For the past two weeks, Clairsy & Lisa have been taking a trip down memory lane, revisiting 1984 through interviews with music and TV stars of that era. If you missed a couple or want to relive the whole series, they're now all in one place, on one podcast. On the music front, we spoke to INXS' Andrew Farriss, OMD's Andy McCluskey, and Mondo Rock's Ross Wilson. We also chatted to the hosts of some of our fave TV shows, such as Perfect Match's Greg Evans, Wheel of Fortune's Baby John Burgess and Young Talent Time's Johnny Young. It was also a massive year for WA footy and cricket, and who better to reminisce about it than with deadset legends John Todd and Kim Hughes. We also got into the cultural impact of the one-dollar coin, which began circulating in 1984.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

They were shit. I hate them. They're two hairy blokes from Liverpool playing electric nonsense.' And his wife says: 'No, this is a hit.' And the next week we met Tony and he said: 'You are the future of pop music!' He totally changed his mind. And we said: "We're not fucking pop. We're experimental.'"I nya "Hemma hos Strage" pratar OMD om sitt 14:e album "Bauhaus staircase", om hur regissören John Hughes fick dem att skriva "If you leave" eftersom han ändrat slutet på sin nya film "Pretty in pink", om Kraftwerks spelning på Liverpool Empire 1975 (dit Paul inte fick gå för sin mamma), om kärleken till Oskar Schlemmer och abstrakt 1900-talskonst, om skivbolaget som sa att de var tvungna att välja om de ville vara Karlheinz Stockhausen eller Abba (varpå de svarade "Why can't we be both?") och om att spela förband till Depeche Mode på den legendariska Rose Bowl-konserten i Pasadena 1988. For this very special episode, Tim Burgess is was joined for a live Listening Party by Andy McCluskey, the lead singer and bassist of one of the most influential synth-pop acts in history, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.Pioneers of electronic music, OMD were one of the earliest synthesizer-led bands to emerge from the post-punk scene, influencing many artists since, and making their presence felt in the Second British Invasion in the US with the advent of MTV. Simply put, OMD are partly responsible for the sound that defined the 80s, and the album they are discussing, Architecture & Morality, remains one of the enduring records of that era.Architecture & Mortality was released on 6th November 1981 on Dindisc.
Andy McCluskey is the bassist and lead vocalist in British electronic pop pioneers OMD, and the only constant member since their formation in their native Wiral, Merseyside, in 1978. Having sold to date over 40 million records globally, the group recently released their fourteenth studio album, Bauhaus Staircase. They tour in the UK in 2024. New music from Ambos, The Feelies, as well as our conversation with Andy McCluskey of OMD
Andy McCluskey is a founding member and lead vocalist of OMD (aka Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark). His band has sold over 40 million records worldwide. They are electronic synth pioneers and one of Britains' best-loved pop groups. OMD conquered the United States with their 1986 hit, "If You Leave" from the Pretty In Pink soundtrack. They have also achieved 12 top 20 hits on the UK Singles Chart and three top 20 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Following the celebration of their 40th anniversary last year, OMD have released their first new studio album since the 2017 release of The Punishment Of Luxury, a record entitled Bauhaus Staircase. The new album dropped on October 27th, 2023. The press release says Bauhaus Staircase is OMD's most explicitly political record; however Andy tells me that art and politics have always been at the forefront of their songwriting themes. Like many artists, Andy rediscovered his creativity, thanks to the boredom of lockdown. We talk about this, plus their new album, the band's stunning new music videos, memories of the first OMD gig, art, politics, OMD's participation in the forthcoming Dark Waves Festival, Liverpool F.C., and the longevity of his voice. It was a great pleasure speaking with Andy. Our time went too fast, but what can we do. He's very busy with interviews, concerts and various media projects. Noel catches up with Andy McCluskey of OMD. The electronic band just released their latest studio album, Bauhaus Staircase, to rave reviews. It debuted at number two on the UK charts. The pioneers of electronic music are showing no signs of slowing down. Andy talks about his relationship with their signature song in the States, "If You Leave," and the moment he knew it was a hit song. The frontman discusses the misconceptions of "Enola Gay" and whether the band enjoyed making videos.
OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) singer and bassist Andy McCluskey talks new album Bauhaus Staircase and why this might be the end of the road for the electro pop pioneers.
It's another great twofer for you this week! First is Glen Mercer of the Feelies. If there's an American version of post-punk, the Feelies are the best example. They released one of the greatest debuts ever, 1980's Crazy Rhythms, but have only recorded sporadically as a unit over 45 years. The band's been quiet since 2017, and original member Anton Fier died in 2022, but they have a new live album of Velvet Underground songs called Some Kinda Love out now. Then we hear from the ever-charming Andy McCluskey of OMD. Since kicking off the band's second chapter in 2010 OMD have been consistently excellent. They too have a brand new album called Bauhaus Staircase that keeps the streak alive. Andy's just the best. Enjoy! www.thefeeliesweb.com www.omd.uk.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Andy McCluskey is a vocalist, bassist, songwriter, and one half of English electronic duo Orchestal Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). The band rose to fame with the single 'Enola Gay' (1980) and took another step with their third album Architecture & Morality (1981). After a few commercially less successful albums (ones that are appreciated much more these days), other half of the duo Paul Humphreys left in 1989, leaving McCluskey as the sole remaining member of OMD, before disbanding in 1996. OMD got back together in 2006 and have since released four new albums to a resurging fanbase. The latest is 'Bauhaus Staircase' (2023), and we spoke with McCluskey about the album, the two stints of the band, writing hits like 'Enola Gay', political songs, doing everything with energy, the value of art, and a lot more! Clive Anderson and Kate Robbins are joined by Jimmy McGovern, Lady Anne Dodd, Ian Broudie and Andy McCluskey for an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy. With music from OMD and Martha Goddard, recorded at Liverpool Everyman Theatre.
In this episode, I speak with Andy McCluskey, lead vocalist of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, or OMD, as they are more commonly known. Andy formed OMD with co-writer and occasional co-vocalist, Paul Humphreys, at the tail-end of the 1970s. Their self-titled debut album (and its follow-up) was released in 1980 at the dawn of electronic pop, just as synthesised sounds were easing their way into the mainstream - and this is where our story begins. We begin by looking back at Andy's interests in art and design that saw him creating the first posters for OMD (see below), his ongoing creative relationship with legendary sleeve designer, Peter Saville, and follow the story right up to today with the brand new album, Bauhaus Staircase, released the same day as this podcast - Friday 27 October 2023. The new album references the Bauhaus art movement in its title, and its sleeve design is naturally complementary, but it is not the first OMD album with connections to art and design. So, join Andy and myself as we connect the dots, and along the way reveal that during this journey of more than four decades, OMD may actually have sailed those seven seas and finally come full circle... If you liked this episode, you may also enjoy the conversation I had with John Petch about his design work for OMD's 13th album 'The Punishment of Luxury'. Check out episode 6 of Art on your sleeve. Over the past four decades — give or take a decade break — the illustrious and critically acclaimed Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) have sold over 40 million records worldwide, establishing them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain's best-loved pop groups. Their 13 long players include benchmark-raising classics Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1980), Organisation (1980), Architecture & Morality (1981), and Dazzle Ships (1983). OMD conquered the United States, and yielded the 1986 hit, "If You Leave" from the Pretty In Pink Soundtrack. They have also achieved 12 top 20 hits on the UK Singles Chart, as well as three top 20 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Following the celebration of their 40th anniversary last year, now, OMD will return with their first new studio album since 2017's highly praised The Punishment Of Luxury, a record entitled Bauhaus Staircase, due October 27, 2023 via White Noise (through The Orchard). The forthcoming Bauhaus Staircase is regarded as OMD's most explicitly political record and the crowning achievement of their desire to be both Stockhausen and Abba - born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown when, as Andy McCluskey admits: "I rediscovered the creative power of total boredom."https://omd.uk.comhttps://www.facebook.com/omdofficial
In the 70s, the teenage years of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, one would have heard new music by word of mouth, from the music papers, and DJs like John Peel, and it is one of these channels that would have led the young Andy McCluskey in September 1975 to see Kraftwerk play at the Liverpool Empire. It's lazy to suggest that Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark were entirely influenced by Kraftwerk – both founder members were keen music lovers and had performed together in a band called The Id – but their debut single Electricity wears that influence on its sleeve. There were some classic synthpop albums released in in 1980 and 1981 but in terms of maturity and sophistication, none came close to ‘Architecture and Morality', OMD's third album. McCluskey & Humphreys always did things there own way: "We kind of did songwriting in reverse. A lot of songwriters sit at the piano and hash out a melody and the chords first. With us, we start with a soundscape and crazy noises and quite often the song will land on top. We then realised we had a knack for a catchy tune". OMD arguably took a wrong turn with their fourth album 'Dazzle Ships', released in 1983."We forgot to sugar coat the experiment. The album shipped Gold and returned Platinum, more copies were sent back than sold. It did scare us that it wasn't commercially successful. Even though our songs always start as experiments, we were conscious to keep it more commercial in order to rescue our career". But even that record became a classic, eventually. Some 33 years on, in 2016, OMD played a triumphant show at London's Royal Albert Hall performing both Architecture and Morality and then Dazzle Ships back-to-back. That experience gave the band a new lease of life. 2017's ‘The Punishment Of Luxury' can arguably be confidently placed in the top three albums OMD had released to date. Almost forty years after they first got together, a band that was still adding to its finest work. The band's forthcoming album, ‘Bauhaus Staircase' bodes well for their late blooming fifth decade and extended longevity. This, despite McCluskey's wisdom suggesting otherwise. "It's usually dangerous and stupid to make a new album unless you are really going to invest in it. People tell us we're iconic and influential, so we don't want to fuck it up by making a shit album".The band can rest easy. After 45 years working in their own unique way, they and their fans find OMD on a roll. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
We all know Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, or OMD for the brevity, as one of those New Wave Synth bands that has been around for ever, and indeed they have. Topping 40 plus years of making deeply powerful synth pop, they have been at it again with this work that began during covid, and culminated in the masterpiece "Bauhaus Staircase". This is a great piece, that is full of all the philosophy and discussion about the human race, that only one could achieve through a concept of the practicality of the architecture of "Bauhaus" and it's art, and how the human race might just function around said artistic philosophy. I spoke to Andy McCluskey the singer for OMD about this album, how it came to be, what the inspiration was for it and how they see the concepts helping mankind. In short, it was a seriously geeky conversation, but not just for art and philosophy fans, it was also great for music fans in general. The album comes out on October 27th 2023, and it is worth the wait, I play a track from it on this episode. website youtube spotify#omd #bauhausstairase #joydivision #orchestralmaneuversinthedark #newwave #80ssynth #andymccluskey

There aren't too many bands from the 70's and 80''s who're still producing compelling new music and not just replaying their biggest hits, but then Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark have always ignored the prevailing musical trends and ploughed their own furrow, which is why the Wirral band's blend of classic Synthpop and contemporary Electronic Dance Music is still wowing audiences. They're smack bang in the middle of a European tour and their last album The Punishment of Luxury was greeted with widespread critical acclaim, but Andy McCluskey says OMD's next release, Bauhaus Staircase, will be their last. No, really. He's our special guest in this month's Misadventures in Music podcast, with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord.Andy talks candidly about OMD's history, their musical influences and looks to the future with optimism as fans await the release of Bauhaus Staircase, their 14th studio album. A big thanks to Roy and Clare from the Podcafe in Liverpool for use of their recording studios. Listen up! Andy McCluskey is the frontman of Merseyside electronic legends Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark or OMD as they're often known. OMD was formed in 1978 out of the ashes of another band The ID, to which I have a little family connection, which you'll hear about in the episode. Their 1980 song Ebola Gay earned them widespread popularity throughout Europe, and their 1981 album “Architecture and Morality” which would sell over 4 million copies and spawn hit singles like “Souvenir” and “Maid of New Orleans”. Their follow-up album “Dazzle Ships” has just turned 40 years old, and it's history is somewhat complicated. The album embraced sound collage and shortwave radio recordings. It's an album about technology and the Cold War. It sold just a fraction of it's predecessor, but it seems to have enjoyed a reappraisal over the years. It was possibly just ahead of it's time, and maybe it subverted expectations too. We get into it in the interview. After OMD fell apart Andy masterminded 90's pop sensations Atomic Kitten, becoming a principal songwriter alongside former OMD band mate Stuart Kershaw. Andy's profession relationship with band dissolved around their second album, but it strikes me as a somewhat surprising career path, and I was interested to hear Andy's thoughts on that too. OMD reformed in 2006 and are a continuing concern. Their last album, the well-received “The Punishment of Luxury” came out in 2017, and Andy updates me with progress on the follow-up in our interview. Enjoy! The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, we feature Andy McCluskey from OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark). Andy has a story about a happy accident that, if it hadn't happened, we likely wouldn't have ever heard any of their classic songs like "If You Leave," "Electricity," "Enola Gay," and others. Many thanks to Andy for sharing his story and to additional guests Lindsay Reade and Carol Wilson for adding their memories. The appealingly danceable music of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, or OMD, as the trailblazing synth-driven electronic band came to be known, has delighted and charmed listeners for decades. They formed in the late 1970's, greatly inspired by Kraftwerk, and with influences ranging from CAN to Barry White. Their string of breakout hits stretched through the 1980's, like "Electricity," "Tesla Girls," & "So In Love," while their song, "If You Leave," written specifically for the John Hughes film, Pretty In Pink, was also a huge hit. The unusual OMD blend is one of melody and melancholia, created with keyboards, synths, sexy saxophone, and drums, while never straying too far from the dance club and pop radio. The band reformed in 2006, and with the 2017 release of their third album, The Punishment of Luxury, Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys - OMD - performed in-studio. (From the Archives, 2017.)

#58: 23.10.1980 – Top Of The GearThe latest episode of the podcast which asks: has anyone ever done that to someone else’s nostrils? Really?Neither willing to go out and pissed off with staying in, your favourite podcast about old episodes of Top Of The Pops elects to bury its head once more into the comforting bosom of the Eighventies, so come and join us, Pop-Crazed Youngsters – it’s a many-teated beast. This particular episode of The Pops sees our Thursday-evening treat still enclagged with the amorphous goo off the chrysalis it emerged from after the Musicians Union strike of the summer. They’ve had celebrity guests, a news section, two interviews with The Old Sailor and a wedding announcement from Dollar, but this week they’ve gone too far: they’ve done a tie-in with the 1980 Motor Show and filled the studio with cars that no-one can actually see and none of the audience gives the slightest fleck of a toss about. And oh dear; the combination of the smell of new car and the sight of bored-looking women in Talbot t-shirts standing about brings on predictable changes in our host, clad in a racing driver one-piece with the zip slung low: The Living Gnasher Badge… Musicwise, it’s cast-iron proof that 1980 really was the Ken of the Eighventies. Quo tap their noses at us as they lumber into the new decade. The Nolans get ready to rip through Japan like a four-headed Kay’s Catalogue Godzilla. Andy McCluskey gets given a bass in a doomed attempt to put him off his dancing. Poor Legs & Co get stared at by blokes in cars, like a Disco version of Never Go With Strangers. The Number One is more adult-orientated rammel. And DLT goes full-on PLP with Elkie Brooks. Rock Expert David Stubbs and Taylor Parkes join Al Needham for a leaf through the Exchange and Mart of Pop, swooping off on such tangents as how rubbish it’s going to be when we come out of lockdown, how unprepared your local market was for the onset of New Romantic, Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Erotic Meat Buffet, Eighties synth-duo intermarriage, and SCREW YOU, JOANNE GREENWOOD FROM CLASS 4A.Video Playlist | Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter | The Chart Music Wiki | Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the 1980's, OMD drove their electronica sound straight into the charts and the clubs. Classics like Electricity and Enola Gay remain on the goto playlists for legions of fans. The band was founded by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys in Liverpool, England, in 1978. I had the pleasure of touring with OMD in 2019, on my last tour mixing The B-52's. Plug in for my blether with Andy McCluskey.

We take a trip down memory lane as we chat with this week's guest, Andy McCluskey.Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) have been around since the 70's when two school friends decided they'd give music a go. With no huge aspirations to be a musician, one of the band's founding members, Andy McCluskey, recalls tales of how a lot of the band's fate happened by chance.Tony had the Human League on Granada Reports – he used to put bands on. And we thought, “sod it, we've met him. Let's be cheeky and send a cassette, see if we can get on telly”. I thought this was like a myth until two years ago, I actually met Tony Wilson's wife, Lindsay, and she confirmed that this myth was in fact truth. Apparently she got in the car with him and said, “alright love, what's this bag of cassettes?” and he went, “oh, it's the rejects, it's just all the crap, people wanting us to release a record, it's all the rubbish”. So she reached into the bag pulled out a cassette and she went “Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, that's a weird name, let's put it on”, and he went, “oh no, they played the club last week, they're rubbish love, two hairy scousers doing electric music”, and she said “well let's play it anyway”, and she played it and went, “that's a hit”, so apparently Tony Wilson lent over patted Lindsay on the thigh very patronising and went, “alright love, just for you I'll sign them”, and that's how you get a record deal [laughter] fished out of the reject bag by the wife.Speaking openly about the highs and lows of being in a band, the conversation moves onto more recent years of Andy's career where he has spent more time as a music producer and songwriter for other artists. Andy's involvement in establishing girl group, Atomic Kitten was instrumental to their success as he reveals why his career went down this route.Available to download on now, The Lonely Arts Club can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and many more podcasting platforms. All episodes are recorded following social distance guidelines.

Kari connects Andy to his grandmother (while discovering for the first time he played bass on stage at a concert she saw), as he talks about rediscovering the creative power of boredom during this moment in the world, all about "So in Love," who the "Tesla Girls" are, the dichotomy of joyously dancing to "Enola Gay," thoughts of Joan of Arc, Edward Hopper and "Night Cafe," that important moment his life path intersected with Paul Humphreys, thinking about time now, writing songs that's a conversation with yourself and knowing when it resonates in your soul, songs that are the soundtrack of life's journey and that are engrained in our hearts and souls, the moment in his life when "If You Leave" happened, what he does when he wants to ground and unplug from this digital era.
Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys of OMD sit down in London to discuss their career anthology box set Souvenir and the writing process behind their success. Knowing from a young age that she was destined for fame, Kerry Katona's life has been predictably unpredictable. With stability absent from the Warrington natives foster home hopping childhood, Katona's need to grow up quickly had both its pros and cons. This freedom that allowed her to be making £500 a night as a teenage lap dancer also led to a reliance on recreational drugs that lingered for years, but her fearless ambition to be self sufficient and escape soon paid off. Katona was noticed by Andy McCluskey and soon cast as an original member of the pop girl group, Atomic Kitten, in 1998.The band's mainstream success would turn the future Queen of the Jungle's life upside down and she soon began to realise that the rise to fame exceeded the reality. Numerous failed marriages, daily appearances in the intrusive British tabloids, countless controversies both true and false and a dormant music career began to be what the by now "reality star" became associated with in the decade that followed, compounded by the fact that she was struggling with bipolar in an era that saw a lack of education surround the topic of mental health. With Katona though, the fight is never over. Having seen levels of betrayal that seem unimaginable, the 'Whole Again' singer had run out of shoulders to lean on. The constant pillar however, was her children. Repeatedly falling short in her quest for identity, the answer was closer than Katona ever thought. Kerry Katona is a Mother. In episode 48 of The Michael Anthony Show, Katona holds nothing back as she honestly opens up on the good, bad and utterly ridiculous aspects of her thirty eight year old life. Still not without her occasional bump in the road, Kerry Katona remains a figure of resentment, adoration and intrigue to the general public. As opposed to reading about her life though clickbait/sensationalist headlines, we wanted to hear Kerry tell us about Kerry. It didn't disappoint.Episode available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and SoundCloud.Follow and Listen through the links in the bio of @themichaelanthonyshow.Support the show (https://open.spotify.com/show/0sP68DtD7qCl4Rs2wGKJD4)

This is one of those episodes of Riverdale where we start to wonder if we're really setting ourselves up to start throwing things at the television. Sure, Betty comes up with a half-decent plan to catch the Gargoyle King, and Mary Andrews comes to rescue her son from what should have been certain death. But these writers are notoriously lazy, and they proved it by some of the ridiculous choices in this episode, and next week's preview. There's one thing for sure, though - whoever the DJ is at Riverdale High's junior prom, we want them to drop some exquisite 80's synthpop gems at our next gathering. Reap The Wild Wind (Extended Version) - Ultravox Notes and other random things: Starting off this podcast is a song that may not be familiar to non-Depeche Mode fans - or about four of you. The phrase itself is notable for its connection to Pearl Harbor. The word "tora" literally means tiger in Japanese, though in a WWII context it is radio code for "totsugeki raigeki", meaning lightning attack. In a Depeche Mode, context, however, the song is also notable as it is one of only two Martin Gore-penned songs appearing on the band's debut: Speak & Spell. (the other was the instrumental track, Big Muff). As most of you probably know, Vince Clarke, who later went on to form Yaz and Erasure, was an original member of DM and its primary songwriter before leaving the group shortly after the release of their first record. Gore would take over songwriting duties after that. Tora! Tora! Tora!, while not one of the most well-known or provocative songs in the DM catalog, provides a tantalizing, albeit brief, glimpse into the mind of Martin Gore and all that was to come. As a side note, a live version of Tora! Tora! Tora! appears on the 12" version of the song "Get The Balance Right". It was the first live track to appear on any DM single. A limited edition version of GTBR contained several more live tracks, making it the first DM single to appear in a limited edition format. Speaking of Vince Clarke and Erasure, the second song in this 'cast, "Brother & Sister" is, in my humble opinion the best track on the band's Wild! album, which dropped in 1989, and perhaps one of their best tracks, period. Considered one of the stronger Erasure albums from stem to stern by many fans, Wild! is enigmatic in the sense that, for whatever reason, it didn't strike a chord with American audiences. Coming immediately on the heels of The Innocents from only a year earlier, an album which contained the massive hits "Chains Of Love" and "A Little Respect" one would think that the next album would have more appeal stateside. Yet, not even great songs like "Drama!, "Star" or "Blue Savannah", (#4, #11, #3 respectively in the UK) sniffed the American singles charts. The band wouldn't see the American charts again until the release of "Chorus" in 1991. On another side note, it was around that time that I got to meet Andy Bell. It was at a hotel bar in downtown Fort Worth, Texas after a concert. While I didn't attend the concert, I had a friend who worked at the hotel tip me off that Andy would be in the bar area sometime after the show. Three other friends and I piled into our car and headed for the hotel. When we arrived, there was a rather large throng of people waiting outside, hoping to get in to catch a glimpse of the band. We showed up well after the fact, walked right in the front entrance and took a seat at a table in the bar area. Nobody even inquired whether or not we had a room at the hotel (we didn't). About 15-20 minutes later, Andy and a couple members of his entourage took a seat at a table near us. We mumbled among ourselves, starstruck as ever. It took about another 15 minutes for us to get enough courage to walk over and ask for an autograph. As we were the only other people in the bar, he kindly obliged. We didn't linger or ask a bunch of questions. We simply said how much we loved Erasure's music and thanked him for the autograph. Then we returned to our table. He appeared exhausted from the show and I think he truly appreciated the fact we didn't press the issue. While many stateside think of Re-Flex as a one-hit wonder thanks to their international smash, "The Politics Of Dancing", the fact is the band had five other singles chart in various countries around the world, including the track "Hurt", which appears here. Reaching #82 in the US back in 1983, the song is largely forgotten or overlooked by all but die-hard fans at this point in time, but it's a fantastic pop gem by any standard and deserves to be heard. Re-Flex were formed in the early 1980s by musicians Baxter on vocals and guitar and Paul Fishman on keyboards and backing vocals, and included Francois Craig on bass, and two successive drummers, Phil Gould and Mark King, both of Level 42 fame. Following King's exit, Roland Vaughn Kerridge took over on drums and later, after Craig’s departure, Thomas Dolby introduced ex-Gloria Mundi bass player Nigel Ross-Scott to the band, thus completing Re-Flex's final and perhaps best-known line-up. Though the group stopped working together in 1987, they have never officially split up. If you are a fan, it might interest you to know that in 2010, Re-Flex band members released a 6 CD box set entitled 'Re-Fuse'. The set includes a re-mastered version of their debut album, The Politics of Dancing, and five CDs of other previously unreleased material. One of those five discs is their sophomore effort called Humanication which, somewhat ironically, was shelved by EMI before its release as it was deemed ... wait for it ... too political. And speaking of pop perfection, OMD's "Tesla Girls" would have to qualify. Though it's one of the definitive club tracks in the band's catalog, Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys found it exceptionally difficult to come up with a version that they knew to be "right". At the time, the band's confidence had bottomed-out after the release of their fourth album, Dazzle Ships, and the group struggled to produce new music they felt was up to their lofty standards. Inspired by Yugoslavian-born scientist Nikola Tesla, who developed the alternating current, and armed with a title suggested to the group by musician Martha Ladly, "Tesla Girls" went through endless revisions and multiple adaptations during umpteen recording sessions for their fifth album, Junk Culture. Even after creating what would become the album version of the song, McCluskey recorded two new versions and even attempted to remix the original studio recording before admitting defeat and signing off on the version we've all come to love ... except for "Kids In America" singer Kim Wilde, who called the tune "inane and monotonous". Still, in 1984 the track reached #21 in the UK and has become a classic. By the way, the "No, No, No" vocal sample was done by Maureen Humphreys, Paul's wife at the time. Last, but never least, you may be wondering about the title 5-8-6 by New Order. The song was originally conceived out of Factory Records' head, Tony Wilson, requesting "twenty minutes of pap" from the band. From that directive was borne a 23-minute instrumental titled "Video 5-8-6". The song contained many elements that would surface in various songs on NO's debut album, Power, Corruption and Lies, including their best-selling club hit, "Blue Monday". The song would eventually be distilled down to the vocal version of the song most fans are familiar with. Bassist Peter Hook has stated that the title comes from the bar structure found in the track "Ecstasy". The track went on to chart at #86 on the British Singles Chart and #19 on the British Indie Chart. It also went on to become a classic among classics in the New Order catalog. Welp, another episode in the books. I'll be back with another soon. Thanks for listening!
