In Episode 102, I told you the story of two-year-old Fallon Fridley, a precious little girl in Georgia whose babysitter, a close family friend, tortured and killed her in December 2020. Chaplains often show up on the worst days of people's lives. They arrive in a hospital room after a distressing diagnosis. They accompany police to help inform someone of a loved one's death. One in four Americans have been visited by a chaplain, usually at a hospital or hospice, though chaplains also work in prisons, on college campuses and with the military and police and fire departments. But the role of spiritual caregiver is evolving as society becomes both less religious and more religiously diverse. At the end of last year, Fairview Health Services laid off more than a dozen staff chaplains as part of a larger round of layoffs, raising questions about whether patients' spiritual care will continue to be seen as part of a health system's core services.MPR News host Angela Davis talked with three chaplains about the work they do and how it's changing. This is an encore conversation from January. Guests:The Rev. Jessica Chapman Lape is an assistant professor of Interreligious Chaplaincy and director of the Interreligious Chaplaincy Program at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. She's an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, a staff chaplain at Regions Hospital in St. Paul and a community trained birth doula. The Rev. Michael Le Buhn manages the spiritual care department at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. He previously worked as a chaplain in Allina Health's Mercy Hospital Unity Campus in Fridley and at Open Table Nashville, a nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness. Michael is a veteran of the United States Army.Rabbi Lynn Liberman is the community chaplain with Jewish Family Service of St. Paul. She has worked in a congregation, as a hospice and hospital chaplain, and she is a volunteer police and fire chaplain for Mendota Heights and West St. Paul. *Fallon Fridley should have turned 5 yesterday. I'm re-releasing this episode in her honor.*On December 9, 2020, in Sandy Springs, Georgia, two-year-old Fallon Fridley was spending the night at the home of her babysitter, who was also a good friend of Fallon's mom, Kristin. The babysitter, Kirstie Flood, called 911 that evening to report little Fallon unresponsive, and Fallon was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Kirstie claimed Fallon had taken a fall earlier that day at the playground, but after incriminating online searches were found on her phone, Kirstie was arrested two days after Fallon's death. As Kirstie continues to await trial, additional damning information has been discovered by investigators, including video footage of the actual crime. In this episode, you'll also hear my conversation with Fallon's heartbroken mommy, Kristin Gantt, who told me about her special little girl and how her loss has affected her family. This is the tragic story of Fallon Fridley.Justice for Fallon on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JusticeForFallon Parents of Murdered Children website: https://pomc.org/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook and Instagram:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodYou can also follow the podcast on: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/sufferthelittlechildrenpodcast Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpod My Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. The greatness of the pop group the Beatles might just be in the musical possibilities inherent in the group's songs. This Saturday night at 6:30 at Crooners Supper Club in Fridley, four Minneapolis guitarists explore Beatles music. They are Jeff Perry, Tim Sparks, Joel Shapira and Zach Harris, with bassist Gary Raynor and drummer Bob Johnston. Phil Nusbaum went to a Beatles Reimagined rehearsal and filed this report.
Had the chance to talk with Paul Magers who is enjoying retirement out in Palm Springs and we covered a plethora of topics from retirement to people flocking to Death Valley and when he recalls things really taking off as a news reporter, even telling the amazing story of the 1986 tornado that swept through Brooklyn Park and Fridley. Plus, we also reminisce on his twenty year career at KARE 11.
Hydrogen demand throughout the world reached 94 million metric tons in 2021, according to the International Energy Agency's (IEA's) Global Hydrogen Review 2022, an annual report issued by the IEA in late September last year. Demand for new applications grew to about 40,000 metric tons (up 60% from 2020, albeit from a low base). Notably, the IEA said some key new applications for hydrogen are showing signs of progress. Announcements for new steel projects are growing fast, according to the agency, just one year after the startup of the first demonstration project using pure hydrogen in direct reduction of iron. Furthermore, the first fleet of hydrogen fuel cell trains started operating in Germany. There were also more than 100 pilot and demonstration projects reported using hydrogen and its derivatives in shipping, and the IEA noted that major companies have already signed strategic partnerships to secure the supply of these fuels. In the power sector, the use of hydrogen and ammonia is also attracting a lot of attention. The report says announced projects stack up to almost 3.5 GW of potential capacity by 2030. With the future for hydrogen looking so bright, it's no wonder companies are moving quickly to take advantage of the opportunity. Accelera, a new brand launched in March this year as part of Cummins' New Power business segment, is among the companies hoping to cash in on the growth in hydrogen. It opened its first U.S. electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Fridley, Minnesota, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 19. “Fridley was basically the fastest way for us to get capacity on stream quickly,” Alex Savelli, managing director of Hydrogen Technologies for Accelera, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “We announced it in October and we had the ribbon-cutting in May, so within six months.” While the Fridley site was a “brownfield” project, meaning it was built where Cummins already had an existing facility, Accelera is also building “greenfield” projects in other parts of the world. “There are a couple of sites that we've actually selected 18 months ago to be built in Spain and China,” Savelli said. “They're greenfield sites, and from beginning to completion, it probably will take two years before they're up and running.” President Biden visited the Fridley facility on April 3 this year as part of a tour intended to showcase how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are benefitting American manufacturing jobs. It was just two months after Biden signed the IRA that Cummins announced it would begin manufacturing electrolyzers at its Fridley location, which now has about 89,000 square feet dedicated to electrolyzer manufacturing. “Quite a bit of that decision in a lot of ways was supported by some of the good policies that the current administration has put in place with the Infrastructure Bill as well as the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Savelli. “They have certainly underpinned our decision even more strongly. Since then, we have seen demand really pick up.” Most of the hydrogen used around the world today is produced through steam methane reforming using natural gas as the feedstock, which releases carbon dioxide in the process. This is often referred to as “gray hydrogen.” Electrolyzer technology offers a way to produce “green hydrogen,” which is carbon-free and could help hard-to-decarbonize industries become more sustainable. To produce green hydrogen, renewable resources are used to power electrolyzers. “We think with the challenges around climate change and what we need to achieve to actually get to net-zero, hydrogen would definitely be one of the big elements there,” said Savelli. “It will become a multi-billion-dollar opportunity—whether it's here in the Americas, in Europe, or other places—between now and the end of the decade.”
