This week Carla and Joy complete their two-part deep dive into Iran's complex social and political landscape in an effort to contextualize the protest movement that has ignited over the past several weeks. In this episode, they turn the mirror around to the United States. How can leftists best stand in solidarity with folks on the ground in Iran? How can we balance the need to amplify the Iranian peoples' grievances with their government, while also rejecting US intervention and sanctions? The duo answer these questions and more on this episode.Have thoughts/comments/reactions to this episode? We'd love to hear from you! Maryam became well known for her critique of the treatment of women under Islamic regimes. We talk about her family history and her views on the right to speak up and appreciating the freedom we have in the west to voice our opinion. The murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed have sparked passionate conversations within many marginalized communities about how insidious systems of oppression can be, especially in this day and age. I'm speak with Maryam Namazie — the British-Iranian secularist and human rights activist often credited for making the ex-Muslim movement the global phenomenon it is today — about systemic racism, parallels between Islamic and White supremacy, showing solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter protesters, and her own personal experience being beaten by the NYPD and thrown in jail during a peaceful protest in the early 1990s.Links discussed:Washington Post repository of research/data on systemic racism: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/opinions/systemic-racism-police-evidence-criminal-justice-system/Why it's impossible to calculate the percentage of legitimate police shootings (Radley Balko): https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2016/07/14/why-its-impossible-to-calculate-the-percentage-of-police-shootings-that-are-legitimate/Ali's LetterWiki exchange with Matt Thornton on systemic racism and police shootings: https://letter.wiki/conversation/766#letter_2412Maryam on Twitter: @MaryamNamazie

Dissent within minority communities is often not only badly reported in the media but is actually actively silenced under the guise of political correctness. On the final episode of this season of Backchat, Podcast Editor Mihir Joshi talks to Maryam Namazie from the One Law for All campaign group. They discuss honour based violence, blasphemy and the popular revolt against the Iranian Regime that has been raging for the past year.
In recent years there's been an attempt by some on the left to shift the parameters of 'acceptable' thought and discussion. Instead of disagreeing with speakers or the points they are making, there's an increasing tendency to try to prevent those speakers from being given a platform at all. To take one example, on university campuses, 'progressive' students have literally rioted, set things on fire, and physically assaulted other students and speakers on numerous occasions because the speaker or topic under discussion is deemed 'offensive', 'far right', 'extremist', etc, etc. Why is this the case, does it amount to censorship, and what are the implications for free speech? We discuss these points in this episode. Also, did Epstein really kill himself? Hint - we have no idea. Please SUBSCRIBE, and GIVE US A GOOD REVIEW AND RATING if you liked the show! Zij is vrouwenrechtenactiviste.
Just returning from our national convention in San Francisco, we hear the Moment of Bedlam at the annual Nonprayer Breakfast and hear parts of speeches by actor John de Lancie, Secular Coalition for America director Larry Decker, U.S. Representative (Ca.) Jared Huffman, and comedian Leighann Lord. After hearing Dan Barker's song "The Freethought Blues," we talk with Maryam Namazie, who is organizing the "International Sharia, Segregation & Secularism" conference in London this month.
Welcome to our coverage of the evening portion of the 2016 Reason Rally. Magician and comedian Penn Jillette sang some songs and told the heart wrenching and courageous story of singing contestant Carolina Pena. Civil Rights activist Maryam Namazie gave a stirring speech about the struggles atheists face in the rest of the world. I also spoke with Road to Reason host Scott Maddox about why he came to the rally. Anthony Pinn, a professor and author, later reminded the crowd that the rally is a celebration. Actor Annabelle Gurwitch introduced Lt Coln. Tom Gray who related the struggles of being an atheist in the military. Mexican diplomat Andres Roemer passionately spoke of the global interconnect society and international language of science. The crowd grew and the excitement built as the day went on.From creative signs and t-shirts to lively discussions Rally goers expressed themselves in a wide variety of ways. The flying spaghetti monster was on hand to take pictures. And even I couldn't help but get caught up in the excitement and sense of community. That is it for this episode. In the next installment we take a look at the conclusion of the main rally with David Silverman, Bill Maher, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and exclusive chats with Aron Ra and Shelley Segal. Maryam Namazie is a true pioneer of the growing ex-Muslim movement. The Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain (CEMB), which she started more than a decade ago, now has thousands of members worldwide and assists hundreds of ex-Muslims every year. In 2015, the CEMB launched the unexpectedly viral #ExMuslimBecause movement, and last year, Maryam’s organization hosted the largest gathering of ex-Muslims to date, in London. She will be joining us on the podcast to talk about her work; the progress she has seen and obstacles she has faced over the last decade or two; and where the movement stands in today’s polarized political climate. Ibrahim Abdallah is the co-founder of Muslimish, an organization that provides a safe, supportive, and open-minded environment for the exchange of ideas between former and questioning Muslims. He is a firebrand ex-Muslim activist who is known for his fiery speeches and no-holds-barred criticisms of Islam, the Quran, and all religion in general. Speakers at Muslimish conferences have included our own Ali Rizvi and previous Secular Jihadists guests Sarah Haider, Alishba Zarmeen, and Noura Embabi (former Muslimish president). On June 23, Muslimish will hold its annual summer conference in New York City, featuring Maryam Namazie and Ali Rizvi. He joined us in this episode to discuss his organization, what "Muslim" means in the twenty-first century (this part got a little heated), why Islam may be more dangerous because it is a more sophisticated and "intelligent" religion than Christianity, and of course, some of our favorite absurdities in Islamic scripture. When U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) courageously resisted Trump’s “smear against women” Tweet that she learned about during a Congressional bible study, Annie Laurie told Gillibrand: “The bible is even worse than Trump!” After hearing Iranian-born feminist and atheist activist Maryam Namazie’s acceptance speech for the Hank Zumach “Freedom From Fundamentalist Religion” award, we listen to jazz singer Susan Hofer perform the (freethinker) Frank Loesser song “What Are You Doing New Year’s?” that she sang (accompanied by Dan Barker on the piano) during FFRF’s December 20 Winter Solstice party at Freethought Hall.
We talk to Maryam Namazie about Ahmad Shamlou's In This Dead End, which describes the suppression and violence that occurred in Iran after religious leaders took power in the wake of the country's revolution in 1979.
Maryam Namazie has said, "The Internet is doing to Islam what the printing press did in the past to Christianity." Just 30 years after Salman Rushdie was forced into hiding by a fatwa on his head for writing a novel, there is now polling from Muslim-majority countries revealing millions of atheists, agnostics, and secularists, growing rapidly. In reaction, Saudi Arabia has declared that atheism is terrorism, and alarmed talk show hosts across the region are warning about this wave. Bootleg copies and Arabic-version PDFs of books like "The God Delusion" have been downloaded tens of millions of times. Are we witnessing the beginnings of an Enlightenment in the Muslim world? If so, who are its Voltaires and Rousseaus? And what forces is it up against? We talk about all this and more in this week's SJME. Listen to our conversation. Hear moving excerpts of speeches at the Conference on Freedom of Conscience and Expression which took place in London in July, including Maryam Namazie, Bonya Ahmed, Zineb El Rhazoui, Mohammed Alkhadra, A.C. Grayling and Richard Dawkins. After enjoying the atheist song “Like Moths To The Flame” by the Tasmanian group Mama K and the Big Love, we talk with Óscar Pineda, vice president of Guatemala Humanists about their exciting new billboard and video campaign raising the awareness of freethinkers in Central America.
The Ten Commandments at a Pennsylvania high school is finally moved! An Arkansas school district considers dropping prayer after FFRF complains. We celebrate Gloria Steinem's birthday by hearing part of her speech about the "taliban" in politics and Catholic bishops' opposition to women's rights. Staff attorney Sam Grover tells us about FFRF's newest lawsuit challenging a Texas judge who forces his courtroom to engage in Christian prayer. Then we speak with Iranian-born feminist, atheist, and human-rights activist Maryam Namazie, spokesperson for "One Law For All" and host of "Bread and Roses" TV show, who will tell us about the July 22-23 London conference on "Freedom of Conscience and Expression."
Today’s episode is a collection of short interviews I did with some of the speakers and attendees of last week’s Women in Secularism 4 conference in Arlington, VA. Women in Secularism is a yearly conference put on by the Center for Inquiry where a diverse group of women talk about what it means to be a secular woman, not just in theory but in practice. This year’s convention featured conversations about why there aren’t many out secular women, what it means to matter, and a heated yet still interesting discussion about the safe space debate. [Sorry for all the sound effects. Michael's neighbours were drilling and hammering, I was recording in my basement for the first (and last) time..where it turns out the mic picks up the sound of water going through the pipes] **** Here's my chat with Michael Sherlock - activist, atheist, author. We delved into some pretty interesting conversations....about 'befriending' bigots...jihadists..islamists...kkk members...people on the far right. Where do we draw the line on who we can and can't consider a 'friend'? We talk in some depth about BLM, Milo, Tommy Robinson, touch on Michael's stepping down from Vive Charlie (far-rightish leaning "atheist" magazine)...we discuss his views on Maryam Namazie, who's kind of become a controversial figure among many atheists. The government has launched an inquiry into the role of sharia councils in the UK. The councils are able to provide advice to Muslims who voluntarily choose to use them to resolve civil and family disputes. But human rights campaigners have become increasingly concerned about the rights of women who access the councils. The Home Office said it would examine claims that sharia councils may be working in a "discriminatory and unacceptable way", issuing divorces that are unfair to women, contrary to the teachings of Islam. However, it will also seek out examples of best practice among sharia councils. So what is the real picture? How can we separate the facts from the misconceptions? Ernie Rea explores the role of sharia councils in the UK with Dr Amra Bone, who is on the panel for the Sharia Council based in Birmingham Central Mosque; Dr Samia Bano, an expert in Muslim family law in the UK at SOAS, University of London; and Maryam Namazie, a human rights activist from the campaign group 'One Law for All'. Fresh off a great interview, it’s time for some Tommenting! Lots of people asked if I was going to talk about Sam Harris and Omer Aziz, and while I’m definitely not doing a full review like I did with Maryam Namazie, I want to at least talk about some broad themes. So I do that, … Continue reading AS224: Tommentary → The post AS224: Tommentary appeared first on Atheistically Speaking.

We kick off our the first episode of our show with activist Maryam Namazie. Yes, it's *that* episode that got us banned from YouTube twice.
Last year I lost an entire 90 minute interview with Toronto-based blogger and activist Eiynah. Since then, I’ve bought a separate recorder to ensure I have at least two copies of each interview! Eiynah (@NiceMangos) is back and she talks to me about the first episode of her new podcast, Polite Conversations with Maryam Namazie. It was taken down from Youtube twice for no good reason. Rather Kafkaesque. We touch on how ex-Muslims and moderate Muslims are being silenced by the Western left and popular media. We talk about feminism, too! Today I’ve got some more Tommentary for you. It amazes me that someone could condone how … Continue reading AS197: Goldsmiths Followup; Radicalizing Muslims → The post AS197: Goldsmiths Followup; Radicalizing Muslims appeared first on Atheistically Speaking.
By supporting fundamentalists, the Left simply chooses one camp in a political struggle without acknowledging it. Maryam Namazie, a trenchant campaigner against religious fundamentalism, made this observation last week during a fraught lecture at Goldsmiths, University of London. It would turn out to be pertinent. Namazie’s appearance at Goldsmiths was causing trouble before the event had even begun. The day before the event, the university’s Islamic Society (ISOC) let it be known that they considered Namazie to be a “renowned Islamophobe” whose presence on campus would cause ISOC members to feel “extremely uncomfortable,” and constitute a violation of their “safe space.” Such a reaction was tiresome but unsurprising. Goldsmiths’ ISOC is, after all, an Islamist-led organization, dominated by people who hold precisely the kind of beliefs Namazie spends her days attacking. When expressions of Islamist self-pity failed to get her disinvited, ISOC members resorted to childish disruption of the talk itself, giggling, talking, heckling, and interfering with her power-point as she tried to speak. The video of the event (which can be seen here) makes … The post The Shame and the Disgrace of the Pro-Islamist Left appeared first on Quillette.
