Racking up win after win, Mack Beggs is well on his way to an undefeated season and a second consecutive Texas state high school wrestling crown. But, far from being recognized as the top athlete that he is, Mack finds himself the target of criticism from parents, social media trolls and national commentators. As a young trans man, Mack wants nothing more than the opportunity to compete against other young men. But Texas law prevents this, and so Mack has no choice but to take on not only his female competitors but also the kind of vicious discrimination that is regularly inflicted against young trans athletes throughout the country. In their standout Emmy®-nominated documentary “Changing the Game”, director Michael Barnett (“Superheroes”) and producers Clare Tucker (“The Mars Generation”) and Alex Schmider (“Disclosure”) follow Mack's victories and struggles along with two other courageous trans athletes: Sarah, a skier and activist in New Hampshire, and Andraya, a track star in Connecticut. Joining Mike and Ken to talk about their game-changing documentary, Michael, Clare and Alex discuss the challenges of making a film about trans athletes in the context of a fraught political context. What led Michael and Clare to invite Alex, the Director of Transgender Representation at GLAAD, to join the creative team as producer, and how did their collaboration benefit the film in multiple ways? Why was it a priority for Michael that the cinematic quality of the film match the visual standards of a Nike ad? And what was the toughest scene, emotionally, to include in the film, and why was it so important for people to see it? Join us for this illuminating conversation with three filmmakers determined to go to the mat to “give these young athletes their stories back”. “Changing the Game” is currently streaming on Hulu. Mack made history when he went undefeated to win the Texas State women's wrestling championship in 2018. He identifies as male but as a result of a ruling by Texas' University Interscholastic League, he was required to compete with the team aligned with the sex stated on his birth certificate. He now amplifies his story to help create understanding and dialogue for the next generation of athletes. Today Mack shares about his personal spiritual journey since high school in self-acceptance, learning noble universal life truths, and healthy boundaries. We also learn why he was inspired to change majors in college from exercise science to psychology focusing on human development and social change in the world. Just in time for Pride month, Changing the Game, the Hulu Original Documentary, debuts following Mack and three other high school transgender athletes all at different stages of their athletic seasons, personal lives, and their unique paths as transgender teens. Together they're working to defend trans girls and women against 20 states trying to make it illegal for them to compete, and in some cases, criminalize affirming healthcare and supportive parenting. Plus Mack comes out as a Star Wars fan, and we discuss our favorite films from the franchise. If you could fly, drive or operate any vehicle in the Star Wars universe, which one would you choose? Podcast Episode 4: The Attack on Nonconformity in Athletics Pt. 1 (The Rant) *Explicit Language* I’m very excited to get into this episode because I’ve always wanted to unpack human variance especially how it shows up in relation to gender identity/expression. Visible differences in the human expression often cause people to be othered, discriminated against, pathologized, brutalized etc. Right now we are seeing the attack on human variance & non conformity in the world of women’s sports which is racist, sexist, transphobic and an overall gross violation of human rights. In particular this episode will highlight the stories of Caster Semenya & JayCee Cooper. Both Caster & JayCee have been thrusted into the spotlight and are helping to undo so dreadful policies that limit certain bodies (in particular trans and gender non conforming folks) from competing as their true selves in women’s sports. **Update** As of June 3, 2019 the Swiss Court temporarily suspends new IAAF rules per Caster Semenya's legal team. Therefore, Caster will not need to take testosterone-reducing medication to compete. Caster Semenya: is a South African Olympic track runner and two time gold medalist in the 800 meter. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a regulation that will require some female track athletes with naturally-elevated testosterone levels to lower those levels with drugs or surgery, if they want to compete in certain women's events on the international stage. JayCee Cooper: is a USA Powerlifter who was banned from competing in the Olympic Women’s Division because she identifies as a trans woman. Some additional subjects discussed in this Episode: **racism, gender essentialism and trans hatred in sports** **Why are we targeting folks in sports who are already so deeply targeted in other areas of society? **Mack Beggs trans man wrestler high school student (forced to wrestle against women) was already medically transitioning. Texas sanctions women’s wrestling. 2016 Texas Policy determining gender based on birth certificates for sports in colleges. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/feb/25/transgender-wrestler-mack-beggs-wins-texas-girls-title **Andraya Yearwood trans femme youth athlete track Connecticut. https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/feb/24/terry-miller-andraya-yearwood-transgender-sprinter/ **Othering of trans women (trans women are women PERIOD!)There is no evidence to suggest that that trans are stealing anything. If you are good at the sport it is your athleticism which has nothing to do with the other athlete of their identity. **Why the mere existence of transwomen creates so much fear in society. **The conflation of body parts and gender **Sexist notion: that anyone assigned male at birth will automatically beat anyone assigned female at birth. **This informs how we discuss trans athletes, intersex athletes and women in general. **Testosterone not the “male sex hormone,” nor is it the key to athletic performance. **There is no such thing as *looking* transgender. **High profile female athletes (like Martina Navratilova) weaponize that notion and if gives more credence to the notion in the first place. It’s a false criticism of women’s sports in general. ***Notion of this influx of cis men posing as transwomen to gain unfair advantages in competitions. Also carries similar narratives to this fear of cis men posing as trans women taking over bathroom spaces. “In the US, there’s not a single reported instance of this kind of voyeurism occurring in states with legal protections for trans people.” https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/5/13/17938102/transgender-people-bathrooms-locker-rooms-schools

First, Colton Haab, a student in the ROTC program at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, claimed that CNN's town hall event on the school shooting was scripted and that they censored him from asking questions that he had and, instead, insisted that he ask the questions that they gave him. CNN denied it. Then, Andrew Klein, whose daughter attends Stoneman Douglas High School, said that a CNN producer told him the day after the shooting they were looking for people to do interviews who would "espouse a certain narrative which was taking the tragedy and turning it into a policy debate." Since then multiple parents and students have made similar claims. CNN is still denying it but they do have a long history of doing exactly that, as documented by Michelle Malkin in 2016. I'll talk about this and other continuing fall-out from the Florida school shooting. Don't forget about the Edwards Notebook and the Veteran's Tip of the Day! All of this and more as time allows.
