This month, we discuss the book "The Soul of Shame" by Dr. Curt Thompson. It was a really fun conversation, and Katie called it her top read of the year. Both Katie and Gretchen loved this book, mostly because it talks about a lot of guilt, shame, forgiveness, and vocation plays out through a counseling lens. While the author does have a Christian lens and brings in the Bible, he does limit his expertise and perameters of the discussion to psychology, rather than theological. However, we felt it showed the psychological impact of sin and redemption from an interesting angle. His discussion of shame being introduced in the Garden of Eden brought together so many concepts at the same time. Much like David Zahl's explanation of "low anthropology" understanding the pervasiveness of shame--and how it is everywhere and touching everything--was at first discouraging, and then illuminating and encouraging. This book gives an awareness of the presence of shame, so that we can call a thing what it is. As we call a thing what it is, we can then understand what healing looks like. It has encouraged us both to properly recognize it, and reach for grace rather than shame. This book talks about the proper function of shame (a sociopath feels no shame over anything) and the twisting of shame. It also shares how shame essentially shuts down creativity, and how it effects freedom in vocation. This book talks about the relationship between vulnerability and grace. This book is full of stories of transformation and growth, as the truth sets people free.

In this episode, Dr. Katie Williams and I dive deep into reclaiming personal power, reconnecting with our desires, and challenging societal expectations. Both Katie and I grew up internally challenging Catholic religious beliefs. They each found their own way into connecting with God, Spirit and exploring their truths while setting aside the dogmas of organized religion. Feeling like you have to show up as the mentor who is this version who is healed, has herself together, and doesn't need anyone is a massive detriment to yourself and your clients. Feeling confident enough to ask for the help you need or want brings you back into alignment with yourself and your goals so much faster. It also alleviates the need always to KNOW what you are supposed to do; it allows you to surrender, accept help and move forward without the constant mindeffery. The importance of taking responsibility for our healing. Empowerment lies in being in charge of our own healing and growth journey, embracing your power, and exploring and finding what works for you. And part of me feels like I'm really making a difference.  Especially being like that first step for most patients.” 16:34 Katie (on a patient experience that got her hooked on acute care) “But it's just the fact that he went from, you know, I'm not doing it. I'm done. Get out of my room. Right. Yeah. We're strolling down the hallway listening to Spotify, talking about his like four and five year old grandkids. Yeah. It's just like, granted, I don't know where he went from ltac. And that's the unfortunate part is sometimes we just don't know mm-hmm. Where these patients go, but just at least knowing that, you know, in the time that you were in their lives. They've gotten so much better…Sometimes being a physical therapist is more than just the physical part.  You know, sometimes we're kind of like those emotional cheerleaders too.” 21:05 Katie (on advice she received from her professor on acute care) “I would rather teach someone how to walk again than try and teach someone how to throw a baseball more properly. Those are just kind of words that she quite literally told me. Orientation day one. Its stuck with me now. 33:31 Abby “My mom was a physical therapist. But she was an inpatient rehab therapist.  And so growing up, like that's really the side of PT that I knew. Like, honestly, it was like backwards from a lot of people… She's my origin story. Yeah. So she she did inpatient rehab and so then I was like, oh, I just kind of assumed. Physical therapy was like always more of like more acuity or more complex patients. And then it wasn't until I was honestly like getting my hours in undergrad that I was like, Oh, actually outpatient is the biggest sector of this.” 31:34 Abby (on getting involved in a Student SIG) “I just would encourage students to try it because I was hesitant at the time. We were gearing up for our hardest semester and I was like, you know what, I can't add another thing to my plate.  But looking back, I'm so glad that I did. Once I kind of was able to get my time management and everything. So yeah, just go for it would be my advice and talk to people above you.” 43:36 Abby (on a patient experience that got her hooked on acute care): “We were helping a patient who's on mechanical ventilation. And it just really brought the humanity into the hospital room was kind of how I felt… And we know why we're doing it. Like, we're doing it for, you know, cardiorespiratory system. We're doing it for digestion system for skin, all of that. Yeah. But we did it so that the patient could hug their significant other. So we, like, got them to the edge of the bed, and they hugged each other. And, like, so we know, like, we're providing therapy, and it's all these good benefits. But at the same time, like, it really is, like, optimizing their human experience. Like, they get to hug their significant other who they haven't in weeks. And just, like, that moment, honestly, I get emotional even thinking about it.” Rapid Responses: What is on your workout playlist? Katie The Traveling Lactation Consultant

Both Katie Oshita and Liz Turner are working with tongue tie families trying to find support and function.  Both Katie and Liz know the secret isn't in the release alone (Liz does a fabulous release tho, and it is an essential part of the process), it's about timing of release, teamwork and functional habilitation.  So how do all these things go together and how does it work for families that aren't getting support, who are learning about tongue tie from Facebook groups?  Listen to hear more about this process here.Podcast Guest: Dr. Turner had been a general dentist for many years before discovering the link between oral restrictions, growth and development, and basically everything else in dentistry.  Never in dental school or in practice did anyone talk about the tongue and the profound impact it has on the body.  She is proud of her two babies ages 5 and 3 who have been her “why” in her journey of discovering oral restrictions, sleep, growth, and the impact that these three things have on the quality of life a human being can have.  As a general restorative dentist with an airway focus, Dr. Turner has the opportunity to treat all ages, and in doing so is able to see the impact of untreated oral restrictions from womb to tomb.  She specializes in cosmetic restorative dentistry with an airway focus always, as well as focusing on treatment of tethered oral tissues, interceptive orthodontic expansion, and preventive functional dentistry.Podcast host: Katie Oshita, RN, BSN, IBCLC has over 22 years of experience working in Maternal-Infant Medicine.  Katie is a telehealth lactation consultant believing that clients anywhere in the world deserve the best care possible for their needs.  Being an expert on TOTs, Katie helps families everywhere navigate breastfeeding struggles, especially when related to tongue tie or low supply.  Katie is also passionate about finding the root cause of symptoms, using Functional Medicine practices to help client not just survive, but truly thrive. This is one of the most important factors when trying to conceive… that your body feels safe and prepared. Both Katie and I dislike and don't use the term “infertility” and have replaced that with “subfertile” which we explain in depth in this episode. [08:30] Pulling A Concept from the Ether into 3D Reality Dabbling in a lot of modalities like art, body work and others to let yourself explore.  Kat sees the connection of Katonah Yoga in how to bring dreams to life.  Listen to this section to hear a story about Kat and Jimmy Fallon's lawyer.  Sometimes a hard experience makes way for powerful lessons and leads to a rebirth. [13:26] TAOU Is Offering A Series of Katonah Yoga Trainings Breaking the training into smaller bite sized chunks.  There is so much to learn about the connection of mind/body so focusing on smaller parts is important.   The magic square = the body is a home. Asking yourself questions for how to deepen your connection to your life. [16:22] Putting Yourself In The Center of Your Dream  Having patience to put everything in practice and give yourself time for things to materialize.  Not giving up on your own vision and dream.  Realizing you will still get tripped up. Putting theory into practice helps you see if your vision is really for you. Your practice is up to you, you get to decide what your practice teaches you and what is revealed to you. Katie says that every time she comes to the practice, the questions are the same but the answers are allowed to shift which feels free. [23:01] Kat and Katie Are Mirrors for Each Other  Spending more time together they found out small similarities they have. Helping each other take concepts and make them 3D. Katie and Kat play off each other and it feels easy and effortless. [24:46] TAOU As a Space For Freedom Kat tells a story about her dream of having a studio that encompasses art, movement and supporting other people. Kat wants to break yoga out of a box, it can be innovated from the root of the practice. There were obstacles in the way when Kat was trying to open other studios, before opening TAOU. People take things really seriously and make us feel small, which can limit our dreams. Sometimes curve balls prove our limiting beliefs to ourselves. Katonah helped Kat change her life. [27:29] If Katie Hadn't Shaved Her Head, TAOU Wouldn't Have Opened Katie and Kat went to a training last summer for Katonah Yoga.  2016 was a huge year for Katie, where she got her yoga teacher training as well as got inspired to become a massage therapist.  At Vitality Float Spa, Katie was inspired to massage. At the beginning of 2022, Katie shaved her head. If she hadn't shaved her head, TAOU wouldn't have opened. Katie needed to shake things up to try something new for her professsional life. She couldn't put herself in the center of her work. Kat texted Katie in the middle of her deeper shadow work of trying to figure out her next professional step. Katie had the courage to step away from Vitality, building her confidence and taking the first step. [31:29] Following The Bread Crumb Trail to Bigger Life Changes It's impactful to ask smaller questions to get to a bigger new direction. Options only matter if you trust yourself to make a new choice.  Last year was the year of stepping into something to take a risk, feel powerful and believing in ourselves. [34:44] The Woo-Woo Is Related to Observable Science  Katie and Kat sometimes feel skeptical and question everything.  Healthy skepticism is good for us.  The "right" way vs what feels good to the individual. Do you think yoga is for everyone? Katie and Kat don't think so. Everything is a practice: cooking, sex, tennis, yoga, and life. It's a tool to help you to discover yourself. What is the correct tool? [39:24] Imitate, Integrate, Innovate Make your practice work for you.  Eventually, you no longer need the teacher because you make your practice your own. Return home to yourself. Unlock doors and go somewhere different. Elise wants to also break out of the box that social work tries to put her in professionally. [42:37] The Importance of Community Getting to know each other is the point of gathering in classes.   Eye contact as an intimate practice. Making friends as an adult isn't as hard as we make it out to be sometimes. Leading by example to join people together and feel more comfortable practicing together. Embracing yourself leads to embracing other people. How to make TAOU a community space is a huge prirority for Kat and Katie. Spots for this retreat are full but there will be more retreats to stay tuned about in the future.  Trainings are coming up in the studio: Yin, and 2 Katonah trainings this year. Over my 20-plus years in the behavior field, I haven't heard a lot of talk about self-management. One place I did hear about it was in 2018 at the ABA International conference. I participated in a workshop called “Exploring the Systematic Use of Self-Monitoring as a Behavioral Intervention: The Self and Match System”.  That presentation was given by my two guests, Dr. Katharine M. Croce and Jamie Salter. Katie and Jamie are responsible for the main school-based self-monitoring system I use, called Self and Match. Both Katie and Jamie have impressive academic backgrounds along with several years of real-world experience.Katie, Jamie, and I discuss when and how they developed the Self & Match system and how far they've come since its humble beginnings. We also talk about their journeys into the field of ABA and how Katie and Jamie met. We then dive into what Self and Match is, how it works, and who it's for. The official definition is an evidence-based self-monitoring system that's used in schools, homes, clinics, and more. It's a tool to systematically teach individuals how to self-reflect on their own behavior. We discuss how to get training on Self & Match and how to implement it. This week join your recurring patient co-hosts Katie Simons and Deb Constien as they discuss the experience of being diagnosed with arthritis as a juvenile and the importance of differentiating between the different types of AiArthritis diseases. Katie is the Senior Program and Communications Manager for AiArthritis and a patient living with inflammatory arthritis. Deb is a dietitian, an experienced patient advocate and ambassador for the AiArthritis community, and a patient living with inflammatory arthritis. They both discuss the complicated nature of identifying just precisely what their diagnosis is as adults who were originally diagnosed with a juvenile form of arthritis.  This episode will tackle subjects of particular importance to the AiArthritis community such as differentiation of disease types, early intervention, shared decision-making, Stills Disease Awareness, and the experience of living with an invisible illness. Life with an invisible illness can be particularly challenging for children and adolescents, and our co-hosts share their experiences as teens faced with a new diagnosis and limitations. For more information on living with an invisible illness, check out Episode 12: Invisible Disease. After you listen to this episode, we want to hear from you to keep the conversation going. If you were diagnosed as a young person, are you still using the initial diagnosis?  Have you changed the way you describe your condition to others since becoming an adult or since the medical community changed the name of your disease? How do you feel about having an accurate diagnosis or about changing your diagnosis?  Now, if you are a patient, a parent of a juvenile patient, or any other stakeholder (doctor, nurse, researcher, industry representative, or other health services person) - are you ready to join the conversation? It's your turn to pull up a seat. The Australian online political partisans took a break from getting mad at each other become hopping mad that British freedom advocate Katie Hopkins confirmed she had landed in Australia. The raging about that plus the latest from Cuba and South Africa on this week's Tim's News Explosion. As part of their upcoming Big Brother VIP series, Channel 7 had flown international media personalities, Caitlyn Jenner and Katie Hopkins. With international travel caps to Australia being slashed due to the Delta variant, Hopkins's passage into Australia saw politicians and media commentators left and right call for her to be deported immediately due to her so-called 'racism' and her joke in her Katie's arms livestream from hotel quarantine where she joked about opening the door naked in front of Australian Border Force staff. Channel 7 terminated her contract, NSW Police fined her $1000 and she was deported today after her visa was canceled. Andrew Bolt wrote a column in the News Corp papers condemning Katie Hopkins in the same manner that he condemned Blair Cottrell in 2018 after he appeared on Sky News. Hopkins appeared on Sky News Outsiders in 2020 but after condemnation from Bolt and fellow Sky host Sharri Markson it is doubtful she will reappear, just as Lauren Southern hasn't appeared on Sky in 2021. Both Katie and Lauren have covered the white genocide in South Africa where the nation is still on fire due to riots. In better news the protests in Cuba against the communist regime continue, Joe Biden said the rallies show why socialism doesn't work, Democratic Socialist AOC said the protests are due to US sanctions. Michae addresses her love for the book series and the injustice that took place in the making of these films and the straying away from the great Veronica Roth's vision. A lot of people struggle with this, but it's simply not true! Storytelling is such an important aspect of growing your brand. Stories create emotion, and emotion sparks action! Today, I'm talking with Katie Wallace, longtime friend of mine and jack-of-all-trades writer, with journalism being her foundation. The five W’s are your basic building blocks for any story Who, what, where, when, and why; these five Ws that you might have learned as far back as grade school are still fundamental when trying to tell a story! Finding Your Confidence - with Katie Piper

The Kevin Clifton Show

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2020 63:08

One of Kevin's ambitions for the show has been to interview the fabulous writer, activist, model, presenter and mum, Katie Piper, and today the dream becomes a reality. Katie is one of the most familiar and beloved personalities in Britain, not just for her dazzling beauty and warm wit, but also for her courageous championing of charitable causes and her renowned compassion and relatability.  In this very special edition of The Kevin Clifton Show, we get up close and personal with Katie, discussing everything from balancing work and home, the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone, and the ways in which self-analysis and self-belief can help lift you back to the light in the wake of life's darkest moments. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being busy, and living through a hectic schedule, is a mark of positivity and productivity. Both Katie and Kevin enjoy the hustle of creativity and development. Strictly Come Dancing were keen to sign Katie for many years, but her exclusivity deal with Channel 4 prevented her from doing so. However, when that expired in 2018, she jumped at the chance to take to the floor. Whenever you start in something new, you always feel that sense of being stranded. For Katie, the Strictly experience was starkly different to anything she'd experienced before. She was used to being on TV, but dancing on TV was a whole new world. In life, we must always seek the challenge of the next thing. If we're feeling safe, then it's usually a sign of being static. Only when we let go of our inhibitions can we truly begin to enjoy our endeavours. It doesn't come straight away, so don't expect it to happen instantly, but when it does come, that feeling of release will allow you to enjoy life so much more. Podcasting allows Katie to express herself, and to show the world the real, unfiltered side of herself. it also allows her to express her ideas quickly, with complete editorial control, while they're still relevant. Even if you live in the public eye, it's important to have boundaries. People will respect you more in the long run if you can separate your private life from your public life. Confidence is an issue that all performers deal with, and sometimes struggle with. For Kevin, confidence is a huge issue, and although he may seem like an extrovert on Strictly, in social situations and in normal life, he is very shy. Confidence allows us to bounce back from rejection. The self-belief we must have in ourselves, especially as performers, picks us up in the face of a setback, and spurs us on to the next challenge. Life-changing injuries are just that - they never truly heal. Physically, Katie has, and will continue, to receive treatment. Psychologically, she finds herself having to readjust her outlook every now and then. It's an ongoing struggle, but she refuses to let it beat her. It's okay to be negative sometimes. It's okay to be lazy. It's okay to want to isolate yourself, All these things, in the wake of a life-calamity, are your own way of getting through this. So long as you realise this, and that you know it's only temporary. We're so obsessed with identity and occupation. When we ask “What do you do?”, the answer can be so complicated. It's unfortunate that occupation is how we categorise people. Resilience comes through life experience and age. When we are shown the thing we can survive, we discover the things we're capable of. Confidence comes through our embarrassment being shrugged away. We can't spend our lives living in fear of what people think of us, or we're lining ourselves up for a very poor existence. There's a fine line between being self-serving and arrogant, and being nothing but a people pleaser. You need to say no sometimes. You need to remember that your life is your own. You can't please everyone, so you may as well please yourself. We never really use a positive internal commentary by default. Our standard position is to question, and to worry about something. We need to nurture the positive voice. Thank you for listening to Popcorn Chats! This week, Katie and Michae talk about their favorite film music. They break down their top three favorite muscials, scores, soundtracks, and songs made for films. Katie discusses the love she has had for musicals since she was a little girlie, while Michae discusses her frequent lack of interest in the musical music outside the film. Some of their favorite movie music may be viewed as less sophisticated, while others will be recognized as Hollywood treasures and classics in composition. Kia Ora whanau. Strap yourselves in for the biggest episode of Dirt Church Radio yet. We go all in with a double episode, two full conversations with Katie Wright and Will Hayward, two of the final four left standing at Big’s Backyard Ultra, recently held in Tennessee. This race is the brainchild of Lazarus Lake, the man behind the infernal Barkley Marathons, and is a Last Person Standing event, whereby the competitors take on a 6.7km loop every hour until one person is left standing. Everyone else records a DNF. Both Katie and Will qualified for Big’s by winning a golden ticket entry. Will in Hong Kong at Big Boar’s Backyard and Katie here at home in the Riverhead Backyard Relaps. Both arrived at Big’s Backyard wanting to find and test their limits and it appears both certainly did. Spoiler Alert: Katie and Will were two of the four final competitors, Katie being halted by injury on lap 50 and Will spectacularly timing out on loop 59, thus giving the only other person on course (Maggie Guterl) the victory. What these athletes have undertaken is phenomenal, however what is also phenomenal is the honesty, humility, grace, and insight with which they recount their adventures to us. We’ll let them do the talking. Enjoy.

My dear friend and Bravo's Vanderpump Rules Star, Katie Maloney joins me to talk about a subject that we all struggle with, CONFIDENCE.  Both Katie and I have struggled with confidence at certain points in our lives, but Katie, has really come to an "ah ha" moment, almost enlightened, about the subject.  She has been through it all, with negative comments on social media after being on a reality show,  but her biggest struggle (and same with me) was the negative self talk we give ourselves.  Well now, Katie "gives zero f&$ks" Maloney is here to tell you how she began to stop caring what others thought and started to care about what made HER FEEL BETTER.  And how she turned her life and relationship around when she started to heal and find confidence from within.  This is one of my favorite episodes. Licensed Massage therapist Katie Weso loves dogs, talking about dogs, massage, and drinking, and talking about drinking. Passion topics- drinking, dogs, massage, the rage that bubbles up when people bring up happy endings, my inability to understand technology We spoke of massage and how the “Happy Ending” is a tired old joke that should be retired (Dan’s words). Dan describes his back, leg, and arm issues and asks if he is a candidate for massage therapy. Katie agrees and states he is a typical example of a customer. Dan’s trepidation at the thought of getting a therapeutic massage is alleviated by the realization that he is not so much of a “person”, while on the table, but more of a “meat suit” to be worked by the therapist. This is a good thing. To be the personification of Lady Gaga’s famous costume is to be a great massage customer. Katie gives a lot of advice for people who have never gone to a massage therapist. At the end of this session Dan thought, ‘Heck. I could go to a massage therapist after all!’ There is some question as to whether Katie’s and her husband’s role-playing involve HAZMAT suits ala “Breaking Bad” (as seen here: http://filmgarb.com/breaking-bad-hazmat-suit/) . I will have to ask her “Little Pinkman” for his take. Katie brought up Walter White’s hat. It’s a Pork Pie hat, as shown here: http://www.heisenberghat.com/ Can homemade Kahlua be made with Splenda? Talking about DIY projects. Katie is great with those unless they involve technology, which in this case means computer and electronics topics. Dan laments on how cool online learning via YouTube and similar avenues are. Katie hooked up her LAN (local area network) in her home. Katie thinks IT professionals are wizards. She’s not wrong. The talk then turns to matters of having a customer service mind-set, about caring about the customer on a human level. It is hard to wrap our meat-suit minds around apathy toward customers. It always comes back to the meat suit. Katie hadn’t seen Star Wars until she was dating her husband. Star Trek was able to tackle social issues due to their many-hours of content. Katie didn’t want to perform her best “pew pew” noise. But she came through in the end. Can massage therapists feel the tension spots? Answer: Yes! The conversation takes an odd turn into the land of Chia Pets, and if a Sia Chia would grow the little shrubs in a front-facing wig shape. It had never dawned on Dan that the ‘chia’ of ‘Chia Pet’ refers to the ‘Chia’ plant. More info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chia_Pet . Dan proposes the “Chia Sia Pet”, where the chia plant grows out in an forward-facing wig, over the pet’s face. Katie approves. Katie has two dogs and two cats. It turns out both Katie and Dan got dogs from MADACC Milwaukee. Visit http://madacc.org/ for more information on how to rescue a dog in the Milwaukee area! It’s hard to say “out” or “treat”, aloud, due to the dogs having trained Dan. Both Katie and Dan are looking into getting king sized beds to have more room for the dogs. Camera conspiracy theories. Are our smart cameras spying on us? Dan wonders what would happen if a Star Wars storm trooper were to fire upon a Star Trek red shirt if the red shirt would even be injured. Make sure to visit https://www.facebook.com/ElbowGreaseMassage/ and to make an appointment with Katie if you are in the De Pere, Wisconsin/Green Bay Wisconsin area! Or just visit the page anyway because she has fun articles there about pain management and perhaps unintentionally ambiguous memes, if one has a naughty mind to consider them that way.

This past weekend, the country watched as hundreds of thousands of students gathered for the "March For Our Lives" Rally, to advocate for gun control reform in the United States.   Today, I am joined by Katie Kerns, who attended the march in Washington D.C.  Katie shares her perspective and experience at the march, and together we look at the most significant themes and messages shared this weekend.   We talk about the diversity of the speakers, how these students intentionally opened the stage for students from Chicago and D.C. and Oakland, to talk about the larger problem around gun violence in America, beyond mass shootings in schools.   We talked about the courage of students like Naomi Wadler, DeAngelo McDade, and the students of Parkland, FL.  Both Katie and I were emotionally moved by the stories of these students and their messages of survival and calls for action.  I hope listeners can enjoy and appreciate our recap of such an important moment in this movement.   TELL A FRIEND. We're back after a holiday hiatus! This episode, Annie and Katie discuss their reading resolutions and their words of the year. - Annie's currently reading -- and loving -- All the Light We Cannot See, with her sights set on more nonfiction in 2015, particularly historical nonfiction. Any books in particular you'd recommend? - Katie's favorite book for the new year is The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (a Christmas gift from husband Scott), and it ties in perfectly with her word of year; any guesses? - If book clubs aren't your thing -- for shame! -- start an article club, like Katie did with her friends. Tips for hosting your own can be found on Cup of Jo. - Both Katie and Annie love the concept of setting margins in your life; Hayley from Tiny Twig elaborates in this post. - It's not too late to determine your own word for 2015! Need help getting started? Try Ali Edwards' blog posts about the One Little Word concept, then hop on over to this 2015 workbook by Susannah Conway.
