Like you, they are capable of suffering and have an interest in leading their own lives. PETA opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment business. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, investigative newsgathering and reporting, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. GASP! That was so fun! I love snorkeling! Have you been snorkeling? Snorkeling is when you swim around on the surface of the ocean, and you look at things under the water. There are so many interesting things to see in the ocean! Such as fish, turtles, jellyfish, coral, and sometimes even sharks! But the ocean is in trouble. There is too much pollution, and this is hurting the oceans. It is hurting the sea animals too. We need to protect the ocean. One way that Australia is protecting the ocean is by making two marine parks. A marine park is a "sea park", so it is like a park in the ocean! And these parks are very, very big. They are seven hundred and forty-four thousand square kilometers large! Do you know how big that is? That is the size of about twenty Taiwans! These parks are protected. That means there are rules that help make sure the water stays clean, and the animals stay safe. This is important, because if we don't protect the animals, one day they might be gone forever. So remember to protect the environment, and keep garbage out of the oceans! ________________________________ Vocabulary 澳洲的海洋公園,是指受到保護的海洋區域。 1. swim 游泳 Swimming is the best thing to do in summer. I agree. Which begs the question what was going on all that time ago? To hear about all the moving & shaking of this pre park era we speak to Chris Smyth a doyen in the field of marine conservation in Victoria.Since the late 1980s there has been a detailed long term monitoring program in the Great Barrier Reef that is showing all kinds of signals of impact from climate change, crown of thorns seastars and much more. There are some interesting patterns emerging. We talk with Dr Mike Emslie who is a Senior Research Scientist/Coral Reef Ecologist at the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences in Townsville because he is the Project Leader for Long Term Monitoring of the reef. And to end the show Jeff Maynard said something about coming as Sean Connery in his PJs (interesting image that one) and if you heard the last show last year you know what amazing marine sound waves he has in store for us... if you didn't catch the last show, check it the podcast before Sunday or just join in to be amazed!

Marine Parks can provide some sort of protection; however, it all depends on the types of Ocean uses that are allowed to take place such as fishing or deep-sea mining. More protections may be necessary once research in the marine park takes place.  An example of this scenario occurred in a recent study at a Marine Park in Australian Water where the banks and pinnacles that typified the undersea habitats made way for a higher than expected number of species. The high biodiversity increased the call for better protection from commercial and recreational fishing that is allowed in the Marine Park. Phil Demers is a former professional marine mammal trainer. He is best known for his relationship with a captive walrus named Smooshi that he imprinted on when she was young. Their relationship garnered the attention of  the mass media for its uniqueness.  Demers left his position citing allegations of negligent treatment of the animals and unhealthy conditions. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to the release of Smooshi the walrus, and defending himself against the relentless legal battle from his previous employer.
