Hosted by Kerry DiamondProduced by Catherine Baker and Jenna SadhuEdited by Jenna SadhuMusic by Tralala, “All Fired Up”For more than two decades, Caroline Styne has been a force in the L.A. restaurant world. She and her business partner, Chef Suzanne Goin, opened restaurants including Lucques and a.o.c. that defined what we think of as California food today: small plates, market-driven menus, relaxed elegance, and organic wines. She's a master sommelier and a business whiz with a lot on her plate: her hospitality company The Lucques Group manages two a.o.c. locations, a baking business, two restaurants at The Proper Hotel in Downtown L.A., and the concessions for the 17,000-seat Hollywood Bowl. In today's episode, Caroline talks with host Kerry Diamond about her career, her hospitality group, and how the L.A. restaurant scene is fairing in the midst of the writers' and actors' strikes. They also talk about something very close to her heart: L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade, an event spearheaded by Carolyn, Suzanne, and Chef David Lentz that has raised more than $8 million to fight childhood cancers. The upcoming L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade is taking place Saturday, Sept. 23rd, and tickets are on sale right now. Thank you to OpenTable for supporting this episode. Radio Cherry Bombe is a production of The Cherry Bombe Podcast Network. My special guest today is Beth Herzhaft. My friend. And she happens to be a very famous photographer. She takes us behind the lens to see her art through her eyes. Beth got her first break in the business by sneaking into the art dept at Capitol Records. She ran headlong into the head of the art department and somehow persuaded him to look at her newbie portfolio. It must have been good - It resulted in her getting her first album cover for Capitol (photographing rapper Schooly-D) Now, Beth's clients include Warner Bros, Sony Music, Interscope, Billboard, and once upon a time, Lucques. She has shot many of the world's biggest music artists. We look at her 90's Vintage LA Streets photos together and Beth tells each story. My very special guest today is Singer & Songwriter, Emily Halpern. I regard these two things in life as highly valuable. The Gift of Laughter - I can never repay the gift of the laughter that someone shared with me. The Gift of Music I can never repay a music artist for the gift of their music, and how it makes me feel. I can never fully explain to them how life wouldn't be nearly as sweet for living without the gift of their music. Theses are gifts that I can never repay in full. I was aware of Emily Halpern's writing years before I knew who she was or had met her. Her words had made me laugh, so many countless nights watching Black-Ish, of which she was a writer and Producer from 2016 - 2017. And who could forget “Booksmart” Directed by Olivia Wilde written by Emily Halpern, Susan Vogel, Sarah Haskins and Katie Silberman? Those laughs made my cheeks sting pink. Booksmart laughs were guilty pleasure laughs for sure. I was introduced to her when I created a “Love Letter to Luqcues”. Lucques was the infamous restaurant in LA owned by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, and operated by General Manager Matt Duggan. It had closed during covid, for good. I was looking for love stories on the patrons of Lucques. Matt Duggan said that I should speak to Emily Halpern, a screenwriter. And when I did, Emily Halpern had one of the sweetest love stories of all. You see, Emily had her second date with her husband Evan at Lucques, tucked away in a corner table in the bar. The way Emily tells it, They both knew they had found each other's soulmate that night. They had their wedding at Lucques. And, Their first born daughter Franny just missed her very first Sunday Super at Lucques before the Pandemic shut everything down. They are where we come together and make lifelong memories. And right now, they are facing extinction. The Covid-19 crisis threatens to permanently close 85% of independent restaurants. 16 million people risk loosing their jobs, disproportionately impacting people of color and single mothers. They are our friends, our neighbors, our farmers, our bartenders, our family. One in four people who lost their jobs during the pandemic were restaurant workers. Without your help our favorite places to eat will be gone…forever. Tell congress to PASS THE RESTAURANT ACT now. Visit save restaurants.com www.saverestaurants.com/
