Joseph Kleiman, President of Buzz Health, is working to improve price transparency and affordability of prescription drugs. He states that providing price transparency as early as possible in the prescription process is critical for prescribers, patients, and health plans to make better, more cost-effective decisions. To achieve true transparency, all parties in the ecosystem must cooperate and share data, moving beyond pricing visibility to fully integrate systems and use real-time information to improve patient adherence and lower costs. Joseph explains, "Buzz Health really focuses on improving the process behind the scenes, developing technologies that sit within the prescription ecosystem, creating opportunities to improve price transparency, early adoption, and integrated benefits for members." "We work with everybody from pharmacies to PBMs to payers to employer groups. Anybody we believe has an opportunity that, with technology and early adoption of price transparency and adherence, could benefit them and the members they serve." "What's interesting is that, like most things, the earlier you have information, the easier it is to make actionable change, things with long-term impact. So if you have price transparency and you have it early on, a prescriber can make more informed decisions. A patient, rather than showing up at a pharmacy counter, can make decisions earlier on. So again, it's kind of like the earlier you have anything in making a decision, the easier it is for you to make a really actionable change all the way up through a PBM or health plan. If they see gaps in coverage and they have that information, they can make changes early on as well." #BuzzHealth #PrescriptionDrugs #Pharmacies #HealthcareIT #PriceTransparency #PrescriptionAffordability #PharmacyTech #MedicationAccess #HealthcareTransparency #PrescriptionPricing #PatientCare #HealthTech #PharmacyBenefits #HealthcareInnovation #PatientOutcomes #MedicalTechnology buzzhealth.com Listen to the podcast here

The Cowboys don't have many chances — and that's exactly the problem. In this episode of Just Wondering, Norm Hitzges breaks down the Dallas Cowboys' upcoming draft and explains why the pressure on their two first-round picks couldn't be higher. With no selections in the second or third rounds, Dallas must hit on picks 12 and 20 to begin fixing a defense that simply wasn't good enough last season. Norm walks through realistic draft scenarios, evaluates defensive targets like Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs, Harold Baines, and Jermod McCoy, and explains how quarterback movement at the top of the draft could quietly help — or hurt — the Cowboys' plans.Norm also explores trade-down possibilities at pick 20, outlining how Dallas might regain badly needed draft capital without sacrificing defensive help. The bottom line is blunt: the Cowboys cannot afford another draft miss. There's no cushion, no waiting around, and no easy fix if they get this wrong. Then the conversation turns to college football — and how the transfer portal has pushed the sport into complete chaos. Norm lays out eye-opening transfer numbers, including massive roster migrations following new coaches, and explains why the system has become unsustainable. The episode culminates with the story of Kansas State head coach Chris Kleiman, a wildly successful coach who retired early, citing the lack of guardrails, agent influence, and constant compensation demands as reasons he simply couldn't continue. It's a sobering look at two football worlds — one fighting to rebuild carefully, the other spinning faster than anyone can control. In this reprise episode, Newport Beach, California City Council Member and now Mayor Lauren Kleiman talks with host M.C. Sungaila about her path to practicing law and the unexpected road to elected office. She also draws the ugly and amazing side of elections and politics in general. Council Member Lauren Kleiman encourages people in Newport Beach to get involved in different areas of what their community is doing to shape and support the place they live in. In this episode, we learn that politics remains an avenue for positive change, and by working together, finding common ground, and putting the community's needs first, we can overcome the negative aspects and create a more inclusive and vibrant society. Tune in to learn more!
Lauren Kleiman is a dedicated public servant and community leader serving the residents of Newport Beach, CA in numerous community and civic roles. She is a member of the City Council and for 2026 she is serving as Mayor. No small feats. This is especially impressive considering that Lauren grew up on Long Island, New York and had no aspirations for “politics.” But she found herself wanting to be an engaged and active member of her community when she and her husband moved to Newport Beach over a decade ago. Today, she is as passionate and committed to her community as they come. Formally trained as a lawyer, her knowledge and tenacity have found fertile ground in public service and have provided a strong foundation for the positions she holds. These same skill sets are the basis for her desire to dig deep and develop a strong understanding of the technical details that are paramount within these roles. Known for her clear views and pragmatic approach to local government, Lauren brings a strong focus to fiscal responsibility, public safety and preserving the unique character of Newport Beach's neighborhoods and coastline. While Newport Beach is the canvas, Lauren's path to public service, her why and the challenges associated with public office is what I was most interested in. Regardless of where you live, public service and being an active and engaged member of your community is something that we all need to play a role in; or risk what happens without our engagement. In this conversation, Lauren shares her path to public service, her goals and the challenges of serving, and her perspective on leadership at the local level. It's a candid look at what it takes to govern a world-class coastal city while staying grounded and representing the needs of the people who call it home. 0:00 – “Introducing Lauren Kleiman & Today's Conversation” 6:40 – Lauren's Background & Path Into Public Service 14:10 – Why Local Leadership Matters More Than Ever 22:05 – Community Needs, Listening & Real Representation 30:00 – Challenges Facing Local Government Today 38:15 – Leadership Under Pressure & Tough Decision-Making 46:20 – Balancing Policy, People & Practical Solutions 54:10 – Building Trust & Long-Term Community Impact 1:01:45 – Lessons Learned From Public Service 1:09:30 – Advice for Aspiring Leaders & Civic Engagement 1:17:05 – The Future of Local Leadership 1:25:10 – Final Reflections & Closing Thoughts
On today's episode, we're talking with investigative journalist Ross Halperin about his new book Bear Witness: The Pursuit of Justice in a Violent Land. Ross takes us on a fascinating journey from academic research on impunity—the unsolved homicides plaguing American cities—to Honduras, where he discovers an unexpected solution. We dig into why the US solve rate for murders hovers around 60% compared to over 90% in other wealthy democracies, and spoiler alert: it's not about more surveillance or militarization. The real issue is witness testimony, and that requires trust. Ross introduces us to Kurt and Carlos, whose charity work proves that community trust, built through years of genuine service and investment, is the key to bridging the gap between communities and law enforcement. We talk about how faith animates their work without being preachy, the humility required to stay open to criticism, and why top-down solutions often miss what actually moves people to speak up. It's a conversation about what it means to bear witness—not just to tell a story, but to show up and be trusted. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Ross Halperin is an investigative journalist and author of Bear Witness: The Pursuit of Justice in a Violent Land. A Harvard University graduate, he worked on Wall Street before transitioning to research on criminal justice, where he worked under Mark A.R. Kleiman, one of the world's leading criminal-justice scholars. His interest in unsolved homicides and systemic violence grew from this research, which revealed that the United States has dramatically lower murder solve rates than comparable wealthy democracies. That research led Halperin to a presentation by Kurt Biehl at a summit organized by criminologist David Kennedy, sparking a years-long investigation into how one community in Central America tackled violence through trust-building and faith. Bear Witness is the result of his embedded reporting in Honduras, exploring how real change happens not through top-down mandates, but through patient commitment to community relationships. Halperin's own commitment to community building is evident in his work closer to home as well—he led a campaign to reconstruct the library in his hometown, reflecting his belief in the power of institutions and gathering spaces. Today, we start a two-part journey into the heart of Honduran society. Our focus will be on one man, Kurt Ver Beek, and the organization he co-founded, Association for a More Just Society (ASJ). Kurt is a professor of Sociology (Emeritus) at Calvin University and lead investigator for an agreement between Transparency International, the Honduran Government, and ASJ. For this first episode, we are joined by the reporter Ross Halperin, whose recent biography (here) of Kurt's ministry (New York Times profile here) paints a fascinating picture of a man dedicated to the cause of justice. While Ross and I do not discuss the entire scope of the book, we do focus on the criminal justice system and the many barriers erected for victims seeking relief. Ross and I talk about how he came to write the book, the work of ASJ in helping reduce the violence in Honduras, some of the main characters in the story, and much more. Ross attended Harvard University and worked under Mark A. R. Kleiman, one of the world's leading criminal-justice scholars. He started reporting this story in 2018 and has since spent much of his time in Honduras. Cross & Gavel is a production of CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETY. Drug policy feels very unsettled right now. The war on drugs was a failure. But so far, the war on the war on drugs hasn't entirely been a success, either.Take Oregon. In 2020, it became the first state in the nation to decriminalize hard drugs. It was a paradigm shift — treating drug-users as patients rather than criminals — and advocates hoped it would be a model for the nation. But then there was a surge in overdoses and public backlash over open-air drug use. And last month, Oregon's governor signed a law restoring criminal penalties for drug possession, ending that short-lived experiment.Other states and cities have also tipped toward backlash. And there are a lot of concerns about how cannabis legalization and commercialization is working out around the country. So what did the supporters of these measures fail to foresee? And where do we go from here?Keith Humphreys is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University who specializes in addiction and its treatment. He also served as a senior policy adviser in the Obama administration. I asked him to walk me through why Oregon's policy didn't work out; what policymakers sometimes misunderstand about addiction; the gap between “elite” drug cultures and how drugs are actually consumed by most people; and what better drug policies might look like.Mentioned:Oregon Health Authority dataBook Recommendations:Drugs and Drug Policy by Mark A.R.
