We start with some good news. As reported in The Telegraph, Cambridge Constabulary have announced that they will be taking no further action against the FSU member who used the word “pikey” on the phone to the police while reporting two men who were threatening her and her family. Meanwhile, “Rainbow Refuseniks” is the name given to a growing group of footballers who have either refused to wear rainbow-coloured jerseys and armbands to signify their support for the Football Association's Rainbow Laces campaign or have written religious messages on them. To date, they include Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi and Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui. Our Executive Communications Officer, Freddie Attenborough, has written more broadly about the football world's war on free speech in The Critic. We move on to discuss the state of debate in the UK, following a debate at the Oxford Union, which is now being investigated by counter-terror police. The motion was: “This house believes Israel is an apartheid state responsible for genocide”. As Jan explains, the video of the debate is an unedifying spectacle but it is also revealing, especially in a context where certain speakers were claiming they ought not even be there to debate the issue. By contrast, FSU member Connie Shaw is heroically standing up for free speech, having been suspended from hosting a student radio show on Leeds Student Radio after she was accused of breaching her student union's code of conduct. This followed her expressing gender critical views and interviewing controversial figures for her podcast. The Telegraph reports how the FSU is helping Connie to appeal the student union's decision and has called for the investigation findings to be quashed. We stay within the FSU family to discuss the research of Ben Jones, our Director of Case Management. Ben spoke at the National Secular Society's members' day about the experiences of ex-muslims in the UK. As he said in his talk, his findings were shocking and “shouldn't happen in any country, let alone the UK”. Finally, FSU members have just a few hours left to sign-up for our Online Christmas Review on Tuesday 10th December (register using the link in the weekly newsletter). ‘That's Debatable!'  is edited by Jason Clift.

Teacher and Tik-Toker Henna Karin-Sayer (@mrsreandpsheteacher) shares her passion for her subject, and the challenges facing those trying to teach religious education today. A shortage of experienced subject teachers and a very mixed picture in what children are taught has led to a 'post-code lottery' in the quality of RE teaching. The subject has different names and different legal requirements depending on what nation your child goes to school in, but it's compulsory to teach religious education to all children across the UK throughout their school life. The differences are in what is taught, how it's taught and the quality of teaching. Fiona Moss is the CEO of the National Association of Teachers for Religious Education (NATRE), advising and training hundreds of teachers every year and lobbying for better funding. Stephen Evans is the Chief Executive Officer for the National Secular Society and Rabbi Benjy Rickman is Head of Religious Education at King David High School in Manchester, a Jewish faith school. They debate how the subject is and should be changing and why it's important. Producer: Rebecca Maxted Assistant Producer: Ruth Purser

Debunking the Myth of Secular Enlightenment: A Clash of Perspectives David Bentley Hart vs Terry Sanderson (Replay)

Today we delve into the contentious debate surrounding the role of secularism in Western civilization and its relationship with Christianity. A growing chorus of new atheist writers heralds the advent of an enlightened era of secular rationalism, purporting to liberate society from what they perceive as the shackles of outdated Christian influence. However, according to David Bentley Hart, acclaimed author of "Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and its Fashionable Enemies," such claims amount to nothing more than an "atheist delusion." His book, which garnered the prestigious Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing in 2011, challenges the narrative of secular triumphalism by revisiting the historical contributions of Christianity. On the opposing side, Terry Sanderson former President of the UK's National Secular Society contends that contemporary society thrives under an increasingly secular framework, asserting that the freedoms and values we cherish are not contingent upon a Christian foundation. In this engaging dialogue, we see a clash of perspectives as David argues that secular perspectives are rooted in a misguided myth of secular "progress." By examining the intertwined histories of Christianity and secularism, David presents a compelling case that challenges prevailing notions of societal evolution. Faith leaders including the Archbishop of Canterbury and Cardinal Vincent Nichols have welcomed a new report which calls for better support for asylum seekers. It comes from a commission set up to consider how refugees might be helped to integrate into society more easily. It makes a series of recommendations and suggests that the current system creates barriers to asylum seekers who want to quickly make good use of their existing skills and qualifications. The government says it's committed to ensuring refugees can take positive steps towards integration as they rebuild their lives in the UK.It's 300 years since J S Bach's setting of the Passion narrative from St John's gospel was first performed on Good Friday at the St Nicholas Church in Leipzig. This week many of the UK's cathedrals and churches will be marking the anniversary by performing it. The composer, conductor and singer, Bob Chilcott celebrates the work and reflects on what is one of the most revered of all musical settings of the Passion. Does religious education at school help young people when they get a job? Lord Karan Bilimoria, a former president of the CBI, thinks it can. He believes RE helps young people to navigate the complexity of modern belief and the diversity of worldviews in the UK today. The businessman, who is from the Zoroastrian tradition, has launched a campaign urging employers to support higher standards in religious education. We hear from Lord Bilimoria, and also from the National Secular Society who feel there are better ways to equip young people for the workforce.Presenter: Edward Stourton Producers: Jonathan Hallewell and Alexa Good Editor: Dan Tierney

Theism or Atheism, published in 1921, examines not only arguments for and against the existence of God, but also the practical usefulness of such a concept. In the words of the author: "Atheism would mean in practice would be an enormous concentration of energy upon purely human affairs, and a judgment of conduct in terms of human happiness and prosperity."

It's Wednesday, September 28th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Hong Kong Bishop on trial for pro-democracy protests A 90-year-old former bishop of Hong Kong went on trial Monday for his support of pro-democracy protests in 2019. Cardinal Joseph Zen is known for speaking out against China's Communist Party which has asserted control over Hong Kong. Police originally arrested the bishop in May. Shortly after China introduced its National Security Law for Hong Kong in 2020, Cardinal Zen said he was ready to face trial and imprisonment.  Cubans voted for faux homosexual marriage & homosexual adoption The whirlwind of sexually perverted lifestyles has been let loose on Cuba. On Sunday, Cubans voted in favor of a new family code that legalizes faux homosexual marriage as well as adoption for homosexual couples. Sixty-six percent of voters supported the referendum while 33% opposed it. Meanwhile, a different storm made landfall in Cuba this week. Hurricane Ian slammed into the island on Tuesday. The Category 3 storm caused mass evacuations, power outages, and flooding. Britain's Nat'l Health Service reluctantly allows doctor to pray On Monday, England's National Health Service agreed to a settlement with a Christian doctor facing disciplinary measures for offering to pray with his patients.  The NHS investigated Dr. Richard Scott for years based on hearsay complaints. The regulatory body even threatened to remove him from the NHS Practitioners List unless he took a nearly $2,000 “professional boundaries” course at his own expense. The recent settlement says Dr. Scott is allowed to offer to pray with his patients.   Dr. Scott told Christian Concern in a video that the next generation of doctors in England live in fear of expressing their faith. SCOTT: “We now have generation of young doctors who are so scared to open their mouth for Jesus in case the National Secular Society, the General Medical Council, NHS England or anybody else, the British Humanist Association, complains. And would rather they didn't get a complaint because it can be very stressful.” Southern Baptist denomination kicks out pro-homosexual church The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention decided to disfellowship a congregation last week over its open affirmation of homosexuality. Texas pastor Jared Wellman, who serves as the Southern Baptist Executive Committee chairman, told Baptist Press the congregation was “outside the bounds of fellowship with Southern Baptists.”  College Park Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina was founded in 1906. Its website states it is a “Welcoming, LGBTQIA Affirming Baptist Church.”  That's quite an alphabet soup there. James 4:4 says, “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” Two anti-abortion laws in Arizona Two anti-abortion laws took effect in Arizona last week. On Friday, a county judge reinstated an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions. The law has not been in effect since the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision. However, the judge reinstated the law in light of the court's reversal of Roe this year.  A second Arizona law also took effect Saturday, banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood Arizona is suspending abortions in response to the laws. Pro-life canvasser shot in back On September 20th, a short, 83-year-old pro-life Michigan woman was going door to door in Odessa Township, volunteering her time to urge voters to vote against Proposal 3, a pro-abortion constitutional amendment on the November ballot, reports Channel 8 News. Anna Visser, director of Communication and Education for Michigan Right to Life, summarized what happened when she came to the home of Richard and Sharon Harvey. VISSER: “From her account, the lady, [Sharon Harvey], that answered the door, was upset with her, started screaming at her. And then, as she was walking away, a man, [Richard Harvey], from the house whom she wasn't originally talking to, he came out, and shot her in the back as she was walking away.” The volunteer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, drove herself to the Lake Odessa Police Department and was then treated and released from the hospital. Richard Harvey claims he shot her by accident. The 83-year-old pro-lifer is a long-time volunteer and has had no complaints about how she has discussed the abortion issue at the doorstep of people's homes. According to a Michigan Right to Life press release, the out-of-control rhetoric of President Joe Biden and Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer must end with the shooting of a pro-life volunteer. Visser said, “She is recovering well and is in good spirits.” Americans confused about whether we are a Christian nation The University of Maryland's Critical Issues Poll found 70% of Americans think the U.S. Constitution would not allow the U.S. government to declare the United States a Christian nation. Sixty-two percent of Americans also oppose the United States officially declaring itself to be a Christian nation.  John Jay, the  First Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, wrote, “Providence has given to our people the choice of their ruler, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” Not surprisingly, a majority of Republicans (at 61%) are in favor of the U.S. declaring itself a Christian nation.  Psalm 9:17, 20 says, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. … Put them in fear, O LORD, that the nations may know themselves to be but men.” Tennessee Governor's acknowledgement of God's sovereignty And finally, Tennessee's Republican Governor Bill Lee  signed a proclamation declaring Friday, September 30 a day of prayer, humility, and fasting. The proclamation declared, “We acknowledge God's sovereignty and the need for God's grace over our state and our nation. …. We seek forgiveness for our many transgressions so that our hearts and our minds may be renewed.  … Scripture tells us that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord, and the Lord gives wisdom freely to those who ask for it. … The people of Tennessee acknowledge our rich blessings, our deep transgressions, the complex challenges ahead, and the need to pause, to humble ourselves and to seek God's guidance for the days ahead.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, September 28th, in the year of our Lord 2022. On paper, the Chinese constitution permits ‘normal religious activities’. In reality, if you try to practise your religion in China independently of the state, you risk prison and worse. In this episode, Dr Sophie Richardson, China Director of Human Rights Watch, speaks to Emma Park about freedom of religion and belief in China – or the lack of it. They discuss the Chinese authorities’ persecution of the Uighurs, the Turkic Muslim minority in the north-west, and the deliberate strategies that are being used to wipe out their culture. In Tibet, Sophie reveals how followers of the Dalai Lama are sentenced to years in prison, and how the Chinese authorities even keep spies in the monasteries. There are similar stories of the suppression of Christians and Falun Gong practitioners elsewhere in China. The speakers also consider the feebleness of the international community’s response to these human rights violations –– and the grim outlook for basic freedoms in the People’s Republic.   Follow Emma on Twitter: @DrEmmaPark   Watch this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93U5CsgHocU&feature=youtu.be   Transcripts: https://www.secularism.org.uk/transcripts   Notes   China's religious persecution is a secularist issue: https://www.secularism.org.uk/opinion/2018/09/chinas-religious-persecution-is-a-secularist-issue   China and Tibet – Human Rights Watch: https://www.hrw.org/asia/china-and-tibet   Why do Muslim states stay silent over China’s abuse of the Uighurs? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/04/why-do-muslim-states-stay-silent-over-chinas-uighur-brutality   Make a stand for freedom, fairness and human rights by adding your voice to the call for a secular democracy. Where do you draw the line between safeguarding people’s protected characteristics, and guarding their right to freedom of speech? The new Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill, introduced in April purports to protect groups defined by reference to protected characteristics, including ‘religion’ or ‘perceived religious affiliation’. But some have argued that the proposed legislation will chill free speech about religion. In this episode, Emma Park is joined by Neil Barber, communications officer at the Edinburgh Secular Society, along with the NSS’s Stephen Evans, to give a detailed analysis of the language of the bill relating to offences of ‘stirring up hatred’. They argue the Bill is likely to make it all too easy to shut down valid debate about religion. While the bill will abolish the common law offence of blasphemy against Christianity in Scotland, there are good reasons for thinking that the new statutory offences will simply be a multi-faith version of the former. How much progress will the Welsh government make with its proposed reforms to RE? In this episode, Emma Park speaks to Stephen Evans, CEO of the NSS, and Alastair Lichten, head of education, for an update. Encouragingly the subject’s name is to be changed to ‘Religion, Values and Ethics’, to reflect a more pluralistic and critical approach. But the proposed abolition of parents’ right to withdraw their children is more concerning. Faith schools will still be able to teach RVE ‘in line with the tenets of their faith’, but will be obliged to offer a secular alternative if parents expressly choose it. In this episode, Emma Park discusses unregistered faith schools, particularly in the Hasidic community with Eve Sacks, a member of the Jewish anti-extremist organisation Nahamu. Eve has spent years engaging with members of the ultra-orthodox community in London. They discuss issues in registered independent schools and the prevalence of unregistered schools where boys aged 13 to 18 are sent to receive religious instruction with little or no secular education. There is also evidence that boys who do not perform well in their studies receive corporal punishment. The result is that they leave school utterly unequipped to participate in civil society. Efforts to tackle these ‘schools’ and similar abuses of children’s rights in the registered independent sector have been slow going, while members of the Hasidic community who want a different education for their children often experience severe pressure to conform. After the interview, Emma speaks to Alastair Lichten, head of education at the NSS, to reflect on the fascinating insights provided by Eve, and the NSS’s position on unregistered and faith schools. In this episode, Emma Park speaks to Gita Sahgal, a human rights activist and Honorary Associate of the NSS, about secularism in India, and the threats it is facing from the Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) movement endorsed by Modi’s government. Modern India has been a secularist state since its foundation in 1947. But since the first election of Modi’s government in 2014, as Gita explains, Indian supporters of secularism, pluralism, and the rule of law have been targeted, silenced, and in some cases imprisoned or killed; and the coronavirus pandemic has been used as an opportunity to clamp down on them further. Gita and Emma also consider how the ideology of Hindutva is bringing its version of Hinduism closer to a monotheistic religion, and how this reinforces its intolerant stance towards Indians who are not Hindus, in particular, the large Muslim minority. Finally, Gita discusses her current work with One Law For All, which is campaigning against Sharia law and other religious laws in the UK. They discuss the narratives of religious exceptionalism and persecution propagated by some on the Christian right – and other tactics which they have used over many years to build up their political influence. Andrew argues that the Christian right use a misinterpretation of the First Amendment to justify religious gatherings during the pandemic. How did the secularist movement begin in Britain? And why should modern supporters of secularism care about its history? In this week’s episode, Emma Park speaks to Bob Forder, a member of the NSS council and former history teacher, about the origins of secularism in Britain. Bob explains how the secularist movement was, from its early years, bound up with the story of the National Secular Society. From its origins in local working-class associations, secularism has always been a socially progressive if not radical movement that has challenged the established hierarchy. Freedom of speech and of conscience, abolishing the blasphemy laws, providing scientific information about birth control - issues like these have been at the heart of secularist campaigns, and supported by the NSS, for over a hundred and fifty years. And, as this podcast shows, understanding the history of secularism can help reinforce its supporters’ sense of purpose, and their shared identity, even today.
