On Sunday, August 30th, 2020, an assortment of luminaries from across the cultural spectrum joined forces to launch the movement to form a new major political party in the United States. The People's Convention 2020 Podcast brings this full event to you in eight episodes. The speakers at this event focused on discussing the issues, not abstract ideals, and made it clear that while we may not agree on everything, we have more in common than we have been led to believe by the existing major parties. The common thread amongst the speakers was a disavowal of both neofascism and neoliberalism, and an advocacy of people over corporations. This is the Movement for a People's Party. Part 3 - 33:07 - Chris Hedges on the high stakes of oligarchic concentration of power under both major parties - Peoples' Testimonials on the need for a major new party to deal with the crises we face - Lauren Ashcraft on why we need to stop taking abuse from our good cop/bad cop duopoly - Isiah James on the civil rights movement that continues to this day - Eleanor Goldfield on how historic and unstoppable our movement is

Lauren Ashcraft is running for the US House to represent New York's 12th congressional district. The district encompasses the wealthiest zip code in the United States – the Upper East Side – as well as parts of lower Manhattan and western Queens. She is primarying Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who is serving her 14th term in Congress and is the current chair of the House Oversight Committee. A comedian and former project manager for JP Morgan Chase, Ashcraft identifies as a democratic socialist, advocating for a Green New Deal, Medicare-for-All, canceling student debt and universal child care. She has been endorsed by Brand New Congress, former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, and the New York chapter of US Youth Climate Strike. We interviewed Lauren several months ago in Long Island City, Queens where we discussed the staggering levels of wealth inequality within the district and her top legislative priorities if she were to win her race. openDemocracy is a small non-profit journalism outfit, not funded by dark money or lucrative sponsorship, so we depend on regular donations from our listeners. Episode 168 Hypocrisy is pretty much a given when you are in politics. I've pointed out the particular hypocrisy of all those flag-waving politicians who shout a full-throated “I support our men and women in uniform” but, then, cut benefits for vets and cut funds for the VA. Today, I hone in on another hypocrisy: politicians who wax eloquently about the importance of families but refuse to advance paid family leave, a benefit enjoyed by tens of millions of people in other advanced economies. Just days after the 27th anniversary of the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act, which introduced unpaid family leave, I explore the lack of movement to expand the crucial benefit of paid family leave with Jared Gaby-Biegel of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Then, I chat with Lauren Ashcraft, a progressive running for the 12th congressional district in NY and challenging a long-time Democratic incumbent.Episode 168: Pay Up For Family Leave; Ashcraft Aims For NYC Incumbent Take-Down
