What trees work well in small spaces? This week David Maxwell visits two experts who have the answer. Amy Kelly's small suburban garden is full of fruit trees including the mysterious Medlar fruit. Once commonplace in Britain and Ireland, the fruit, which has to be left to over-ripen, has fallen out of favour. Amy thinks the tree still deserves a place because it provides several seasons of interest and fruit to boot! In Ann FitzSimons' Killinchy garden, she is growing a variety of shrubs and trees in pots. It makes for a permanent display and offers those with limited space or those renting the chance to have an interesting garden space. Also on the programme, David visits Billy Alexander in Kells Bay where he is preparing for his biggest display of ferns yet at next year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show. In studio, Colin Agnew, takes questions and provides some Autumn inspiration. Email the programme at gardenerscorner@bbc.co.uk

This week we explore the fascinating stories and brilliant work of three exceptional plantswomen. Only recently has pioneering 18th-century herbalist Elizabeth Blackwell received proper recognition for her work A Curious Herbal – a beautifully illustrated botanical text that was, for centuries, mistakenly attributed to her scandal-prone husband! Fiona Davison, Head of RHS Libraries & Exhibitions, shares insights into Blackwell's life and her groundbreaking work, which was created at a time of rapid botanical discovery in Europe as exotic plants flooded into the Western world. We also hear from passionate plantswoman Jane Steward, a dedicated advocate for the medlar, a rare fruit that was once beloved across the UK – even by King Henry VIII. And finally horticulturist Sarah Wilson-Frost from RHS Garden Hyde Hall will be sharing some excellent advice on growing ornamental grasses to add year-round interest to your garden. Elaine and Julia are back with another lively episode of the Potty Plotters Plotcast! This time, they kick off with a humorous discussion about the burning season on the allotment and the potential for a murder mystery game inspired by Cluedo, but with a plot twist. They brainstorm how the podcast could be integrated into the game, making it a unique experience for listeners. The episode takes a turn towards practical gardening advice, as Elaine and Julia delve into the art of dealing with snapdragons and the versatile nature of borlotti beans. Julia shares her method for drying and saving seeds for next year, while Elaine discusses the importance of cutting down summer fruiting raspberries and the intricacies of managing raspberry canes for future harvests. As always, listener questions are addressed, including a quirky suggestion from Tracy about using odd socks to protect corn cobs from pests. The episode also explores the peculiar fruit known as medlars, with Elaine and Julia considering the potential of making medlar jelly from the overlooked fruit. Gareth joins the conversation with an update on his garlic planting progress, sparking a discussion about the care and maintenance of garlic over the winter months. The episode wraps up with a preview of what's to come in the next instalment, including discussions on splitting rhubarb crowns and dealing with squashes and pumpkins. kraften i et rent smil.En: Lars believed in the power of a clean smile.Da: Denne morgen startede ikke anderledes.En: This morning started no differently.Da: Lars' alarm ringede, han lavede havregrød, tog sin tandbørste frem og bøjede sig for at klemme tandpastaen ud.En: Lars' alarm rang, he made oatmeal, took out his toothbrush and bent down to squeeze out the toothpaste. En: But instead of a small strip, the entire contents of the tube flew out and landed on Lars' toothbrush. En: Lars, who was a bit absent-minded in the morning, didn't notice it, and soon his mouth was made her smirk. En: She handed him a napkin as his mouth foamed over. En: Despite this, Lars continued into the meeting room to present his presentation. En: With every word, his mouth foamed more and more, until his entire shirt was covered in toothpaste.Da: Chefen så knap nok tilfreds ud, og alle stirrede, men Lars fortsatte ufortrødent.En: The boss hardly looked pleased, and everyone stared, but Lars carried on undeterred. En: After the presentation, Sofie pulled Lars aside and helped him clean his shirt.Da: Hun forsøgte at undertrykke et smil, da de begge fejede tandpastaen ned i skraldespanden.En: She tried to suppress a smile as they both swept the toothpaste into the trash can. En: Sofie reassured Lars by saying that everyone was so entertained that they didn't even notice the mistake in the presentation. En: Lars was relieved and thanked Sofie for her kindness. En: From then on, he started brushing his teeth in the bathroom with more attention. En: Even a toothpaste mishap couldn't hide his shining smile, and his kindness created a joyful atmosphere throughout the rest of the company. En: And in this way, despite a frothy day, life in the company continued with happiness and laughter. En: We don't always pay attention to small mishaps, and sometimes this imperfection can actually make the day more colorful. En: And the most important thing is that we always have friends around us, ready to help when we need it, just like Sofie did for Lars. En: And so, the toothpaste became a bit of a legend in the office. En: It became part of the internal folklore and incorporated into the moral that help is always timely, no matter how small or big Five times in Shakespeare's works he refers to a specific plant called a Medlar. In As You Like It, Rosalind talks about grafting a medlar, Lucio talks about a rotten medlar in Measure for Measure, Mercutio uses the medlar tree to describe Romeo's state of mind in Romeo and Juliet and the last two references to medlars are found in Timon of Athens when Apemantus both presents a medlar for eating, and questions whether someone hates medlars. Whether or not we should hate or love the medlar fruit is the subject of our show today. Our guest this week and author at British Food History.com, Neil Buttery, is in the studio with us to share with us the history of this plant, what it looks and tastes like, as well as what it would have been used for in Shakespeare's lifetime.

Cider Touring 2018 Netherlands | CCLive Mini clips of travels and tips while in Amsterdam in September. Anne Frank's house   A visit to Apples en Peren in Amsterdam Then on to the Vondelpark to visit the Medlar tree Medlars have crowns Bicycling around Amsterdam I like renting from Star Bikes, located by Amsterdam Centraal. Nice location and best of all they allow you the ability to drop you bike off after hours. They might size you up and decide if you are the right fit to trust with the bike so act smart. Other rentals require a drop off time of 7pm. A recording from the Ferry boat behind Amsterdam Centraal  - free both ways. The Ferry leaves every six minutes. Every 12 minutes after midnight. Take it for a ride just for the fun of it. New Fictional Cider book: Hard Cider by Barbara Stark-Nemon 2018 release date of October Published by She Writes Press. Story of Abbie Rose Stone, a fictional character who lives in Michigan. Abbie is delving into cidermaking and while navigating family life. Stark-Nemon’s style is descriptive and witty, blending real life characters into the story, yet using pseudonyms that kept this reader engaged trying to figure out just who she was writing about. Give to your favorite cidermaker and by a copy for yourself! Cider Chat Live is a mini version of Cider Chat and is posted in almost real time.
