Land Snails and their Amazing Diversity

Backyard Ecology

Land snails???? Come on, how do they fit with Backyard Ecology? True, land snails aren't the most charismatic organism in our yards and communities, so it would be easy to just write them off and ignore them. Most of us probably do that on a regular basis. But, land snails are extremely important to our ecosystem and in some cases are critical to the survival of much more charismatic organisms. Not to mention, they can be pretty fascinating in their own right if we just give them a chance. On today's episode of Backyard Ecology, we talk with Dan and Judy Dourson. Dan is a wildlife biologist, author, illustrator, and educator. Judy is an educator, author, editor, and researcher. Dan and Judy have had really interesting careers that have taken them from the mountains of Kentucky to the jungles of Belize and places in between. However, much of their recent work has focused on land snails. Although they are often overlooked, land snails play vital roles in the ecosystem. They help to recycle nutrients. They move spores of fungi and other organisms to new locations. And they are an important food source for everything from firefly larvae to songbirds and raptors. In some cases, like that of Florida's snail kite, a species' entire diet is made up of a single species of land snail. If those land snails go extinct, then so would the other animal (in this case the snail kite) that depends on them. The eastern U.S. has the highest biodiversity of land snails in all of North America. If you happen to live in the Appalachian Mountain region, especially along the Tennessee / North Carolina border, then you are in an area that is especially rich in land snail biodiversity including many species that are found nowhere else in the world. However, no matter where you live in the eastern U.S., you likely have a dozen or more species of land snails in your yard. Some of those species will be native, while others (like the ones that eat our vegetable gardens) are likely exotic. I love the fact that land snails are something that we can all find in our yards and communities if we just take the time to look for them. And maybe that is the point – just taking the time to slow down, look, and appreciate all the little things that we so often take for granted. Encouraging land snails in your yard isn't hard either. Basically, all we have to do are the same things that we would do to encourage pollinators, songbirds, or other wildlife – no separate “land snail garden” required. My mind often focuses on the ecological importance of an organism, so I was surprised to learn that land snails are also being studied for their ability to address a number of medical issues. This has the potential to create another realm of valuable benefits that land snails can provide beyond their ecological benefits. There's just so much that we don't know and still have to learn about land snails and other organisms, especially the less charismatic ones. In the end, I think Judy had the absolute best quote of the day when she said, “You only protect what you learn to love and you can only love something if you know its name.” That is so true and is part of the reason why I include episodes like this which feature some of those undervalued species. I recognize that I don't know enough about land snails and I'm as guilty as the next person of overlooking their importance. So my goal through conversations like this, is to learn more and gain a greater appreciation for some of these less well-known organisms. I've definitely been inspired to start looking for and identifying some of the land snails in my area. I hope you have been too. Turns out that Dan, who is originally from Russia, wasn't so interested in working at a large cooperation at first. Only after he worked on React for a while he thought about this possibility because he thought it would be nice to work together with the people he already knew from his open-source collaborations. So, one day, at a conference, he run into a collaborator, who ask him if he wants to interview, right there at the conference for a Facebook position.Dan said yes, and the rest is history.Well, not so fast. Obviously, I ask him all about his personal interview experience - and in addition, about what he expects from in a successful candidate when he is interviewing himself. To my surprise, Dan explain that there are quite different types of interviews at Facebook for front-end and backend engineers. He says, the front-end ones are less computer sciency. So, he did that one. Another topic I really enjoyed talking with Dan about, were the software engineering practices at Facebook. I still envision Facebook as this hacker place following the hacker mantra: "Move fast and break things." But Dan tells me that things have changed. At least slightly, and that they have now more rigor in their process. He also tells me about why at Facebook they prefer integration instead of unit tests, and how their processes are designed to empower engineers. Dan tells me that Facebook has no strict code ownership, and that he thinks that's such an empowering move. He also explains that engineers have a lot of freedom and rights, but they also have to take the  responsibility for their actions. Another topic we deep-dive into is Dan's new JavaScript course, called JustJavaScript. He explains to me why he started to work on this course, and also about the new teaching concepts that he uses and experiments with to correct invalid mental models that intermediate developers have about JavaScript.  Finally, he talks about React's future - especially the new concurrency support. Well, yeah, I really enjoyed talking with Dan, and I can say that talking to him definitely satisfied my curiosity a bit - at least for today.

Dan Nauman has been forging since 1979 and has been forging professionally since 1993.  A turning point in his blacksmithing career was when he spent eight days learning from Francis Whitaker in Carbondale, CO, and three years later took Whitaker’s Master Class.  With that knowledge, he started his forging business in Kewaskum, Wisconsin.  At one point, he owned and operated three blacksmiths shops and up to 14 employees.  Dan has demonstrated/taught at numerous blacksmith conferences, schools, and colleges.  He has won two international awards for design and workmanship from the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA.)  He served on the (ABANA) board of directors from 2000-2006 and is now the new editor of the Hammer’s Blow magazine.  What we talked about Dan’s interest in blacksmithing derived from a childhood of self-sufficiency at a family summer cabin in the backwoods of Wisconsin. He visited a blacksmith shop nearby and was excited to see the craft was still alive. He eventually signed up to take a workshop from the blacksmith shop he visited a couple of years earlier. The owners of the shop were impressed with how quickly Dan was learning to swing the hammer and asked if he would like to work at the shop in trade for knowledge.  Dan said yes! Soon he was signed up with many ABANA affiliates, the Illinois Valley Guild of Metalsmiths, Blacksmiths Association of Missouri, Indiana Blacksmithing Association, Alabama Forge Council and more, to learn what other’s around the country were doing within the blacksmithing world. His turning point in blacksmithing came when he spent eight days learning from Francis Whitaker, a modern master blacksmith who worked with Samuel Yellin and Julias Schramm. In 1993, Dan opened his first blacksmith shop and was able to survive with an income from this business. Two years later, in 1995, he noticed there was a blacksmith shop in Bailey’s Harbor, WI (the Cape Cod of WI) that he wanted to be involved with to sell his forged pieces. Then Dan was able also to lease the blacksmith shop where Dan took his first class; this would make three blacksmith shops that Dan was running at the same time! Filling his retail shop in Bailey’s Harbor with forged pieces and filling wholesale orders for The Pottery Barn and Kohler were the main source of income for 11 years. In 2003 both of those companies stopped ordering from Dan and went to China to fill their orders. Dan is now a “one man band” working out of his shop, Big Horn Forge. He teaches blacksmithing classes out of his shop, offering 11 workshops for up to 4 students at a time. Dan was offered a grant from the Francis Whitaker Educational Blacksmith Foundation to photograph the works of Cyril Colnik, the famed Austrian-born metals master. This led him to become the project director on a documentary film called "Forged Elegance." The video aired on Milwaukee and Wisconsin Public Television. Colnik worked as a smith in Milwaukee during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works can be seen around Milwaukee—most notably at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum. In 2005, Dan won a National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) “Top Job Award” for a chandelier made for the “Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion”, Milwaukee, WI. It was one of the hardest jobs Dan had ever completed. Another NOMMA Top Job Award Dan received was for a set of gates he worked on in conjunction with Finelli Ironworks. He made 100 compound rosettes and 64 sets of compound square rosettes (with each rosette taking 5 ½ hours to make) for the gates. Dan is now the new editor for the ABANA publication called the Hammer’s Blow magazine. Dan’s meaning of being a blacksmith and how the 9 forging fundamentals (drawing, upsetting, bending, twisting, joints, forge welding, punching, slitting) cannot be found in any other metal craft. He talks about his direction for the publication, including metalworking compliments such as repousse and chasing. Peter Ross, Tom Latane, Doug Wilson and Bob Walsh will be his “writer’s staff”.
