Nina Turner talks about her latest congressional race, which she lost, where the Congressional Progressives Caucus was, & what's next for her. Amy Vilela talks about her own congressional race for Nevada's First District. https://twitter.com/amy4thepeople https://twitter.com/ninaturner Amy Vilela grew up in poverty, relying on programs like WIC & SNAP in order to make ends meet as a single-mother. She took classes at night while working multiple jobs to become the first in her family to earn a degree. She became a national advocate for Medicare for All after her daughter Shalynne died at the hands of our nation's profit-driven healthcare system. After working her way up to become a CFO, Amy has since retooled her professional experience to provide vital campaign services to other progressive candidates. In 2020, serving as a State Co-chair, Amy led the charge for Bernie Sanders' landslide victory in the Nevada caucuses. The Vilelas first moved to Nevada when her husband, Major David Vilela, was transferred to Creech Air Force Base. If elected, she would be the first ever active duty military spouse to serve in Congress. In addition to Congresswoman Cori Bush & Senator Nina Turner, Amy's campaign has attracted national attention and has been endorsed by Brand New Congress, Sunrise Movement Las Vegas, the Center for Biological Diversity & more. Nina Turner, the oldest of seven children, grew up in a working-class family in Cleveland's Lee-Harvard community. Her Mother was a nurse's aide & her Father was a truck driver. Experiencing the impact of income inequality firsthand, Turner took her first job at age 14 to help support her siblings & keep the family afloat. Turner's Mother battled high blood pressure her entire life & died at age 42. This experience exposed to Turner the serious problems with our health care system, especially for Black & lower-income families. After working her way through college and graduate school (she earned an Associate's Degree from Cuyahoga Community College & a Bachelor's and Master's from Cleveland State University), she started a career dedicated to keeping Ohio working families afloat too. Turner made history in 2005 as the first African American woman to represent Ward One on the Cleveland City Council, & again in 2008 as the first African American woman to serve as a State Senator in Ohio's 25th District. In the legislature, Turner repeatedly defended against attacks on women's health care freedom & partnered with working families & organized labor to protect collective bargaining rights. As a champion for criminal justice reform, she led the effort to create Ohio's first task force on police & community relations in the wake of tragic police killings in Ohio & across the country. Turner went on to serve as the Chair of Party Engagement for the Ohio Democratic Party, leading the effort to build a more robust & inclusive organizing infrastructure & support for local Democratic candidates across the State. Turner took her record of accomplishment & commitment to justice nationwide when she became a national surrogate for Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign & National Co-Chair for Bernie 2020. In those roles, she traveled coast to coast building support for progressive values such as a $15 living wage, free education from kindergarten through college & health care as a human right in the form of Medicare for All. Between those two campaigns, Turner also served as the President of the national grassroots political organization “Our Revolution.” Nina Turner is a wife, mother & proud grandmother. A former Assistant Professor of History at her alma mater Cuyahoga Community College, she is also the current host of the “Hello Somebody” podcast on iHeartRadio. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** On Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Follow Katie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/kthalps Callin link: https://www.callin.com/episode/nina-turner-amy-vilela-qsJgTwzHDK

Very happy to welcome Sanna Ghotbi to talk about Participatory Democracy !After working in politics for four years, Sanna is now working with municipalities and public institutions to design participatory democracy processes. Together we discussed the need to reinvent democracy. We reviewed inspiring examples in various countries: in Spain following 15-M movement in 2011 (Indignados), in France with the tops & flops of the Citizen Convention for Climate, in Ireland on very controversial topics and even in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan). We then made a focus on Sweden, known as a Democracy landmark. Partly a myth according to Sanna, who hightlighted opportunities, challenges and specific initiatives going on at the moment. At the end of the interview, Sanna shared her dream for Participatory Democracy in the future. She would want it to be built on 3 pillars: 1/ Better Representation: Allowing more people from different backgrounds to enter into politics, inspired by the movement "Brand New Congress" in the US, led by AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez), 2/ Better everyday participation: thanks to permanent structures, such as for example rotational Citizen Assemblies, 3/ Better Organising on a grassroots level: through Community Organising within Civil Society, "and for that for people in Sweden to wake up ! We are not in this perfect equal country, we need to get organised ! to demand things, to cross pollinate between different movements (equal health care, less discrimination on the job market, better pensions, less segregation and dismanteled public services in disadvantaged areas)".Hope you you will like this conversation as much as I did ! Auf Facebook schrieb sie 2017: "Women like me aren't supposed to run for office. [...] The dress I'm wearing is from a thrift shop. The ring on my hand is my mother's - a reminder of every floor she's mopped so that her daughter could have a chance." And in One Last Thing, Dan has been watching gritty adaptations of lighthearted comics and Tim just wants to hold at bay the anxieties of our current moment. Some of the things we talked about in this episode: Pastor Ryerse was inspired to run for Congress by this episode of the Robcast from evangelical author Rob Bell. He also mentioned Brian McClaren's idea about a constitutional reading of Scripture and the Netflix documentary Knock Down the House. This week’s guest is a bit of a departure for us. We don’t usually interview political candidates but Lauren Ashcraft is a stand-up comedian, a Democratic Socialist, and an ardent proponent of MMT, so how could we resist? She was introduced to us by our friend Andrés Bernal, who must have recognized how well all these attributes would serve her in the US Congress. When someone’s convictions are born of their lived experiences, the roots run deep. Corporate greed literally killed her grandfather who was a victim of a notorious coal mining accident. Her grandmother could not have survived without Social Security. Ironically Lauren became radicalized from working in the belly of the capitalist beast. She worked for one of the huge financial institutions where she received daily messages about profits being down. Staff was constantly being laid off or forced to relocate, at a time when these companies were receiving billions of dollars in incentives. And somehow the compensation to those at the very top continued to grow. She was witnessing the “socialism at the top, rugged capitalism for the rest of us” that Bernie Sanders talks about. Lauren is running as a Democrat in New York’s 12th Congressional district, challenging incumbent Carolyn Maloney. The district includes some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country (we’ve all heard of NY’s Upper East Side, right?), but also extends to the Queensbridge Houses, the nation’s largest public housing development. Steve and Lauren debate whether it will be possible to change the Democratic Party from within, and agree that it’s really not about Democratic vs Republican. They talk about strategies to continue expanding the movement, breaking away from partisanship, and how the COVID-19 pandemic is shining a light on - and exacerbating - the need for the very policies in Lauren’s platform. There’s much more to her story, including her journey to becoming a stand-up comedian. Let’s just say it began with a Groupon coupon -- you’ll have to listen to the episode to hear the rest. Lauren Ashcraft is a candidate for New York’s 12th Congressional District. She has been endorsed by Brand New Congress, Marianne Williamson, and Shahid Buttar, among others. https://laurenashcraft.com/ @voteAshcraft on Twitter

#64 — Paula Jean Swearengin (U.S. Senate)

Hello! And welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom. Today’s guest is… the formidable Paula Jean Swearengin, star of the Netflix documentary Knock Down The House and current candidate for U.S. Senate from the great state of West Virginia. Paula Jean is the daughter of a long line of coal miners and has lived in the Mountain State all her life. And she’s also recently become a grandmother! She’s thus seen the destruction the coal industry has done to her people for generations, as well as how the opioid crisis ravaged her friends first hand. So, let’s tuck into an important episode, but first, some interesting articles. Enjoy 🤓What’s New?Dallas Morning News — The DMN broke with tradition this week by announcing that it won’t be endorsing anyone for president. F**k yeah!Jeff Bezos — The Amazon CEO pledged $10bn to climate change initiatives, though it was met with criticism that it wasn’t enough. Here’s a list of the largest climate change pledges so far — Bezos will be the thirdTaylor Swift — How the Queen of Music became the Queen of the Breakup SongCovering Bloomberg — How does a news organization cover a presidential candidate when said candidate is their boss?Paula Jean 👇Who Is Paula Jean Swearengin?Paula Jean was born in Mullens, West Virginia, a town of about 1,350 people whose population has decreased by a third since 1990. Declining populations are all too common across the state, and will result in the state losing one electoral vote in the presidential election. Paula Jean burst onto the political scene in 2018 when she grabbed 30 percent of the vote from incumbent U.S. senator and moderate Democrat Joe Manchin in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. This came two years after Bernie Sanders won 51 percent of the vote in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary to Hillary Clinton’s 36 percent, so clearly there’s a yearning for the progressive brand of politics Paula Jean represents. This time around Paula Jean faces another tough Democratic primary on May 12 against Richard Ojeda, a former state senator and apparently a brief candidate for president 🤷‍♂ and Richie Robb, former mayor of South Charleston and not a former presidential candidate. The winner of the primary will face incumbent Republican Shelley Moore Capito in November. Who is Shelley Moore Capito?Incumbent Republican Shelley Moore Capito has been junior U.S. Senator from West Virginia since 2015, when she defeated then Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant. She secured 62 percent of the vote, the largest victory margin for a Republican running in a statewide race in state history (more on the weirdness of West Virginia’s voting history later). Back then, Capito was seen as too liberal for the Tea Party, but overcame stiff opposition from anti-establishment conservatives. Since then, Capito has very much fulfilled the expectation of being a rank and file Republican, voting with Donald Trump 95.7 percent of the time. Though, to be fair, which is incredibly hard to do when talking about the GOP, Capito did come to the defense of FBI Director Christopher Wray back in December when Trump went on one of his delightful Twitter tirades. But that’s where the fairness ends. Capito has received $3.5 million in donations from the likes of Delta Air Lines, private prison operator GEO Group and billion-dollar hedge fund Elliot Management, according to Open Secrets. Because of the issues effecting West Virginia and its voting past, if Paula Jean can win the Democratic primary, she could give Capito a legitimate challenge, if not cause a shock upset.Like Me, PleaseBefore you read on, please like this edition of Inside The Newsroom by clicking the ❤️ below the title. That way I’ll appear in clever algorithms and more people will be able to read. Cheers.West Virginia’s Weird Voting RecordOkay, to the weirdness! At the presidential level, West Virginia is unequivocally a red state — the GOP has won West Virginia every election since 2000 when George W. Bush won 51.9 percent of the vote, a victory margin of 6.3 percent over Al Gore. The Republican vote share has steadily increased since then, and in 2016 Trump claimed 68.6 percent of votes, 42.1 points better than Clinton. But move on down the ticket to U.S. senators, and it’s a completely different picture.Remarkably, Capito is the only Republican U.S. Senator to serve the state since 1958. No for real, she is. Ever since Robert Byrd and Jennings Randolph were both elected, five Democrats have been elected compared to a single Republican. Even further down the ticket and Jim Justice is the first conservative governor since 2001, but only because he switched from the Democrats in 2017. Then there’s the West Virginia Senate, which Democrats have historically controlled, but is where Republicans currently hold 20 of the 34 seats, many of which were won as part of the Trump-fuelled red wave from 2016. Looking ahead to November and it’s bloody hard to know which way the state will go. Capito is a solid bet, according to The Cook Political Report, but with a growing progressive wave on the left, and a scandal-ridden president on the right, West Virginia isn’t a foregone conclusion. Coal Country: West Virginia’s Coal and Addiction ProblemThe coal mining industry employed more than 150,000 people in West Virginia during its peak in the mid 20th century — almost 10 percent of the state — and, through its unions, were closely aligned with Democrats, many of whom came from similar working class backgrounds. These days between 10,000 and 20,000 miners remain, as the threat of climate change and automation have massacred the industry. But coal is still mined — West Virginians remarkably produced more coal in 2010 than in the early 1950s, leaving behind a trail of deadly problems. The daughter of a coal miner herself, Paula Jean knows all too well the consequences of being a miner, as well as the massive employment hole the lack of reinvestment in the state has caused. Her younger sister was born with a cyst on the base of her brain, and her grandfather died in 2001 from black lung after decades of working in an underground mine. West Virginia now has an unemployment rate of 5 percent, the fourth highest in the U.S., which goes against everything most blue collar West Virginians have known. The state is ready to work. What they need is a new generation of investment in green and renewable energy jobs that spark the state’s GDP, which is again one of the worst in the nation. More importantly, though, green energy will significantly decrease the astronomical cancer mortality rate in the state — 180 in every 100,000 West Virginians die from cancer every year, third most in the U.S. That leads us to the state’s addiction problem, where the opioid crisis has hit the hardest. Once again, large corporations are literally killing West Virginians, like this town of 3,000 where millions of opioid pills were prescribed. Of all 50 states, West Virginia has been ravaged more than any other state. Paula Jean is for Medicare For All, which is expensive, but should it really be refused at the expense of thousands of lives?Credit: CDCI’ll leave you with this short doc giving a devastating outlook of the fight between coal and green energy in the state…Brand New Congress and Justice DemocratsBrand New Congress and Justice Democrats are political action committees founded by former volunteer staffers of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. Their shared aim is to get progressive Democrats elected to Congress, and are the organizations behind the rise of the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. Faced with discrimination at home, he came to America with $200 and the hope that he could make a better life for himself. It was here that he met a fellow Egyptian immigrant, my mother. They borrowed against their house to send me to the best schools. But the unspeakable weight of their experience with tyranny pressed down on every moment of my childhood. Bonus chat: https://www.patreon.com/posts/19476905 I talk to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about why she's running for Congress, how her personal story as a child of Puerto Rican parents influenced her politics, what she's running for and why her opponent, who writes op-eds about his Irish America pride, accuses her of making the election "about race." Plus she talks about the amazing candidates being supported and recruited by Justice Democrats, Brand New Congress, and Democratic Socialists of America. Gabe & and I talk about Anthony Bourdain, his hatred of Henry Kissinger, and his commitment to social justice and human rights not just for "Americans" but for... wait for it... Palestinians. And Gabe and I talk about another tragic suicide: Marco Antonio Muñoz who died in a Texas jail after being separated from his wife and three-year-old son. The family had fled Honduras after the wife's brother had been killed. The apparent suicide (though it's not clear he wasn't killed) sheds light on the new zero tolerance policy around immigration. How much of a departure is Trump from other presidents on immigration, though? Alexandria and I discuss this in the bonus episode.

Supporters of Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential Campaign voice outrage at confirmation that top DNC officials rigged the primary process for Hillary Rodhman Clinton. Interim DNC Chair Donna Brazile's Article—“Inside Hillary Clinton's Secret Takeover of the DNC” —published in Politico yesterday detailed the wide range of unethical activities Including the DNC ceding nearly all decision-making to the Clinton Campaign. On this episode of "Fault Lines," hosts Garland Nixon and Lee Stranahan discuss the latest revelations about improper collusion between the Clinton Campaign and the DNC, the lack of leadership by former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and that the Democratic Party was, according to Brazile, “fully under the control of Hillary's campaign, which seemed to confirm the suspicions of the Bernie camp.” Garland and Lee will also discuss off-year elections including the governor's race in New Jersey, and efforts by grassroots organizers to elect a “Brand New Congress” in the midterms next year. The hosts and guests will analyze top news stories and issues including the Republican tax and budget plan, the newly signed legislation to protect banks and credit card companies from consumers, and Puerto Rican relief efforts. Recorded September 16, 2016. Special "Transparency" Episode!  Bernie Sanders speaks out, at their conception, against abominations against our environment and tribal rights like the Dakota Access Pipeline. So why does it take public embarrassment or outrage to get leaders like President Obama and Hillary Clinton to take action? Could it be that they don't want to offend their friends and donors in high places? President Obama promised the most transparent administration in history, which is probably why it takes e-mail leaks to prove that the usual pay-to-play and influence-peddling has completely painted over that "transparency." If you've got millions to stuff into the president's campaign coffers, you can be head of the FDA or get a cushy ambassadorship. And Colin Powell's leaked e-mails add to the list of ways Hillary Clinton has shown her incompetency. In our Chicago Progress segment, we interview public defender, educator and grassroots organizer Tom Tresser about his revealing and disturbing book Chicago Is Not Broke: Funding the City We Deserve, which lifts the curtain on how the wealthy ruling class sequesters and squanders OUR tax dollars to enrich the pockets of developers, contractors and corporate interests. Hear how "TIF" districts are used in Chicago and nationwide to divert money from education and public resources in favor of development in high-income and tourist areas. Another reason we need to get involved and take our government back. Time and time again, those at the top ignore our voices until it's too late and favor their $1,000 a bottle wine club associates (e.g. Rahm Emmanuel). Get together with Chicago Progress, Our Revolution and Brand New Congress to implement real change now and keep things BERNING for enemies of progressive values! On today's special episode of Loud & Clear, Brian spends the full hour discussing the crisis inside the Republican Party, and the implications for the two-party system as a whole.Nearly one in five Republican voters say they want Donald Trump to drop out of the presidential race according to a new poll. The Republican Party is in chaos as the party ranks continue to be split on Trump’s surprise nomination. But the Democrats aren’t faring much better, as supporters of Bernie Sanders reject Hillary Clinton or turn to third parties. What’s led to the crises in the two major political parties? Is this the end of the two-party system as we know it? And will third parties soon challenge the Democrats and Republicans in a serious way?To address these issues, Brian is joined for the full hour by Dr. Jack Rasmus, professor of political economy at St. Mary’s College and the author of “Systemic fragility in the global economy” and the new book “Looting Greece: An Emerging New Financial Imperialism;” Anoa Changa, part-time volunteer staff with Brand New Congress, contributor to the Benjamin Dixon Show, and host of the weekly progressive talk show The Way with Anoa; and Walter Smolarek, producer for Loud & Clear on Radio Sputnik.
