You can read it though, just a summary of the banger of a video you're watching. The Horus Heresy is over. Horus is dust. The Emperor is entombed. Sanguinius is super dead. And the galaxy? A complete mess. The Age of Rebirth marks the dawn of the Imperium as we know it—where the Emperor's grand dream dies and, arguably, Chaos wins. Today, we're diving into what happened next, Primarch by Primarch. Some vanished into legend, some forged new empires, and some... well, let's just say daddy issues hit harder when you're a genetically engineered demigod. From Lion El'Jonson's betrayal at Caliban to Rogal Dorn's self-destructive guilt, from the rise of Abaddon and the Black Legion to Corax's terrifying new form, we're covering it all. https://forums.eveonline.com/t/rots-mijnwerker-for-csm-19-your-0-0-non-bloc-and-pi-change-candidate/463110 Hello team, I am Rots Mijnwerker Leader of Out of the Blue. My history in Eve Online has always been about creating content, playing in a community, and growing with the game. My time in EVE truly started in 2005 at the age of 13, playing religiously throughout middle and highschool then well into college. Now after hitting my 30s, it's a lot easier to look back on the ebb and flow of what EVE has been. I've had the pleasure of playing with some great people and fighting others equally as great. I have been encouraged by the EVE community and truly embraced the community building aspect of what the game allows us to collaborate around. I am a very staunch PVPer and sprung headfirst into leadership and FC'ing, today providing almost nightly content for anyone who wants to go forth and shoot. Over the years I have been in many alliances. In some I was the line member or diplomat, in others I was the Head FC, or i lead my own. I have been a part of the following alliances doing my thing in some form or capacity. * Raiden * IEGEX * Red Legion. * Why So Seri0us * Nulli Secunda. * Black Legion. * Insidious. * The Blood Covenant * Darkspawn. * DARKNESS. * VINDICTIVE * FREIGHT TRAIN DIPLOMACY * WE FORM VOLTA * Out of the Blue. * WE FORM BLOB For a period, I took a hiatus and stepped away from the game as I was not happy with where CCP was investing its resources and I had lost interest. In the day and age of COVID 19 – the community was sorely missed, and loneliness set in. Something about being furloughed from the company I build theatrical scenery for and having very little people to talk to while in lock down, feeling unable to express myself in my normal artistic way. That kind of set the tone for why EVE online and the people who play it are important to me. I messaged old friends, and we reformed under the old banners, with all the old history and all the experiences we've had. Today I have an outstanding rapport with MANY groups, alliances, their leaders, and members. My areas of Expertise Content Generation (Lowsec, Nullsec and KSpace) New Player Support Fleet Commanding Fleet Concept Building Alliance Logistics Alliance Management Community Building Risk vs Reward Structure Mechanics Sov Mechanics Eve Story Telling Marketing Honest Feedback Why am i applying for CSM candidacy? The overarching goal for me in CSM 19 would be the promotion of EVE online player base growth. I am passionate about new alliances and i feel having many groups across all walks of space promotes a healthy EVE. I want to be apart of ensuring the player base feels they are getting their time's worth by downloading eve online. The reduction of space work for smaller groups making it easier for content creators to appear and become established is still also a key goal for me since last year's run for CSM 18. I have put a lot of years into the game and feel i would be a good advocate for the community that plays this game, if either by being a conduit or sharer of ideas... https://forums.eveonline.com/t/creatnos-for-csm19/462978 Hello Gamers, I am Creatnos, a once youthful kid saddened by the loss of his cormorant, now a slightly more mature kid saddened by the loss of skyhook raiding. I am running for CSM for the first time. For my Eve career I have mostly stayed out of the spotlight, so many of you probably do not know me by name, but chances are, someone you know, knows me. I started playing this game back in 2010 right around the time I was starting high school so i pretty much grew up with this game. I started off in Hisec, enjoying the day to day missioning, fighting off the mean wardeccers, and occasionally peeking into lowsec to see what real pvp was all about. Over a decade has passed and I have experienced pretty much everything this game has to offer. I participated in the Great Wars, like being a line member in a drake in DBRB fleets. Bombed armor bs fleets of old with Wrik Hoover and Cloak Squad in the south. Fought the world with Elo in Black Legion and the fcs of old in Pandemic Legion. Roamed wormhole space with Noobman and HK. Founded NSH (the original GW version). Ran faction warfare complexes and spearfished individual ships out of entire fleets. I've spent more hours than I can count practicing for Alliance Tournaments and hunting supers moving through lowsec and nullsec. The last couple of months I have enjoyed all that skyhook raiding had to offer, killing the occasional traveling super and more recently am involved in a small war that has broken out in lowsec. The reason I am running for CSM is in hopes of keeping the flame going that keeps us wanting to play this game. I have made many friends in the years I have played this game that I have known for almost 15 years and still make new friends to this day. My focus on CSM would be improvements related to PvP for those primarily in lowsec and their interactions with nullsec, as well as with nullsec as on its own. Some of the things I am interested in below. Skyhook Raiding - This is a huge content driver. Admittedly the stealing was too easy, but the proposed changes are bad. Very bad. I hope to help bring some parity to this mechanic where both the aggressor and defender want to interact with it. Equinox changes as a whole started out looking promising, but have been on a gradual decline ever since the first patch. Metenox Moon Drills - This is another big content driver, and fighting over them day in and out for the last month I have a pretty good feeling on the hp amounts that attackers and defenders have to deal with. I think some healthy changes can be made that would put these in a better state. Also I have had some shower thoughts about limiting drills to only harvesting R8 and higher. Force Projection - Eve has become significantly smaller since I started playing, and back in the day we were able to take 50 supers and go north to south in 10 minutes. Between uni wormholes, ansiblexes, zarzakh (prior to recent events), maneuvering the universe became too easy. At least in the past, the wormhole highway required people to put some effort into scanning to get around places. Fozziesov - I personally dislike ever going away from SBUs to the way sov wanding works now. I would like to see some change because the state it is in now isn't particularly fun. Capital/Supercapital Ship Changes - I think there is a lot of work that can be done to better the state of all capitals. Carrier changes were definitely a good start. I would like to see a world where people are at least somewhat interested in using their supers outside of beacons, but cost and effectiveness prevents that. Lancers being used almost exclusively for killing jump freighters also seems like a void that can be filled. Carrier fighters could use some refinement. Contact and Bookmark QOL changes - Allow for more contacts slots (currently 1024) for the purpose of NPSI fleets. Also increase shared bookmark folders from 3 to 5 and maybe add some more bookmark slots to those folders. Pochven - I personally dislike pochven in its entirety, but I especially would like to see some of the isk faucet cut down. I don't have immediate solutions for all these topics, nor do I expect to please everyone, but what I can say is that I am very good at talking to people and I regularly interact with people from all across our community. I want to hear what people's opinions are about all aspects of the game and I hope to be as transparent as possible both with you all and with CCP in hopes of bettering this game we spend too much time playing. I have a ton of experience in this game and hopefully that history can better our future. Chris talks with labor historian Dana Frank; her new book is What Can We Learn From the Great Depression? Stories of Ordinary People and Collective Action in Hard Times. The book takes a new look at working-class activism during the 1930s from the perspective of our own time, examining mutual aid, eviction protests, the expulsion of a million Mexicans, a sit-down strike by African American women working as wet-nurses, and a white supremacist fascist organization in Ohio known as the Black Legion. Dana will be in conversation with Bill Fletcher Jr. this Tuesday, October 7, at the K Street Busboys and Poets; click here for details. On this week's Labor History in Two: the year was 1918. This consisted of systems that had previously served as Indomitus Crusade supply hubs which were quickly fortified in their own right. However, the stalemate would soon be broken, must to the shock of both sides. Abaddon's trusted lieutenant Haarken Worldclaimer arrived with a Black Legion army.Lord Admiral Prisca's force soon arrived at the Grakiliod Narrow, a location that Haarken's fleet could not bypass. Despite heavy losses, Prisca's fleet maintained enough momentum to break through Worldclaimer's formation and burst through it on the other side. As the ships broke through, they peeled off left and right, unleashing waves of attack craft as they attacked the rear of the Chaos fleet as it was changing position. After many hours of fighting, Haarken had reorganized his fleet in a jaw-like formation ready to close on the Imperials. With his final order, hundreds of ships bore down on the Imperial armada. The exhausted loyalist Space Marines onboard stood little chance and were overwhelmed. Despite a brave final stand, the Imperial fleet was eventually annihilated.Only a fraction of the Imperial fleet survived the battle to limp back to the Sanctus Wall. Prisca herself was thought dead, and her plan had achieved questionable results. The Imperial commanders at the Sanctus Wall were disturbed by reports of the scale of the incoming Chaos armada. Meanwhile, the Inquisition continued to battle cults and hidden agents of Chaos within the worlds of the Sanctus Wall itself. Indeed, Sangua Terra, linchpin of the Sanctus Wall, is currently under mass invasion by Daemons.Support the Show.

The title is a joke.....Probably.https://www.patreon.com/isyanderandkoda You already know how to please the Machine Gods at this point so thank you so much. And make your voices heard for which faction you would like to see next! -Isyander The Adeptus Custodes, a central faction in the Warhammer 40K universe, embody the ultimate guardians of the Emperor of Mankind. As the Emperor's personal bodyguards, they are unparalleled warriors, each a masterpiece of genetic engineering. Their history is deeply intertwined with the Imperium's, being involved in crucial events and conflicts throughout the galaxy.Historically, the Adeptus Custodes were originally ten thousand strong, but their numbers dwindled during the War Within the Webway. By the 41st Millennium, they restored their ranks to their original strength. They are a department of the Adeptus Terra, answerable only to the Emperor and their leaders, with the Captain-General being their chief custodian. Their ranks and titles reflect a hierarchy of respect and experience, with positions such as Shield-Captains and Tribunes holding significance. The Adeptus Custodes have engaged in numerous battles and campaigns, including the Indomitus Crusade, the Defense of Vostagraad, and the Witching Wars. Their recent activities, as noted during the Era Indomitus, involve battles against formidable enemies like the Hexarchy and the Black Legion. They are known for their participation in various crusades and wars, demonstrating their unyielding commitment to the Imperium's defense. The faction's equipment and armory are as distinctive as their warriors. Their arsenal includes advanced armors like the Allarus Terminator and Custodian Armor, various shields, and unique weaponry. They deploy formidable walkers like the Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought and vehicles such as the Caladius and Dawneagle Pattern Jetbike. Their aircraft arsenal includes the Orion Gunship and Ares Gunship, among others. They also possess relics that symbolize their heritage and prowess. The Adeptus Custodes are divided into various subdivisions and castes, such as the Hykanatoi, Sentinel Guard, and the elite Companions who serve as the Emperor's personal bodyguard. These subdivisions reflect their diverse roles and specializations within the faction.Regarding their feelings towards the Primarchs, the Adeptus Custodes view them with a mixture of respect and wariness, recognizing their power and importance to the Imperium while being cautious of their potential for betrayal or harm, as seen during the Horus Heresy.TIMESTAMPS —— 0:00:00 Silly Intro0:00:18 The actual Intro0:01:06 The Custodes0:05:24 How rare are the Custodes0:09:03 The Emperor's Closest Friends0:15:15 How are the Custodes faring Today0:18:11 What makes the Custodes special0:32:05 How they Shore up their own Weaknesses0:34:21 How do the Custodes feel about the modern Imperium0:45:57 The Aquilan Shield0:50:40 The Custodes' "Default Dans"0:51:22 The Eyes of the Emperor0:59:19 Setting their Power in Perspective1:01:50 Closing Thoughts—————————— TAGSAdeptus Custodes, Warhammer 40K, Emperor of Mankind, Imperium, Captain-General, Shield-Captains, Tribunes, Indomitus Crusade, Defense of Vostagraad, Witching Wars, Hexarchy, Black Legion, Allarus Terminator Armor, Custodian Armor, Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought, Caladius, Dawneagle Jetbike, Orion Gunship, Ares Gunship, Hykanatoi, Sentinel Guard, Companions, Primarchs, Horus Heresy.————————————Opinions expressed in this video are solely those of Isyander & Koda and in no way reflect the views or opinions of Games Workshop Ltd.Support the show

The TENE film club meets again to take on the dreaded Black Legion! The boys watch two films, Legion of Terror (1936) and Black Legion (1937) starring Humphrey Bogart, as well as two radio plays, an episode of True Detective Mysteries (1937) and another entitled "The White Legion" (1938) on the original superhero serial, The Shadow. They compare these representations to the actual white supremacist terrorists and examine how each piece of media reflects the political culture of interwar America in its own way. In 1937, Warner Brothers released a film attacking the rise of hate groups in America that were terrorizing immigrants and minorities. Humphrey Bogart stars in this extraordinary movie. After the Second World War, a lot of what had been happening in the U.S. before the war was swept under the rug and forgotten. Nazism and fascism were seen as things that happened in Germany and Italy, an evil that caused the rest of the world to unite in order to defeat it. But the fact is, these political movements had supporters in just about every country in Europe, and the United States. Antisemitism was pretty mainstream, and the rhetoric from such prominent men as Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford was in line with what Hitler was saying. The color line was absolutely in force as well—black Americans were segregated off from white society in every important respect. But for the most part, the movies ignored all that, presenting a world of adventure, comedy, dancing, music, and escapism to audiences during the Depression. Political topics were discouraged, both by the powerful forces in American society and the studios themselves, that didn't want to disturb people, because that could potentially drive them away from movies, thus not spending the money in theaters that kept Hollywood going. Among the studios, however, Warner Brothers was something of an exception. Their stories were aimed more at working people in the cities, and they produced a lot of social problem pictures such as Dead End and I Was a Prisoner on a Chain Gang. One of the most unusual of such films, released in 1937 and directed by Archie Mayo, was called Black Legion. Humphrey Bogart plays a factory worker named Frank Taylor, happily married with kids, who is expecting and looking forward to a promotion, when he can provide better support for his family. But to his shock and surprise, he gets passed over for this promotion by someone with a Polish sounding name, an immigrant who has worked hard and stayed up nights learning the business. While he simmers with resentment, a co-worker tells him about a secret vigilante group called The Black Legion, that commits violent acts against foreigners and immigrants who they say are stealing American jobs. If you join them, he is told, you must pledge total secrecy and loyalty to the Legion. Frank agrees to join, and when the Legion meets we see that they wear hoods and practice cult-like loyalty ceremonies. They get rid of Frank's rival and thanks to them, he gets the promotion. But the Legion's demands on his loyalty end up putting a strain on his relationship with his wife and best friend. If you're expecting a simplistic happy outcome here, the film presents a bracing and uncomfortable reality instead. Bogart hadn't yet become the big star he would be in the ‘40s. He was mostly doing supporting roles, often as villains. Although he's kind of a villain here too, he plays the main character, and the drama consists in his inner struggle between his decent impulses and the hatred against other groups that gradually takes over his mind and heart. It's a very effective performance. The story, by Robert Lord, was inspired by an actual anti-immigrant group in Michigan. But there are pointed similarities to the Ku Klux Klan as well. The Klan had become a powerful and widely accepted group in America, and it actually sued Warner Brothers because the movie used a Klan symbol in one of the scenes, but a judge threw out their case. There's no mention of Jews or Blacks in the film—there were things you just couldn't say in those days and be accepted in the mainstream of the entertainment industry. But the implications are clear, and watching this now is kind of scary because of the relevanc

Those that walk the highest path, have the furthest to fall. This is true of the XVIth Legion, whose fate was sealed on the day that Horus was named Warmaster. Though their reputation and combat record far exceeded any other Legion during the Great Crusade, it was their pride and hubris that made them perfect targets for the corruption of Chaos. Now they blaze a path of destruction across the galaxy, forged with fire and death. Their plans are laid, their will is set. They are the Black Legion, and their Gods will have their due. Join us as we dissect the Black Legion in all it's foul glory. Joining us on this episode for the last time, is Christian.
When we did our other podcast, the movie Black Legion had been on TCM the week before. I asked Tom if he had seen it and hadn't. I asked if he would watch it and discuss, and he watched, and we discussed. It's based on a true story and there really was a Black Legion. This film is unfortunately forever topical. Strike fear in people and keep it up and hence you get groups like this. I can bet they had this since cavemen times. Differing Area's cave peeps spoke different grunts, their feet were bigger, who knows. There's aways someone different and people fearing them. It's a fascinating watch. Bogart is very good and so adorably young as a regular Joe being convinced the foreigners, them, they, are coming for his job, his life style and the American way. He does a great job. He won an award as did the film. Dick Foran was very good and a cutie pie. Ann Sheridan was good also in one of her first films, before she became The Oooomph girl. They whole cast was a winner. It's a good watch, but it definitely is not Singing In The Rain. On a lighter note we discuss Dick's singing cowboy career. Also, the fight to get Dick singing out on the trails before Gene Autry. Gene beat him to it. I was loving Dick's American Cowboy corral of choral singers. He had a whole posse of back up singers. I hope the bad guys didn't hear. ; ) It's interesting hearing what an actors son has to say about a movie his dad was in that he just discovered. Tom is a wonderful guest and you will enjoy him as much as I do. He is welcome anytime. Thanks a zillion Tom. You are fab!! Baby Wyatt is majorly gorgeous. Mostly, thanks to the audience. In the 1920s and 30s, an ultra-violent sect of the KKK called the Black Legion ran rampant in the Midwest. When a proud black man and activist moved his family to Lansing, Michigan to escape death threats from white supremacists, he had no idea he was walking into a snake pit. The violence that ensued destroyed a family and shaped the life of a man who went on to shake the world.

In a previous episode we discussed the idea of walk ins and the research conducted by Ruth Montgomery on the phenomenon. In this episode we discuss this episode further and examine additional research conducted by Montgomery on how to identify walk ins and what we can learn from them. You may know a walk-in. You may even be one. They are high-minded entities permitted to take over the bodies of human beings who wish to depart this life. Their mission is to lead us into an astonishing new age. They are walk-ins, and there are tens of thousands of them on this planet.Walk-in's are spirits , living in the other worlds ( say... the heavens...) who get permission and opportunity to descend into (and take over) the bodies of humans, who do not want to be in this world anymore, because their lives are too difficult... for instance....without them going so far as to commit suicide... but who do willingly leave their bodies, so that they themselves can enter the spirit world .Ruth Montgomery has led an interesting life. In 1936, as a young reporter for the Detroit Times, she posed as a member of a racist group called the "Black Legion" to solve a murder that had baffled the police. Montgomery not only solved the murder but uncovered the fact that Detroit's chief of police was a secret member of the organization. Later she was the first woman journalist to be featured on the popular NBC radio show "The Big Story." But her biggest "Big Story" lay ahead."If you have not already met a Walk-in," begins Montgomery in the foreword, "you soon will. They are everywhere . . ." The Walk-ins are here, she explains, to help the world prepare for a shift upon its axis that will take place at the close of this century, possibly after a devastating war. This thought, for those of you who have not read "Strangers Among Us," Montgomery's first book on Walk-ins, may be quite a lot to swallow. But in fairness to Montgomery, it does not do to read her books out of sequence. As she evolves, so do her books, gaining weight in minds that already have been prepared by Montgomery to accept what she might have rejected herself. There is, for instance, the matter of her "Guides," or discarnate spirits, who have been aiding Montgomery rather significantly in her writing since 1960 by guiding her fingers (after a period of meditation when she is in the alpha state) across the typewriter. Montgomery's Guides, she explains are "souls, like ourselves, who have lived innumerable earth lives but are currently in the spirit plane, as you and I will be when we eventually pass through the door called death."The Guides' purpose is to "awake us earthlings" to the realities of the world beyond our five senses, and one cannot read Montgomery's psychic books without accepting the Guides as an empirically solid fact in her life. This reader has no problem with them. They seem to make good sense most of the time and sometimes they are quite funny. In "Strangers Among Us" Montgomery asked her Guides if she was a Walk-in. ". . . my unseen pen pals are not given to flattery. 'No, you are not a Walk-in,' they bluntly replied . . . 'But one day you may decide to make way for a Walk-in. Until then, do that which you came into this earth to do. We'll help.""Threshold to Tomorrow" is divided into life stories of living Walk-ins, currently occupying the bodies of human beings, most of whom suffered a traumatic or near-death experience that caused them to give up on life. They are starting New Age communes, engaged in scientific research, devoting their lives to philanthropy or still searching for their mission. But all of them are radically different people from what they were before they were "replaced" by the souls that currently motivate their activities. Regrettably, a good many of them were so unfamiliar to their spouses that they wound up getting divorced as a result. China's first animated feature film, Humphrey Bogart as a drunk klansman and Robert Hardy with barely concealed incestuous urges. It can only mean one thing... another episode of Midnight Video has entered the iSphere.Princess Iron Fan is China's first major commercial contribution to the world of animated feature films and derives from the moralistic tales found within the great Chinese tome; Journey To The West.Humphrey Bogart plays a disillusioned blue collar worker in Black Legion who becomes a slave to the bottle and a rather dubious 'club' who model themselves on the Ku Klux Klan. And Hammer studios' Demons Of The Mind sees Robert Hardy turned up to 11 as the pater familias of an aristocratic family with dark secrets.

Episode 165 of The Independent Characters is a super-sized, nearly four hour episode! The first thing you need to know though, is that this episode is being released in ADVANCE of Episode 164 as a result of a PR announcement tied to that episode which was delayed. This forced us to delay the release of 164, so we hurried up and released 165 as soon as we could. This episode is our Show of Force covering the Grey Knights! (I know. It's confusing.) To help us through this episode, we have brought on two guys who are incredibly passionate about the Grey Knights. Aaron (also known as Magneto) and Adan. I want to thank them very much for joining us on short notice so we could get this episode out to you guys and not make you wait even longer for Episode 164. Our Show of Force episodes are some of our most positively reviewed content - but just when you think it cannot get any better we top it by bringing on Aaron Dembski-Bowden and Geoff Hummel to complete our Forbidden Lore segment on Black Legion. Malcolm X who was born in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19th 1925 from his mother Louise Norton Little and his father Earl Little. He was one of 8 children and grew up in a very proactive household. His father, Earl who was a baptist minister was very outspoken and was a large supporter of the Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Being outspoken came with its consequences, his father would receive death threats from a white supremacist organization Black Legion. They were forced to move to avoid the threats but less than a year later their house was burned, and two years later he was found dead. It was presumed an accident and after his death his mother became insane and had to go to a mental institution in which all the kids went to foster care. As Malcolm grew up he bounced from home to home and eventually in 1946 he was arrested for burglary. During his time in prison he reflected on his life and his brother would visit him, he introduced him to Nation of Islam. He then took very close following of the leader Elijah Muhammad, and when he got out he decided to get involved. He then changed his name from Malcolm Little to Malcolm X to get rid of his slave name. Most importantly he became the spokesperson for the NOI because he was very intelligent and articulate. He used television, radio and newspapers to spread his beliefs and ideas with the world. The NOI grew from 500 to 30,000 followers in 10 years. Malcolm X was very controversial and his statements brought outrage from the public. He told his followers to break away from racism “by any means necessary” which means violence is acceptable. Separate from his rival Martin Luther King who was anti-aggression, Malcolm often scolded MLK for being friends with the white man. He said “You don’t have a peaceful revolution” and “You don’t have a turn the cheek revolution. There’s no such thing as a nonviolent revolution”. These words had an effect on the people of America due to his pro-violence views. These statements won him large amounts of followers but also brought many critics. One of the critics was MLK himself saying “I feel that Malcolm has done himself and our people a great disservice.” showing the feelings he has for Malcolm’s opinions. In 1963 Malcolm was betrayed by his most coveted friend Elijah Muhammad. He had followed Muhammad’s teachings for many year only to find out that Elijah himself was breaking some of the most important rules of his religion. He was having affairs with numerous women and it caused a huge outbreak for Malcolm to handle. He then separated himself from NOI and moved on to start his own organization. The death of Malcolm X was monumental for the civil rights movement. He was killed in 1965 at the Audobon ballroom in Manhattan. He was shot 15 times at point blank range by members of the NOI. This allowed Martin Luther King to take Malcolm’s followers and move forward with the civil rights movement. Without Malcolm X the civil rights movement would have been drastically different.

Martin talks to author Tom Stanton about Terror in the City of Champions: Murder, Baseball, and the Secret Society that Shocked Depression-era Detroit. Detroit, mid-1930s: In a city abuzz over its unrivaled sports success, gun-loving baseball fan Dayton Dean became ensnared in the nefarious and deadly Black Legion. The secretive, Klan-like group was executing a wicked plan of terror, murdering enemies, flogging associates, and contemplating armed rebellion. The Legion boasted tens of thousands of members across the Midwest, among them politicians and prominent citizens—even, possibly, a beloved athlete. A New York Times Bestseller, Terror in the City of Champions opens with the arrival of Mickey Cochrane, a fiery baseball star who roused the Great Depression’s hardest-hit city by leading the Tigers to the 1934 pennant. A year later he guided the team to its first championship. Within seven months the Lions and Red Wings follow in football and hockey—all while Joe Louis chased boxing’s heavyweight crown. Amidst such glory, the Legion’s dreadful toll grew unchecked: staged “suicides,” bodies dumped along roadsides, high-profile assassination plots. Talkative Dayton Dean’s involvement would deepen as heroic Mickey’s Cochrane’s reputation would rise. But the ballplayer had his own demons, including a close friendship with Harry Bennett, Henry Ford’s brutal union buster. Award-winning author Tom Stanton weaves a stunning tale of history, crime, and sports. Richly portraying 1930s America, Terror in the City of Champions features a pageant of colorful figures: iconic athletes, sanctimonious criminals, scheming industrial titans, a bigoted radio priest, a love-smitten celebrity couple, J. Edgar Hoover, and two future presidents, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. It is a rollicking true story set at the confluence of hard luck, hope, victory, and violence. The interview was recorded on August 3, 2016
As manager Mickey Cochrane and his Tigers thrilled Detroit by day, a secret KKK-like gang called the Black Legion terrorized the city at night.
“The Freedom of Information Act is a critical and sometimes underappreciated tool that allows all of us access to the records of our government. It was through the act that I obtained copies of more than nine hundred pages of FBI documents related to the Black Legion. These proved vital.” -Tom Stanton In the mid-1930s, Detroit reigned as the City of Champions. Within a six-month span, the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings won a World Series, NFL title, and Stanley Cup -- a major-sports trifecta achieved by no other American city before or since -- and it happened as undefeated local boxer Joe Louis was becoming a national sensation. As the successes mounted, the national media made heroes of the city’s sports stars, and Detroit grew almost delirious, the string of victories providing a sweet diversion from the Great Depression. But beneath the jubilance, a nefarious plague was spreading unchecked. A wave of mysterious crimes had police baffled: bodies dumped along roadsides, suspicious suicides, bombings of homes and halls, flogging victims who refused to speak, assassination plots. All were the work of the Black Legion, a secret terrorist organization that flourished in Detroit until the summer of 1936. On a summer's evening in 2016 New York, award-winning author Tom Stanton took a teeming Clubhouse through a stunning tale of history, crime, and baseball in 1930s America. Listen in...

In this issue, Matthew and Stephen sit down to discuss/argue the finer points of pulp heroes joining forces to fight evil in Masks #2 from Dynamite Entertainment. Powerful criminals and crooked politicians have taken over New York, and instituted a fascist police state. With the law bent to their own purposes, the so- called “Justice Party” and their army of Black Legion troopers imprison, extort, and execute any citizens who stand in their way. Only vigilantes like the Shadow, Green Hornet, and the Spider have any hope of standing against them, but instead of operating outside the law as they have always done, these masked heroes must now oppose the law in their fight for justice. But they will not be fighting alone, as more men and women don masks and emerge from the shadows to stand alongside them. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother, Louis Norton Little, was a homemaker occupied with the family's eight children. His father, Earl Little, was an outspoken Baptist minister and avid supporter of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Earl's civil rights activism prompted death threats from the white supremacist organization Black Legion, forcing the family to relocate twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday. Regardless of the Little's efforts to elude the Legion, in 1929 their Lansing, Michigan home was burned to the ground, and two years later Earl's mutilated body was found lying across the town's trolley tracks. Police ruled both accidents, but the Little's were certain that members of the Black Legion were responsible. Louise had an emotional breakdown several years after the death of her husband and was committed to a mental institution. Her children were split up amongst various foster homes and orphanages.
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. The young grasshoppers takes a leap and reviews non-fiction material. Tom Stanton's book harbors tremendous scenes of jubilation and celebration, as well as illustrates the depth of darkness that sometimes distorts humanity. Horrible acts of racial terrorism are performed by a Michigan organization calling themselves the "Black Legion" in the very town where three different professional sports team reach the peak of their sport. There is a lot of history, a lot of facts, a lot of somber reflection, and as usual some laughs. Enjoy! Tune in every Tuesday for a new episode of The Broken Shelf.
