What does 2025 have in store for the fine wine world? How are key players planning for this new year and where will they invest their time, and money? Felicity and Pauline caught up with six major wine personalities, to ask them what they see ahead in 2025. Here is what they discussed: · China: The impact of the country's slow recovery and how the wine market has drastically changed in five years (with some very positive trends, we promise!) · Global: The geopolitical turmoil and taxes and tariffs, both in the USA and in the UK, and how companies are adapting · Consumption: The rapid decline of wine consumption — notably away from home — in major Western markets and the impact on the fine wine trade. Our experts also discuss the different steps they are taking to overcome these challenges. · Markets: How major players are investing in Brazil, South East Asia and new African markets, and what it takes to be successful in these fast-growing markets. · Styles: The “Burgundification” of fine wine and what it means for the fine wine market generally. It's a bleak outlook for domestic wine production, with a two-decade low forecast. Estimates suggest New Zealand's output will be down 21% this year. Director-General of International Organisation of Vine and Wine, John Barker says it's largely due to frost damage in Marlborough. He told Heather du Plessis-Allan other climate issues contributed to a low wine output from the Southern Hemisphere. Barker says the Northern Hemisphere will be likely worse because of a small harvest from France. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode features Sommelier and Wine Director, Steven Grubbs, who currently manages four wine programs in Georgia. His longest role is with Five and Ten in Athens, where he got his start in the industry, to the newest now being Commune, a listening room and wine bar in Avondale estates which conveniently combines his love for wine and music as he is also a musician. You'll hear about his approach to this wine list, which is a little different than programs he has designed in the past for several reasons, and you'll also hear a bit about his previous experience opening Empire State South here in Atlanta, which was a hub of the wine community for many years. He talks about how ESS served as an incubator of sorts for so many talented people who continued on to have successful careers in food and beverage. Steven has a wealth of knowledge about the evolultion of the wine industry here in the Southeast, and he shares some interesting perspectives on the changes in Georgia's supply chain over the years. We also analyze how he continues to find joy in multiple passions, from wine to music to making furniture, and he also offers some insight for how to navigate the current wine market. Belinda Chang says that what makes her different is that she thinks small, like really small, about every single detail for an event. That includes being intentional about having women design each element, from the name cards to the tequila she's pouring. She wants every part of the experience to be unique to you - a rare occurrence these days. She shares with Jeanne how a house full of friends and strangers most nights of the week led her to hospitality; why she took a non-paying job in a kitchen; how she pivoted when the world shut down during COVID; why you should NEVER buy the bar package; and why the best thing you can do is learn Excel. Belinda Chang is a sommelier, an experiential storyteller, and lifestyle expert. She is the only bipoc woman to win a James Beard award in a drinks category in 2011 and was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as the “global virtual wine experience guru” in 2019. Why do the wines change when you're pairing them with kale versus other greens? Why should you avoid storing wine in the fridge? What's the best question you can ask a sommelier in a restaurant? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Vanessa Price, the author of Big Macs and Burgundy: Wine Pairings for the Real World and the wine expert for The TODAY Show. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Highlights What inspired Vanessa to pair wine with classic McDonald's foods? How did Vanessa pair pastrami sandwich (with a dill pickle) with wine? What gives Chilean Carmenère a bell pepper taste? How do the characteristics of different greens lend themselves to different types of wine? What is meant by the “shape of acidity” and how can it help you to learn more about a wine? Why shouldn't we leave bubbly in the fridge for more than one to two weeks? What were some of the challenges Vanessa encountered when writing her book? How was Big Macs and Burgundy received by the wine industry? How is Vanessa localizing Big Macs and Burgundy with each new translation? What was Vanessa's approach to curating the wine list at Mavericks? Which rare and special wines have been included in Mavericks wine list? Why did Vanessa create a skin contact section on the wine list and which types of wine are included? What's the best question you can ask a sommelier for a wine recommendation? What is Vanessa's favourite wine book? What's Vanessa's favourite wine gadget? Key Takeaways Vanessa's advice wasn't focused only on fast food and candy. She also shared great tips about healthier foods. We should avoid storing wine in a food fridge because the low humidity can dry out the cork, causing shrinkage, etc. I also liked her advice that if you pay more attention to the shape of the acidity and the shape of the impression of the tannin, you can probably learn a lot more about a wine. The best question you can ask a sommelier in a restaurant is sharing information about what you like already, even if that's simply showing them a picture on your phone of a label from a wine you like. Have you ever wondered which wine pairs best with your favourite guilty pleasure snack? Why are Cheetos and Twinkies great for learning about food and wine pairing? How can everyday foods encourage you to try wines you may have otherwise avoided? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Vanessa Price, the author of Big Macs and Burgundy: Wine Pairings for the Real World and the wine expert for The TODAY Show. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Highlights What was it like for Vanessa to introduce her non-drinking grandparents to wine in their 80s? How did wine culture inspire Vanessa to pursue a career in the industry? What did Vanessa discover about publishing after writing her first book? What was Vanessa's journey to starting her column in New York Magazine? How did Vanessa choose which food and wine pairings to include in Big Macs and Burgundy? What was the idea behind pairing wine with 100 different candies? Why did Vanessa choose Sancerre as the best wine to pair with Cheetos? How can you best pair licorice, twinkies, s'mores, and cronuts with wine? What was it about circus peanuts that inspired someone to try a new type of wine? Key Takeaways I like the creative and fun way that Vanessa has explored the concept of high-low pairings, including which wines go with our favourite guilty pleasure snacks. She makes a great point that snacks like Cheetos and Twinkies are great for learning about food and wine pairing because they are simpler in flavour and texture, so it's easier to understand what will pair well with them. I liked her examples of how everyday foods encourage you to try wines you may have otherwise avoided. She talked about circus peanuts helped her discover orange Muscat for the first time. Welcome to Episode 1444 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Emilia Aiello. More about Emilia Aiello: Emilia Aiello is an Oakland, CA native, born to an immigrant Italian family. Unknowingly, she began her wine career in her cousin's restaurant in their hometown of Oakland, California. In 2012 she moved to New York City and continued her restaurant career at Lupa Osteria Romana in Greenwich Village. In 2016 she accepted the Wine Director position and in 2018, took on the dual role of General Manager/Wine Director. Emilia's love to learn, combined with her interest in discovering her Sicilian roots, led her to take a profound interest in southern Italian wines. In 2016 she passed the rigorous Vinitaly International Wine Ambassador exam which only led her further down the rabbit hole. In 2018 she embarked on a grape harvest adventure on Mt. Etna, Sicily, where she worked with Ciro' and Stef Biondi. Since then, she frequently travels to the region and in 2021 made the first accurate and publicly accessible map of the Etna DOC wine region. After a pandemic harvest in Ciro', Calabria with Francesco and Laura De Franco of 'A Vita, Emilia began her current business endeavor, Cittavino & Co.- an online wine company dedicated to the study and promotion of lesser known southern Italian wine regions. She speaks Italian fluently and travels to Italy regularly, as working with producers, walking their vineyards and cellars, has become fundamental to her documentation of the rich viticultural history of the South. Her choice to focus on smaller producers is based on her belief that wine is food and that farm work should be respected, revered, and earn a livable wage. Emilia is constantly in awe and in search of the intersectionality of cultures. She is so excited to share the cosmopolitan history of southern Italy with you! In addition to being a Vinitaly International Italian Wine Ambassador Emilia is a WSET Diploma Candidate.
