Episode 16! We have a wonderful conversation with the determined and passionate, Stanthorpe based, Emma Rhymer, about how she discovered mountain biking as a teacher at a school camp in her early 40s and was immediately hooked. This discovery sparked an amazing journey from rookie mountain biker to a dedicated Masters endurance athlete, working with the support of her husband, Dylan, and a dedicated coaching support team from skills coaching to dietician to movement coach, in her pursuit of competition and growth, successfully racing 24 Hour MTB championships, amongst other shorter cross country races and her first bikepacking experience at the BrisDivide in 2021. Emma is transforming her day to day life around mountain biking including moving towards relief teaching while growing her coaching expertise and is a real inspiration to us to follow your passions. We talk all things that come with getting into a new sport "later in life", including skill development, training, injury and balancing work/family/mountain biking, as well as the value of a very supportive bike community and the self-confidence and new learnings that a journey like this can bring. Amongst others, Emma makes reference to Dylan Cooper at rideTECHNICS, Aus Cycling, Ride Sunshine Coast, i-Ride Bikes Toowoomba, Matt Wilkins of Mountain Bike Coaching Australia, her current coach Anna Beck, Jodie Willet, Jess Douglas and Rod Hickey. Emma also references kicking off her racing at the Wild West XCO series, plus 24 hour racing the Merida 24 Hour at Hidden Vale Adventure Park, the 3 hour MTB race Chicks in the Sticks and taking part in the SEQ bikepacking event, the BrisDivide. You can find Emma on Instagram at @emma.rhymer.mtb
Sarah and Kristen have a great chat with Sunshine Coast local, Matt Wilkins. Matt is co-owner of Mountain Bike Coaching Australia and his adventure resume extends well beyond mountain biking, . Matt has paddled the Bass Strait from mainland Australia to Tasmania; placed third at Trans Continental, riding self supported from London to Istanbul and completed (and failed) numerous other adventures in Australia and overseas. We cover how Matt's childhood informed his attitude to riding bikes and adventuring as an adult; weird places he has slept on multiday missions; solo versus shared adventures; the learnings that come from attempting and failing on adventures and managing the “selfish” nature of preparation for huge expeditions while balancing (or not balancing!) relationships and the rest of life. Matt is pretty elusive online but you can check out his business account at @mtbcoachingaus
We’re counting down to Darwin Day, and you’re all invited to the par-TAY! This week, Jocelyn and Bradley celebrate the origin of Origin of Species author Charles Darwin with evolutionary geneticist and frequent (fruit) flier Dr. Kristi Montooth. Kristi regales us with tales of her work with model organism extraordinaire Drosophila, explaining why it’s hard to get some flies drunk, and why they owe their survival and ubiquity to the properties of their magical membranes. She also discusses the pivotal role the humble fruit fly played in the so-called “modern synthesis” of evolution and genetics that has yielded one of the most powerful and comprehensive explanatory frameworks in the history of science. More broadly, Kristi explains how the synthesis of many different types and sources of information is a hallmark of her work, and the friends discuss the chaotic, beautiful, joyously fractalesque nature of the living world and our attempts to understand it. Which is scariest: barn swallows, wolf spiders, or middle-schoolers? If you’re Dr. Matt Wilkins, the answer is “none of the above,” because nothing is scary when you’ve braved the amorous wilds of Romanian hostels and run afoul of Russian military personnel while conducting fieldwork in Siberia. During this week’s episode, Matt shares these stories—complete with bird calls, Russian accents, and the musical stylings of the “veloci-rapper”— and so much more. He tells Jocelyn and Bradley how a longtime fascination with linguistics gave rise to his interest in animal communication systems, which in turn fueled his interest in science communication and his Galactic Polymath ambitions. The friends also discuss key challenges facing science communicators, including common misconceptions about evolution and how Matt addresses these, and Matt’s advice for scicomm-curious researchers. Matt Wilkins is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Vanderbilt's Center for Science Outreach who works as the Resident Scientist at Head Magnet Middle School, developing and teaching STEM curriculum. He collaborates with science, math, English, social studies, and Spanish teachers to build rigorous, engaging, interdisciplinary lessons that help students master abstract concepts, become more curious, and develop critical thinking skills. Matt's previous and ongoing research involves multimodal sexual selection, acoustic divergence, and speciation. For his PhD he studied barn swallows in North America, Europe, and Asia to quantify variation in feather ornaments and song resulting from different targets of sexual selection across populations. As a postdoc at the University of Nebraska he extended this work by developing a 'phenotype network' approach for visualizing and analyzing the functional evolution of sexual communication signals in barn swallows and Schizocosa wolf spiders. On July 6, 2018, Matt's article called More Recycling Won't Solve Plastic Pollution: It's a lie that wasteful consumers cause the problem and that changing our individual habits can fix it was published in Scientific American. Matt takes a real world approach and critical look at the American system that punishes individuals for littering but not the companies who create that unnecessary litter in the billions.
