On this episode of Mississippi Stories, Mississippi Today Editor-At-Large Marshall Ramsey sits down with Mississippi Mass Choir Executive Director and pastor Jerry Mannery. Mannery has lived a colorful life that includes being in the first class to integrate Florence High School to being in the Navy, a Jackson Firefighter, an executive at Malaco Record, a poet, a songwriter, a pastor of We Are One United Methodist Church and founding member of the world-famous Mississippi Mass Choir, Jerry has done it all. He discusses his life, the choir, his family and how his faith has influenced it all. This is a great conversation with a Mississippi legend.
This episode tells a bit of Malaco Record Label's history and it's significance in the genre of Black Gospel Music. The company started in the 1960's focused on The Southern soul sounds featuring artists who were generating a crowd that did not necessarily hit the top radio stations or fan base. Many of the early artists were soul singers and blues singers it wasn't until Misty Blue came out and hit the charts hard then garnering the attention of this small town independent record label. As a matter of fact that one song is said to prevent the label from going into bankruptcy. In the 1970's the owners decided to lean into the Black gospel genere signing several quartet groups to their label, however the label's largest signing choir did not come on until the mid to late 1980's and became the label's largest selling group to date. And that group was none other than The Mississippi Mass Choir (Organized by the Late Frank Williams of The Williams Brothers). Song: The Sound of ChristmasSong by: The Fantastic Violinaires Keyboard player: Gail NoblesPodcast vocals: Gail NoblesThe Violinaires were a gospel group founded in 1952 in Detroit Michigan. One early member was Wilson Pickett who was with the group between 1955-1959. Following the contemporary trend of groups that switched their style to the more profitable R&B, he left to join the Falcons. Between 1965 and 2001, the Violinaires were led by Robert Blair after his death , you may have seen a variety of names. I've seen the name the Fantastic Violinaires in the 80's.I love their Christmas song, The Sound of Christmas. I play their song and the Temptations song Silent Night back to back from a playlist. I think they are the greatest Christmas songs. The Violinaires Christmas song The Sound of Christmas comes from Malaco Records album Gospel at Christmas Time. You're listen to a show about The Gospel Greats. I'm your host, Gail Nobles. Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Song title: Divine LoveSong by: The Original Soul Stirrers with JJ FarleyPodcast vocals: Gail NoblesPhoto credit: By Source, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=6253529(Singing)Today's topic is Divine Love from the Original Soul Stirrers with JJ Farley. The Soul Stirrers have been singing for a long time. According to their bio, their career spans over eighty years. They had a major influence on soul, doo top. and Motown, some of the secular music that owed much to gospel. The Soul Stirrers are the ones that brought Sam Cooke into the limelight. But the song "Divine Love" is by the Original Soul Stirrers with JJ Farley. The Label is Malaco Records. Divine Love is a beautiful gospel song. What is divine love? Divine love is when you receive God's love. The lead singing Soul Stirrer mentions in the song that when he was just about to give life up, God stopped and saved his life. So Divine Love is the love of God.(Singing)1 John 4:8 He that liveth not knowers not God; for God is love. I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to a show about The Gospel Greats.
