If you're of a particular generation, particularly of an age that had their brains absolutely melted by Tim Burton's Batman movie in 1989 (which we have an episode on the way about), then The Rocketeer was one of a slate of summer movies that hoped to replicate the runaway success of Batman. For some folks, it sure did. For others…notably the general ticket buying public, it fell a little short.But The Rocketeer is a truly wonderful movie that has accumulated a deserved cult following over the years. Its central concept is simple enough: stunt pilot Cliff Secord accidentally stumbles on to a prototype rocket pack being developed for possible military use. The only problem is that Nazi spies want to get their hands on it. All poor Cliff wants to do is impress his girlfriend. Adventure (and hijinx) ensue on schedule.Full of spectacular practical effects flight sequences, The Rocketeer, like the Indiana Jones or Star Wars franchises before it, is a wonderful homage to the movie serials of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Part of its appeal is the simplicity of that “solo flight via jetpack” concept, and it's one that has a fair amount of basis in real history and science! Amanda McCordic is a mother, wife, lawyer, entrepreneur, terminal cancer survivor and a Holy Fire® Karuna Reiki Master. In December 2019, Amanda was diagnosed with aggressive Breast Cancer, and by April of 2020, the cancer was deemed terminal. A classic type “A” personality, Amanda made the conscious decision to live with hope and to focus on healing, rather than dying.  Through divine intervention Amanda had her very first Reiki session 12 hours after finding her first cancer tumour. Amanda's cancer journey kicked started her spiritual journey, and she leaned heavily into Reiki to help her heal all parts of her body, mind and soul. Defying her oncologist expectations or understandings, Amanda was able to totally heal her cancer metastases, and her scans have remained clean since November 2020. While pushing through her own healing, Amanda witnesses her husband, Matt, losing his battle with his mental health. In March of 2020, Matt committed suicide in their home, leading to some of the most emotional and spiritually challenging days of her life. Amanda again leaned into Reiki, making peace with his choice and the difficult path they had walked together. Amanda openly chronicled the ups and downs of her cancer journey and her loss of Matt on her Facebook page, “Amanda's Tango with Terminal Cancer.” Offering candid insight into her path and the lessons she had learnt.  Amanda credits Reiki with guiding and healing her. Amand has such gratitude for all that Reiki is and does for her, she felt called to help spread the light, hope and love of Reiki to all those who seek it, while also assisting Reiki Master's with sharing their light through entrepreneurship. We all think about music slightly differently!  We had to find a way to blend 10 voices, in a coordinated show, with only two practices and a dress rehearsal! Please keep in mind, dear reader: most of us in the group began as semi-rusty amateurs, trying to find our own voices within an art form that had long seemed dormant. Most of us play by ear. The fact that we all live in different states made the project seem unlikely at best, doomed at worst.But: DOOMED we were not! Far from it! The friendships we've made are bounding, beautiful things. And the show we put on positively rocked. Personally, I think that rocking vibe came from somewhere much deeper. The voice we made as a group was something new, something that all of us recognized was a product of our collaborative effort. It makes one feel like taking a deep breath.~ ~ ~ ~ ~My point here is that we all learned something along the way. We all learned how to evaluate our own prickles and rough spots, so we could work well with each other. We were able to do this, because we started with a foundation of friendship, bound with the strange fibers of choral harmony and 4:4 time. We stuck together in the name of love, and a beautiful show emerged, beyond which…lasting friendships and ongoing intellectual growth.It was while witnessing the beauty of what happens when we sand down those edges, to see the marvelous creations we can make, that I created this little poem and piece of music. May it find you in a spirit of joy, bonding and love! In this new format, First & Last, we talked with two amazing women: Western States 100 first-place woman and female course record holder, Courtney Dauwalter, and the very last finisher, Jennifer St. Amand, who finished with just 21 seconds to spare. This new feature gives listeners insight into how WS100 unfolded for both runners who had two of the most compelling finishes at this year's event.  Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, and is a retired school teacher turned professional ultrarunner. Her running resume is nothing short of staggering with first-place finishes from around the US and abroad, including UTMB, Hardrock, Tahoe 200, Tarawera, Moab 240 and others. This interview was recorded just days before her record-setting performance and win at the Hardrock 100.  St. Amand is from Dexter, Minnesota, a former social worker and now recruiter for the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jen has ten 100-mile-races under her belt, including seven sub-24 hour finishes with two of those under 19 hours at the Tunnel Hill 100 in Illinois. Jennifer St. Amand, a 48-year-old ultrarunner from Dexter, Minnesota, originally from the east coast of Canada, was the final finisher at the 2023 Western States 100, finishing with 21 seconds to spare. We discuss a couple of her ticket races where she had impressive results; Superior 100 and Lean Horse 100. She shares her personal experience as a parent of a neurodivergent child and suggests a collaborative approach that involves building relationships with students and engaging them in conversation about their behavior and the impact it might be having on others. Amand emphasizes the importance of explaining the purpose of classroom work and valuing students' intelligence and bright spirits. She also encourages teachers to have heart-to-heart conversations with the whole class or specific groups of students to address the classroom environment and highlights how overloading students with constant work may be exacerbating the mental health crisis among students and adults.
