Hi, I'm Carolyn Harding, producer/host of GrassRoot Ohio, conversations with everyday people, working on important issues, here in columbus and all around Ohio. For the past five years I've been honored to interview guests working for a better world in their communities, state, country, and, quite frankly, the world, in all areas of justice - environmental, social, racial and economic. My first guests were young activists working to pass the Lake Erie Bill of Rights, one of the first Rights of Nature laws ever to pass in the US, giving the citizens of Toledo legal rights to protect the health of their main drinking water source. I got to interview Ohio activists working on: Women's Reproductive Rights; Black lives matter; folks making home-made protective masks for health care workers at the top of the pandemic; common sense gun reform; running for public office, even when the party pre-selects/endorses and funds “winners” before the primaries; protecting LGBTQIA+ rights at the State house; ranked choice voting; curbside composting; safe streets; organic farming; protecting the Columbus Metro water supply from oil & gas production and radioactive waste, etc. I interviewed city-wide and state-wide ballot initiative organizers with campaigns to: give Columbus citizens the legal right to protect their water from oil and gas production; End Qualified Immunity; Ensure $15 an hour to Ohio workers; End Gerrymandering; and Inshrine Women's reproductive rights into the Ohio Constitution. I interviewed writers, doctors, musicians, housewives, attorney's, nurses, film makers, teachers, bee keepers, retired fire fighters … People who felt the call to protect their communities, nature, rights - to stand up and fight back, in oh so many ways. Throughout these five years we Won and we Lost. And we got back up, adjusted, shifted and are working to create a better world for everyone and all life on this planet. I want to thank each GrassRoot Ohio guest, who shared your cause, your work and your unique stories with us. Thank You. You challenge and inspire us to do better. I want to thank the production teams at wgrn.org and wcrsfm.org for helping me get started and supporting me all along. I want to thank you, my listeners on air, podcasts and viewers on YouTube. I hope you gained as much insight, courage and gratitude as I have. GrassRoot Ohio is ending in its current form. I'm taking a hiatus. I'm curious to know what the next chapter of my life and work will be. So, It's a wrap my friends- In solidarity for Equality, Sustainability & Justice for All. Thanks for Joining Me. Ohio's system for creating legislative districts is broken. When new maps are drawn every ten years, the party in power can manipulate the lines so they can hold onto their power by picking and choosing the voters they want to pack into their own districts, rather than letting Ohio's voters have a real voice in the statehouse or on Capitol Hill. It's time to change that. And the Citizens Not Politicians ballot initiative will change it by ending gerrymandering in Ohio once and for all, if it's approved by voters in the fall. As retired Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor and former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown tell us in the Public Education Matters Season 4 finale, there's a good reason the citizen-led initiative has so much bipartisan support. We also hear from OEA President Scott DiMauro about the important role OEA members can play in this year's elections to help shape the public education landscape in our state. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE AMENDMENT | The Citizens Not Politicians Amendment will end gerrymandering by empowering citizens, not politicians, to draw fair districts using an open and transparent process. It will:Create the 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission made up of Democratic, Republican, and Independent citizens who broadly represent the different geographic areas and demographics of the state. Ban current or former politicians, political party officials and lobbyists from sitting on the Commission.Require fair and impartial districts by making it unconstitutional to draw voting districts that discriminate against or favor any political party or individual politician.Require the commission to operate under an open and independent process. She initially joined the Supreme Court on Jan. 1, 2003, becoming the 148th Justice and giving the Court its first- ever female majority. Maureen O'Connor is the tenth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, the first woman to lead the state judicial branch of government, a Cleveland State School of Law graduate, and a member of the Cleveland State Law School Hall of Fame. Chief Justice O'Connor is the recipient of numerous awards from local bar associations to statewide and national organizations. Among them is Ohio State Bar's highest honor, The Ohio Bar Medal, for ‘unusually meritorious service to the legal profession, the community and humanity.' She is the longest-serving statewide elected woman in Ohio history. Chief Justice O'Connor has led significant reforms and improvements in the Ohio judicial system and is a leader nationally. Her commitment to modernization of the courts across the state is unmatched. Since 2015, she has endowed Ohio local courts with almost 40 million dollars to add and enhance technology. This funding has increased access to justice for litigants, defendants, and the public. The foresight of providing funds to local courts for technology made Ohio a leader in its ability to continue to administer justice through the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Chief Justice O'Connor has worked to improve fairness in the judicial system. She was selected by her peers in the Conference of Chief Justices to co-chair the National Task Force on Fines, Fees, and Bail Practices in 2016. The Task Force issued a report that provides judges, lawyers, and court personnel guidance in the law related to fines, fees, and bail as well as best practices. In Ohio, she has advocated for reform to ensure people are not held in jail prior to resolution of their case simply because they cannot afford bail. She strongly advocated for the creation of a statewide criminal sentencing database and the implementation of a uniform sentencing entry to establish standardized data for felony sentencing. She believes that judges, lawyers, and the public will benefit by being informed about the pattern of criminal sentencing in Ohio and the need for uniformity to insure a fair justice system across the state. She created a task force on conviction integrity to look at policies and practices to determine equity, fairness, and advise the judiciary and the legislature. From 1985 to 1993, O'Connor served as Magistrate, Summit County Probate Court. From 1993 to 1995, she served as Judge, Summit County Court of Common Pleas, and was elected as administrative judge of the court. Serving in local and trial courts, she learned that many of society's most difficult problems are manifested in the legal issues that come before the courts. As chief justice, it became clear that the emerging opioid abuse and its impact on court dockets needed a more collaborative response across state lines. An eight-state initiative to combat the opioid epidemic was created in which information sharing and best practices were not constrained by state boundaries. She has increased the role of specialized dockets, to bring community resources together to provide an opportunity for a second chance, where warranted. She holds trial courts in esteem for the challenging work they do and the opportunities they create. Chief Justice O'Connor left the Summit County bench to serve her community as Summit County Prosecuting Attorney from 1995 to 1999 and was honored by Cleveland State University with the Distinguished Alumnae Award for Civic Achievement and received numerous other awards. In 1999, she was elected with Governor Bob Taft to serve as Ohio Lieutenant Governor and Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. After 9-11, she became the state's first liaison with the newly formed U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. As Ohio's leader in Homeland Security, she chaired the State of Ohio Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee. Chief Justice O'Connor joined the Court in January 2003, was re-elected as an associate justice in 2008 and elected twice as Chief Justice in 2010 and 2016. She was unopposed for reelection as chief justice in 2016. Since her retirement in December of 2022, she has been a leader for the effort in Ohio to amend the Ohio Constitution to create a redistricting commission with members selected from the citizens of our state. There will be no politicians or lobbyists eligible for appointment to the commission. The goal is to end gerrymandering and establish fair districts for both the Ohio Legislature and our congressional districts. The amendment will b...

On this special edition of The Narrative podcast, CCV President Aaron Baer, Policy Director David Mahan, and Communications Director Mike Andrews share their raw thoughts on the passage of Issue 1, that, among a host of other detrimental consequences, created a right to abortion up to birth and without any restrictions in our Ohio Constitution. Listen now to hear what the amendment means for Ohio, what's next, and what lessons we can take into 2024. For further reflection, they referenced 2 Corinthians 4, Isaiah 62, and Psalm 27. Rod Arquette Show with Greg Hughes Rundown – “Wingman Wednesday,” November 8, 20235:05 pm: Troy Walker, Mayor of Draper City, joins the program to discuss the latest in the development plans for the Point of the Mountain and his concern that the development contract is not rushed through the approval process. 6:05 pm: Shawn Carney, President and CEO of 40 Days for Life, joins the show to discuss the amendment of the Ohio Constitution approved by voters yesterday that allows abortion up until birth and erodes parental rights, and how abortion activists will expand their schemes to other states.6:38 pm: Hans von Spakovsky, Legal Analyst at the Heritage Foundation, joins Rod and Greg to discuss why he says judges have no legal authority to ban Donald Trump from election ballots in 2024.
Democrats took some wins yesterday in key elections around the country. Notably, voters approved an Ohio ballot measure to lock abortion rights into the state constitution. It looks like they've legalized recreational marijuana too. Kentucky voters are keeping Democratic Governor Andy Beshear and Democrats collected seats in the Virginia legislature. Republicans did win in Mississippi, where Governor Tate Reeves will stay on. Is that an indicator of where the 2024 Presidential election is headed? We will talk to John Rothmann about it. Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX is facing 115 years in prison when he's sentenced in March. He was convicted of all seven counts against him in a fraud trial. Does this send a message to the cryptocurrency industry or is this basic fraud that could have happened in any sector? Michael Hiltzik with the LA Times will unravel it. The Mark Thompson Show 11/8/23
SEASON 2 EPISODE 70: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) ELECTION SCOREBOARD: Democrats and democracy kick MAGA's ass: another Trump off-year disaster as Republicans not only don't flip the Virginia Senate, they've lost the Virginia House! Deep discounts on "PRESIDENT YOUNGKIN 2024" Red Vests! In Ohio, it's a landslide as Issue 1 wins by 57-43 and puts Abortion Rights INTO the Ohio Constitution. And Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear goes from winning by 4000 votes four years ago, to winning by five points last night. Plus there are expansions of Democratic control in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It's another state-level disaster for Trump's GOP and what's the response of the CNN political director who whored himself out to get Trump live from that disastrous Kaitlan Collins Town Hall? David Chalian says "It's not the Democratic BRAND that's in trouble here, it's Joe Biden that's in trouble here." Actually that's not true either - and CNN should fire this idiot Chalian ASAP because it's CNN that's in trouble here. (9:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump managed to combine stochastic terrorism and his Dementia J. Trump/Elmer J. Fudd split personality in one post, insisting someone “must stop” people who don't realize he's worth billions more even than he claims. America's leading Parking Lot Legal Scholar Alina Habba insists they'll be filing for a mistrial because they didn't let Trump talk enough in court (oh, they let him talk enough in court). The good news is, Judge Chutkan shut them down on the latest delaying tactic. They wanted three more months for pre-trial motions; she told them she'll give them two weeks and they'll like it. And as more details emerge of Trump's plan for a military dictatorship, Jeff Clark, the mediocre little man who might be the Attorney General who oversees the transition of the DOJ into the Ministry of Vengeance will finally have to face having his law license suspended. While most reporting stays focused on Sunday's New York Times Biden poll crater, there's a new CNN poll that's a little better. And everybody ignores the work of a private, right-leaning pollster called Cygnal with eye-opening good news for President Biden. Not only has his net approval/disapproval improved a whopping five points in ONE MONTH but the issue seen as sinking Biden – inflation – is beginning to shrink its dominance. A year ago 42% said inflation was the key topic. Two months ago it was still 37%. Now it's down to 31%. The less it is decisive, the more it points to Biden's reelection. Still, Politico reports that after three months the Biden campaign has the results of its almost exclusively positive, issue-focused, non-Trump advertising: It's failed. Completely. The campaign is being urged to re-focus on Trump but remains reluctant, still convinced that Trump will be torn down enough by his Republican challengers (if it doesn't happen at tonight's debate, it won't). And more over, the question has to be raised: if you ARE selling Joe Biden's Greatest Accomplishments, isn't the first thing on that list, the fact that HE beat Trump? Wasn't the most vivid, youthful, meaningful moment of his presidency his Defense-Of-Democracy speech in Philadelphia last year? Isn't the greatest image of Biden, “Dark Brandon?” Joe? You beat him. You're the only one who has. We need you to do it again. And we need you to TELL US THAT. Not only WHY he and the evil he personifies and spreads MUST be defeated, but, bluntly, that you did it before and you will do it again: that you are the man to… beat the ever-loving shit out of him. B-BLOCK (30:49) IN SPORTS: Now begins the blowback. Wisconsin says goodbye and good riddance to no-longer-beloved-son Craig Counsell. The President of Mexico knows who the next manager of the Padres should be. And that drying up of the nourishing milk of ever-increasing TV fees for baseball? It just spread to basketball and hockey, where right now 26 teams are making $0 for telecasts during the 2024-25 season. (35:57) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Washington Post followed up on its Trump Dictatorship piece with more good analysis and a Bothsidesist headline that would've looked stupid even above a travel story. There's yet ANOTHER scandal for new 5th String Speaker Mike Johnson. And yesterday he was excoriating Rep. Tlaib for hate and prejudice. A month ago he was promising to turn Gaza into a parking lot. It isn't which side you're on – it's that violence and destruction are fine as long as you're MAGA. C-BLOCK (41:24) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The New York City Marathon ended Sunday night. I swear, there are people walking the streets of my Fun City, still wearing their gold medals indicating they ran the damn thing. It flashes me back to the days when the Marathon had to beg for me to do a preview for CNN, and to the nightmares I still have of anchoring the Los Angeles Marathon… on RADIO.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims killed 17 Christians in Benue State On Sunday, October 29th, Fulani Muslim herdsmen and other terrorists killed six Christians in Benue State, Nigeria, following the slaughter of 10 others earlier last month, reports Morning Star News. In addition, another Christian in Benue State, 80-year-old Washima Erukaa, was killed after being kidnapped on September 23rd. A relative said, “His captors had demanded that we pay a ransom of $6,340, but we were not able to raise the money.” So, the Muslim terrorists killed him on October 23rd. Please pray that God would comfort the families who are grieving. Nigeria is the sixth most dangerous nation worldwide for Christians Turkey withdraws ambassador from Israel, breaks off ties As the death toll among Palestinian civilians has soared in the war between Israel and Hamas, the Muslim terrorists, Turkish President Recep Erdoğan said Saturday that he was recalling its ambassador to Israel and breaking off contacts with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in protest at the bloodshed in Gaza, reports AFP. The Muslim leader announced the decisions on the eve of what promises to be a difficult visit to Turkey by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Turkey, a Palestinian ally, had been mending torn relations with Israel until last month's start of the Israel-Hamas war. Iranian Muslims recruiting suicide bombers to hit Israel A hard-line Iranian group has been actively recruiting potential suicide bombers for operations in Israel, reports 24/7 News Around the World. The group responsible for this recruitment drive, Hezbollah, different from the Lebanese militant group with the same name, has initiated a campaign in the southeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, a significant place in Shia Islam. Posters featuring calls for 'martyrdom' have appeared on the streets of Mashhad, imploring residents to submit their personal details for consideration. These posters declare, “It's time for Jihad,” as they seek people to join a “special battalion of martyr seekers for Palestine.” Int'l House of Prayer Founder Mike Bickle accused of sexual abuse The Roys Report revealed that Mike Bickle, founder of the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Missouri, is facing allegations of clergy sexual abuse “spanning several decades,” according to an October 28th statement from the ministry's leaders. Titus 1:6a declares, “An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife.” Stuart Greaves, the Executive Director of the International House of Prayer, read an announcement during the 11 a.m. service at the Forerunner Church in Grandview, Missouri. GREAVES: “We are heartbroken to share that we recently became aware of serious allegations of sexual immorality directed against Mike Bickle. Our leadership team takes these allegations very seriously. And we are laboring for truth, light, redemption and righteousness.” Mike Bickle has led the House of Prayer since 1999. It is a 24/7 charismatic, prayer ministry with about 2,500 full-time staff, students, and interns, which attracts people from around the world. Ohio Catholic churches vandalized over pro-life convictions ahead of Nov. 7th vote Just days ahead of a statewide vote on whether to enshrine abortion into the Ohio Constitution, vandalism is reportedly on the rise against Catholic churches in the Buckeye State because of their outspokenness against the pro-abortion constitutional amendment, reports LifeSiteNews.com. According to the Ohio Attorney General's Office, the Issue 1 amendment would go far beyond even Roe v. Wade. It would block prohibitions on partial-birth and dismemberment abortions, allow abortionists to target disabled babies, and end parental consent requirements for abortion. Plus, if Issue 1 passes tomorrow in Ohio, it would empower minors to make their own decisions about contraception, sterilization, and so-called “gender transition.” 10-year-old quadruple amputee to climb mountain to raise money And finally, a 10-year-old quadruple amputee is going to attempt to summit a 656-foot mountain to raise money for other children with disabilities, reports Good News Network. The climber, Luke Mortimer, is determined to summit Embsay Crag, in North Yorkshire, England which he can see from his rural home. The kind-hearted youngster has dubbed the peak his ‘Everest,' and is undertaking the challenge as an attempt to “return the favor” to charities which have helped him. Luke was just seven years old when he contracted the severe bacterial infections meningococcal meningitis and septicemia. Although he survived the deadly illnesses, he lost all four of his limbs and needed 23 painful surgeries over a ten-week period to replace missing skin and address his wounds. Charities and fundraisers set up in the wake of Luke's amputations managed $18,000 worth of donations from an army of well-wishers, allowing him to get his prosthetics. During the two-mile journey to the top of the summit, Luke will be wearing a set of shortened knee-length prosthetics called ‘stubbies' for the climb. Here at The Worldview we salute Luke Mortimer and pray that he successfully completes his mountainous journey and that the people of Britain would be generous as they bless other children who face amputations. You would think that no one could condone the slaughter of innocent men, women, and children in Israel by Hamas. But Democrats like Rep. Rashida Talib have failed to condemn the beheading of children. Protest rallies have supported Hamas in major US cities. How can this happen? Mark answers that question on today's program. For more insights look at Linda Harvey's blog post. https://www.missionamerica.com/article/abortion-supporters-and-beheaded-babies/ There is little we can do to help Israel except to pray. Season 4, Episode 17This coming November, Ohioans are going to see a proposed amendment on their ballot. You can find a link to the text of that amendment in our shownotes. There's been a lot of emotion in Ohio right now about reproductive rights / abortion - and also a lot of confusion. This past summer, we held a special election here that was aimed at changing our Ohio Constitution to make it HARDER to pass ANY kind of constitutional amendment. That had a surprisingly large turnout, and failed... and while it didn't specifically engage the question of abortion access, it was certainly levied by political conservatives as a protection against what's coming on this coming November's ballot from progressive side of this conversation. The idea was to make it more difficult to pass any amendment to Ohio's constitution and since it didn't pass... the standard rules remain: to pass an amendment to Ohio's constitution, it takes a simple majority vote, or 51%. In other words, this coming vote needs over 50% to embed the measure into our constitution. What we want to do in today's special episode is to clearly explain what the proposed amendment says, means, and doesn't say. We want to also lay out what is real currently regarding Ohio law, abortion access, and the realities about care for women and children. We're doing this because we believe strongly in demonstrating a consistent ethic of life... which comes from our fundamental belief as Christians that all are made in the Image of God, and all life is to be treated with honor and dignity... especially the lives of those most vulnerable, as scripture says over and over again. Christians can and do disagree about policy... about what particular ways are the best ways to legislate in support of a consistent ethic of life. So we want to help equip you to prayerfully discern this policy issue at hand... and to consider wisely and Christianly how to engage in this ballot issue. You can find more about our consistent ethic of life through a link that's also in our show notes.Shownotes:AmendmentOther In-Between Conversations:S3E16: Human Dignity And Our Value Life EthicS2E18: Rebuilding A Culture That Values LifeTwitter: @stephkrider AND @RichNathanFacebook

The Ohio Secretary of State has officially validated all of the signatures that were required to get an extreme pro-abortion initiative on the ballot in November of 2023. This dangerous, California-style proposal is misleadingly titled, “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety.” In reality, it would erase the current health and safety standards for mothers and their children, if passed. Here is what this extreme initiative would do: Permanently enshrine painful, late-term abortions all the way up until birth in The Ohio Constitution. Allow minors to obtain abortions without their parent's consent or knowledge. Open the door to sex-transitioning surgery for minors without their parent's consent or knowledge. And it is all funded by out-of-state special interest groups who want to turn Ohio into California. For more information, go to CreatedEqual.org/ohio Find Mike at https://www.ohiolife.org/mike_gonidakis Excerpt from Dayton Daily News: Mark Harrington, President of Created Equal, said, “Extreme, out-of-state abortion forces are trying to purchase a part of the Ohio Constitution. Unable to win in the legislature, extremists are attempting to enshrine painful, late-term abortions in the Ohio Constitution. Ohioans will reject this takeover and defeat the abortion ballot measure.” Full article here: https://www.daytondailynews.com/ohio/ohio-amendment-ensuring-access-to-abortion-certified-for-november-ballot/2U2LOZC43ZA4BO4BJHET7ILGUI/
On Aug. 8, Ohioans will head to the polls for a special election on Issue 1. If approved, Issue 1 would make changing the state's constitution more difficult. Specifically, the ballot proposal would amend the state constitution, raising the threshold for future constitutional amendments and requiring a 60% supermajority of Ohio voters to pass, instead of the current 50% plus one vote. Additionally, getting on the ballot would require signatures from voters in all 88 counties, as opposed to the 44 county threshold currently in place.rnrnIn putting Issue 1 on the August ballot, Republican lawmakers have said they hope to make it more difficult to amend the constitution in the future, specifically citing efforts underway to put a constitutional amendment legalizing abortion on the November general election ballot. Other supporters of Issue 1-including the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Restaurant Association and the Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association-have cited an anticipated ballot issue to raise the minimum wage next year as the primary reason for their support.rnrnLocal opponents of the issue include Cleveland City Council, Greater Cleveland Congregations, and Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates. In a statement urging Ohioans to vote no on Issue 1, Cleveland City Council said the proposed amendment "would destroy citizen-driven ballot initiatives as we know them, upending Ohioans right to make decisions thereby making it more difficult to amend the state constitution."rnrnJoin us for a forum moderated by Rick Jackson, and hear from both advocates and opponents of State Issue 1.

A critical ballot issue on abortion is coming to the Ohio ballot this November. This amendment will rewrite the Ohio Constitution and redefine the debate over protecting innocent human life across the nation. The question is: Who has the power to invent a human right with just paper and pen? Is it the citizens, the politicians or a much higher power? Our team turns once again to the preeminent professor of political philosophy in America, Dr. William B. Allen to lead this discussion on where do rights really come from.
