You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life inspired by the ancient tradition of Stoic Philosophy from Greece and Rome. I'm your host, Justin Vacula. This is episode 92 – David Silverman on Injustice. Dave speaks about injustice he sees from the political left adding his personal experience recovering from #metoo allegations he argues are unsubstantiated. Dave also talks about guilt, the danger of groupthink, depression, anger, and friendship. I've been meaning to record this episode for some time following Dave speaking out after months of silence. Initially, and still to this day, some see Dave as an abuser, but after reading his side of the story complemented with testimony from others, I see no good reason to believe the accusations levied against Dave. David and I started to talk about the concept of justice, but the conversation went more into his personal story and insights reflecting on his time as president of American Atheists and chair of the 2012 Reason Rally. Dave was one of the most -- if not the most -- public-facing individuals challenging religion and advocating for church/state separation with his brand of firebrand atheism even appearing on Fox News challenging Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly. Years ago, Dave and I butted heads. He was deep into social justice and feminism, but now the situation is quite different as Dave has left the far left. He's apologized for his past behavior and I'm happy to accept his apology. We chatted for more than an hour, but unfortunately some audio was lost due to some technical problems. In this episode of Point of Inquiry, cohost Leighann Lord talks with fellow comic Ian Harris. Besides being a comedian, Harris is a voice actor, writer, director, and MMA trainer. He is also an outspoken atheist and skeptic who confronts magical thinking and religion in his comedy. In 2019, Leighann Lord and Harris joined forces and performed their mainstage show at Dragon Con. That show, dubbed “The Science and Fiction Comedy Show,” blended nerdom (it's Drgaon Con after all!), atheism, skepticism, and science. In this engaging interview with Lord, Harris tells us about what it's like to perform skeptical comedy for audiences and lets us in on the type of audience that gives the best laughs.  Harris explains how he effectively uses his comedy to teach people skeptical and critical thinking.  He's seen certain topics, such as climate change, become politicized and divorced from science. It’s his hope to rectify that with his comedy. Lord and Harris also dive into the observation that even within the atheist community, many hold onto their own "religious" beliefs and not everyone in the community is a critical thinker or skeptic. They then discuss the resulting schism or gap that's been created. You can follow Leighann on twitter @LeighannLord. October 21, 2018 What is an atheist issue? American Atheists redefines what is an atheists issue. We will challenge the status quo. In doing so we will lay out a plan to fight for equality and the true separation of religion and government. If you are not happy with the way things are then the time is now to make a change.  Jim G. Helton is the National Field Organizer for American Atheists. After attending the 2012 Reason Rally, he co-founded the Tri-State Freethinkers and was appointed American Atheists’ Kentucky State Director. Under his leadership, Tri-State Freethinkers adopted the highway in front of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter and led a protest that received international attention. He played a key role in eliminating Gideon’s bible distributions in public schools and removing abstinence-only sex education. Mr. Helton’s activism at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter landed him appearances in the 2017 documentary film Bill Nye: Science Guy and the forthcoming documentary We Believe in Dinosaurs. He has been quoted in countless news outlets, including The New York Times, Miami Herald, and Washington Post. He is a fixture in local media and has given interviews for international television specials in France, Switzerland, and elsewhere. As National Field Organizer, Mr. Helton works with affiliates, local partners, and state directors to challenge religious privilege and fight to protect church/state separation at the local level by building coalitions around specific issue campaigns, including medically accurate sex education, LGBT non-discrimination ordinances, and religious exemptions.

We travel to Washington learning about the pre-rally coverage, how the event was marketed, the purpose and attendence of the advocacy days, and what to we have in store in future shows. This year's rally aimed to show support for the secular viewpoint, advocate that reason and scientific evidence should be the basis for government decisions, and show the political clout of the secular and atheist community. The lowdown crew traveled to D.C. in the first of an eight part series on the rally. Check it out."The Reason Rally was sponsored by a coalition of secular groups including American Atheists, American Humanist Association, and Center for Inquiry. Kelly Damerow and David Silverman spearheaded a leadership group from all walks of life and many different interests all coming together for common causes. We arrived in America's capitol on Friday afternoon, third of June, a day ahead of the rally, before most, but behind the ardent activist who made their voices known lobbying to congress. June 2nd and 3rd were advocacy days in which 275 participants met with legislators on Capitol Hill to lobby in support of evidence-based sex education programs and the REYHA Act introduced by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). They advocated for federally funded sex education that should be comprehensive, not based on abstinence-only, an approach that, the organizers feel, has been proven to be ineffective.Friday night saw Baba Brinkman’s Rap Guide to Evolution, a performance exactly as the name suggests. The pre-rally days also included a secular bus tour, a Robert Ingersoll walking tour, and a VIP Dinner were the attendees could mingle with their favorite secular celebrities.”In the next episode we jump straight into the Rally. I’ll interview the Thinking Atheist Seth Andrews, we take a look at some crazy religious anti-rally protestors, Victor Harris waxes poetical about Christian oppression, and Comedian Ricky Gervais thinks ignorance is a pain in the ass.Sources:Fox News, “Americans Without Religion Lobby for Political Influence.” Accessed June 17, 2016. http://video.foxnews.com/v/4927893511... Raised Primitive Baptist, along with her identical twin sister, she now helps mentor others in overcoming their childhood indoctrination by promoting and encouraging critical thinking, expanded reading and more importantly gaining scientific understanding. In that regard she is currently, along with her twin sister Crystal Hughes, developing a nonprofit organization that promotes these ideals and hopes to give people like her – those breaking free from their religious chains in Southern Ohio and Appalachia – a place to congregate and feel at home. It was a real pleasure and a lot of fun to talk with Letha.

Cass Midgley and Dr. Bob Pondillo interview an anonymous guest who chose to go by the name Homo Sapien. He’s 52 years old, pretty much a life long atheist, he’s Canadian, and yet he still isn’t out of the closet as non-religious. This conversation is not about our usual subject—the trauma of leaving one’s faith. But it is about the toxic effects that religion has on society as it suppresses curiosity, creativity, and personal accountability. Mr. Sapien is a brilliant thinker and a great conversationalist, so Bob and I have a great time. This type of episode is as close as we’re ever going to get to a Sam Harris type podcast. Before we get into our talk with Homo, I want to read a couple of emails that came in this week. I get a lot of emails each week like these and I apologize that some get read on the air and some don’t. It’s not because you’re email wasn’t great; it really is just that these came in a time when I didn’t like any of the monologues I’d written and I these were great so I’m gonna read them.  The first one is from Matt Schmidt. He writes, Cass- I am just wanting to write a quick email to you about your podcast.  I have only been listening for about 6-8 months now, but I have found myself connecting to so many of your guest’s experiences.  I’m currently in the process of deconstructing myself and have been traveling through this new world for just over a year.  Started my church experience in the belly of my mother and been part of the Church for over 40 years.  As I listen to the many life stories told on your show, there have been many occasions that someone expressed a feeling of confusion followed an anger of betrayal by the narrative of Christianity, which we have taken to accept as reality or even a new-found freedom from the release all the human designed rules and constraints Christianity has taught our wholes lives.  I cannot thank you enough for creating this vehicle to provide reassurance that we are not alone in this process and the feeling and experiences we are going through are not unique. Everyone has a story…. Keep up the good work. Matt Schmidt “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ― Albert Einstein This next one wanted to remain anonymous: Dear Cass and Bob, I just wanted to send you guys an email and thank you for the wonderful work that you guys are doing just by sharing the podcast with people. I can't tell you how much it has helped me come to terms with my own godlessness amongst the deeply Christian community in which I live. See, I grew up Catholic and it wasn't until about six months ago that I finally acknowledged the fact that I was agnostic and likely had been all my life. Now, I'm nineteen and living with my parents who are going through diaconate training and becoming increasingly more theological by the day. They don't know that I no longer subscribe to the belief that there is any god, let alone the Christian God that is just waiting to send me to hell for being queer, so I listen to your podcast to and from church every Sunday to distract from the situation. Please know that it genuinely helps with the feeling of loneliness that comes with being the only atheist in a church, and I don't know if I would still be sane without it. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Kind regards, Anonymous P.S., if you guys ever want an interview with a queer ex-Catholic college student who is still going to a very southern Texas church with a future deacon father, let me know. I would be happy to throw my two cents into the immeasurable amount of advice and experience your podcast has put into the world. So, without further ado, this is our talk with Homo Sapien, a mutual friend of a dear friend of the show who has promoted our podcast everywhere he goes, Bob Barnes up in Canada. He’s taken Bob and I to dinner, he passed EA Podcast business cards at the Reason Rally. He’s a great guy, and he introduced us to our guest today. So here’s our talk with Dr. Homo Sapien.  We taped this conversation on December 4th, 2016. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Please subscribe to our podcast, and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts. In this episode, Bo Bennett and Kim Ellington speak with world-renowned artist and humanist science fiction author Scott Burdick about how his travels led him to a humanistic world view, and how his latest science-fiction novel, Nihala, explores many humanistic issues. Scott's bio from Amazon.com: Scott Burdick studied art at Chicago's American Academy of Art and then film and writing at Chicago's Columbia College, where his short story "Fear" was published in the Hair Trigger anthology while a student. Burdick subsequently illustrated covers for TSR's Dungeon and Dragon magazines, as well as working on the development team for Dreamworks' animated feature film, Spirit (uncredited). Unsatisfied with the prospect of living in Chicago or LA and working for others, Scott and his wife, fellow artist Susan Lyon, moved to rural NC in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, as a home base between traveling extensively across the world--researching many cultures and indigenous tribes for his artworks, novels, and short stories. Burdick's paintings are widely shown in galleries and museums across the country, and he's directed three independent documentaries on religion--In God we Trust?, Sophia Investigates the Good News Club, and In Reason We Trust, (featuring Richard Dawkins, Adam Savage of Myth Busters, Eddie Izzard, Dan Barker, Annie Laurie Gaylor, Lawrence Krause, Greg Graffin of the band Bad Religion, and a dozen other prominent free-thinkers from the 2012 Reason Rally in Washington DC.) Many of the themes of his films overlap those of his novels--religion, science, philosophy, the direction of technology, and morality. Nihala description from Amazon.com: Steven Hawking recently warned that artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to the human species. And yet, how to stop such a singularity without halting scientific advancement itself? Some claim that humanity should abandon the enslavement of technology altogether for a return to nature and a way of life more in sync with our psychological needs. But who is to say exactly how much technology is too much? And who will ensure none crosses some arbitrary line of demarcation? Kayla Nighthawk, crippled and orphaned from birth, has been raised in the theocratic society of Potemia. Hundreds of years have passed since the Neo-Luddite War cut Potemia off from the rest of mankind. The Founder predicted that sciencecraft would destroy those on the Outside, but what if the pursuit of scientific advancement has created wonders beyond imagining? Will Kayla risk leaving her homeland in search of the forbidden knowledge that might cure her—even at the cost her immortal soul? Through a series of dialogues with the strange creatures she encounters, Kayla's religious convictions come under attack. Her search for the divine, an absolute basis for morality, and the meaning of existence itself becomes a matter of life or death for Kayla—as well as for all of humanity. This is the history of the next millennia. An epic tale of technology and the backlash against it. A journey of war, love, revenge, and heartbreak—a philosophical adventure story.
