The portion of scripture that we’ll be studying, Colossians 1:15-23, contains lyrics (verses 15-20) from what was probably an early hymn of the church. Peppered throughout the New Testament we find fragmentary evidence of the church’s earliest hymns. John 1:1-5, Philippians 2:6-11, Ephesians 2:14-16, 1 Timothy 3:16, 2 Timothy 2:11-13, Hebrews 1:3, and 1 Peter […] The post Thoughts To Make Your Heart Sing appeared first on State Road Church.

Sometimes it's tricky to translate the stories of the Bible to what they mean for us today. We were sent in an excellent question about women in the Bible and how to identify with them when the culture seems so different, so Rachel digs into this. She references a piece we did on awkward Biblical love stories, which you can find at parentingforfaith.org/post/awkward-biblical-love-stories Our question today comes from an emotionally, spiritually and physically exhausted parent (can we get an amen?) who'd like some help in how to help her kids grow spiritually when she feels she has so little to give. In our family section, Anna shares about a couple of family devotionals that she likes and some ideas of how to use them so that they feed and resource your family but without being the focus of the discipleship. She mentions Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing by Sally Lloyd-Jones (sallylloyd-jones.com/books/thoughts-heart-sing/)and Indescribable by Louie Giglio (https://passionresources.com/products/louie-giglio-indescribable-childrens-devotional). We'll be making a poll for the final question - if you had to marry someone from the Bible, who would it be? Look out for it and add your answer!

My guest for The Happy Hour # 228 is Jen Wise. Jen holds an MA in Theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and serves as a child advocate with Compassion International as a part of their Artist and Speaker Team. Jen is happy to spend most days rotating between friends, family, writing, cooking, her neighborhood yoga studio, and being an active part of her home church. Jen and I start off the show talking about how we're all walking around exhausted! It doesn't have to be this way, and Jen gives us practical tips on how we can lessen the weight we all feel, all the time. I loved hearing her share about how her own process of letting things go, and fully resting in the grace God has provided. We also chat about friendships, and how in different seasons it can be hard to prioritize, but that it's possible to continue to nurture those relationships. In the second half of the show, the topic of control takes center stage, and we also talk about eating right, getting enough sleep, and all those "taking care of yourself" things that we tend to push to the side. Don't worry friends, our conversation isn't about shaming - it's just the opposite. Jen encourages us that loosening our grip, trusting God more, and taking care of ourselves, helps us live the meaningful life God intends. {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour by subscribing through your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Stitcher). In this episode we discuss: 1. The creative process. 2. The power of worship as we fight fear. 3. How walking through tough seasons strengthens us. Favorite quotes: 1. Something about music taps into the human story and the story that all of us are made to be at home with the one who made us. 2. God flips hard and suffering on its head and says, “Yeah, it's actually out of this pile of rubble and ashes that I'm going to breathe life and beauty.” 3. It's almost always through the hard things, that the really beautiful things that seem to resonate with people are born. In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I love the Year of Living Happy. Do you have any extra strategies that didn't fit in those short chapters? (46:28) 2. I saw that you were preaching on unfulfilled ambition at a church recently. How should we view our ambition as Christians? (51:27) 3. I have never even heard of a business coach. What do you do? (55:44) Links to great things we discussed: 1.
