Gathering Steam: Student Strike for Palestine

As the Israeli war machine launches its ground invasion of Lebanon, the struggle against imperialism intensifies. The Student Strike for Palestine Campaign has reached its first month of activity, and with it hundreds of students have been drawn into active resistance to the brutality unfolding in the Middle East and the complicity of our imperialists here at home. But activity alone isn't enough - we need to be able to learn the lessons of these first few weeks and continue to build the movement to shut down Canadian imperialism's ties to Netanyahu and the Israeli regime. For that reason we have collected submissions from students across the country to share those lessons which can help us build our movement and cut imperialism at its root. We are not out-numbered, we are out organized. Only the students and the working class have the power to end the genocide.

As Israel's assault on Gaza drags towards a year, the disgust and anger felt by millions of Canadians has only grown. Already the movement to end the genocide has seen protests of tens of thousands and encampments on every major campus in the country. But still the genocide continues, as does the unwavering support of the Canadian ruling class for the atrocities inflicted on the Palestinian people. What we need is a militant mass movement, what we need is an escalation. That is why this fall the RCP is mobilizing for a student strike on every Canadian campus to stop the genocide. If every organization, every student and worker who stands with the Palestinians rallies behind a student strike for Palestine, we could build a movement that could not be suppressed or ignored. We could paralyze our imperialists at home and take matters into our own hands.  Help build the student strike for Palestine!  marxist.ca/article/open-letter-to-all-pro-palestine-groups-unite-for-a-student-strike marxist.ca/article/towards-a-student-strike-for-palestine

On this edition of Free City Radio we hear the second part of a panel discussion hosted at Concordia University in early 2023 that focuses on the the role of artists during the 2012 student strike in 2012. This program focuses on the ways that arts students and more broadly cultural workers were an essential part of the major strike movement against attempts by the Quebec government to boost university tuition for students in Quebec. The movement in 2012 which began as a student focused series of protests quickly expanded into a broader social movement against economic, colonial and environmental injustice that is integral to many elements of Quebec's modern economy. On this program we hear again from Zéa Beaulieu-April who co-founded the creative writing publication/zine Fermaille during the strike, also Bengi Akbulut speaks on the connections between social movements across borders from Istanbul to New York to Montreal. Finally we hear from cultural worker Norman Nawrocki who speaks about the experience of being a cultural worker during the student strike. Also we hear about the Common Notions published book Wages for Students, first published in 1975 and then republished again in recent years, info: https://www.commonnotions.org/wages-for-students Music on the program is the track Passage by Anarchist Mountains. Temple University's successful grad student strike offers lessons for academic labor organizers

On Jan. 31 of this year, the Temple University Graduate Students' Association (TUGSA) launched the first strike in their 25-year history. The decision to strike came as a result of years of organizing that largely began in 2020, after Temple's decision to force in-person classes in the fall of 2020 led to a completely preventable COVID-19 outbreak. Striking for 42 days, graduate student-workers faced cuts to their health insurance, threats to lose tuition remissions, and more. Nevertheless, TUGSA persevered, winning a new contract that raised wages and eliminated Temple's wage-tier system for graduate student-workers in different departments. Although the new contract doesn't meet TUGSA's maximal demands, the mettle and commitment displayed by student-worker organizers offers a bright spot with important lessons for the labor wave roiling academic institutions across the country. Vince Quiles, lead organizer of Home Depot United Philadelphia, interviews TUGSA strike captain Josh Stern to learn more about the story of the Temple University strike.Click here to read the transcriptStudio Production: David HebdenPost-Production: Cameron GranadinoHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Stark and Alvarez make the correction in the second half of the conversation.Graduate student-workers at the University of Michigan are on strike for the second time in three years, officially hitting the picket line this week. Speaking to The Michigan Daily, Amir Fleischmann, chair of the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) Contracts Committee, said, "Grad workers are very frustrated. They're struggling to pay rent. They're struggling to afford childcare. They lack access to gender-affirming care. And I think we're saying enough is enough. The University needs to give us a fair contract now.” On top of that, the University of Michigan administration is once again seeking to weaponize the courts to end the strike, filing an Unfair Labor Practice Charge against the union, claiming that the strike violates the university's existing contract with the union. In this urgent mini-cast, we talk with Alejo Stark, a grad worker and rank-and-file member of GEO, to get an update on the strike, the response from the administration, and what listeners can do to show support for GEO and its members.Disclaimer: Max is a former GEO member and earned his PhDs from the University of Michigan.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

When asked in the interview, Ford tells the female interviewer that she shouldn't fly to Fiji on holiday. The 16-year-old climate crusader says "In the current climate crisis I don't think that that's (a flight to Fiji) necessary". This begs the question so relevant to climate activists: who gets to decide what's "necessary" or where one goes on vacation let alone how one gets to the destination?

Tonight, I am sad, down and fearful. I am once again feeling the Democracy I taught about is in jeopardy by the Republican MAGA party and its cult leader and his minions. On Wednesday morning, we are likely to find out if his Facebook access will be returned as an ad hoc evaluative advisory group to FB makes their determination. The majority of the R/MAGA party are still touting the big lie as is the cult leader himself. Our Democracy has survived almost 250 years, three wars that each had the potential to end our country; two world wars, the divisions of the 1960s. But, can it survive the way too often repeated lies espoused by the R/MAGA talking heads on the far right? Or the blockaders in the Senate, including a couple of Democrats, even. I had really hoped to move forward after this election and we surely have, but I also was hoping the personality MAGA cult would disappear forever.......thanks for listening. Pimlico Academy, a school in central London, made headlines on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 when students protested against their racist head teacher Dan Smith. Dan Smith tried to implement Christian hymns, tried to over-emphasis 'British values' in a manner that alienated senior staff, 30 of who left and were subsequently replaced by like minded ideologues. The head teacher also banned afros saying that they “blocked the views" of other students, banned colorful hijabs, and didn’t do anything after 3 cases of sexual harassment and rape occurred in the school. Today two students of Pimlico Academy join us to explain what happened and share their thoughts about everything related to their successful protest and their racist head teacher. __________________________________________________________________ Follow us on Twitter @LRedSchoolHouse. I had visited Winnipeg to share reflections and texts from a booklet that I put out during that time, the zine is called , Le fond de l'air est rouge, info : https://howlarts.net/words Within this podcast I share an excerpt of audio recorded during protests in the Quebec student strike, specifically in Victoriaville where the Liberal Party of Quebec was having their congress. The street protests were focused on highlighting social injustice and protesting for the protection of public institutions, such a public health care and education systems. You can hear the full audio that I recorded at that protest for @radiockut here : https://soundcloud.com/freecityradio/lintense-journee-de-manifestation-a-victoriaville Also in this podcast is an interview with John Tarleton, editor at The Indypendent, speaking about the importance of independent media during this time and also the history of the Indypendent newspaper project in NYC. Greta Thundberg, a 16-year-old girl, was the inspiration for the global student strike against climate change that occurred last Friday, March 15th during what she calls #FridaysForTheFuture.  Greta started protesting against climate change after she saw inaction from politicians, engineers, professionals, and even her own parents in August 2018. She missed school for 3 weeks to protest in front of the Swedish Parliament, where she started to inspired students and adults alike. Her protests caught the attention of major news agencies in Sweden, which led to her protests having a bigger reach.  Earlier this year, Greta spoke to a panel of international leaders at COP18 telling them that they need to take more action on Climate Change.  Her leadership has inspired her generation on a global scale.  I discuss the impact she will have on her generation and try to squash criticisms of her and other youth action takers by people who are always coming up with excuses.   Do you think Greta is an inspiration?
