Rob Ingram, Inside McDojo Life: Real Self-Defense vs. Rule-Based FantasyFounder of McDojo Life3rd Degree Karate Black BeltCo-founder of academysafe.orgThis week, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Rob Ingram, known globally as McDojo Life. He has spent nearly three decades inside the martial arts world as a practitioner, instructor, and insider. With 28 years of experience across multiple disciplines, and a 3rd Degree Karate Black Belt, he has become one of the most visible voices exposing corruption, abuse, and fraud. We spoke about an amazing range of topics, from Sarah Haspel's brilliant invention - “The BESTIE” co-designed by a Rocket Scientist, safety from sexual predators for kids and females in martial arts, founding a USA wide database of convicted and fake “senseis”, Tim Kennedy the green beret turned UFC fighter to Pressure Testing martial arts for real world self defence!Rob's work shines a light on a hard truth: martial arts in the United States operates largely without regulation, allowing unqualified and dangerous individuals to assume positions of authority—often over children.Beneath the glossy surface of martial arts the industry—especially in the United States—faces serious challenges: lack of regulation, abuse of authority, and even criminal behavior. His response was not just criticism and calling them out, he took action. As co-founder of Academy Safe, Rob is on a mission to solve this- in his words:“At Academy Safe, we are driven by a deep commitment to protecting martial artists from abuse, assault, and the inherent risks that exist in the absence of federal or state regulations. Founded to address the unsettling prevalence of sexual assault, abuse, and rape in martial arts, our mission is to create safe, supportive, and secure environments for students across the United States. As a non-profit organization, our primary focus is the development of a national registry of martial arts academies. This registry will establish a new benchmark for safety, holding academies to strict standards designed to protect both students and staff.”Equally important to Rob is the preservation of martial arts as something real and functional. He stresses that training must extend beyond tradition and competition rules into pressure-tested, real-world applicability. His message is consistent: if a system or weapon fails under stress, it fails—regardless of how good it looks in theory. This is a necessary conversation about integrity, accountability, and what martial arts should stand for and I loved how authentic, real and passionate this conversation got!
With over 28 years of experience in martial arts, Rob Ingram holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Karate, a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Lissajous-Do, and a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His competitive career includes an impressive (6-0) record as an amateur boxer and a (4-2) record in amateur kickboxing.Rob was also a member of the prestigious international martial arts team, Full Circle, for two years, and ran his own successful martial arts school for four years. Rob's passion for martial arts extends beyond the dojo. For the past decade, he has worked as a business consultant, helping martial arts businesses improve their operations and grow. He is best known as the founder of McDojoLife, an online platform that has amassed over one million followers. McDojoLife's mission is to expose frauds, scams, and unethical practices in the martial arts world, protecting students from exploitation and misinformation. Through his work, Rob has become a leading voice in advocating for integrity and accountability in martial arts.At Academy Safe, Rob plays a critical role in advancing the organization's mission to ensure the safety and well-being of martial arts students nationwide. His extensive experience as a martial artist, instructor, and advocate uniquely positions him to drive the development of the national safety registry, setting higher standards for the martial arts community.https://mcdojolife.comIn this episode, Rob from McDojo Life shares his journey in martial arts, starting from his childhood experiences of bullying to becoming a third-degree black belt. He discusses the importance of legitimacy in martial arts, the dark side of the industry, and the need for awareness regarding abuse and fraud. Rob also highlights the five rules of McDojo Life, emphasizing the importance of safety and integrity in martial arts schools. The conversation touches on the evolution of martial arts, the significance of community, and concludes with a light-hearted discussion about food and comfort meals. In this engaging conversation, Rob From McDojoLife and Dave Sands explore a variety of culinary topics, from marination techniques and celebrity chefs to the cultural significance of food in martial arts. They share personal anecdotes about their favorite dishes, hidden culinary gems, and the challenges of finding quality dining experiences. The discussion also delves into Rob's documentary project, which aims to expose martial arts fraud and promote safety in the industry through the Academy Safe initiative.Send us a textFirecracker Farm Small-batch Spicy Salt Family farm with a secret blend of Carolina Reaper, Ghost, and Trinidad Scorpion peppers.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Breaking down the price barrier: Are your martial arts tuition fees simply too cheap? Are you undervaluing your classes? There's poison in the pricing, and it might not be what you think.IN THIS EPISODE:The stigma surrounding martial arts schools that charge premium pricesThe Myth of the "McDojo" label often given to successful martial arts schools Overcoming the mindset blocks around martial arts tuition feesHow to charge your worth and price your martial arts classes to represent it's true valueAnd more*Need help growing your martial arts school? Start Here.TRANSCRIPTIONHey, it's George Fourie. Welcome to another Martial Arts Media™ Business Podcast. But today I want to talk about the poison in pricing for martial arts classes, for martial arts tuition. Are martial arts classes just way too cheap? Are martial arts school owners charging way too much for their classes and tuition? Are they just ripping people off? Are people getting the value for what they are paying? Or are they the dreaded controversial McDojo if they charge too much? All right! Lots to unpack here. I will dive deep into this, probably ruffling a few feathers in my take on this, but it needs to be said and unpacked. So, let's do this. For show notes, for the transcript of this episode, and all links mentioned, go to martialartsmedia.com/151. Let's jump in. If you've listened to my podcast for a while, okay if you haven't, but we talk a lot about marketing, lead generation, and getting and attracting new students for martial arts schools. That is the primary conversation because I guess in a way, I'm a little bit known for it.People always come to me for that. But here's what's interesting: the first conversation that I had when we onboard martial arts schools into our Partners program was not about any marketing. We're always talking about offers and we're always talking about pricing. It's probably the conversation that's valued the least, but it makes the biggest impact because when we fix this in a strategic way that's without selling your soul and all these limited negative beliefs that come up, providing good value and charging a premium, good premium rate for what your classes are worth. It makes a huge impact because martial arts school owners come up with the idea that they need all these hundreds of students to hit their income goal to have a decent life and be able to provide their martial arts services without having to have a job, a side job to keep the dream alive, etc. You know, for martial arts school owners that want to do this full-time. They have this idea of all these students they need and all of a sudden, we half that by just tweaking the numbers, changing the terms, changing how we go about all this. Now I want to address a few things that come up with us. First up, I probably want to say that there is no wrong and no judgment in any martial arts school owner who provides a great service, and loves what they do. They serve the art of what they do and they...

Do you train Jiu-jitsu for Self Defence? Or are you training for sport and don't care about fighting? The debate of Jiu-Jitsu for real life fighting being superior, compared to Training BJJ for modern athletes being impractical. JT & Joey unpack the difference between " McDojo" level nonsense and real military training for being harder to kill. The other element is the evolution of modern Sports BJJ and that it is far more practical for real life fighting than it was 20 years ago. The rise of submission grappling, wrestling and focus on finishing has changed how practical sport BJJ is for a real combat situation. The question of what training is more effective if you are attacked gets thoroughly discussed, but which side are you on?

McDojoLife (@mcdojolife) is one of my all time favorite accounts on all of Instagram. The page exposes fake and fraudulent martial artists who teach people tactics such as no-touch knockouts. No only does Rob expose fakes, but he exposes conmen who rip off their students and convicted sex offenders who work with children in martial arts. He is basically a real life super hero! In this podcast episode, Rob talks about how he first got involved in martial arts before the days of McDojoLife. As a child he had a cleft palate and required many surgeries and his mother wouldn't let him participate in sports despite his pleading. But that all changed after some bullies at school beat the crap out of him one day and a friend encouraged him to try martial arts. He started with karate, but eventually moved on to sample a wide variety of martial arts like boxing, kickboxing, taekwondo, and Brazilian jiu jitsu. During the podcast episode with Rob, we discuss many theories as to why people follow these fake martial arts masters. We talk about how the rise of MMA and the UFC have shed some light on what works and what doesn't. Rob and McDojoLife are currently in the process of putting together a documentary about fake martial arts and has launched a crowdfunding campaign and hopes to start shooting in August. If you go to the Instagram page @mcdojolifedoc and donate there, you get access to exclusive content as well. ---------- Read more here: https://rolliepeterkin.com/podcast-mcdojolife-rob-exposing-fake-martial-arts/ If you enjoyed this episode, you might want to check out my book, The Cage: Escaping the American Dream, where I detail my journey from Wall Street bond trader to professional MMA fighter.
This episode Brice talks a bout how to make sure you don't end up in at a McDojo Gym. Then goes on to talk about the rank and promotion system within Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Bonus Brice also tells the story of how he was promoted purple belt.
Today Kelly & Kurt get a chance to talk to Robert, the creature and operator of McDojo Life. A website and social media presence that has set out to validate or debunk all the crazy martial arts that we see streaming our social media every day. From no-touch knockouts to improper self-defense techniques. McDojo Life breaks these down in a smart and logical manner while also pointing out some of the absolutely ridiculous things people try to pass as real martial arts!
