Greece's government just announced the creation of two new marine parks – in the Ionian and Aegean seas. The move comes a week before Athens is set to host the 9th Our Ocean Conference on April 16 and 17, which will see key stakeholders not only put a spotlight on issues related to the protection of the seas, but also present a series of concrete proposals. Bron, Anth and Kade in the good ship RM.In November we celebrate 20 years of marine parks in Victoria. Meaning, 20 years ago there were no marine parks in the state! Which begs the question what was going on all that time ago? To hear about all the moving & shaking of this pre park era we speak to Chris Smyth a doyen in the field of marine conservation in Victoria.Since the late 1980s there has been a detailed long term monitoring program in the Great Barrier Reef that is showing all kinds of signals of impact from climate change, crown of thorns seastars and much more. There are some interesting patterns emerging. We talk with Dr Mike Emslie who is a Senior Research Scientist/Coral Reef Ecologist at the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences in Townsville because he is the Project Leader for Long Term Monitoring of the reef. An increase in shark bites over the last few years has scientists researching more about the environmental factors, the sharks eye view and cases of mistaken identity that could be linked to attacks.

China and Russia have vetoed an international push to establish three new marine protected areas in Antarctic waters, at a meeting in Hobart this week. The three areas are home to millions of penguins, seabirds, fish, and whales, and as well as safekeeping that biodiversity, their protection would contribute to the fight against climate change.

It's been called the "women's budget", with $3.4 billion seeking to tackle the health, wealth and physical security of women. Following months of political crisis and outcry over sexual abuse and gender inequity, Acting Women's Minister Sussan Ley says the government "heard the call to action" from Australian women.

The Federal Government has committed to establishing the world's next big marine parks of global significance. A formal public consultation process will begin for two new marine parks covering up to 740,000 km2 of waters around Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling Islands with $5.4 million set aside in last night's Federal Budget for economic support.

A US company is flipping the script on using live animals for entertainment. It's hoping to partner with marine parks to create a more sustainable form of edu-tainment that will allow dolphins to remain in their natural habitat. Marine Parks can provide some sort of protection; however, it all depends on the types of Ocean uses that are allowed to take place such as fishing or deep-sea mining. More protections may be necessary once research in the marine park takes place.  An example of this scenario occurred in a recent study at a Marine Park in Australian Water where the banks and pinnacles that typified the undersea habitats made way for a higher than expected number of species. The high biodiversity increased the call for better protection from commercial and recreational fishing that is allowed in the Marine Park. Phil Demers is a former professional marine mammal trainer. He is best known for his relationship with a captive walrus named Smooshi that he imprinted on when she was young. Their relationship garnered the attention of  the mass media for its uniqueness.  Demers left his position citing allegations of negligent treatment of the animals and unhealthy conditions. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to the release of Smooshi the walrus, and defending himself against the relentless legal battle from his previous employer. The David & Goliath battle fought over marine parks

This episode we look at the process involved in setting up the biggest Marine Park in the State at Port Stephens and some of the lessons learnt there. Alex Bellisimo focuses on the impact of the proposed lockouts on Sydney's Northern Beaches and Bushy reckons you can't beat Drummer fishing at this time of year.

A governmental review is re-evaluating the protection zones of Australia's marine parks. This has flagged concerns for marine scientists and ecologists across the country who are worried economic and social interests will take precedence over environmental conservation.

Research is being conducted in the Bahamas to determine how far larvae disperse from within protected areas.  This work will help to determine how far away a marine park conservation benefits will extend.
