GOP Tax Team Lead Talks Corporate Tax Rate, Priorities

Talking Tax

The corporate tax rate is coming up in nearly "every conversation" House Ways and Means Committee Rep. Carol Miller (R-W.Va.) has been at recently. Miller is leading one of the ten House Ways and Means GOP tax teams, created to collect information and prepare for tax discussions in 2025, when much of the 2017 tax law expires. Miller's "Supply Chains" team is focusing on energy tax credits and the corporate tax rate, among other issues. This week members met with former Ways and Means Chair Kevin Brady (R-Texas) to discuss the 2017 tax law. Brady and lawmakers reviewed why certain decisions were made in drafting the law, and what provisions may be worth looking into, Miller told Bloomberg Tax. While the 21% corporate tax rate set by Republicans in 2017 does not sunset at the end of 2025, it's set to be a sticking point in negotiations no matter which party wins out in November. Some Republicans have floated raising the rate, and former President Donald Trump has proposed lowering it even further. Bloomberg Tax reporter Samantha Handler spoke with Miller about discussions surrounding the corporate rate and other priorities of her tax team heading into 2025. Our, what I like to call, political blowhard, Adam Murphy, joined for the hour to dive into a couple of interesting topics, including high schools needing to be more political, YouTube rabbit holes, the Wisconsin GOP "tax cut" and new faces in politics. And that's where we began, with a "tax cut" plan that lumps people making between $18,000 and $400,000 into on group. Murphy pointed out how this will use up the $4 billion budget surplus but cost the state $2.5 billion in federal funding. We then talked about faces in politics, as a new GOP candidate from Trempealeau County is running against Democrat Tammy Baldwin in the US Senate. After that, the idea that schools need to be more political, but it's not what you're thinking and, along those lines, the YouTube rabbit hole conversation was incorporated in. Murphy is the owner of a small business in Wisconsin called Big Bang LLC. He also ran for US Senate in 2022 for the Democrats in Wisconsin, and holds degrees in economics and political science from UW-Milwaukee.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wisconsin state Rep. Jill Billings joins just as the figures come out on the Republican tax cut plan for the state. We also talked about GOP's 2 a.m., bar time decision to defund childcare and we may have solved the Brewers stadium situation. Began the show on the tax cut plan that doesn't increase, but decreases the number of brackets in the state and gives the largest tax break to the wealthiest. After that, we discussed the GOP plan not to fund the UW-La Crosse Prairie Spring Science Center. I floated Billings my idea to solve the Brewers stadium situation and we ended the show trying to decipher why Republicans cut a very popular, effective childcare subsidy plan that's been working for years out of the budget — while the state sits on a $7 billion surplus.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She’s written a monthly bisexual column for The Gayly; written articles for Bi Women Quarterly, including a piece entitled “Solutions for Bisexual Mental Health Issues;” and was the exclusive writer on bisexual topics for the online LGBT news and entertainment site, Hornet, and wrote for the Bisexual Institute of America’s blog, and BiNet USA’s blog. Episode One Hundred Fifty Eight: "Oh they will know about it, Burke. From me. Just like they'll know that you were responsible for the deaths if 158 colonists here." Question: Should everyone involved in the 9/11 attacks be labeled as heroes? There were heroes to be sure, but there were victims as well. Does calling everyone a hero lessen the impact of the word? Des is lessen the acts of those that ran in the buildings when others were running out? Does it elevate the victims to a level that maybe they shouldn't be at? Frank raises the question and it's not as easy an answer as you might think. Also, we start this episode with some real movie reviews, with grades and everything! Father of the year locks his daughters in a room for 41 years. 9/11 documentary glorifies Bush, not concerned with facts. 10 myths about television that people believe. GOP: Tax cuts for the rich create jobs. GOP corporate chairman: "Baloney." Young people are not worth minimum wage, GOP says in New Hampshire. GOP oppose tax cuts for working people. Bank of America to Rick Perry: "We'll help you out." (video) Why don't we resent Steve Job's wealth? Anti-gay Indiana state rep solicited 18 year old boy on craigslist. Disney is pretty sure they don't need scripts. Texas vampire attacks random woman. Teen charged with planning to blow up Freedom High School. Ben Stein argues with Bill O'Reilly about taxing the rich. Anne Hathaway rap re-mixed with Nero and Skrillex by DJ Woody. (video) We are going to move away from news and politics for the next three weeks. If anything super infuriating happens, we'll do a bonus show. Meanwhile, starting next week, please enjoy out Star Wars Original Trilogy commentary episodes.
