Hey Tanner, Fuller, Gibbler Fans, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. Today, I decided to cover Fuller House S5E10: If The Suit Fits, which aired on June 2, 2020. In this episode Uncle Joey throws a surprise triple engagement party, and Steph and Fernando practice mingling with their future in-laws. Steve reaches out to DJ's boys. I really enjoyed this one and thought it was a solid episode. Things pick right back up 6 months later and Ramona is nice enough to catch everyone (us, the viewers) up, just in case we forgot the there are now three weddings to plan. Lest we forget that awesome dance proposal in the street with the song "Let's Get Married" by The Bleachers from back in December 2019. Have a great weekend everyone! and as always Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong, Stay Positive! We WILL Get Through This! This past weekend, the country watched as hundreds of thousands of students gathered for the "March For Our Lives" Rally, to advocate for gun control reform in the United States. Today, I am joined by Katie Kerns, who attended the march in Washington D.C. Katie shares her perspective and experience at the march, and together we look at the most significant themes and messages shared this weekend. We talk about the diversity of the speakers, how these students intentionally opened the stage for students from Chicago and D.C. and Oakland, to talk about the larger problem around gun violence in America, beyond mass shootings in schools. We talked about the courage of students like Naomi Wadler, DeAngelo McDade, and the students of Parkland, FL. Both Katie and I were emotionally moved by the stories of these students and their messages of survival and calls for action. I hope listeners can enjoy and appreciate our recap of such an important moment in this movement. TELL A FRIEND. #DeleteFacebook? I don't know if we need to go that far - but you do need to check out this week's podcast about Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, and the way our social media information is now used. This was on display during the 2016 election, and now as part of the investigation into the collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Michael Oghia, an internet security specialist working in Internet Governance, joins me on the show to discuss the meaning of social media data, how it's used for good, how it's used illegally, and how it influences our spending, our information gathering and media consumption, and of course, our politics. On today's show, I am joined by Kelsey Hayes, 8th grade teacher and policy advocate, to talk frankly about the challenges that teachers face in the classroom, and in the modern political climate. In our home state of Kentucky, we are in the middle of a serious pension crisis, and the Republican Governor and Republican leadership has proposed a pension reform bill that would dramatically and negatively impact teachers. Listen to our discussion about the hardships teachers face, and the ways they overcome these financial, educational, and political obstacles to be able to educate future generations. TELL A FRIEND. After years of waiting, we have finally arrived at the premiere of Marvel's Black Panther! Today we're discussing all things Black Panther - from the casting of such a dynamic roster of talented actors and actresses, to one of Marvel's best stories to date, the superb directing job of Ryan Coogler, and the display of the African utopia of Wakanda. I am joined by my wife Chioma Brown, along with our friends and comic book superfans Coy and Laneshia Conner, to discuss our collective reaction to the Black Panther debut. We discuss the societal impact of this cultural landmark in entertainment, the significance of the black and African excellence on display in this movie, why so many non-Marvel fans were drawn to this film, and how the film lives up to the much-deserved hype. Black Panther certainly represents a moment in time for the culture, and we are here for it. *THIS SHOW CONTAINS SPOILERS* so if you haven't seen the movie yet - 1) get yourself together 2) go see it NOW! On today's show, I am joined by Cara Stewart of the Kentucky Equal Justice Center to discuss three important healthcare stories that have gotten lost in recent political coverage. We discuss the future of U.S. HIV/AIDS policy and research in the wake of President Trump firing the members of the Presidential Council on HIV/AIDS, the likelihood of Congress securing funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and how this affects families in Kentucky and across the country, and the impact of the GOP Tax bill on healthcare policy. From the generational enthusiasm of Jay-Z's 4:44 to the rise of Cardi B, we take a closer look at how music shaped the culture in 2017. We also discuss arguably the biggest story of the year - the ongoing allegations of sexual harassment and assault against high profile figures in media and politics. From Donald Trump to Bill Cosby to Harvey Weinstein and more, my guests have interesting takes on the driving force behind this story. We made it 50 episodes! Hurrah! On this 50th episode, we begin a very important conversation around sexual assault, rape culture, and the recent wave of courageous individuals coming forward to share their stories about sexual violence. Today I am joined by Asst. Professor of Social Work, Laneshia Conner, and Taryn Henning, Director of Community Engagement for the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center. My guests and I explore the many facets of sexual violence - in the media, in the news, in popular culture, on college campuses, along with the alarming statistics that reveal that we all are affected by this problem. We look at the perceptions around sex and sexual expression and how these perceptions have led to the troubling culture we experience today. In the wake of Cosby, Weinstein, Trump, and so many others in the headlines - the only thing that is clear is that we all have a lot to learn, and hopefully this conversation can be a part of that for many of you. Thank you for supporting us through 50 episodes and for being a part of this important show. What if you’re trying to market your small business with a tiny budget, say, $100 per month? Is that even possible? Absolutely. In Episode 53 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hosts Catherine Campbell and Jason Pyles teach you how to use your limited budget in a strategic manner. We also talk about the difference between having money and having a budget. We discuss the two ways to get customers: organic reach and paid reach. Eventually you will need to pay to get new customers by competing for their attention. It doesn’t matter how much you spend; it matters how effectively you target your campaigns. During this show we also give you two important tips that you must know prior to beginning your marketing. We also discuss tracking each part of your marketing funnel for your assessment of ROI (or loss) with your paid marketing strategies. There are plenty of free tools that you can use to generate marketing for brand awareness and new leads. If you only have $100 to invest in marketing, then you’ll be spending more time than money while trying to generate organic reach. You will use social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Snapchat, etc.), free photo sources, free photo and video editing tools, email marketing, blogging, and more! Join us to learn about marketing your business on a small budget. “One of the biggest places where small businesses fail is not that they don’t know how to budget for marketing, but they don’t know what to spend that money on.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! In Episode 52 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hosts Catherine Campbell and Jason Pyles answer a question from Craig, who asks how to promote his podcast about corporate real estate. Craig says he has between 50 to 60 episodes now, and he would like to start promoting them. To answer Craig’s question, we spend some time discussing the nature of podcasting and where it falls among the various marketing media tools. Podcasting is an interesting format that is an effective blend of traditional radio programming and blogging. We also discuss how podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint. During this episode we review some ideas for using social media to grow your podcast, and we also talk about a method for promoting media that’s audio-based on visual platforms. We also discuss approaches for tapping into avenues of promotion that are conducive to your niche industry, which in this case is corporate real estate. We talk about some do’s and don’ts, and we also offer a number of action-items that Craig and others can do to promote their audio podcasts. Please join us! “You want to have a great niche topic, and you want to bring a lot of value to that topic and charisma to your show. … You want to make sure you have an SEO-friendly description and show notes. And you want to stay on a consistent schedule.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! LEAVE A REVIEW ON iTUNES, AND SUBSCRIBE TO GET NEW MARKETING EPISODES ON THE GO. In Episode 51 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hosts Catherine Campbell and Jason Pyles kick off the episode by talking about the historic total solar eclipse of 2017. But the primary focus of this episode is marketing on a budget for small businesses. Even if you own a small business, it is crucial that you keep track of your marketing budget and plan appropriately for these necessary expenses. One purpose for marketing is to increase brand awareness, but we realize that it’s difficult to see a direct correlation of how that pays off. The good news is there are ways to track exactly where your money is going. During this episode, we talk about the benefits of hiring an accountant to assist you, if you’re not a numbers person. Naturally, we provide some guidelines for creating your marketing budget. Many companies dip into their sales and marketing budgets, so we recommend setting up a separate business checking account that you can use solely for marketing. Remember, your marketing budget and operating capital are not the same. We also explain how to build your marketing budget in such a way that you can scale it to correspond with the growth of your business. In Episode 51, we also discuss fixed expenses, one-time expenses and variable expenses. In short, this particular show is essentially “Marketing Budget 101.” Join us! “It kills me when people just say, ‘Oh, I think I’m going to just make this commercial.’ … And they’re not really thinking it through because somebody just came to them and said, ‘Here’s a great deal on buying air time at a reduced rate.’ But if it’s going to be at 2 in the morning, between commercials for shows that your target marketing won’t be watching — then who cares? That’s a terrible waste of your money!” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! LEAVE A REVIEW ON iTUNES, AND SUBSCRIBE TO GET NEW MARKETING EPISODES ON THE GO. We have hit our first milestone here on the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast: Your hosts Catherine Campbell and Jason Pyles are celebrating their 50th episode this week by talking about push notifications and remarketing! (We sure know how to party, don’t we?) Understanding when and how often to remarket to your customers all comes down to timing and a little discretion. Obviously, it’s important that you don’t harass your clientele with excessive marketing messages. An over-zealous approach can yield adverse repercussions. Instead, the trick is to find out what would likely be the best time for remarketing to your customers — and then whatever you do — don’t overdo it! In Episode 50, we provide some useful counsel and extend a challenge to help you to set up a strategically smart campaign. Due to widespread use and overly aggressive marketing, the push notification has already saturated the marketplace and is in danger of just becoming more white noise that customers tune out. Has your marketing strategy ever been so good you could taste it? Or smell it? Well, seeing is believing, and believe it or not, with some businesses, this can actually be the case through sensory marketing. Do you run a company that could benefit from the wonders of sensory marketing? In Episode 49 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hosts Catherine Campbell and Jason Pyles discuss the fascinating world of sensory marketing and some of its best-kept secrets for retail stores and pop-up shops. For most companies, sight, sound and smell are usually the three most important considerations when trying to attract and retain customers through sensory marketing. Naturally, businesses whose “bread and butter” is the food and beverage industry dedicate much of their focus to taste. And clothing, furniture and carpet stores, just to name a few, lean on texture to enhance their sensory marketing efforts. Think about what you’re selling to your customers and make sure their experience with your product and its presentation is complementing all five of their senses. During this episode, we also spend some time considering the case of Abercrombie & Fitch, a brand that has historically nailed sensory marketing by selling the way people will feel while wearing its clothing. Have you heard what’s being said about the power of word of mouth for marketing? Everybody’s talking about it. But is everybody also talking about your brand? That’s the question… Welcome to the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, hosted by Catherine Campbell and Jason Pyles. In Episode 48 we talk to you about how to achieve good word of mouth for your business. In the midst of all the noise and all the distractions of your competitors, word of mouth marketing remains among the most effective methods for spreading information about your brand. We discuss how word of mouth pertains to the way people talk about your brand, and how that can help (or hurt) your company. The marketing space is so crowded, our target audience’s trust has been diluted. They don’t know what to believe anymore. This is where word of mouth comes in handy. People trust the advisers of their lives before they will trust a barrage of blatant marketing messengers. In this episode, we make a distinction between several tiers of word-of-mouth influencers. We talk about “happy customers” and their willingness to leave a five-star review, without taking the time to write very much. If someone asks, happy customers will spread the word on your behalf, but they won’t necessarily take the initiative. We also talk about another group we refer to as cult followers. These people actively try to persuade others to share in the experience of your brand. They want to be the person who exposes their friends to your product or experience. Cult followers are your fans who have an initiation process, of sorts, for those who are closest to them. They primarily influence within their inner circle. In Episode 48, you will also learn about brand evangelists, brand ambassadors, and paid influencers, so be sure to listen to learn more! “You can’t control word of mouth, which is one of the best things about it, and one of the most powerful reasons why it works. But you can influence it, and you can help it grow.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! LEAVE A REVIEW ON iTUNES, AND SUBSCRIBE TO GET NEW MARKETING EPISODES ON THE GO. In Episode 47 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell and her producer Jason Pyles discuss the benefits of “back-to-school marketing,” why it works, and how it works best. We talk about how the returning students aren’t really the target audience for back-to-school marketing; it’s the parents! Back-to-school marketing appeals to the feelings of nostalgia and fond memories of those who haven’t returned to school in many years. When reminded of that bittersweet, bygone era, there are certain emotions conjured within the graduate. You can be an effective marketer and cut through much of the noise, if you’re able to capture the emotion of that time, rather than focusing on the features and benefits of your products. In this episode, we give you a sample of a campaign that’s built around “A Day in the Life of a Water Bottle.” This sort of marketing message tends to affect people on an emotional level. We extend a homework challenge for you to write out your own story-driven marketing campaign that encompasses the universal emotions we all feel upon hearing the phrase “back to school.” Take your seats and join us for this episode. Class is now in session! “Look at the universal emotions of what it’s like to be back at school in those first few weeks and try to recreate those emotions and atmosphere in your marketing campaign. Instead of trying to focus on the product that you’re selling, find a way to fit that product into a nostalgic narrative.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Welcome back for Episode 46 of the short and sweet audio series from Bright Planning. In Part 2 of our “Marketing Today: What’s Hot or Not” discussion, your host Catherine Campbell and producer Jason Pyles bring you a few more public service announcements to help you update your digital marketing strategy. Your friends here on The Bright Planning Marketing Podcast recognize that, if you have a small team, you probably won’t have a lot of time to employ every available marketing tactic, nor will you have time to test each approach to analyze its effectiveness. Plus, we all like our comfort zones, so it’s easy to slip into a rut, sticking with strategies that are familiar, even if they’re no longer as useful as they once were. In this show, we talk a lot about Twitter and whether your company should still be using it for marketing. We even explain how an unlikely business type could still be Twitter-friendly to its community. We discuss podcasting and its power to build a community that trusts your message and by extension, your brand. We also talk about amateur podcasting’s limitations when it comes to traditional advertising, and we emphasize that podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint. In Episode 46, we discuss how QR codes are now “the mullet of marketing” and should be avoided, much like bygone hairstyles… And perhaps for the first time, you will get to hear Catherine and Jason at odds over a company’s use of coupons, as they express their opinions about savings programs and discount cards. And before we wrap up the show, we even tease a future episode about real-time, retail personalization, so join us! “If you want to do a podcast to lead in a very indirect way to marketing and sales, you have to be willing to put in the time.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Are you looking to learn what’s hot and what’s not in digital marketing? Well, you’ve come to the right place: You’re listening to Episode 45 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast with your host Catherine Campbell and her producer Jason Pyles. In this first of a two-part episode, we examine some of the hottest trends in marketing, as well as a few strategies that are now waning. Specifically, we take some time to discuss Facebook and Facebook contests, chatbots, eBooks and whitepapers, blogging, email “challenges,” webinars, live video, and experiential marketing and events. During this podcast, we also talk about the hierarchy of the top three most valuable commodities in the digital marketing landscape: 1. Attention 2. Knowledge 3. Time. We also review the merits of giving away valuable content without requiring an email address. And we spend some time talking about the importance of humanizing your business and making it more personalized for your customers. “Your ad budgets aren’t going away; they’re just shifting from one place to another.” If you’re a business owner who is mindful of your social and environmental responsibilities, and you would like to receive our free sustainable marketing guide, “Beyond Recycled Paper,” please visit http://www.brightplanning.com/. Which type of postal mailings do you receive the most? Bills, you say? It probably seems like it. But more than likely, you receive a mountain of direct mail (aka “junk mail”). Naturally, those direct mail pieces are the marketing campaigns of hopeful companies. But if we’re always tossing those unsolicited ads into the recycling bin, this begs the question: What makes a successful direct mail campaign? Here in Episode 44 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell and producer Jason Pyles discuss direct mail marketing strategies (while experiencing intermittent attacks on air from Catherine’s curious cats). Design your direct mail campaigns to make your recipients feel as though they are part of a larger movement. Make your mail piece attractive and try to personalize it. Craft your message to be about the recipient, not just rhetoric about your company. Use this opportunity to describe how you can help your prospective customers solve their problems. When planning your direct mail campaign, try to provide something useful, such as a branded keepsake. For instance, a direct mail piece for a lawn care service might consist of an attractive refrigerator magnet that features a schedule for that year’s lawn care maintenance. Also, remember that most people enjoy surprises. Who doesn’t like to open something personal that feels like a gift? You could include inexpensive swag items, such as a pencil, an eraser, or a magnet — all branded with your company name and logo, of course. And if you can, avoid mass printings; instead, commission a temp or a part-time employee with good penmanship to personally address all your recipients’ envelopes by hand. In this entertaining episode, we even briefly mention the power of “scent marketing,” through which companies seek to evoke nostalgia in their recipients or to create an olfactory association with their brand. We make direct mail even more exciting than it sounds! Join us! “Email is completely oversaturated. Everybody is starting to sound the same, because everybody is … swiping all this content and reproducing it with the same tone and same length.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! You’re listening to Episode 43 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast with your hostess Catherine Campbell and her producer, Jason Pyles. During this episode, we discuss the ways in which social media’s capacity for constant connection affect business. For instance, we talk about the importance of paying attention to what people are saying about your brand on social media, without taking it too much to heart and running the risk of letting your audience hijack your brand story. In this episode, we talk about how to enjoy more personalized and meaningful interactions with your customer base through social media. We talk about how social media is shifting the traditional methods for providing customer service. You will hear us examine what is expected from businesses as they interact with their customers on social media. And this leads to a discussion of “chat bots” or automated messaging. We talk about how you can reduce the amount of time that you’re spending on social media. We also discuss how social media ads will never be less expensive than they are right now. We hope you will join us for this episode! “I actually very rarely contact businesses through social media. If I have a great experience as a consumer, I might tag that business in a status update, but I typically don’t contact them through their Facebook business page or through Twitter.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Do you prefer to buy products that you can see and hold in your hands? Or are you just as comfortable with purchasing intangible products? In Episode 42 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hostess Catherine Campbell and Jason the producer spend some time talking about the respective challenges of trying to sell tangible versus intangible products. We talk about the divide between the older generations that have always been consumers who could purchase physical objects and the younger, emerging generations that are equally as willing to spend their money on more abstract goods and services. During this show we discuss how these purchasing preferences continue to pose a challenge for businesses that sell less tangible products and services, such as the paid version of an app, tour services, eBooks, vacations, subscriptions, etc. These are the businesses whose focus is more about paying for experiences rather than concrete products. We also talk about the importance of finding out what your customers are looking for and their consumer preferences. Join us in Episode 42 to learn more! “On one side, we have the … technology that is taking over a lot of tangible buying experiences and replacing those with subscriptions, automations, digital versions of the physical products … that we used to love.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! In Episode 41 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hostess Catherine Campbell and Jason the producer examine why certain marketing campaigns are successful while others are not. We discuss how the most effective campaigns tend to be bold and courageous. In a world where everything is so crazy and unsure, a courageous message is both appealing and attractive. Consumers notice companies with confidence, companies that take a stand! During this show, we also talk about how important it is to carve out your target audience and ask them to do something specific while making sure to explain why. And of course, the explanation should tie into a larger, more universal theme that resonates among your prospective customers. So, the key is to be specific in your targeting with a very specific call to action. We spend some time talking about historic examples where companies were brave and bold in their marketing campaigns. There are those that were extremely effective, and there are those that were less effective. We’ll talk about both, so join us for Episode 41 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast! “And people went crazy over this ad and started sharing it everywhere. … Why? Because it was courageous. It was willing to do something completely different, to take a risk, to make a commercial that was unexpected.” Links for this episode: Flashback to our 2017 Super Bowl marketing episode: https://soundcloud.com/brightplanning/27-why-mobile-marketing-is-a-best-kept-secret We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! What do you want to know about your customers? How can you get your customers to be more engaged and invested in this learning / sharing process? How can you reward your prospects? For the answers to these questions and many more, we suggest marketing with quizzes. In Episode 40 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hostess Catherine Campbell and producer Jason Pyles discuss how quizzes allow you to locate your target market. Quizzes are an effective marketing tool for promoting customer engagement. We also talk about how quizzes work by feeding into the participant’s ego through providing validation and reaffirmation of beliefs. Internet quizzes get your audience clicking and taking action with your company. During this show, we also discuss how initial exposure to a quiz (rather than an ad) can significantly increase engagement. We talk about the differences between long-term attention versus short-term attention, as well as the distinctions between cold traffic, warm traffic and hot traffic. We know our listeners are all sufficiently humble, but we still think you will enjoy this “egotistical episode.” Join us! “Nobody wants to be directly sold to, until they’re ready …” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Words have power. Correction: The right words have power. One word can change everything in a marketing ad. In Episode 39 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hostess Catherine Campbell discusses the importance of choosing your words with precision to ensure that you’re capturing the true intent of your marketing message. Remember that your copy writing represents your business. Write your content with an active voice rather than resorting to weak, passive language. In this show, we also talk about re-thinking and re-writing your content. We discuss the movement and musicality of language and how well-crafted slogans are more influential and more memorable. And when crafting your ads, think about what emotions you want to conjure within your audience. Naturally, be careful about the usual grammatical pitfalls. And if you don’t fancy yourself a writer, then remember that a copy editor can be your secret weapon to give you an edge over your competition. We would also recommend establishing a house style guide to clearly define the key words that you want to associate with your brand (and the words you wish to avoid). Beware of using tired buzz words that have oversaturated the marketplace. And we also caution you to be careful about the connotation and denotation of words. In this episode, we also warn about describing your brand by comparing it to more prominent brands. We also advise you to make your copy as “you-centered” as possible, meaning, about the customer, not about your business. In short, all words have meaning, so be certain that you’ve selected the right words to talk about your brand. “I think that slogans are the icing on the cupcake of your brand.” Links for this episode: We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! On today's show, I am joined by a special guest, Ms. Danita Jones, founding principal of Capital Prep Harlem in Harlem, New York, for an important, unique conversation about charter schools. Mrs. Jones is a lifelong educator and principal of the newly-inaugurated Capital Prep Harlem, founded by fellow educator and charter school founder and advocate, Dr. Steve Perry, along with entertainment mogul, Sean "Diddy" Combs. In the wake of the Kentucky legislature enacting a bill to allow charter schools in Kentucky, I wanted to have a frank conversation with this experienced educator and charter school proponent about the realities, strengths, and challenges of the charter school system. Mrs. Jones shares her experience as an educator, her motivation to become a teacher and to influence the lives of other students, and shares her journey to the Capital Prep network with Dr. Perry. We discuss the more controversial issues around charter schools including funding, innovation opportunities, standards and accountability, and management. We look at the role politics has played in shaping the charter school conversation, and we also discuss the realistic metrics for success in charter schools. Mrs. Jones shares valuable insights about her time with Capital Prep in Hartford, CT and Harlem, NY, its 100% matriculation rate, and their school's unique approach to supporting the personal growth and development of each student beyond their academic coursework. I also ask her what it's like to be a founder of a new school in New York with an icon like Diddy, and what it means for individuals with unparalleled platforms to lend their voice to these education discussions. This is an illuminating conversation about charter schools, and one that can offer guidance around a controversial topic. Please take a moment to listen and enjoy this important episode. In Episode 38 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hostess Catherine Campbell warmly encourages you to conduct six-month “look-backs” to help you assess your progress with your marketing goals. You’ve heard what happens when you assume, right? That little cautionary maxim still seems to hold true for marketing, as well. In Episode 37 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell explains why business owners should not assume that they know their customers. Smaller companies don’t always have access to data about their clientele, so they will just assume that they understand who their customers are and what they want. Unfortunately, assuming something about your customers that is completely incorrect can be costly for your business. Therefore, if you’re not a numbers person, we encourage you to hire someone who has such a passion that he or she may crunch your numbers and analyze the data about your company. If you’re a marketer, you must understand how important it is to show the CFO of your company the numbers behind your marketing campaigns. If you know what to look for and what you’re looking at in the data, then you can make the case to support your marketing budget and your decisions for your campaigns. There are many different types of data available. You don’t have to buy lists or statistics reports, but there are those who produce research on data that specifically pertain to your industry. We encourage you to set aside some of your budget to purchase that information which can inform you of the changes that are happening within your industry. In Episode 37, we also share an example of the types of problems that come from making assumptions about a customer base (without the help of data). Then we describe what happened after using the proper data to make our marketing decisions. And as a bonus, we begin this episode by briefly discussing how to respond to upset customers or negative feedback on social media. We talk about how to deal with “trolls” or those who are spiteful and negatively affecting your business. We also provide some tips about interacting with other brands on social media. “Remember that the most important conversations that you can have for your business often happen offline.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Lights! Camera! Action! In Episode 36 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell and her producer Jason Pyles discuss the powerful results of movie marketing. Though we suspect few of our listeners are trying to market a film right now, we hope the examples discussed during this show will inspire you to create an experience or a campaign that will generate buzz within your community toward one of your products, events or services. Hollywood’s marketing machine has been so successful because it gets people talking and drives people to have a memorable experience with its products. Whether movie marketing is designed to generate excitement or controversy, it tends to immerse its viewers in widespread marketing experiences. To provide some context, we discuss a little film history and several marketing peculiarities from over the decades that you may or may not recognize. We also explore some specific examples of success and failure: We look at the very clever, small-scale success of the marketing behind William Castle’s “The Tingler” (1959), starring Vincent Price. We also talk about a modern marketing disaster known as “Mr. Payback” (1995), one of the first “interactive, choose-your-own-adventure” movies. Then we’ll tell you about the phenomenal success built from a shoestring budget with the first indie blockbuster, “The Blair Witch Project” in 1999. And finally, we’ll recount the larger-budget success story that paired some 7-Eleven storefront advertising with “The Simpsons Movie” in 2007. Let us know if this episode gets your creativity flowing. If you tell us you like this show, we could bring you another edition in the future where we talk more about the antics of marketing mastermind Roger Corman. Thanks for listening! “Don’t be afraid to innovate. Don’t be afraid to try something new. If it bombs, that’s part of marketing … The next part is try to think three steps ahead.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! J's Lunch Counter Episode 42 is available for download! Today I'm going solo, and there are a few news items I needed to discuss. First, I explore and examine the criticism leveled against President Barack Obama for accepting $400,000 speaking fees from Wall Street, and why it's wrong to hold our public officials (and all of our public servants) to an unfair, unrealistic standard. I also discuss Trump's waffling with North Korea, and how his words and actions breed terror instead of confidence. Finally, I look at his recent comments about the civil war, and how they demonstrate his complete ignorance about American History, and how much we have had to settle with this President. Thanks for checking out Episode 35 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast with your host Catherine Campbell. In this show, Jason the producer has returned from heart surgery just in time to chat about the phenomenon of Pinterest! Most people are aware that Pinterest is a social network that connects people visually. Pinterest can effectively drive traffic and revenue through visual marketing, which makes it a formidable platform for business. Here are a few numbers we’ve gathered for you to demonstrate the present power of Pinterest: — It has more than 150 million active users worldwide. — On a daily basis, 42 percent of U.S. women use Pinterest compared to 13 percent of U.S. men. — Within the U.S., Pinterest has 70 million monthly users and 80 million users outside the U.S. — A whopping 67 percent of Pinterest users are Millennials, who have billions of dollars that they’re looking to spend. - And speaking of billions, Pinterest is now worth $11 billion! If you’re a small business owner, we’d recommend that you consider how Pinterest could help your business. Even if you already have a personal account, you can change it over into a business account with one click. Our advice would be to set up a Pinterest business account. Make sure your short profile description is optimized with at least one keyword that you want to rank for. Be sure to include your location (even if you’re not a physical retail store). And make sure your business logo looks good in the profile. Create boards that are keyword-specific. Always pin graphics that are clear and cropped just right. And don’t forget that you can also pin YouTube videos to your board. Create a board and then go to YouTube and click “Share” to specify the board of your choice. In this episode, we also share tips about using private Pinterest boards as a collaboration tool, and we talk about how you can use Pinterest to help determine your brand style. Episode 41 is live and available for download! Today on the show, my guests Cara Stewart, Charles Badger, Christian Motley and I cover President Trump's first 100 days in office. From the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court to the failed attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare, the Trump administration has struggled to demonstrate any measurable success thus far. We take a look at the healthcare fight, the Trump-Russia investigation, the Muslim Ban and more of the policy fights that have plagued this administration. We also take a deeper look into the loyalty of the Trump base and how much losing they will actually stand for. In the mailbag, we discuss Bill O' Reilly, whether ongoing protests are useful or a waste of time, whether Jared and Ivanka can move Trump in a positive direction and whether the first 100 days tells us anything about what will happen in next years midterms. You’re listening to Episode 34 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast featuring Catherine Campbell. In this must-listen show, we give you the skinny on Geo Location and Location-Based Marketing. This episode will serve as an overview for the uninitiated. If you run a local service or a retail store, and you want to increase your foot traffic, Location-Based Marketing is essential. Although about 20 percent of people want to shop online, an overwhelming percentage (60 to 70 percent) still prefer to purchase products in shops. You can capitalize on these numbers with Geo Location Marketing, because it helps you to personalize and customize your patrons’ experience based on their location. And you can even use the data you collect to determine statistics about when people are visiting your shop and so forth. But how does it work, exactly? Geo Location Marketing is based on data about a person’s physical location. This information is typically based on satellites, which provide GPS-supplied location data. And if a smartphone’s GPS is turned off, the location data is triangulated from cell phone towers. This method is a little less precise, but it can still work wonders for your marketing. There are three different ways that you can target potential customers: 1. Geo Targeting - This is the process of reaching someone based on their location. With Geo Targeting, the visitors’ IP address will be used on their smartphones. IP Addresses aren’t overly precise, but they are useful for covering broader regions, like an entire state or city or a country. 2. Geo Fencing - This method helps to draw an invisible fence around your user or your shop to cover a particular neighborhood or a block. Geo Fencing uses the customers’ GPS location (rather than their IP address). This method updates in real time, even when the person is walking around! Geo Fencing is the next advanced step that you can take to make your mobile campaigns more refined. 3. Beacons - The third method, Beacons, are small, physical objects that receive location data from Bluetooth using nearby devices. Beacons are useful for any area that has poor cell phone reception. The data you can get from a Beacon will tell you exactly where the customers are inside your store! The only problem is, your customers’ Bluetooth signal must be turned on (and this isn’t always the case). In order to take advantage of Geo Location and Location-Based Marketing, you must have a mobile-optimized website. And though many businesses have gotten the memo on how crucial it is to have mobile-friendly websites, many small businesses are still unfamiliar with the benefits of Geo technology. But if you can implement Location-Based Marketing with your business, you can start targeting your customers on very specific levels and help to personalize their experience. You can finally start serving the best customers that are closest to you. Join us for Episode 34 to learn more! “People are forgetting how to talk to each other and interact with one another, so millennials will prefer to consult their phone rather than ask a person to help them.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! This show is filled with spoilers - so if you are one of the few who still hasn't seen the film - go check it out first! I am joined by my lovely wife Chioma, and together we breakdown the many layers of this film, from the underlying tension to the premise that an entire horror film could be made on the unspoken fears of interracial relationships, to the symbolism of slavery and the dog whistles of white liberal racism. For Episode 33 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your hostess Catherine Campbell brings you one of her famous “solocasts,” while her co-host, Jason, is absent and recovering nicely from heart surgery. In this show, Catherine expresses her concern that many companies are, as they say, resting on their laurels and merely doing the bare minimum for their marketing. She warns that this simply isn’t going to cut it anymore. Growing up, we received most of our marketing messages the old-fashioned way, meaning, pre-Digital Age methods, such as magazines, billboards, television, movie trailers, etc. She says at that time, the only thing that mattered to her as a youth was the flashiest or funniest or most entertaining ads. She never worried about whether the companies were ethical; she just assumed they were… But now Millennial consumers actively want to know that companies function ethically pertaining to the manufacturing, production and overall operation of their businesses. The way a company runs is now so transparent, consumers are not only able to find out for themselves — but they genuinely want to know — if a business observes ethical practices. So, in this episode, we give you several suggestions for how to talk about the practices and thought processes behind your services. You don’t have to do flashy, expensive commercials; this can be done easily through social and mobile means… Your Millennial customers will want to see the good your company is doing with its services and products. She says a great way to get this message out there is to ask your most loyal customers to help you spread the word and share your story. And you can take the opportunity to send them something classy in return. Join Catherine for this episode to learn more! “It’s not just enough to be good. You have to be better, year over year. And you have to hold yourself and your marketing messages … to a higher standard year over year, too. It’s not enough to just have your story out there on your “About” page, hoping that people will notice it.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Welcome to Episode 32 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, where your host Catherine Campbell brings you a public service announcement about the ethics of marketing. In this Wild West age of digital marketing, companies are privy to and therefore better equipped to deliver more of what you want, but at what cost? On one hand, we have all this data at our fingertips, so why shouldn’t we be able to give people exactly what they’re looking for? Unfortunately, this sort of tailor-made advertising has a delicate and tricky balance: Catherine says maybe there should still be a little mystery and romance preserved with the consumer experience. In Episode 32 we take some time to examine the new normal. Re-targeting ads initially had some degree of creep factor to them but are now commonplace. If your customers visit your site and leave, you can simply re-target them by tracking where they go next (Facebook, Google) and then try hitting them again with another ad. But while it may work for some highly competitive industries, people mostly just ignore these types of "commonplace" ads. We also discuss how, in many cases, the mere need for re-targeting can reveal a deficiency in your original marketing strategy. If you’re having trouble getting your customers to organically return to you, then perhaps something is amiss with your marketing strategy on a more fundamental level. Catherine also discusses using native advertising as an alternative to re-targeting ads. When someone is reading an article that pertains to your industry, native advertising allows you to provide sponsored links at the bottom of the article for more options of “related articles” or “other news you might enjoy.” These types of sponsored links are relevant, and they allow your prospective customer to easily click-through to your content. In this episode, you will hear Catherine talk about how to use public relations to give you great coverage for your company. She also talks about two-device tracking. And admittedly, there may be a couple of rants in this episode, warning you against a few strategies that Catherine feels you should never use! You don’t want to miss this one. Join us! “If you were doing door-to-door sales, you would not go up and knock on somebody’s door three days in a row to sell them something, when they have already said, ‘Oh, I’ll think about it,’ or ‘I’m not really interested.’ You would never do that! So, I always tell people to think of their online marketing the same way.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Show Notes for Ep. 31 – Monday, April 3, 2017 How to Use Mobile Marketing in Your Physical or Online Store A picture paints a thousand words. Sometimes seeing a marketing strategy in action is the best way to understand how it works. Here in Episode 31 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell explains how to use mobile marketing in your physical or online store. To illustrate, Catherine describes how a local, furniture consignment shop has effectively employed a “mobile check-in list.” When she visits the store, they invite her to check in to that location on her phone. And after visiting the store 10 times (and checking in), customers who had been checking in earn a 15% discount off any single purchase from the shop! Catherine talks about how this is a wonderful strategy for driving people to the store, thereby increasing their chance for a better conversion rate among the in-house shoppers. She also discusses how this same shop offers beer-tastings whose proceeds benefit a local animal shelter. Catherine explains how these strategies together all contribute to building a great community around this smart and successful furniture shop. In this episode, you’ll learn more about harnessing the power of such widespread smartphone usage to drive people in to your physical store (or toward your online shop, for that matter). Catherine says the more you can think about how to offer a promotion in real time, the more you can get your community to engage with your store. All of this information and more is available in this episode, so please join us! “Setting up a ‘mobiwallet’ punch card for loyalty programs is a way for you to get new customers to return.” “Your mobile marketing strategy doesn’t have to be this huge army of tactics that you roll out. … You just need to get used to the concept of mobile marketing on a consistent basis.” We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! We are all shaken up and wide awake today as we recap the 2017 Oscars. There are many lessons learned from last night’s event! First, Catherine and Jason address the shocking twist of the Best Picture debacle. Catherine offers a solid takeaway for all listeners: “Even when you’re competing with people in your same industry, you should always do it with grace.” Consumers are watching, and will be impressed by the way you treat your competition. The commercials that played during the Oscars this year were poignant and creative. The Walmart campaign featuring short films based on a store receipt was particularly interesting, and Catherine and Jason analyze their favorites. Overall, the Oscars did a lot of things right. From Jimmy Kimmel inviting a bus full of tourists to the front row completely unscripted to Jimmy's hilarious show-long "feud" with Matt Damon, to pairing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on stage to satisfy the audience's Goodwill Hunting nostalgia, and celebrating Meryl Streep's record number of nominations...the Oscars know that fun over shock-factor wins every time. Catherine stresses: “Think 3 steps ahead on what your audience could possibly want and how you could give it to them well ahead of time.” The movie industry has done this really well with their teasers, trailers and additional content. You can plan months ahead of time and play the long game, but don’t over play your hand, because why buy a cow when you can get the milk for free? Episode 27 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast was recorded the day after the most popular professional football game of the year. So your hosts, Catherine Campbell, and her producer, Jason Pyles, begin this show with a little “Monday morning quarterbacking” on the quality of the commercial marketing messages. We talk about which commercials were effective and why. And then it's on to the main event: Catherine and Jason discuss the reasons why mobile marketing is still a best-kept secret, even among savvy marketers. Catherine describes what’s preventing businesses from developing mobile-focused marketing campaigns. If you think about the mind-boggling number of people who are using mobile devices and the amount of time those people spend on those devices, it’s clear that B2B marketers are missing out on a significant opportunity. Recent research suggests that smartphones account for 75 percent of all mobile devices in the United States, with 184 million total users. Crunch the numbers. With 184 million users, even just 1 percent of that market is a lucrative opportunity for any business. So, we hope you’ll join us for this episode to learn more about the best-kept secret in marketing. Thanks for listening. Links: We want to hear your thoughts, reviews and more questions! Here’s a marketing conundrum, a veritable “chicken or the egg” question for you: Should you use social media to drive visitors to your website, or should you use your website to direct people to your social media, where you can engage with them? There are two persuasive arguments fueling this debate: Some digital marketers insist that the purpose of social media is to drive customers to your website in hopes of increasing conversion. Those in this camp argue that leading traffic away from your website is a serious mistake. But on the other hand, the opposing side argues that a company should engage with its community, and generally speaking, websites simply cannot facilitate the same level of engagement as social media platforms, which are specifically designed for that very purpose. And the theory is, better engagement ultimately leads to higher conversion and more loyal customers. In Episode 26 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell weighs in on this debate and explains why she recommends keeping your customers on your website. In short, you have total control over your own website; whereas, the policies of social media platforms can change at any moment, which can throw a monkey wrench in your marketing plans. Catherine also discusses how Facebook recently dropped its activity feed that used to be displayed on websites. And she gives you some stats on Facebook Instant articles and talks about creating more lead magnets! You don’t want to miss this one. Join us! Have you been spending your resources on marketing approaches that you thought would work but haven’t yet? What’s next? What if you’ve already tried the supposed “best practices” but just haven’t seen the ROI you were expecting? In Episode 25 of the Bright Planning Marketing Podcast, your host Catherine Campbell answers a listener question from Chelsea the photographer, who asks what to do next after your best-laid marketing plans have failed. To answer this question, Catherine speaks specifically to the nature of Chelsea’s photography business and the success that she’s enjoyed through one-to-one connections, as opposed to one-to-many. Catherine discusses various one-to-one marketing tactics that could help Chelsea’s marketing that are also cost-effective. She also talks about how to think like a one-to-one business and how to start networking with influencers who will pass along their recommendations. In this episode, you’ll learn more about the lifespan of an ad in front of its target audience. You’ll also learn more about how to become an authority in your particular niche. Catherine also presents a new mantra for Chelsea’s business in 2017. Don’t miss this one! Join us! “It’s not about the platforms that you’re on.
