This is the political season to be thankful for small favors of optimism, and in this edition of Scheer Intelligence, host Robert Scheer and guest Joe Lauria, editor of the Consortium News website, are excited to have found a gift of striking significance to what remains of the practice of serious journalism on the internet. It is Donald Trump’s delivery on a promise in his inauguration address that “After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional federal efforts to restrict free expression, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all censorship and bring back free speech to America.” What Trump is referring to is summarized in his executive order, “Restoring Free Speech and Ending Federal Censorship,” asserting: “Over the last four years, the previous administration trampled free speech rights by censoring Americans’ speech on online platforms, often by exerting substantial coercive pressure on third parties, such as social media companies, to moderate, deplatform, or otherwise suppress speech that the Federal Government did not approve.” Under the guise of combatting ‘misinformation,’ `disinformation’ and ‘malinformation,’ the Federal Government infringed on the constitutionally protected speech rights of American citizens across the United States.” Despite its presence In the egregious pile of Donald Trumps otherwise deeply frightening Executive Orders assaulting logic and decency, both Scheer and Lauria, who edit internet publications that have been targeted in this manner, argue that this particular executive order is a gem of sharp brilliance that should not be shunned for the

Rhode Island faces a growing shortage of primary care doctors. Medical specialists make more money than primary care doctors, and the economic conditions for physicians are better in Massachusetts and Connecticut. This is why a legislative panel is studying whether it would help to create a state medical school at the University of Rhode Island. There are a host of other healthcare-related challenges in the state, including the difficult fiscal outlook for some hospitals and Rhode Island's heavy reliance on public payers like Medicare and Medicaid. State Senator Pamela Lauria, a Barrington Democrat, has a front-row seat on these issues since she's a nurse practitioner for Coastal Medical, a primary care practice serving more than 100,000 patients. Lauria is also co-chair of the legislative commission studying the potential of a possible state med school at URI. So what is the freshman senator's prescription for improving healthcare in Rhode Island? As an East Bay resident, how does Lauria assess Governor McKee's performance on the Washington Bridge issue? And as a Democrat and longtime gun safety activist, what is her explanation for why Donald Trump remains a competitive presidential candidate? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with state Senator Pamela Lauria.
Welcome to Lunacy; where we discern the sacred from the insane and admit that whether we like it or not, we are all profoundly affected by the cycles of the moon.Today on LUNACY, I talk to my new friend Caulen Lauria about Restorative Wellness and Extreme Sports. In this episode, I freeze my nipples off at -200°, get my elbow electrocuted, and get blasted in the face with hot red light. One for the books. : )Caulen and I dig deep into why restorative and preventative wellness works so well. We talk about the Cryochamber and its benefits after I stand in there for five minutes. We discuss the benefits of PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) after using it on my elbow. Naturally, we talk about the cold plunge and why that works, as well as several other modern therapies at his facility, Cryobodyworks in Austin, TX.Then we dig into Caulen's love of terrifying, but invigorating sports like Wing-Suiting and Superbiking. This leads to a philosophical discussion about the benefits of living dangerously without being a danger, and the profound benefits of, and need for, fierce love in this world. This week, Les chats with Dan Lauria and Patty McCormack about the Off-Broadway premiere of Just Another Day, a play about wonderful old friends who may not even know each other, but who relive and celebrate a life together...maybe. In Just Another Day, a comedy writer and a sophisticated poet in their seventies meet daily on a park bench to exchange wits and barbs, and wax nostalgic about old movies, all the while trying to figure out how they know – and love – each other. At least for that day. Directed by Eric Krebs, the two-member cast is Dan Lauria, who also wrote the show, alongside Patty McCormack. Between them, Lauria and McCormack have over 100 years of live theatrical experience, as well as over 150 television shows and films. Dan Lauria has appeared as a guest star in over seventy television episodic programs and more than twenty Movie Of The Week productions plus a score of motion picture credits. Dan is a very familiar face to the off-off, off and regional theatre scene having performed, written or directed over 50 professional stage productions. Dan is most recognized as the Dad on the highly acclaimed, Emmy winning, ABC television show, “The Wonder Years.” Patty McCormack brings to her role more than seven decades of stage, screen and television appearances. From her Oscar and Golden Globe nominated performance in The Bad Seed to work in the Oscar and Golden Globe Nominated Frost/Nixon and The Master; starring in her own television series “Peck's Bad Girl” to creating memorable characters on television favorites from “Dallas” to the “The Soprano's”; and her extensive theatrical work beginning with a Broadway debut at the age of six in Touchstone starring Ossie Davis. Patty McCormack brings her diverse range of talent to every role she plays. We talk about writing, acting, their connection to live theater, and much more. If you're in the New York area and want to catch the show (and you should) tickets are $49-$69 ($99 premium) and may be obtained at www.theater555.venuetix.com.
In this episode of the Birth Like a Mammal™ podcast, Lindsay sits down with Kristine Lauria, an international midwife who currently works for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). She specializes in high-risk maternity care in low-resource settings and is passionate in her support of breech birth, bodily autonomy in medical decision making and is a staunch advocate for undisturbed, physiologic birth. She has attended over 5000 births in more than 25 countries around the world, including many sets of twins and triplets. When not in the field with MSF, she is an instructor with Breech Without Borders and is also their Global Midwifery Director. She lives in Michigan's upper peninsula with her dogs. Earlier this year, Kristine went viral on Instagram for supporting a triplet home birth. Lindsay was so impressed with Kristine's energy and awareness illustrated in the video, she immediately reached out and asked Kristine for an interview. During this discussion, Kristine gives us a replay of the aforementioned triplet birth as well as an additional triplet birth she had attended previously. She gives us insight into her midwifery apprenticeship and her work abroad in third world countries. Lindsay and Kristine discuss disruption to mammalian birth, where the responsibility lies when it comes to birth, especially at home, and how *talking* in itself is an intervention during labor. Kristine shares her journey to midwifery, her own experience birthing her son 20+ years ago, and how pervasive the lack of knowledge regarding how mammalian birth functions is within obstetrics. Lindsay labels Kristine "an authentic midwife" to describe how true to the definition of "midwife" Kristine's practice is. This is a fantastic episode to tune into if you are considering home birth, or perhaps experienced a reproduction of obstetrics from a licensed midwife during your baby's home birth. Kristine is the real deal.Notable Quotes from Kristine:"She knew that this was her show, she had to do this......(she) took full responsibility for birth and did not see me as her savior.""I consider talking an intervention at a birth, because it is. And every time you open you mouth, you are taking a little bit away form that person's experience.""It's THEIR show, it's not MY show.""So, then is it any wonder why there is such a huge movement of people moving away form even home birth midwives and just deciding 'well i guess we better do this ourselves because we can't have what we want'?" Kristine Lauria can be found @globalmidwife64 on Instagram and you can follow her travels and work at www.midwifewithoutboundaries.wordpress.com. Lindsay and Birth Like a Mammal™ would also like to give a nod of appreciation to Amber, the Mother of triplets who shared her babies' birth worldwide and allowed Kristine to share her story with us. You won't find an obstetrician anywhere in the United States who will birth triplets vaginally in the hospital, but today you'll hear the story of traditional midwife Kristine Lauria who welcomed them at home with the respect and reverence for birth every woman deserves. Kristine witnesses some of the most "high risk" births around the world in her midwifery work for Doctors Without Borders. She has attended over 500 breech, twin, and triplets births! In this episode, you will hear the story of a mother in her 7th pregnancy birthing three babies at home as told by Kristine. We discuss what it means to be a traditional midwife, what happens in a triplet homebirth, the dying art of midwifery skills, and how to manually extract a baby at home. You'll hear how the mother's own mother received the first baby and how this mother avoided preterm birth by leaving the hospital AMA after an episode of bleeding and went on to naturally birth her babies at 38 weeks with perfect APGAR scores! This story is a beautiful example of the true midwifery model of care, a fiercely dedicated mother, and a birth team who deeply trust the innate process of physiologic birth regardless of the number of babies or their positions. Welcome to Lunacy; where we discern the sacred from the insane and admit that whether we like it or not, we are all profoundly affected by the cycles of the moon.Today on LUNACY we are CELEBRATING VICTORY!!! BIG TIME! I meet up again with my friend, funny man, and brother in arms, Tony Lauria to debrief after the Nevada County Supervisors voted NO to reopening a Toxic Gold Mine in our home town. This is important because it demonstrates what a community can accomplish when we set our minds to it, and it serves as a model for democracy and protest moving forward. Featured in this episode are speeches from several highly intelligent humans who showed up to protest the opening of this abominable Mine. I welcome your thoughts on this episode! Kristine Lauria is a CPM working almost entirely abroad nowadays, but her skillset is occasionally required and called upon in the United States, and this exact set of circumstances arose a few weeks ago. Kristine sat with a powerful birthing woman carrying triamniotic-trichorionic triplets, who came vaginally, in a variety of different positions, including both cephalic and breech. In this short episode, Kristine shares the birth story. Kristine will be an instructor and speaker at the 2024 Born Free Twins-Breech conference alongside international keynote speakers Mmatshilo Motsei, PhD, and Doña Angelina Martinez Miranda, Carol Gautschi, CPM, from the PNW, the team from Breech Without Borders, the team from Spinning Babies, Stu Fischbein, MD, Tracey Vogel, MD, Hermine Hayes-Klein, JD, and many more presenters and speakers. Be sure to register soon, as spots are filling up quickly, and those who register earlier rather than later save money!www.BornFreeTwinsBreech.com
One of my favourtite episodes, talking to Kristine was incredible. What a woman. Working with some of the highest risk women in the world in refugee camps amongst other very low/impoverished places where c-section rates are only 5% and the whole scope of midwifery care is used. Whilst she is also a registered midwife, former traditional midwife, in the United States where she recently supported her approx. 10th set of triplets at home. Kristine doesn't practice as a primary midwife in the states but she shares her incredible adventures and tales via her instagram and blog. Additionally, she works with Breech Without Borders, supporting the lost skills of breech vaginal birth to midwifes and doctors. An incredible episode!!

“Nobody was looking for the girls, except my family" -- On December 29th, 1999, as high schooler Ashley Freeman turns 16, she invites her best friend Lauria Bible for a fun sleepover, and what would happen to the entire family during that night, would become a 20-year mystery, involving the cartel, local rings, and even the entire police department as a suspect, a mystery that only Lauria's parents would be able to solve: where are the missing girls? David Berkowitz "Son Of Sam" Serial Killer [Documentary] Berkowitz was born in 1953 and reared in the Bronx by foster parents after being abandoned for adoption. He enlisted in the Army when he was 18 years old. After being honorably discharged, he returned to New York and began working at the Bronx Post Office in 1976. Four months later, the assassinations began. Berkowitz was 23 at the time of the first murders. Berkowitz has been linked to over a dozen shootings, including: Jody Valenti and Donna Lauria in the Bronx (1976); Carl Denaro and Rosemary Keenan in Queens (1976); Donna DeMasi and Joanne Lomino in Queens (1976); Christine Freund and John Diel in Queens (1977); Virginia Voskerichian in Manhattan (1977); Valentina Suriani and Alexander Esau in the Bronx (1977); Judy Placido and Sal Lupo in Queens (1977); and Robert Violante and Stacy Moskowitz in Brooklyn (1977). Lauria, Freund, Voskerichian, Suriani, Esau, and Moskowitz all died from their injuries. Others were disabled and blinded. New York newspapers first christened Berkowitz the ".44 Caliber Killer," after his murder weapon of choice. Later, he placed a letter addressed to "Son of Sam" at one of the crime scenes. Berkowitz was arrested in Yonkers on August 10, 1977, while sitting in his automobile outside his home. He pleaded guilty to six counts of murder on May 8, 1978, and was sentenced to life in prison. Berkowitz said at the time that the crimes were motivated by Sam, a demonic entity that resided in his neighbor's black Labrador. David Berkowitz Son Of Sam Serial Killer Documentary

The Episode was made possible by BIRTHFIT | WeNatalKristine Lauria is back on the podcast! Kristine wasn't able to attend the 2023 Born Free Twins-Breech Conference. So I figured...why not bring her onto the podcast to fill in some gaps around breech birth? After nearly two decades attending births in the States, she took her skills abroad working with Médecins Sans Frontières (aka Doctors Without Borders). This is where the magic of Kristine is obvious. She has attended hundreds of breech births due to the lack of access to operating rooms in a variety of resource-poor settings in which she has worked. As a result, she brings some deeply insightful knowledge into how and when to intervene while attending vaginal breech births! If you missed out on this year's conference, 2024 is going to be bigger and better!
