawn") is a trumpet call that sounds every hour on the hour from the highest tower of St Mary's Church in Kraków's rynek glówny (main square). The bugler plays the same call four times, once in each of the cardinal directions. This tradition dates back to medieval times, when the call was used to signal the opening and closing of the city gates at dawn and dusk. It was also played to alarm citizens of fires or enemy invasion. The theme's abrupt end commemorates the Mongol-Tatar siege of 1241, when the trumpeter warning the city of the imminent threat was shot in the throat by an arrow mid-way through the call. Or so the legend goes... I made this recording a couple of months after moving to Kraków as part of a project through which I attempted to reconnect with my Polish-Jewish heritage and, in a more general sense, to explore the experience of migration through sound. What happens when you pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in St. Faustina's backyard? This week, Father Dave shares powerful moments from his recent pilgrimage to Poland—visiting sacred sites tied to St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Faustina, and St. John Paul II. From celebrating Mass at Kolbe's friary to walking through Auschwitz and Birkenau, it's a glimpse of God's mercy amid some of history's darkest places. While Father Dave walked in the footsteps of saints, Deacon Bob found hopeful witness in the desert. He returns from the Life Teen Catholic Youth Ministry Convention in Arizona, where he gave a talk on “Radiant Hope” and reconnected with longtime friends in ministry. Together, the hosts reflect on the quiet, often unseen ways God raises up saints in every generation—even in the most unexpected places. And yes, this episode still includes classic They That Hope moments: breakfast with Father Dave's brother Tom, a temporarily misplaced child on the New York subway, and a burning question: Why does the French Open have two names? Highlighted Sections (00:00) Breakfast with Tom, Arizona Adventures, and Youth Ministry in the Desert Deacon Bob recounts his recent trip to Arizona for the Life Teen Catholic Youth Ministry Convention where he reconnected with ministry leaders and gave a keynote on “Radiant Hope.” He also shares a surprise breakfast meet-up with Father Dave's brother, Tom (a loyal listener), some humorous travel woes, and the joy of being surrounded by those serving the Church's youth. (04:08) Sports Recap: NBA, NHL, Tennis, and... Golf? From unexpected NBA playoff upsets to a grueling five-set French Open final, Father Dave and Deacon Bob weigh in on recent sports headlines. They touch on the drama of playoff hockey, marvel at JJ Spaun's 62-foot putt, and clear up (sort of) why the French Open is also called Roland-Garros. (09:01) Audiobook Adventures Deacon Bob announces that his book Sharing the Gospel with Our Lives is getting the audiobook treatment—and he's narrating it himself. He shares the process (including a mysterious home studio in Columbus), while Father Dave recalls the heartbreak of being cut off with just 15 minutes left in a Navy SEAL memoir due to subscription limits. (16:29) Pilgrimage to Poland: Kolbe, Faustina & Divine Mercy in Dark Places Father Dave reflects on the deeply moving pilgrimage he led across Poland. Highlights include Mass at St. Maximilian Kolbe's friary visiting the birthplace of St. Faustina, and praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet in St. Faustina's backyard with her niece. He shares how the lives of these saints—and the sobering visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau—revealed the light of God even in history's darkest moments. (23:02) Saints Amidst Suffering As conflict rages in places like Gaza and Ukraine, the hosts reflect on how God raises up saints in every era. From the Missionaries of Charity caring for the vulnerable in war zones, to everyday youth ministers and celibate religious, they honor those whose quiet, faithful witness brings hope to the world. (28:22) Radiant Hope in Service Expanding on his convention talk, Deacon Bob shares how true Christian hope is made visible through acts of loving service. Drawing from Scripture and the Visitation of Mary, he explains how hope, though unseen, shines clearly in those who serve joyfully and sacrificially. Full Text of ReadingsSaturday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 364The Saint of the day is Saint Albert ChmielowskiSaint Albert Chmielowski's Story Born in Igolomia near Kraków as the eldest of four children in a wealthy family, he was christened Adam. During the 1864 revolt against Czar Alexander III, Adam's wounds forced the amputation of his left leg. His great talent for painting led to studies in Warsaw, Munich, and Paris. Adam returned to Kraków and became a Secular Franciscan. In 1888, when he founded the Brothers of the Third Order of Saint Francis, Servants to the Poor, he took the name Albert. They worked primarily with the homeless, depending completely on alms while serving the needy regardless of age, religion, or politics. A community of Albertine sisters was established later. Pope John Paul II beatified Albert in 1983, and canonized him six years later. His liturgical feast is celebrated on June 17. Reflection Reflecting on his own priestly vocation, Pope John Paul II wrote in 1996 that Brother Albert had played a role in its formation “because I found in him a real spiritual support and example in leaving behind the world of art, literature, and the theater, and in making the radical choice of a vocation to the priesthood” (Gift and Mystery: On the Fiftieth Anniversary of My Priestly Ordination). As a young priest, Karol Wojtyla repaid his debt of gratitude by writing The Brother of Our God, a play about Brother Albert's life. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Mecenas Giertych wstępuje do Platformy i alarmuje o dziwnych przypadkach w komisjach wyborczych w całej Polsce.
He looked like an ordinary student, he was quiet, well mannered, and barely out of his teens. But between 1964 and 1966, Karol Kot turned the streets of Kraków into his hunting ground, attacking elderly women and children with chilling precision. His reason? He said causing pain made him feel alive. By the time he was caught, the city knew him only by the name whispered in fear "The Vampire of Kraków." Full Text of ReadingsThird Sunday of Easter Lectionary: 48The Saint of the day is Blessed Michael GiedroycBlessed Michael Giedroyc's Story A life of physical pain and mental torment didn't prevent Michael Giedroyc from achieving holiness. Born near Vilnius, Lithuania, Michael suffered from physical and permanent handicaps from birth. He was a dwarf who had the use of only one foot. Because of his delicate physical condition, his formal education was frequently interrupted. But over time, Michael showed special skills at metalwork. Working with bronze and silver, he created sacred vessels, including chalices. He traveled to Kraków, Poland, where he joined the Augustinians. He received permission to live the life of a hermit in a cell adjoining the monastery. There Michael spent his days in prayer, fasted and abstained from all meat and lived to an old age. Though he knew the meaning of suffering throughout his years, his rich spiritual life brought him consolation. Michael's long life ended in 1485 in Kraków. Five hundred years later, Pope John Paul II visited the city and spoke to the faculty of the Pontifical Academy of Theology. The 15th century in Kraków, the pope said, was “the century of saints.” Among those he cited was Blessed Michael Giedroyc. Reflection Many people today face a life of suffering and discrimination due to physical handicaps. Let's ask Blessed Michael Giedroyc to pray for them that their situation might be addressed by society at large. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Fifth Week of Lent Lectionary: 255The Saint of the day is Saint StanislausSaint Stanislaus' Story Anyone who reads the history of Eastern Europe cannot help but chance on the name of Stanislaus, the saintly but tragic bishop of Kraków, patron of Poland. He is remembered with Saints Thomas More and Thomas Becket for vigorous opposition to the evils of an unjust government. Born in Szczepanow near Kraków on July 26, 1030, he was ordained a priest after being educated in the cathedral schools of Gniezno, then capital of Poland, and at Paris. He was appointed preacher and archdeacon to the bishop of Kraków, where his eloquence and example brought about real conversion in many of his penitents, both clergy and laity. He became bishop of Kraków in 1072. During an expedition against the Grand Duchy of Kiev, Stanislaus became involved in the political situation of Poland. Known for his outspokenness, he aimed his attacks at the evils of the peasantry and the king, especially the unjust wars and immoral acts of King Boleslaus II. The king first excused himself, then made a show of penance, then relapsed into his old ways. Stanislaus continued his open opposition in spite of charges of treason and threats of death, finally excommunicating the king. Enraged, the latter ordered soldiers to kill the bishop. When they refused, the king killed Stanislaus with his own hands. Forced to flee to Hungary, Boleslaus supposedly spent the rest of his life as a penitent in the Benedictine abbey in Osiak. Reflection Saints John the Baptist, Thomas Becket, Thomas More, and Stanislaus are a few of the prophets who dared to denounce corruption in high places. They followed in the footsteps of Jesus himself, who pointed out the moral corruption in the religious leadership of his day. It is a risky business. In this captivating memoir, journalist Karen A. Frenkel unravels her parents' and sole surviving grandparent's secret, riveting stories of survival during World War II. How do you shatter the silence that muffles family stories when those who knew what happened are gone? In Family Treasures: Lost & Found (Post Hill Press, 2025), journalist and daughter of Holocaust survivors, Karen A. Frenkel, investigates her parents' unspoken WWII stories. Readers accompany Frenkel on her quest and discovery of how her resourceful parents survived on the run from the Nazis. Her research leads to shocking revelations of one parent's trans-Atlantic escape to Mexico and New York, and how the other eluded capture throughout Eastern and Central Europe with false papers. Having scoured online and real-world archives and visited the relevant cities, Frenkel honors her parents, her sole surviving grandparent, and her lost relatives, who cease to be mere names and who she came to respect and love. The tale Frenkel weaves is both personal and universal, as we begin to feel that her family could be ours. Frenkel also shares her refugee great-grandparents' rare and huge collection of stunning oil and pastel portraits, photos, and documents, which were discovered in 1968 in garbage bags. Most Holocaust families lost everything, but these cherished artifacts reveal the Jewish assimilated culture in Kraków and Berlin that the Nazis obliterated. Readers also join Frenkel on her visit to Vienna, Kraków, Tarnów, and Lviv, Ukraine, where the action took place. Such astonishing tales of survival, resistance, luck, and loss have the power to captivate readers of all generations and backgrounds and inspire them to explore their own family histories. Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the First Week in Lent Lectionary: 226The Saint of the day is Blessed Angela SalawaBlessed Angela Salawa's Story Angela served Christ and Christ's little ones with all her strength. Born in Siepraw, near Kraków, Poland, she was the 11th child of Bartlomiej and Ewa Salawa. In 1897, she moved to Kraków where her older sister Therese lived. Angela immediately began to gather together and instruct young women domestic workers. During World War I, she helped prisoners of war without regard for their nationality or religion. The writings of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were a great comfort to her. Angela gave great service in caring for soldiers wounded in World War I. After 1918, her health did not permit her to exercise her customary apostolate. Addressing herself to Christ, she wrote in her diary, “I want you to be adored as much as you were destroyed.” In another place, she wrote, “Lord, I live by your will. I shall die when you desire; save me because you can.” At her 1991 beatification in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: “It is in this city that she worked, that she suffered and that her holiness came to maturity. While connected to the spirituality of Saint Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spirit” (L'Osservatore Romano, volume 34, number 4, 1991). Reflection Humility should never be mistaken for lack of conviction, insight or energy. Angela brought the Good News and material assistance to some of Christ's “least ones.” Her self-sacrifice inspired others to do the same. Blessed Angela Salawa is a Patron Saint of: Domestic workers Click here for more on Blessed Angela! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
