Mark has a conversation with award winning writer and veteran journalist Janice Landryabout her seventh book, Every Little Thing: How Small Acts of Kindness Make a Big Impact, her 2023 diagnosis of Lyme disease which was part of the inspiration for this book, Janice's life as a writer, how having lived adjacent to the ocean in Canada's East Coast has impacted her creative spirit, and so much more. Prior to the interview Mark shares a personal update, comments from recent episodes and reads a word about two Canadian conferences taking place at the end of April 2026: Toronto Indie Author Conference and GritLIT. (You can use code gritLITfriends at checkout to save 25% off the cost of registration). Mark and Janice talk about: Being of the generation that spent their entire summer days outside and not-connected to anything except friends and the world around them The old school-style desk Janice had when she was young and starting to write which was shoved up against a window that looked out on the ocean Telling herself fictional stories to amuse herself when she was young The ocean being one of the single biggest factors on Janice's creative life The importance of Janice's 2022 book EYE OF THE OCEAN Why it's priceless that we create and share Canadian stories How so much of what we do is about all of the people who help us in our achievements and why it's one of the core messages in Janice's latest book The dramatically debilitating side-effects of Lyme disease Why small acts of kindness and sharing uplifting and positive stories is so important The tiny thing (a tick) that ended up inspiring Janice to write the book EVERY LITTLE THING Importance messages of hope and that you're not alone, which come from the book A very special note that a teacher gave to Janice when she was 10 years old, and why she carried it around for fifty years Advice Janice would offer to beginning writers And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on three different things that came up in the discussion.   Links of Interest: Janice Landry Website Pottersfield Press GritLIT Special 25% Discount Registration Link Draft2Digital PRINT BOOKS FOR INDIE AUTHORS Buy Mark a Coffee Patreon for Stark Reflections Mark's YouTube channel Mark's Stark Reflections on Writing & Publishing Newsletter (Signup) An Author's Guide to Working With Bookstores and Libraries The Relaxed Author Buy eBook Direct Buy Audiobook Direct Publishing Pitfalls for Authors An Author's Guide to Working with Libraries & Bookstores Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City Lover's Moon Hex and the City Only Monsters in the Building The Canadian Mounted: A Trivia Guide to Planes, Trains and Automobiles Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*cker: A Trivia Guide to Die Hard Merry Christmas! Janice is a veteran journalist and proud Haligonian. In May 2025, she released her seventh book, Every Little Thing – how small acts of kindness make a big impact, following her 2023 Lyme disease diagnosis. Janice has since fully recovered and wrote this “small book with big messages” to thank society's many and varied helpers, including some of her own. Janice's longtime publisher is Nova Scotia's Pottersfield Press. Her last two books, Eye of the Ocean and Silver Linings, were both bestsellers. Janice's biggest inspiration is her family, husband, Rob, and daughter, Laura. Through her writing, she also honours her late parents, Baz and Theresa. Janice began writing longform non-fiction to tell the gripping story of her firefighter father's national Medal of Bravery for his part in the near-death rescue of an infant from a harrowing 1978 Halifax house fire.   The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

From notes of affirmation to gift cards, Portland nonprofit Wildly Kind aims to spread acts of kindness to strangers  LONG SYNOPSIS: Wildly Kind is on a mission to spread acts of kindness to strangers, not only in its home base of Portland but also across the nation and around the world. The Portland Tribune recently profiled the three-year-old nonprofit and the national media attention it received for a pop-up event it held in February, which involved setting up a phone booth for people to record anonymous messages of hope and encouragement for others to hear.  Executive director and founder Kayla Lamoreaux says Wildly Kind grew out of a desire to affirm and maintain her sobriety from alcohol through fostering “a community of kindness” by handing out flowers or self-care kits or paying for a stranger’s groceries at the check-out line. Wildly Kind has now grown to include volunteers, corporate sponsors and more than 100 “ambassadors” who go out to perform acts of kindness in more than 20 states and six countries. Ambassadors pay $20 a month to receive a branded t-shirt, a monthly newsletter with ideas for spreading kindness, priority sign-ups for pop-up events and other perks. Lamoreaux joins us to share more details about Wildly Kind and its unique nonprofit model.

Do you ever think about how one small act of kindness can literally change the direction of someone's life? What if YOU could cause that turning point?Today I'm sitting with Bryan Driscoll, author of The Goodness Game, who took an act of kindness he received 20 years ago in Orlando and, with the help of a Craigslist ad, paid it forward in a way that made national headlines and enormous ripple effects. What I love most about this conversation? He shows it's not about trying to change the world overnight. It's about the small choices we make every day, and the consequent ripples that touch not just the people we help, but also their friends, and their friends of friends. If you've ever wondered if those small acts of kindness really matter, or if you're feeling a little bit overwhelmed by all the negativity in the world, this episode is for you. In this episode you'll hear about:Bryan's journey on a Greyhound bus to Florida and the kindness of several strangers who helped him find a place to stay (and one woman who let him stay in her house!)Social trust: what it is (essentially, our faith in strangers), its historical significance, and its decline in modern societyThe importance of curiosity and discomfort in driving positive change and the potential for small acts to create significant ripplesHow to use concepts from The Goodness Game, including “giving without remembering,” honing in on your helper style, and making acts of kindness enjoyableResources & Links:Buy The Goodness Game by Bryan Driscoll and visit goodnessgame.com. And here's some more information about the study on social trust that was mentioned in this episode.Like what you hear? As Muslims around the world celebrate Ramadan, IFRC's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Hossam Elsharkawi, reflects on the humanitarian crises impacting his region and on what Muslims consider a sacred month of fasting, giving and prayer. “Through fasting, you feel what's it like to be hungry, what's it like to be thirsty,” says Elsharkawi. “Ramadan is also a month of giving, when people share their meals and give more to charity.” Elsharkawi also explains the time-honoured tradition of giving in the Islamic world, and about a campaign launched during Ramadan by the IFRC to accept zakat, a traditional form of giving in Muslim culture.

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore a powerful idea inspired by a TikTok video: sometimes, the smallest gesture—like a simple smile—can feel like an answered prayer (Amazon Affiliate Link) to someone in need. In a world filled with stress, loneliness, and silent struggles, you never know what someone is going through. But the good news? You don't need money, grand gestures, or even much time to make someone's day better. This episode dives into 10 simple, cost-free ways to lift someone's spirits and create positive ripple effects in your community. 10 Simple Acts That Can Make Someone's Day: Smile and Make Eye Contact: Why It Matters: A genuine smile, even from a stranger, can instantly brighten someone's mood, especially if they're feeling isolated. How to Do It: Next time you pass someone on the street, in a hallway, or at the store, offer a warm smile and hold eye contact for just a moment. Give a Genuine Compliment: Why It Matters: Most people rarely hear kind words about themselves, so a simple compliment can boost confidence and happiness. How to Do It: Whether it's their outfit, attitude, or work ethic, say something sincere and specific: “You always bring such positive energy to this place!” Hold the Door Open: Why It Matters: Small acts of courtesy remind people that they're seen and valued. How to Do It: Pause for an extra second to hold the door, even if you're in a rush. The extra moment can shift someone's entire mood. Offer Words of Encouragement: Why It Matters: Everyone faces silent battles, and a few kind words can spark hope. How to Do It: If someone seems overwhelmed, say: “You've got this. One step at a time.” It's simple but powerful. Listen Without Interrupting: Why It Matters: In a world full of noise, being truly heard can feel like a gift. How to Do It: When someone talks, put down your phone, make eye contact, and just listen. Sometimes, people don't need advice—they just need a moment of understanding. Send a Thoughtful Text: Why It Matters: A random check-in can remind someone they're not alone. How to Do It: Take 30 seconds to send a message like: “Thinking about you today—hope you're doing okay.” Let Someone Go Ahead of You in Line: Why It Matters: It's a small gesture of patience that can reduce stress for someone in a hurry. How to Do It: If someone looks rushed, wave them ahead with a smile and say, “Go ahead, no worries.” Express Gratitude: Why It Matters: Being appreciated can make someone feel seen and valued. How to Do It: Thank the cashier, the janitor, the coworker who quietly gets things done. A simple ‘thank you' goes a long way. Leave a Kind Note: Why It Matters: Unexpected positivity can turn a tough day around. How to Do It: Leave a sticky note that says “You're doing better than you think” on a colleague's desk, a bathroom mirror, or inside a book at the library. Be Patient and Kind in Traffic or Public Spaces: Why It Matters: Frustration spreads quickly—but so does kindness. How to Do It: Let someone merge, wave with a smile, or step aside without a fuss. It's easy, free, and surprisingly impactful. Why This Matters: In a world where people are overwhelmed, stressed, and often unnoticed, the smallest gestures can feel life-changing. You don't need money, influence, or even a lot of time to make someone's day better. You just need intention. Listen now and discover how you can turn someone's hard day into a hopeful one—simply by showing up with kindness. ❤️ #TacticalLiving #KindnessMatters #FirstResponderCommunity #SmallActsBigImpact

In 1958, when John Cruitt's mother died, his third-grade teacher made a small gesture of kindness that meant a great deal to him. In this animated feature from our partners at StoryCorps, he sat down with Cecile Doyle decades later to tell her how that gesture changed his life -- and in the process made a difference in her life as well. When my mom was in hospice and nearing her last days on earth, I was touched by the genuine kindness of a nursing home caregiver. After gently lifting my frail mother from her chair and tucking her into bed, the nursing assistant caressed Mom’s head while leaning over her to say, “You are so sweet.” Then she asked how I was doing. Her kindness moved me to tears then and still does today. Hers was a simple act of kindness, but it was just what I needed in that moment. It helped me to cope, knowing that in this woman’s eyes my mom wasn’t just a patient. She cared for and saw her as a person of great worth. When Naomi and Ruth were bereft after the loss of their husbands, Boaz showed kindness to Ruth by allowing her to glean leftover grain behind the harvesters. He even ordered the male harvesters to leave her alone (Ruth 2:8-9). His kindness was prompted by Ruth’s care for Naomi: “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband” (v. 11). He saw her not as a foreigner or widow but as a woman in need. God wants us to “clothe [ourselves] with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12). As God helps us, our simple acts of kindness can cheer hearts, bring hope, and inspire kindness in others.
