Episode 16: I talk with David & Mike about the re-envisioning of the planetarium in Jackson, MS! I grew up going to the planetarium so it was fun to contemplate how our view of planetariums have changed so drastically with access to new technology, new documentation of space from the newly launched James Webb Space Telescope Launch, and private citizens access to space travel. Mike Williams: Director of Russell C. Davis PlanetariumMike Williams, Jackson native and a staunch space science education advocate and self-avowed cosmic nerd. After studying Mass Communications and Graphic Design at Jackson State, Mike embarked upon a career in music production and engineering, training at Malaco records and eventually going on to work on Grammy-nominated musical projects. Along the way his professional range grew to include web development, marketing, and video and film production, including years-long creative and marketing stints with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs Global Enterprises, production on MPB's Emmy-winning children's show Ed Said, projects with the Bravo!, OWN, and BET networks, Random House and Penguin Publishing, and a host of other media entities. After living in six different states and two countries, Mike arrived back in Jackson at its planetarium as a production technician, where he would 4 years later become its director. It was then that his new mission of advocacy began to crystallize, and his vision of revitalizing the planetarium began to take shape.David Lewis: Deputy Director of the Department of Human and Cultural Services for the City of Jackson, overseeing the Cultural Division.Born and raised in Belhaven, David is undeniably passionate about the city of Jackson. His commitment to finding creative ways to bring life, energy, and awareness to the great places, spaces, and people of Jackson is unwavering. A 2015 graduate of Mississippi State University, David earned a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture. From 2016-2018, David pursued a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Jackson State University while he also worked as a Project Specialist for the Greater Jackson Arts Council. David is also a member of the Advisory Council for Downtown Jackson Partners. In his role as Deputy Director, he works with the Arts Center of Mississippi, the Russell C. Davis Planetarium, the Smith Robertson Museum, the Municipal Art Gallery, and serves as Manager of Thalia Mara Hall, where he helped usher in a 35% increase in revenue during the 2018-2019 fiscal year. David received the AIA “Friend of Architecture” award in 2018 and Visit Jackson's SUMMIT “Friend of Tourism” award in 2020. David and his wife, Mary Lee, attend church at Redeemer Jackson and reside in Belhaven with their dogs, Sam and Jack.

Anita Butler’s towering “Every Day of My Life” is one of several highlights from the otherwise unknown Richburgh Record label. Syd Nathan’s King Record label was so successful that he created the Federal subsidiary in 1950... which itself very quickly became known for jumpin’ blues from top artists like Ike Turner, James Brown’s Famous Flames, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters and Freddie King. Federal also released a few gospel LPs and 45s, including the Kingdom Bound Singers of Chicago, featuring big-voiced lead singer Bossie Morson Jr. The Kingdom Bound Singers bounced around various gospel labels through the years, including Malaco, Vee-Jay, Marco, and Skyway, and had several hits: “Somebody Touched Me,” and “I’ll be Standing” as well as “Standing by the Way,” which has been re-released on several gospel anthologies. The real attraction here, though is Morson – whose trumpet-like voice was a great fit for Federal’s stable of powerful R&B vocalists. Kingdom Bound’s 45 “I’ll Wait

According to their bio, their career spans over eighty years. They had a major influence on soul, doo top. and Motown, some of the secular music that owed much to gospel. The Soul Stirrers are the ones that brought Sam Cooke into the limelight. But the song "Divine Love" is by the Original Soul Stirrers with JJ Farley. The Label is Malaco Records. Divine Love is a beautiful gospel song. What is divine love? Divine love is when you receive God's love. The lead singing Soul Stirrer mentions in the song that when he was just about to give life up, God stopped and saved his life. So Divine Love is the love of God.(Singing)1 John 4:8 He that liveth not knowers not God; for God is love. I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to a show about The Gospel Greats.

Look at God” Darrell Luster featuring the Legends of Quartet 4 Winds Records / Malaco Music Group (release date: February 2020) www.malaco.com By Bob Marovich Bob Marovich is a gospel music historian, author, and radio host. Founder of Journal of Gospel Music blog (formally The Black Gospel Blog) and producer of the Gospel Memories Radio Show.   What if Spencer Taylor Jr. of the Highway QCs, Rev. Thomas Spann of the Brooklyn All Stars, Willie Rogers of the Soul Stirrers, JoJo Wallace and Horace Thompson of the Sensational Nightingales, and Cleave Graham of the Pilgrim Jubilees got together to sing? Further, what if they told the story of how hard the gospel highway was in the golden era? That's what you get on “Look at God,” a new composition by Darrell Luster who introduces the song. The gentlemen recall tough times traveling through the Jim Crow South, where they couldn't stay in hotels or eat in restaurants. They sold “millions of records” and “didn't make a dime.” They had “plenty to complain about back then,” notes Spann, but “look at God.” It's a heartwarming ode to the resilience of the human spirit. Check out the video, which features cameo appearances by longtime Malaco engineer Wolf Stevenson, president Tommy Couch Jr., and multi-instrumentalist Ray Braswell Jr.

Grady Champion has been captivating audiences for two decades with his high energy blues that represents who he is and where he’s from. Who he is, is a Grammy-award winning songwriter, Malaco recording artist who recently graced the cover of Living Blues Magazine and 2010 winner of the coveted International Blues Challenge. Where he’s from is the birthplace of the blues, Mississippi; the place where he was raised in a religious rural family as the youngest of 28 children. During his career as a rap artist, the blues came calling and he never looked back releasing several critically acclaimed albums which included notable songs with social commentary like “Police Man Blues” and “Children of the Corn.” He released his upbeat sophomore effort for famed Malaco records in September, “One of a Kind.”
