The Swedish campaigns in Central Europe in the Thirty Years' War are remembered in folklore for their brutality, for massacres of civilians and ‘scorched earth' tactics. And yet, as their leader, King Gustavus II Adolphus of Sweden (1594 – 1632) is remembered almost as a saint, even in these very same regions. King Gustavus Adolphus, an experienced military commander who had already fought and won wars against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Denmark, intervened in the Thirty Years' War like a force of nature – a ‘Lion from Midnight'. He was the champion of the Protestant cause, fighting the Catholic Habsburgs and their followers. In a series of huge moves, his armies swept through the Holy Roman Empire, winning battles at Frankfurt/Oder, Werben, Breitenfeld, Rain on the River Lech, and, finally, Lützen – but this last Swedish victory cost him his life. Professor Gunnar Åselius explains the paradox: Gustavus Adolphus prided himself on his military reforms and the discipline he kept among his soldiers, but even they would turn to pillage and murder to feed themselves when they were not paid. Holding degrees from the universities of Uppsala and Stockholm, Professor Åselius teaches Military History at the Swedish Defence University.

The modern interpretation of manoeuvre theory for warfare holds the deep battle as a central avenue to success. Indeed, Western militaries have become so invested in this thinking that force designs and procurement prioritise capabilities for this over almost anything else. Yet, as Franz-Stefan Gady points out, what if our adversary is just not structured for the type of systems warfare that successful use of manoeuvre warfare necessitates? What if the deep battle doesn't matter, or – and this be heresy to many – centres of gravity just not relevant? Have we even thought about alternative approaches, let alone started educating the next generation of the profession of arms in them? A discussion that starts to turn our theory of battle upside down.

The opportunities to use manoeuvrist theory on contemporary battlefields are scarce, if they exist at all.  Professor Tony King talks to Peter about the three conditions he believes are necessary for it to be successful (movement and scale, defining will and cohesion, and delegated command). Given the geometry, topography and telemetry of today's battlefields we would perhaps be better off educating leaders about alternatives to manoeuvrism.

The agreement will solidify numerous policy reforms offered by the U.N. over the past two years as part of its sweeping Our Common Agenda platform. The Philippine Coast Guard on Wednesday accused Chinese patrol vessels of blocking two of its boats in the disputed South China Sea, describing their actions as “very dangerous”. China claims almost the entire sea despite rival claims from other Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia. Dennis Hegstad, a Tesla owner from Texas, was left stranded when he couldn't access his Model 3. His electric vehicle had 130 miles of charge available, but was completely locked up, requiring a tow to a service center. How To Train A Military

Different cultures conduct military training and education in very different ways. The Israeli Defence Force might be the gold standard for a mantra of ‘Train Hard, Fight Easy': the US Navy during the interwar period experimented with carrier air power to such an extent that it had a mature operating model by the 1940s (one that was instrumental in the outcome of WWII). This culture is not only evident in live military exercises, it is also reinforced by the behaviours during them. In this conversation with Professor Pete Mansoor, the importance of flexibility and adaptability of successful military forces comes to the fore, often developed - to a large extent – during the freeplay periods of live exercises. Simulation certainly has a place, but there are few signs that it can replace high tempo combined arms training events with a decent adversary force.

Amos has written extensively on war and conflict over the past decade, producing over 60 publications. His work focuses on causal mechanisms to explain patterns in armed conflict. Much of Amos' current writing addresses proxy war, land warfare, the Russo-Ukrainian War, and military thinking. He joined me to discuss some of his views on the state of Western military thinking, particularly our potential over-reliance on the concept of manoeuvre warfare. Some of the topics we covered are: Amos' background in the military and path into academia Influences of Amos' first operational deployment in Iraq Understanding the reality on the ground – when intentions clash Defining manoeuvre warfare and its adoption by Western militaries Lack of pragmatism and reality in Western doctrine – what you need to know Why accurate and relevant doctrine matters for success in war Learning from Liddell Hart and his relevance today Debunking the illusion of manoeuvre in modern battles Avoiding misapplication of past terminology in today's warfare Battle of Mosul – Western usage of sieges examined The Precision Paradox – what it means for modern warfare Expanding doctrine to include Sieges, Urban Warfare, Proxy Warfare and re-imagined combined arms/joint warfare Russian invasion of Ukraine – A case in point for modern warfare The importance of questioning preconceived ideas for effective learning During our chat, I made reference to my conversation with Marc Garlasco, Chief of High Value Targeting at the Pentagon between 1997 and 2003 where he led targeting teams during operations Iraqi Freedom, Desert Fox, and Allied Force. It's the start of another year. As 2023 rolls in, Paul just isn't in the mood to go back to making podcasts. As a result, Eli is going to have to do something a little different this week to get Paul in the right frame of mind. What Eli has planned is to have Paul, in a twist to the usual format, take the blind taste test challenge in a round of Off Brand/Brand Off… Or is it Brand Off/Off Brand? Ash Frith brought a few “knock off” gummies to the Xmas party, but now the cheap chaps have the chance to test them against the real thing. Will Paul be able to guess the Percy Pigs from the Leo Lions and the Twinnies from the Squashies? Elsewhere in the podcast, there are a few other Xmas party leftovers to sample; a bag of Lay's “Pizza Hut” crisps and a tin of Mountain Dew “VooDew”.
