Escuchar audio

In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy and Stu look back at the week that was, including the Black Caps' Test victory against Bangladesh, the build up to the Australia v Pakistan series, England Cricket news and other bits and pieces that caught our attention. We start by discussing Glenn Phillips and his heroics at Mirpur, which saw New Zealand pick up their first points of this World Test Championship campaign in challenging conditions. There's praise for his approach, his partnership with Mitchell Santner and a conversation about what this performance might mean for his next 12 months across all formats.Eventually the conversation turns to the pitch, and the contrasting comments made by Tim Southee and Najmul Hossain Shanto. Was it fun to watch? Or was it the worst pitch ever? Or was it fun to watch because it was the worst pitch ever? There are also mentions for Ajaz Patel, a nod to conversations about where this win ranks alongside other wins for the Black Caps in Tests away from home, and some excitement towards the end of the episode about a potential ODI debut for Will O'Rourke as the two sides shift countries and formats to do it all again in a matter of days. Our next stop on this cricketing journey is Australia, where pitches have been in the spotlight as well in Geelong and at the Manuka Oval. We talk about who might replace David Warner for Australia when he finally does sail off into the sunset (in Tests at least) and whether there's any chance Pakistan can make this upcoming series a competitive one.England's white-ball squad are in the West Indies, but Binksy was excited to discuss the recently announced Test squad to tour India, which features two uncapped spinners in Tom Bartley and Shoaib Bashir. There's also brief mentions of the BBL, a Jofra Archer sighting, the upcoming India v South Africa Test series and more as we bounce around a wide range of topics. Wednesday, September 25, 2019 US House launches impeachment inquiry into President Trump, and UEFA commits planting hundreds of thousands of trees to make up for Euro 2020 pollution. This is TRT World’s Daily News Brief for Wednesday, September 25th. Time for US President Trump to go? US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the start of an official impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. The Democrat-controlled House will examine whether Trump abused presidential powers and sought Ukraine's help against former vice president Biden. Trump responded with his usual scorn and tweeted from the UNGA calling the inquiry, “PRESIDENTIAL HARASSMENT!” and “witch hunt garbage.” Erdogan pitches for peace at UNGA Turkey's President Erdogan drew attention to the ongoing Syria, Palestine and Kashmir conflicts during his speech at the 74th UNGA in New York. Erdogan called on the UN to back Turkey in ensuring security in Syria's Idlib and criticised the global body for not paying attention to Kashmir. The leader requested the UN to designate March 15, the date of the Christchurch attack, as an international day against Islamophobia. Quake shakes Pakistan An earthquake in Pakistan killed at least 25 people, injuring nearly 300 others. The 5.8 magnitude quake struck Pakistan-administered Kashmir’s Mirpur area, causing property and infrastructure damage. There were no reports of damage and casualties from adjoining India-administered Kashmir where a communications blackout continues. UK PM Johnson faces pressure to quit UK's Supreme Court ruled Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks was unlawful. The court said Johnson acted to limit debate by lawmakers on Britain's impending Brexit deadline in violation of Parliament's constitutional role. Johnson, who is facing calls to step down, said he disagreed with but would respect the ruling. Europe football body plans to go green And finally, The UEFA said it will plant 600,000 trees as part of its commitment to offset carbon emissions from travel to next year's pan-European Championships. Instead of hosting matches in one or two countries, the European football governing body is holding the championship in 12 countries. UEFA will plant 50,000 trees in each of the host countries for the 60th-anniversary of the tournament. And that’s your daily news brief from TRT World ... for more, head to TRTWorld.com.

SAJA, the South Asian Journalists Association, representing 1,000+ journalists in the US and Canada, present their latest SAJA Briefing. Join Anup Kaphle, digital foreign editor of the Washington Post and Sree Sreenivasan, Columbia University's Chief Digital Officer as we discuss one of the biggest crises in four decades of Bangladeshi history. Our speakers: Maneeza Hossain, senior fellow at Hudson Institute, specializing in prospects of democracy in South Asia and the Middle East and has written extensively on Bangladesh; and Zain Al-Mahmood, a journalist based in Dhaka, covering Bangladesh for WSJ. His interests are politics, human rights and sustainable development. For the last 4 weeks, Bangladesh has been convulsed by the Shahbagh movement. What started as the protest of bloggers against a back-door deal between the government and the opposition Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, has mushroomed into continuous street protests against the war criminals of Bangladesh's 1971 liberation war. During the brutal war that gave birth to Bangladesh, the genocidal campaign of the Pakistan army was assisted by local Bengali collaborators, known as "razakars." In 2011, the Awami League government began long-delayed war crimes trials against some of the alleged razakars, most of whom are now top ranking leaders of the country's largest Islamist party, the Jamaat-e-Islami. But the unexpectedly lenient sentencing of Quader Mollah, known as the "Butcher of Mirpur," set off the protests that snowballed into Shahbagh, filling the streets with up to 500,000 protesters, mos
