Texas and Oklahoma are poised to make a move from the Big 12 to the SEC by 2025, potentially participating in a 14-team conference, a departure from the previous 10-team format. Recent reports indicate that Cincinnati, Central Florida, and Houston have reached an agreement on exit fees with the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and are set to begin competing in the Big 12 from 2023 onwards. The specific financial details of their transition to the Power 5 conference have not been disclosed at this time. AAC commissioner Mike Aresco issued a statement confirming the move, expressing gratitude for the success and contributions of the three institutions to the AAC. The addition of these three programs will restore the conference to a 12-team format for the first time since 2010 when Nebraska left for the Big Ten, followed by Texas A&M, Missouri, and Colorado departing a season later for the SEC and Pac-12, respectively. West Virginia and TCU were promptly added as replacements in 2012. In addition to Cincinnati, Central Florida, and Houston, BYU is also slated to join the Big 12 in 2023, transitioning from its current independent status. The three AAC programs and BYU collectively boast impressive records, with Cincinnati notably making history as the first non-Power 5 program to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff last season. Following the departure of three of its most lucrative programs, the AAC is anticipated to compensate by adding six schools from Conference USA—Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UAB, and UTSA are expected to finalize their move by July 1, 2023. Simultaneously, Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, and Jacksonville State are set to join Conference USA as replacements in 2023. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! It's always a blast when John Canzano is back on and he doesn't disappoint, from his early prediction on good the Oregon State Beavers football team will be, and his takeaways from his interview w/ Mike Aresco commissioner of the American Athletic Conference, and much more.
We start Rapid Fire with thoughts on former Notre Dame linebacker Prince Kollie transferring to Vanderbilt to join former Irish defensive coordinator Clark Lea. Other topics include: * Which former Irish quarterback will regret transferring more: Tyler Buchner or Drew Pyne? * Thoughts on American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco calling for an end to the use of the term “Power 5”. * Thoughts on ESPN's Jay Williams saying it's time for people talking sports to stop using the "Mt. Rushmore" metaphor when talking about the greats. * The KC Chiefs will play Cincinnati on New Year's eve and Aaron Rodgers and the Jets face Miami in the first ever Black Friday game this season. -Aresco put out a statement before the AAC Tourney tipped off, asking why the AAC and other Group of 5 conferences aren't as respected as much as ‘Power 5' schools -He mentions Houston is the top team in the country—from the AAC---and they had a recent College Football Playoff team---Cincinnati---and that they should be respected more -The problem? He also admitted that the gap from the 2nd to 3rd best conference in the country is the same gap as the 3rd best conference to the rest of them…we get his point, but that kind of says there's really a Power 2…right? -If there were two power-house conferences with a combined 32 teams, could we see a system like soccer where you need to win to stay in the "Power 2" and you would be demoted if you lose too much? -It seems that the media creates the uneven playing field that is separated into the Power 5 and Group of 5 conferences Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKINGAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
