This one with Aaron Brynildson gets substantive, dips into hot topics in space policy and regulation, and demonstrates the range of venues in which a space law career can play out (military anyone?). Oh, and we also share our mutual appreciation for our time in the Ole Miss Center for Air and Space Law program, where Aaron obtained his LLM and I am pursuing one. Enjoy!

Since the December release of Open AI's GPT-3.5 model, and the related ChatGPT, speculation has been rampant about how this next generation of artificial intelligence might upend the legal profession. But as others have been speculating, two legal scholars and scientists, Daniel Martin Katz and Michael Bommarito, put GPT 3.5 to the task, having it perform that most anxiety-inducing of tests along the path to becoming a lawyer – taking the bar exam.  How did it do? Katz and Bommarito recently published the results in their article, GPT Takes the Bar Exam, and on this episode of LawNext, they join host Bob Ambrogi to discuss why they did this experiment, how it turned out, and what it all means for the future of AI in law.  Katz is professor of law at Chicago-Kent College of Law and academic director of both The Law Lab at Illinois Tech, Chicago-Kent College of Law and the Bucerius Center for Legal Technology & Data Science in Hamburg, Germany. He is cofounder and CSO of 273 Ventures, and formerly cofounded the legal AI company LexPredict, which was acquired by Elevate in 2018.  Bommarito is cofounder and CEO of 273 Ventures and a serial entrepreneur and investor with over 20 years of experience in the financial, legal, and technology industries. A cofounder with Katz of LexPredict, he also co-founded Telly, an open source telemetry platform, and licens.io, an information security and compliance data company. Speaking Your Brand

We all love TED talks, right? The best ones tell us something we haven’t thought of before and inspire us to take action. TED talks became so popular because they showcased Big Ideas that oftentimes came from or were influenced by the speaker’s own personal story or experience (plus they’re under 20 minutes!). In this episode, I’m joined by Tanya Golash-Boza, who recently delivered her TEDx talk called “How to Kill a Neighborhood and Make a Profit” about how disinvestment in Black communities during the 20th century has led to gentrification in the 21st.  Tanya is currently in our Thought Leader Academy and worked with us to create her TEDx talk. As a professor of sociology at the University of California, Merced, and founder of the Racism, Capitalism, and the Law Lab, Tanya knows a lot about her topic (she’s writing an entire book on it!): years, statistics, and the specifics of policies like redlining and racial restrictive covenants that led to segregated neighborhoods. Her challenge was to take an academic topic for a niche audience and turn it into a powerful TEDx talk for a general audience - and she did! In this episode, Tanya and I talk about: Narrowing down her content and finding the throughline for her talk Integrating her personal story and experiences growing up in D.C. How she iterated her scripts and added more storytelling with help from one of our speaking coaches Joy Spencer Getting feedback from various people in different disciplines How she memorized her script and prepared for the filming What she’s doing next: taking her TEDx talk and expanding it into a signature talk and keynote, using our framework What has been the most beneficial aspects of being in our Thought Leader Academy   This episode is the second in our Big Ideas series. About My Guest: Tanya Golash-Boza is a scholar who focuses on gaining a deep understanding of systems of oppression and exploitation. As a writer, speaker, and teacher, she tells stories of people and of systems to help colleagues, students, readers, and listeners understand how racism and capitalism structure our lives and what we need to do to change this country and the world.   About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. At Speaking Your Brand, we help women entrepreneurs and professionals clarify their brand message and story, create their signature talks, and develop their thought leadership platforms. Our mission is to get more women in positions of influence and power because it's through women's stories and visibility that we challenge the status quo and change existing systems. We committed to doing at least one episode a month on the topic of #accesstojustice. This is one of those episodes. The way Amanda Brown came to our attention was her incredible hustle to improve access to justice for consumers in Louisiana. She definitely encompasses the entrepreneurial spirit, even though she works in the #legalaid field. Amanda Brown's personal website refers to her as "young lawyer and #legaltech geek." Legaltech geek? That's our entire demographic! Amanda recognized a need for a centralized technology resource center, so she formed Lagniappe (LAN-Yap) Law Lab to serve Louisiana's civil justice system. Her organization, she is the founder and Executive Director, provides direct technology consulting and project management services to legal service providers and justice community members across the state. Through the use of technology, design thinking, and operations principles, Lagniappe Law Lab aims to put people at the center of the legal process, bringing a more streamlined legal service experience to Louisiana’s underprivileged populations. After continually seeing amazing efforts by Amanda, Nick Rishwain asked her to join and share about her innovative solutions to civil justice problems. During the recent COVID-19 crisis, Amanda went to work using document automation service, Community Lawyer, to create several simple solutions for those impacted by the crisis. She created a rent relief "letter generator" where consumers could input their data and have a professional letter drafted, which they could then send to their landlord asking for a rent reduction or other relief. Soon thereafter, Amanda noticed the need for some guidance with the economic impact navigator related to the CARES Act stimulus program. Being proactive, she created a simplified version to help marginalized populations discover if they could expect any stimulus money. There was only one co-host to be chosen for this episode. Diego Alcala, a past guest-host, assisted Amanda in creating the Spanish-language version of the rent relief tool. We hope you enjoy this episode and Amanda's proactive efforts to better serve consumers in her state. In the early days of the LLC launching a business might have been a simple task. After all, chances are your partners were close by and you probably worked within the laws of your state. It was mostly a local task. Setting your shingle out in the 21st Century might be a bit more arduous. You’ve got partners in different time zones, and where once you might have met face to face, now you’re making decisions over conference call, IM, maybe even Twitter and Facebook. And all of the paperwork and record keeping involved with staying legal seems somehow past its expiration date. Today’s guest says the LLC was probably one of the greatest inventions of all time, on par with the steam engine and electricity. This legal infrastructure for operating a business helped promote innovation by pinning the cost of risk to a collective entity rather than to the individual. But the humble LLC has a lot of growing to do if it wants to keep up with the digital revolution. Oliver Goodenough — of the Law Lab at the Berkman Center — talks with guest interviewer Zeba Khan about the evolution of business law, and a new initiative he’s been working on with the State of Vermont to let new businesses function online.
