Celebrating Women - Children's Museum showcases Ruth E. Carter's iconic costumes

Ruth E. Carter is a two-time academy award-winning costume designer whose creativity and talent have left an incredible mark in the film industry. From the African-inspired designs of “Black Panther” to the symbolism behind the costumes in “Malcolm X,” each piece is a testament to Carter's skill at blending history, culture, and storytelling.During an exhibition of her costumes at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, she said, “It's amazing to me because each one is a different time in my life, and now they're all here together.”Carter's journey to success started when she auditioned for an acting role but didn't get the part. She was asked to design the costumes instead, and her passion grew. “Quickly, I realized that I could play all the characters, not just one. That I was able to do a character discovery, a deep dive into the intricoes of each of the characters and bring the characters to life amongst all of them.”“Each one of these pieces here, they represent some passion that I had. I made lots of decisions on each one of these costumes.”As Carter sees it, making costumes became a new way of exploring art, photography, textures and design. “I can recreate this in a medium that tells the story of them. I see their story, I see behind their eyes and who they are, and it just fascinates me.”Her work is featured in many popular TV shows and films including, “Coming to America,” “Selma,” “Roots,” “Rosewood,” and “Wakanda Forever.” Carter came to Indianapolis during the past weekend for the debut of her exhibition at the Children's Museum and for a panel discussion at the Madam Walker Legacy Center. For young women or people of color who aspire to Carter's career, she says, it's important to know that it's a passion career and not always glamorous, but it's key to be excited about one's own individual path. “You have to be a student of your passion and you have to stay the course. You learn so much even from your mistakes. There is no such thing as a mistake. It is sometimes difficult, but that just means you have to push yourself.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Autumn was the cinematographer for Wakanda Forever—the critically acclaimed second Black Panther film—the series Loki released on Disney+, along with a documentary on the Beastie Boys and music videos for Rihanna and Arcade Fire. We chat with Autumn about her creative process, including any “rules” she has (and when she breaks them), the overlap between photography and design, and how technology including AI and pre-visualization is changing the process of making films and television. Bio Autumn Durald Arkapaw grew up in the Bay Area and moved to Los Angeles to complete a course in Art History from Loyola Marymount University. She then went on to study at the American Film Institute before beginning her career as a cinematographer. She has travelled all over the world and worked with both Film Directors, Commercials Projects and Fashion Houses. In 2022, she became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers. [School of Movies 2023] This is one of the hardest episodes we have ever had to record. I'm not dealing in hyperbole when I describe the shockwave that rippled through our house when we found out that without the slightest warning Chadwick Boseman passed away in the night. He represented, for want of a better term a great responsibility. And much of these few hours is spent talking about that impact. On top of that, there were elements of the film that bothered both of us, and our guests, but the undertaking of bringing this movie into existence, soaked in real world tragedy and during a pandemic was so challenging that how could we possibly be critical? This is why it has taken us a silent year to gather our thoughts. And we are so grateful to our guests for being able to manage the weight and breadth of what gets discussed and land -as intended- in the most human place possible. Special thanks to Maya Souris who was actually IN this movie and gifted us with some precious insight into the filmmaking process. The charity we are giving to this Holiday Season is Covenant House. The series is so successful it caught the attention of legendary singer-songwriter Babyface who asked to participate and entertained the crowd with a pop up performance of "Whip Appeal."We chat about her artistic journey, art as activism, and what it was like to work with the late Chadwick Boseman.Support the showPlease make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and follow the podcast on Instagram.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 10, 2023 is: encomium • en-KOH-mee-um • noun Encomium refers to an expression of glowing and warmly enthusiastic praise. // Upon achieving EGOT status, the actor was deservedly showered with encomiums from across the entertainment world. See the entry > Examples: “Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) is desperately trying to save the life of her brother, King T'Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) … until her mother, Ramonda (Angela Bassett), arrives to deliver the dreaded news: ‘Your brother is with the ancestors.' Thus does ‘Wakanda Forever' address, head on, the tragic loss of Boseman, who died of colon cancer in 2020. In a fitting tribute, the shuffle of iconic characters that opens every Marvel movie here is composed entirely of images of Boseman, a moving encomium to a gifted and charismatic actor who left the stage much too soon.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post, 8 Nov. 2022 Did you know? Kudos to encomium for being a marvelous, magnificent, must-have word for high praise for over four centuries—at least in formal speech and writing. Indeed, like its synonym panegyric, encomium (from the Greek word enkōmion, meaning “celebration”) has seen a steady drop in usage since the early 1800s and is rarely encountered outside of literary or highfalutin contexts. It does pop up in pop culture now and again, however. Music fans of a certain generation may remember a host of their favorite artists, from Tori Amos to Stone Temple Pilots, paying tribute to Led Zeppelin in 1995 on the appropriately titled album Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin. And more recently, the famously loquacious television series Gilmore Girls dropped encomium no less than five times in a 2016 episode featuring “Stars Hollow: The Musical,” a show-within-a-show featuring the line “Not so fast with the encomiums!” Of course, you may dish out your own encomiums in any manner or velocity you wish—and verily we shall tip our chapeaux.

“Barbie” opened to a box office record over the weekend, spawning a full on social media and marketing blitz worthy of a summer blockbuster. But this isn't your mother's version of the pink-clad plastic princess. This Barbie is right in line with the Hollywood fantasy land where women rule and men are an optional accessory, sold separately. Jason says the film has one central theme, not that different from “Wonder Women” and “Wakanda Forever”, men are the bane of female existence and the cause of all societal woes. “Hollywood is hammering a consistent theme: men – regardless of color – owe women a debt. That's the point of “Barbie.” Shemeka Michelle joins “Fearless” to share a female perspective of the film and Delano Squires stops by to add his thoughts as well. Plus, Steve Kim joins Jason to discuss LeBron James' son, Bronny. The 18 year-old basketball star suffered cardiac arrest during a workout at USC on Monday. As soon as the news broke speculative surrounding the event and a possible connection to the COVID-19 vaccines began, but Jason says he's reluctant to go that route just yet.
