Many Americans could be in trouble this Christmas. Amazon workers across a number of facilities in New York, Illinois, and Southern California are gearing up to strike later this week. The strike would take place the week before and during Christmas and Hanukkah, the two biggest gift giving holidays in the US. US Correspondent Toni Waterman told Andrew Dickens the workers are calling for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. She says they're currently at a bit of a stalemate, as Amazon is refusing to recognise the union representing the workers. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chris Manno, an STL8 worker for Amazon joins Megan and Tom with details from a new report from a Senate committee. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released initial findings from its year-long investigation into Amazon's injury crisis. The Committee — whose investigation was prompted by organizing among workers at the STL8 fulfillment center since 2022, including multiple visits with Senate HELP Committee staff on Capitol Hill last spring — found evidence that Amazon knows its injury rate is much higher than it has revealed to the public and regulators. In 2019, nearly 45 percent of workers were injured during peak times like Prime Day and holidays, as a result of company management pressuring employees to work at unsafe speeds, according to internal company documents made public for the first time.
The fight to unionize Amazon is taking place at multiple facilities in multiple states around the United States, as well as globally. Amazon is the second largest corporation in the U.S. and unionizing it is a crucial task of the working class in the U.S. and globally. The path to rebuilding a fighting labor movement must go through this trillion-dollar corporation. In the struggle to unionize Amazon, what is the role of the big, existing unions, and what is the role of independent unions? What will it take to unionize the behemoth? This week On Strike meets with independent union organizers in North Carolina who are fighting to unionize in the South, at the RDU1 facility. Their union is called CAUSE, Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment. They talk with us about Amazon's union busting, discrimination against immigrant workers, and their demands for $30 an hour, 180 hours paid time off, longer breaks, and much more. They also explain why they don't support Biden or the Democrats, and why we need a new party for working people. On Strike is 100% funded by working people. The holiday season is in full swing, and as some people head toward time off and relaxation, workers in many industries are facing their busiest time of year. We are joined live by Connor Spence, a worker-organizer at Amazon's first union distribution facility, JFK8 on Staten Island. Connor discusses his work as a co-founder of both the Amazon Labor Union and the ALU Democratic Reform Caucus, and how Amazon workers organized and won new leadership elections in their union. Now they'll be upping the pressure on this mega corporation to bargain a first contract with workers at JFK8. We also talk about Amazon Labor Union's recent organizing around Palestine solidarity and the movement to stop the US-Israeli war machine from the bottom up. Connor was recently illegally terminated by Amazon for his organizing activity. As a single mother, a Muslim, and a Somali-American worker living in Minnesota, Khali Jama has always had to fight for the life she, her family, and her fellow workers deserve. And earlier this year, after bringing that fight to the Minnesota state legislature, Khali and her coworkers achieved a major victory. "On May 16," Lisa Kwon reports in PRISM, "Minnesota lawmakers passed the nation's strongest Amazon warehouse worker protection legislation with the Warehouse Worker Protection Act, which ensures that workers can take breaks during the workday and have access to relevant quota and performance standards and data on how fast they're working. The bill's passage marks a significant victory for migrant workers—especially Minnesota's Somali immigrant population, of which the state has the largest in the country. For Khali Jama, a former worker in Amazon's fulfillment center in Shakopee, Minnesota, the new bill offers reprieve and protections that she worked to mobilize. As a Somali and a Muslim, Jama said the Warehouse Worker Protection Act ensures some equity in Minnesota's facilities." In this episode of Working People, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks with Jama about moving to the midwest as a child, about her path to working in healthcare and at Amazon, and about the incredible story of how Khali, her coworkers, and the team at the Awood Center, which organizes in Minnesota's East African communities, fought to pass the Warehouse Worker Protection Act.Click here to read the transcript: https://therealnews.com/how-immigrant-warehouse-workers-in-minnesota-took-on-amazon-and-wonAdditional links/info below...Khali's Twitter pageAwood Center website, Facebook page, and Twitter pageIsabela Escalona, WorkDay Magazine, "High Injury Rates Push Minnesota's Amazon Workers to Organize for Safety"Lisa Kwon, PRISM, "Warehouse Worker Protection Act Grants Migrant Workers in Minnesota Landmark Safety Protections"Matt Furber, Sahan Journal, "Amazon's Shakopee Workers Rally for Better Pay, Criticize Company for Not Giving Muslim Employees Vacation on Eid"Abdirahman Muse, Emma Greenman, & Erin Murphy, The Nation, "Minnesota Enacts Landmark Protections for Amazon Warehouse Workers"Permanent links below...Leave us a voicemail and we might play it on the show!Labor Radio / Podcast Network website, Facebook page, and Twitter pageIn These Times website, Facebook page, and Twitter pageThe Real News Network website, YouTube channel, podcast feeds, Facebook page, and Twitter pageFeatured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive: freemusicarchive.org)Jules Taylor, "Working People" Theme SongMusic / Post-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

The historic union election victory at the JFK8 Amazon warehouse on Staten Island sent shockwaves throughout the US and beyond, but New York is not the only place Amazon workers are organizing. In Moreno Valley, California, workers at the ONT8 warehouse have been doing the painstaking work of organizing for years, and now they are attempting to unionize with the independent Amazon Labor Union, facing the same union-busting playbook from Amazon management that workers in Staten Island, Bessemer, Chicago, etc. have faced. We talk with Nannette Plascencia, who has worked at Amazon since 2015 and has led the unionization effort at ONT8, and Ivan Baez, a member of the union organizing committee and a former ONT8 employee who was recently fired in a suspected act of retaliation for his organizing activity.
