It's Marvel Monday and Wakanda faces its greatest challenge yet! ABOUT BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER The people of Wakanda fight to protect their home from intervening world powers as they mourn the death of King T'Challa. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER November 11, 2022 | Theatrical Release CAST & CREW OF BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Director: Ryan Coogler Writers: Ryan Coogler, Joe Robert Cole, Stan Lee Cast: Letitia Wright as Shuri Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia Danai Gurira as Okoye Angela Bassett as Ramonda BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS T'Challa, the Black Panther himself, is suffering from a terminal illness. His sister, Shuri, believes the heart-shaped herb that gives the Black Panther his powers could save him, but the herb was destroyed. Shuri desperately tries to recreate it synthetically, but she can't do it in time, and T'Challa dies. A year later, Wakanda is facing pressure from countries around the world to share its vibranium. Other nations are even trying to break in and steal it! Queen Ramonda encourages Shuri to continue working on the heart-shaped herb so they can create a new Black Panther to help protect Wakanda, but Shuri says she doesn't think Wakanda needs a Black Panther. A U.S. expedition team is using a vibranium detector when they get a hit beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Before they can recover it, they are attacked and killed by a group of blue-skinned, water-breathing beings and their sound weapons. They are led by someone named Namor. Only knowing about the vibranium detection, the CIA thinks it must've been Wakanda. Namor shows up to confront Ramonda and Shuri. He gives them an ultimatum: hand over the scientist who created the detector to get them off his back or else he will attack Wakanda. Shuri and Okoye learn from CIA Agent Ross that the scientist who created said detector is someone named Riri Williams. Riri turns out to be just an MIT student. They track her down at the university, but before they can get her to safety, they are pursued by the FBI and Namor's warriors. Shuri is taken underwater to meet with Namor who shows her his home and what makes it so special. Namor explains that he has grown bitter toward the surface world because of the slavery and genocide suffered by his people. He proposes that Wakanda join him in an alliance against the rest of the world, while threatening to destroy Wakanda if they refuse. Shuri and Riri are rescued but two of Namor's guards are killed in the process. He's not pleased and Namor attacks Wakanda. During the attack, Queen Ramonda dies and Namor vows to return with his entire army. Shuri discovers that she can use a remnant of the herb that gave Namor's people their superhuman abilities to recreate the heart-shaped herb. She takes it herself and gains the powers of the Black Panther. Shuri returns wearing a new Black Panther suit and is accepted by the other tribes as the new Black Panther. Shuri is determined to get revenge on Namor for killing her mom. The battle begins and Shuri manages to trap Namor and make him weaker. The two eventually crash onto a desert beach and fight one-on-one. Shuri gains the upper hand, but she has a vision of Ramonda, who reminds her to choose a better path. Instead of killing Namor, Shuri offers him a chance to surrender and form a peaceful alliance. Namor accepts, ending the battle. Shuri plants more heart-shaped herbs to ensure that the Black Panther mantle will survive into the future. While she is away, M'Baku challenges for the throne of Wakanda. Shuri then travels to Haiti to visit Nakia. There, she burns her funeral robe, finally allowing herself to grieve for T'Challa and honoring Ramonda's wishes. Shuri learns that Nakia and T'Challa secretly had a son, whom Nakia has been raising in Haiti. Watch the show on Youtube - www.deckthehallmark.com/youtubeInterested in advertising on the show? Send us a Question!REBROADCAST MOVIE DISCUSSION: Melvin & Dan can only agree on one thing: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is, in fact, a Marvel movie. To focus their attention, Melvin proposes four ambitions that he feels will make-or-break the film for audience members. (originally released November 16th, 2022)Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 44-minutes discussing Kevin Conroy's passing, Video Rental store nostalgia, and media curation (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Melvin liked that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a somewhat self-serious profile as opposed to the more flippant, light sensibilities of other Marvel fare. However, Melvin has four headers - ambitions - that he observed within Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that he felt prevented him from "buying in" to the fiction of the film but may actually be beneficial qualities to certain audience members. His first point covers the film's global stage for a political drama between potentially warring counties. His second point covers the personal character stories within the film. A brief aside from the points, Melvin and Daniel agree: the suits at the end of the movie aren't that good. Melvin's third point has to do with the film's metatextual pairing of T'Challa's fictional death and Chadwick Boseman's real-life death. Melvin's final point covers what he would consider inefficient pacing, such as scenes clearly setting up future movies, or scenes having only one purpose at a time rather than being dynamic in detail. Recommendations: Galatians: An Expositional Commentary by R.C. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Analysis The group discussed the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, focusing on its handling of grief and the character development of Shuri. They analyzed how the film addressed the loss of Chadwick Boseman and explored Shuri's emotional journey, including her encounter with the ancestral plane where she saw Killmonger. The discussion also covered the film's cinematography, underwater scenes, and the character of Namor, including his comic book history and representation in the film. Namor and Atlantean Characters Discussion Andy discussed the character Namor from Marvel comics, explaining his solo nature and conflicts with other heroes like the Hulk and Doctor Strange. He detailed Namor's history with the Phoenix Force, which led to him flooding Wakanda and creating animosity with T'Challa. Andy also covered other Atlantean characters including Namora and Atuma, noting that Marvel made Namor's home city Tl'Chok rather than Atlantis to avoid competing with DC's Aquaman. The discussion concluded with a brief mention of Riri Williams as a new character in the film. Ironheart Character Development Discussion The group discussed the character Riri Williams/Ironheart from Marvel comics and the related TV series. They compared the character development between the comic origins in 2016 and the TV adaptation, noting how the contemporary setting and diverse writing room made the character more relatable and less problematic than older comic book characters. The discussion also touched on how the Chicago setting in the series helped connect viewers to the story, and they reflected on the character's growth from the TV series to the movie adaptation. Marvel Character Names and Costumes The group discussed character names and costumes in Marvel comics, particularly focusing on Namor and his attire. They noted that while Namor's costume evolved over time to include pants and a vest, it made more sense for him to be semi-naked given his aquatic setting. Tiffany expressed frustration with illogical character names and costumes in comics, suggesting she would like a job at Marvel to review character designs and names. The discussion concluded with Andy providing background on Namor's character development and complex nature as both a ruler and hero. Angela Bassett's X-Men Casting Discussion The group discussed Angela Bassett's performance in the Black Panther film and her potential casting as Storm in the X-Men franchise. They compared Bassett's portrayal to Halle Berry's earlier performance and discussed how Bassett would have been a better fit for the role due to her character's African heritage and background. The conversation also touched on Bassett's other notable roles, including Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It and her performance in Waiting to Exhale.Thriller Drama Casting DiscussionThe group discussed potential casting ideas for a thriller drama featuring Viola Davis and Angela Bassett. Tiffany expressed strong enthusiasm for seeing these actors together in a suspenseful role, recommending that whoever writes the script needs to handle it well to justify casting such powerful performers. The conversation also touched on Viola Davis's acclaimed autobiography and Angela Bassett's recent role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with the group agreeing that Bassett's performance helped reintroduce audiences to her talent.

In this episode of The Truth In This Art, the guest is Douriean Fletcher!About Douriean Fletcher: An acclaimed jewelry designer and artisan whose work bridges adornment and storytelling. She was the specialty jeweler for Marvel's Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and became the first jewelry artist to be part of an Academy Award–winning costume design team—an honor she achieved twice. Douriean has expanded into spacial adornment art, creating large-scale installations and immersive environments. In our conversation, Douriean Fletcher discusses her exhibition, Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture, at the Walters Art Museum and how a ring in the museum's collection became a touchstone for the show. Years ago, she found an ancient Egyptian brass and red jasper ring online—covered in hieroglyphics and telling a story of religious belief, culture, and tradition. She saved the image, not knowing it belonged to the Walters. When putting together the exhibition, she showed the curator that same image—and found out it was part of the museum's collection all along.Fletcher also talks about the parallels between her pieces and objects in the Walters' collection, including a sculpture of Isis and Horus that reminded her of the Dogon sculptures she referenced in the Ramonda dress for Wakanda Forever. She discusses her move from wearable jewelry to larger spacial adornment that transforms gallery spaces.Be sure to check out Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture at the Walters Art Museum — https://thewalters.org/exhibitions/douriean-fletcher/Photo courtesy of subject. Both movies feature Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Letitia Wright, Martin Freeman, among many others. Looking back we discuss the impact the first film had on the culture, our love/hate relationship with the first film and the failures of the second, how both movies sugar coat the CIA's history of violating the sovereignty of African nations, and one of the most important thing the movies did was open mainstream audiences to the beauty of Afrofuturism. To check out some of the works mentioned during the episode, follow these links:Born in FlamesSpace is the PlaceNaked RealityBeasts of the Southern WildSpider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseSpider-Man: Across the Spider-VerseInto the Mother Lands: An Afrofuturist TTRPGGuest LinksOfficial WebsitePreorder Indigent!Briana on InstagramBriana on ThreadsLeft of the Projector LinksOfficial WebsiteLeft of the Projector on InstagramLeft of the Projector on PatreonLeft of the Projector on ThreadlessHost LinksEvan's LetterboxdBill's InstagramBill's LetterboxdWard's...

Not yet 40, the filmmaker's credits speak for themselves, FRUITVALE STATION, CREED, BLACK PANTHER, WAKANDA FOREVER, and now SINNERS. He joins Josh to talk about all of it, why he's in love with film over digital, and what it will mean to him to call action on Denzel Washington. Pulp month comes to a close and we get back to business as the gang discusses Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever. Disney and Ryan Coogler's brief Eulogy for Chadwick Boseman and the over-two-hour postscript in which they desperately cast around for replacements for all the guys that retired before Covid. An origin film for not only a new Black Panther, but a new Iron Man Jr. and completely revamped "Namor: The Sub-Mariner", they could've called it Ironheart Origins: Latinx Wakanda. Other discussions include: The contradiction between an idealistic power fantasy and anti-colonial politics, the friction between Coogler and Disney, US diaspora politics, the limits of MCU worldbuilding, murkovision, and more!   An extra special thanks to our $10 Executive Producers: JetChiclete, Isaac, squishward, Walt Lewellyn of The Black Casebook, Tropical Doves, jprestonpoole, Lohik, bernventers, and Owen2.  If you can, please lend some support to these organizations: Gaza Funds PCRF (Palestinian Children's Relief Fund) MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians) National Networks of Abortion Funds Urgent Aid for LA Families of 14 Detained by ICE If you enjoy the show please consider: Subscribing to our Patreon, where you can enjoy exclusive subscriber only episodes. We debate how the newer films lean too heavily on cheap pops and flashy money shots. Falcon and The Winter Soldier has aged well, but its follow-ups felt forced. We also get into She-Hulk, Daredevil, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: New World Order, with a special focus on Ironheart's mishandling by Disney and whether her appearance in Wakanda Forever was a misstep. We revisit how some older CGI still holds up better than today's, and compare it to the over-reliance on CGI in modern films. They unpack Avi Loeb's theory, discuss NASA's pushback, and imagine the public's reaction if it were true. The conversation shifts into Tesla Cybertruck safety concerns, pop culture references to "Wakanda Forever," and a look back at the unusual journey of Elian Gonzalez. From there, the panel moves into politics, reacting to Nancy Pelosi's exchange over insider trading allegations and questioning how her net worth has grown over time. They examine Howard Stern's changing image, his future at SiriusXM, and how cancel culture has influenced his career. The discussion then turns to celebrity transformations, with a look at extreme plastic surgery cases including Donatella Versace and Rodrigo Alves, the so-called “human Ken doll.” Later, they address the growing role of AI in media and respond to Jim Acosta's controversial use of technology to “interview” Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver, prompting a broader conversation on taste and ethics in journalism. We asked you if a burrito was a sandwich, and you said 'no'. We asked you if ravioli was a sandwich and you said 'heck no'. We asked you if an ice cream sandwich was a sandwich and things...started to get a little murky. This isn't just a sandwich problem: you can also have similar arguments about what counts as a cup, a bird, a fish, furniture, art, and more! So wait...does any word mean anything anymore? Have we just broken language?? It's okay, linguistics has a solution! In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about why deciding what's in and what's out of the definition of a word is so dang tricky, why people love to argue about it, and how prototype theory solves all the "is X a Y" arguments once and for all. Note that this episode originally aired as Bonus 9: Is X a sandwich? Solving the word-meaning argument once and for all. We've added an updated announcements section to the top and a few new things about prototypes and meaning to the end. We also talk about gestures that have crossed over in the other direction, from the real-world origins of the Vulcan salute in a Jewish blessing, the two-finger blessing in the Foundation tv series from classical Latin and Greek oratory via Christian traditions, as well as religious gesture in the Penric and Desdemona series, smiles and shrugs in A Memory Called Empire, and more. In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank and Thomas break down the first three episodes of Marvel's Ironheart, now streaming on Disney+. They discuss Riri Williams' return from Wakanda Forever, her emotional and tech-filled journey through Chicago, and her confrontation with Parker Robbins, aka The Hood. The episode dives deep into the show's themes of grief, legacy, and identity, while teasing Mephisto's looming presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With strong performances by Dominique Thorne and Anthony Ramos, the show has potential—despite a rocky rollout and inconsistent writing. This mid-season review also includes predictions, comic book context, and thoughts on how Ironheart fits into Marvel's Phase 5 and beyond. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00:00 Introduction and first impressions 00:00:59 Riri's transition from Wakanda Forever to Ironheart 00:02:37 Chicago setting and the show's authenticity 00:03:36 Emotional honesty in superhero storytelling 00:04:48 Weak writing and underdeveloped supporting characters 00:06:22 Gen Z tone and target audience 00:06:48 Standout performance: Anthony Ramos as The Hood 00:07:32 Natalie's arc and AI consciousness 00:08:21 Episode 2: flashbacks, trauma, and Stark legacy 00:10:12 Stark comparisons and Wakandan tech 00:12:30 Confusion around Zeke and character awkwardness 00:13:44 Episode 3: action, tension, and Mephisto's influence 00:14:53 The contracts, demonic pacts, and tattoo symbolism 00:18:08 Breaking down the greenhouse heist 00:20:28 CGI highs and lows in action scenes 00:21:55 Mephisto's growing control over Parker 00:23:06 Predictions for Mephisto, Doctor Doom, and future MCU tie-ins 00:25:01 Comic history of Mephisto, Ghost Rider, and potential Phase 7 arcs 00:26:46 Mid-season rating and final thoughts 00:29:10 Armor Wars, Disney's past mistakes, and the show's chopped-up structure 00:30:36 What's working and what we hope to see next Key Takeaways: Ironheart starts slow but picks up steam by episode 3, with tighter dialogue and higher stakes. Dominique Thorne (Riri) and Anthony Ramos (Parker/The Hood) deliver strong, grounded performances. The show leans heavily on Wakanda Forever as backstory—watching it first is essential. Parker's contracts and tattoos hint at Mephisto's presence, possibly laying groundwork for Midnight Sons or Doctor Doom. Chicago is a refreshing setting, adding a fresh visual layer rarely seen in Marvel properties. Disney's batch-release of episodes may reflect leftover strategy from the Chapek-era content slate. Natalie's role as an AI based on Riri's memories is an emotional standout. The Hood may become a recurring villain across MCU titles like Daredevil: Born Again. Memorable Quotes: “You don't hear heroes say that very often—but sometimes, you're not okay.” “Ramos never misses. He's the most compelling thing on screen right now.” “These characters feel like NPCs. The only ones that feel real are Riri and The Hood.” “This should've been a movie. You can feel how it was chopped up.” “That's not ink—it's a contract spreading across his skin.” Call to Action: Enjoying the episode?
