Cristina guest hosts her first episode with special guest Dr. Marina Watowich: an Evolutionary Biologist and current NIH F32 Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Watowich earned her Ph.D. in Biology in 2022 from the University of Washington, where she specialized in Data Science. Her research focuses on how environmental perturbations impact long-term health-related phenotypes and why some individuals are more resilient/susceptible to adverse conditions. To do this, she uses a combination of genomic approaches, computational techniques, and long-term observational data to understand how the environment 'gets under the skin' to result in phenotypic variation. Marina was recently awarded an F32 grant from the National Institutes of Aging to explore the consequences of differential immune investment on molecular aging phenotypes in subsistence-level populations. ------------------------------ Find the papers discussed in this episode: Watowich, Marina M., et al. Tickets available at https://richarddawkinstour.com/ I shall be spending the whole of September, and the first week of October, in North America, speaking in ten different cities from Dallas to Vancouver. I am 83 years old, and travel is more irksome than it was. The maxim, “Quit while you're ahead” has recently received a welcome boost, and I anticipate that this will be my last American tour. My swansong. My final bow. There'll be a Q & A at every event. And I'll be signing any or all of my 19 books, including The Genetic Book of the Dead, which will be just published. This will probably be your last opportunity to tell me how profoundly you disagree with everything I've written and said. Or the reverse if that is the case. In this episode, Natalie and Kimberly dive deep into the choose your own hormone phenomenon. They discuss an evolutionary biologist;s perspective of individual vs. group think when it comes to women's health, the connections between hormones and reproductive health issues like endometriosis and PCOS, as well as the evolutionary case for grandmothering. Bio Natalie Dinsdale, PhD is an evolutionary biologist, a researcher, an astrologer, a dancer, and a mother. She investigates how evolutionary dynamics shape features of sexuality, reproduction, and health & disease in humans. What you will hear: Carl Jung as inspiration for ideas on individual experience vs. groupthink - mass psychology The true person vs. The statistical person While individuals matter, her research is on patterns of populations changing over time Pregnancy screening for women in late 30s Trusting intuition around medical choices Endometriosis - is it menstrual fluid the cause of legions? Bi-polar disorder's connections to oxytocin Do people with PCOS have a uterine that contracts less? How does Natalie's research relate to connective tissue, collagen, and parasympathetic responses? Oxytocin doesn't only mean good Trade-offs in evolutionary biology - activities and functions that have to happen for evolution to occur. What is the effect of high testosterone in women and PCOS? How do females of a spaces obtain the resources they need to reproduce? Beneath the surface of a coffee bean or a red pepper flake or a nutmeg seed — or any of the plants we rely on for medicine, food and drink — lie a “bevy of poisons,” writes UC Berkeley evolutionary biologist Noah Whiteman. But the chemical compounds that treat our infections, spice up our meals and calm our nerves didn't evolve for our benefit. Instead, plants, fungi and even some small animals produce toxins to defend themselves against predators, attract pollinators and engage in battles of chemical warfare. We'll talk about the biology and influence of “nature's pharmacopeia” with Whiteman, whose new book is “Most Delicious Poison: The Story of Nature's Toxins — From Spices to Vices.” Guests: Noah Whiteman, professor of Integrative Biology and Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California, Berkeley; director, Essig Museum of Entomology; author, “Most Delicious Poison: The Story of Nature's Toxins — from Spices to Vices”
Rob Brooks is an evolutionary biologist who focuses on the evolutionary consequences of sexual reproduction. His areas of interest include the evolution of mate choice, the costs of being attractive, sexual conflict, the reasons animals age, and the interconnectedness of sex, diet, obesity, and mortality. Leading a dynamic research group known as the SEX LAB, Rob collaborates with other researchers to explore the evolutionary and ecological implications of sexual reproduction. His work is primarily curiosity-driven and often funded by fundamental research programs like the ARC's Discovery program. Rob is motivated to study evolution because of its power to illuminate both nature and the human condition. Currently, he is especially interested in the interplay between evolution and economics, human life histories, sex differences in aging and longevity, the escalating obesity crisis, the relationship between evolution and equity feminism, the evolution of human physiques, the cultural role of Rock 'n' Roll, and the limitations of drawing moral conclusions from the natural world. Rob's first book, "Sex, Genes & Rock 'n' Roll: How Evolution has Shaped the Modern World," received the 2012 Queensland Literary Award for Science Writing. He also writes a regular column for The Conversation called "Natural History of the Present," which explores how an evolutionary view can enrich our understanding of the modern world and the human experience. In recognition of his contributions to science communication, Rob was awarded the 2013 Eureka Prize for Communicating Science & Research. His research primarily involves model organisms like guppies, field crickets, and mice, although he also has ongoing projects involving human subjects. Rob currently holds the position of Professor of Evolution and Director of the Evolution & Ecology Research Centre at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The public is invited to participate in various studies led by his team. Check out Rob Brooks' writing for Quillette here: https://quillette.com/author/rob/ Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode, Dr. Jonathan McLatchie takes us on a deep dive into two classic examples of irreducibly complex systems - the bacterial flagellar motor and the process of DNA replication in cell division. He explains the intricacies of each process and shows why each stands up to scrutiny as a true example of irreducible complexity. Along the way, he explains why the RNA world scenario isn't likely to be the answer to irreducible complexity that materialists are looking for. And near the end, be sure to listen to McLatchie explain the "likelihood ratio"of the evidence for irreducible complexity, a top-heavy ratio he says strongly supports a design hypothesis. This is Part 1 of a 2-part interview. Source

Five key takeaways from this episode: There are many ways to connect to your spirit animal. One way is by going on a shamanic meditative journey to see what animal comes to you. Another way is to notice what animals you have around you, such as in your home décor, or animals that you're always drawn to. They may even show up for you in a dream, which just happened to me very recently. We can have different spirit animals that we call on for different purposes. They all have different meanings and qualities. Depending on what you have going on in your life, and what you need most right now, you may have the energy of different spirit animals around you. We are not meant to stay stuck. As humans, we are meant to keep following our passions and our joy. The more that we do that, the more our vibration will elevate. Not everyone is at that same vibration, and because of this, the more you step into your authentic self, the more you may notice people fall away and out of your orbit. There are many different species or races of extraterrestrials or galactic beings. At this time, there are about 160 different known races, and there are some that we know are not documented. Some aliens will appear to certain people in various forms. Some are within the earth's atmosphere, especially where the veil is thin, in places like Hawaii. If you are interested in making a connection with aliens, the first step is to remove any fear you might have, and also embrace the diversity here on earth. Then, go into a meditative state and invite them in. Keep in mind that they probably won't look how you expect them to. You can't make up something that you haven't experienced. It's normal to think that your imagination may have gotten carried away, and your visions aren't true, but if it's real in your mind, then it's real on some level. There's much to admire about birds. They can soar through the skies, build durable nests, sing the most beautiful songs, and possess a visual acuity that is truly something to behold. But when it comes to their other senses how do they fare? For a long time, it was widely believed that birds had none, but that didn't sit right with Danielle J. Whittaker, Evolutionary Biologist, Managing Director of the COLDAX Center for Oldest Ice Exploration, and author of ‘The Secret Perfume of Birds: Uncovering the Science of Avian Scent'. She joins Jonathan to discuss.

Steve Brusatte (The Rise and Reign of the Mammals) is a paleontologist and author. Steve joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the process of finding dinosaur bones, how mammals survived during the time of the dinosaurs, and how likely it is to bring back the woolly mammoth. Steve and Dax talk about what some of the largest mammals would have looked like, how Thomas Jefferson was obsessed with natural history, and how evolution has shaped what today's mammals are. Steve explains how the dinosaurs most likely died off, that dinosaurs most definitely had feathers, and that blue whales have belly buttons. Simon Conway Morris is an English paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and astrobiologist known for his study of the fossils of the Burgess Shale and the Cambrian explosion. The results of these discoveries were celebrated in Stephen Jay Gould's 1989 book Wonderful Life. Conway Morris's own book on the subject, The Crucible of Creation (1998), however, is critical of Gould's presentation and interpretation. He has held the Chair of Evolutionary Paleobiology in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge since 1995.Simon Conway Morris speaks exclusively to Indian Genes! In his new book From Extraterrestrials to Humans, he cheerfully challenges six assumptions—what he calls ‘myths'—that too often pass as unquestioned truths amongst the evolutionary orthodox. His convivial tour begins with the idea that evolution is boundless in the kinds of biological systems it can produce. Not true, he says. The process is highly circumscribed and delimited. Nor is it random. This popular notion holds that evolution proceeds blindly, with no endgame. But Conway Morris suggests otherwise, pointing to evidence that the processes of evolution are “seeded with inevitabilities.” If that is so, then what about mass extinctions? Don't they steer the development of life in radically new directions? Rather the reverse, claims Conway Morris. Such cataclysms simply accelerate evolutionary developments that were going to happen anyway. And what about that other evolutionary canard: the “missing link”? Plenty to choose from in the fossil record but what is persistently over-looked is that in any group there is not one but a phalanx of “missing links”. Once again we under-score the near-inevitability of evolutionary outcomes. Turning from fossils to minds, Conway Morris critically examines the popular tenet that the intelligences of humans and animals basically are the same thing, a difference of degree not kind. A closer scrutiny of our minds shows that in reality an unbridgeable gulf separates us from even the chimpanzees, so begging questions of consciousness and Mind. Finally, Conway Morris tackles the question of extraterrestrials. Surely, the size and scale of the universe suggest that alien life must exist somewhere beyond Earth and our tiny siloed solar system? After all, evolutionary convergence more than hints that human-like forms are universal. But Dr. Conway Morris has serious doubts. The famous Fermi Paradox (“Where are they?”) appears to hold: Alone in the cosmos—and unique, but not quite in the way one might expect.

He was named a Fulbright Scholar to Indonesia in 1999, and received his Ph.D. from Yale University, focusing on the development of behavior in wild, male chimpanzees in Uganda. Hogan studied grooming dynamics, dominance relationships, mating, territoriality, and hunting. His research led to the first observations of dominance relationships in adolescent males, and a greater understanding of male alliances and the development of hunting and territorial behaviors. Upon completion of his thesis, Dr. Sherrow began studying dominance relationships and territoriality in human males, as well as continuing his work on wild chimpanzees. His studies allowed him to model and study the evolution of dominance, alliances, territoriality, and politics in modern humans. Today, he shares his stories with these chimps, and answers some very important questions about human monogamy, love, phone addictions, gender differences in behavior, dominance, and many more .
