#015-What is the best way to detect ketosis?Ketones and ketosis are everywhere in the news. What are ketone bodies? Why are they good for us? How do we measure them?  Our guest today is Jim Howard, the CEO of biomarker-based startup Readout Health. Their product  Biosense is the first clinical-grade, handheld device that measures nutritional ketosis for chronic disease and longevity/wellness focused consumers. He is a digital health executive with an MBA from University of Missouri-Saint Louis.Take away points:Three Ketone bodies are produced as a by‐product of fat metabolism. When the liver metabolizes free fatty acids,  they are transformed into acetyl‐CoA, a molecule used in the production of energy. Depending on the glucose level, acetyl‐CoA can be diverted to  produce acetoacetate, the first of three ketone bodies.  Acetoacetate can further produce β‐hydroxybutyrate and acetone, by enzymatic degradation or spontaneous decarboxylation respectively. All three ketone bodies circulate in the bloodstream. Acetone, because of its small size, diffuses into the lung and appears in the exhaled breath. The devices we will be discussing detect levels of acetone from this process.Deep lung measurement.Biosense Breath Ketone Monitor -Use the code Lufkin20 for a $20 discount at https://mybiosense.com/*** CONNECT WITH ROBERT LUFKIN MD ON SOCIAL MEDIA ***Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/ Twitter:https://twitter.com/robertlufkinmd*** GOT A SUGGESTION FOR A SHOW? ***Contact us at: https://robertlufkinmd.com/contact*** SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS *** We do work with sponsors and brands. This week’s episode may be considered risqué to some. Jill Devine’s hope is to use this platform to talk about the positive uses of medical marijuana and also provide education to those who would like to learn more about medical marijuana. Please understand this episode is intended to be an educational piece. Always seek the advice of a physician with any questions regarding a medical condition. Jill invited Dr. Jamila Owens-Todd’s on the podcast to discuss medical marijuana. Dr. Jamila Owens-Todd’s career path started with studying the sciences at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. Jamila completed her university education by obtaining Bachelor degrees in both, Chemistry and French. As a Chemist, she has worked for private industry; government, at the Food and Drug Administration and within the pharmaceutical industry, at a top pharmaceutical company in the Research and Development Department. As a Chemist, she worked with many innovations in pharmaceuticals and understands the method-of-action of plant medicines. Jamila has had significant experience working with controlled substances and understands the care and compliance with dispensing such medicines. Jamila is currently a member of the Minority Cannabis Business Association. She has maintained a successful herbal dispensary in her practice, dispensing CBD and hemp related products. Jamila has recently started formulating her very own hemp/CBD tinctures, using high-quality, Colorado-grown hemp. As an educator, continuing education has been a consistent principle within her practice and provides for her continued knowledge, growth and healing capabilities. Further training has been pursued in many areas of herbal medicine and specifically with The Medical Cannabis Institute (TMCI), ECS Therapeutics and in extensive Integrative Cannabis Modules for Practitioners. She holds multiple cannabis education trainings. Jamila is also Certified and Trained to work in a Medical Cannabis Dispensary. She has joined the BeLeaf Medical team, which is the FIRST vertically integrated medical cannabis company with cultivation, manufacturing, and dispensing locations open and operating. Phytos, their manufacturing brand, passed an extensive series of required inspections from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to commence on their first of two awarded manufacturing licenses granted earlier this year. Phytos is proud to have a female-led team of strong, diverse women managed by Chief Science Officer Dr. Stephanie Cernicek, a PhD Chemist, Research and Development Manager, Dr. Jamila Owens-Todd, ND and Partner Mitch Meyers. BeLeaf Medical is home to SWADE dispensaries, which is 100% focused on education and health: We firmly believe that education is what will transform America’s relationship with cannabis. That’s why we lead with education in everything we do. From the evidence-based science that informs our product development, to our informative approach to customer care at our dispensaries, our goal is to increase the public’s awareness of the ways cannabis can both serve and soothe us. Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout, brought to you by Addy’s Way. Each recipient will receive a custom designed Supermom t-shirt from Addy’s Way, in addition to the Shoutout. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Angie of St. Louis, MO. Her husband, Josh, nominated her and said: Angie is a Supermom and a half! She grinds every day, especially when she was traveling. She has to take care of actual children (3 to be exact) and then is a wonderful care giver to a sometimes-needy husband. She’s a successful corporate gal and like I said, grinds every day. Angie - YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom. Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast… Hey everybody -- it was a stressful week last week, so I completely understand if you didn't yet listen to our Wednesday podcast with Joan Lynch from WorkingNation -- but you have to go back and listen to it.  We are highly focused on the future of employment, the trends, the ideas, the analysis -- Joan is incredible, she was a VP and Executive producer at ESPN, instrumental in the 30 for 30 series and over the last few years has been more focused on the data and content behind employment.  She is awesome. Make sure you listen.  Alright -- before our question this week on phone interviews, let's get into the stat line… Three data points helping you understand the health of today's sports employment market #1 Total number of sports jobs on WorkInSports.com the leading job board for the sports industry since 1999…. 17,285. Now, this number has been flat since right around the 12th of October -- meaning we've been hovering around 17,100-17,400 active jobs for the last month. #2 We added 1,792 new jobs during the past week.. Again, week over week flat. And #3 -- that is an average of 256 new sports jobs added to our job board every day of the week. Before you let this worry you, the fact numbers are flat, that growth has stopped and we aren't picking up new jobs, this is all very easily explained by seasonality. In fact, I will warn you, these numbers will likely decrease for the coming weeks, only to rebound in January.  Think about it logically -- do you want to be hiring someone new at your organization as you approach thanksgiving break, holiday distractions et all? It's hard enough to integrate new staff remotely, now do it during the holidays. The bottom line, don't panic over the active job number. Keep up your job-seeking activities and be prepared for all that might come your way. Ok, three cool jobs I found this week. Shout out to the University of Missouri Saint Louis students I spoke with last week -- I heard from their professor, Dr. Karen Boleska, that they really like this segment, and I hope you do too… Job #1 -- Social and Community Manager for St Louis FC - if you didn't know, St Louis FC will be the 28th team added to MLS and is majority female-owned, and female-led. Pretty cool. Now, why do I love this job -- first off, the idea of being the one to set and develop the social media and community strategy for a new team and organization, is so, so, so intriguing. Secondarily -- their job description, and I'll link to it in the show notes, is a perfect example of why I tell you all to make a list of the skills that are in demand, see how you stack up, and then adjust your decision. So, if you are one of the UMSL students I spoke to last week -- take a look at this job, understand what skills they are demanding and make a plan for yourself to acquire these skills. That's how you stay market relevant. Job #2 -   Video Coordinator - Milwaukee Herd the g-league team for the Milwaukee Bucks -- look, I love game video. My wife jokes that she could sit in a room analyzing spreadsheets all day long, and I say, I could do the same with game film. If you are into coaching or scouting, OR even the other direction, content, and analysis -- working in the video room for a team is a great place to start and learn. Job #3 -- Email Marketing Coordinator - Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment -- the owners of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL's New Jersey Devils - I bring up this job for a couple of reasons.  1: People tell me all the time they want to work in sports marketing -- and if you are one of those people, marketing is a very broad term so consider learning some specifics. Email marketing is a specific aspect of sports marketing and has different requirements and knowledge than other roles.

The substantial loss of customer data and resulting fraud have seemingly become more common, including the announcement of the Target and Neiman Marcus compromises in 2013. As a result, the social and technical sciences are increasingly examining the market for data resale which is driven in part by these data breaches. This research is increasingly driven by assessments of web forum-based markets with varying depth of content and representativeness. As a result, there is a great deal of speculation about the profit margins and economy for stolen data. Researchers rarely provide metrics for the cost of various products, and some argue that the type of forum analyzed may provide inaccurate data on the costs of information. In fact, Herley and Florencio argue that open forums are largely a lemon market, where advertised costs are low but the risk of loss is quite high. Similarly, there is limited research considering the organizational structure of actors in the marketplace. Some in the media use the terms gangs or mafias to refer to the thieves and data sellers who acquire information, but this may not accurate reflect the realities of the relationships between buyers, sellers, moderators, and others who facilitate transactions. This presentation will explore the economy and organizational composition of stolen data markets through qualitative and quantitative analyses of a sample of threads from 13 Russian and English language forums involved in the sale of stolen data. We present estimates for the costs of various forms of data, and examine the relationship between various social and market conditions and the advertised price for dumps and other financial data. The findings support the argument that higher risk conditions within a forum are associated with lower prices for data, while more legitimate and organized markets have higher prices. In addition, the organizational composition of the market are explored using a qualitative analysis which finds that the markets are primarily collegial in nature at the individual level, enabling individuals to work together in order to facilitate transactions. There is also a distinct division of labor between participants on the basis of the products sold and skill sets available and some evidence of long-term market stability on the basis of managerial structures and time in operation. Finally, quantitative social network analysis techniques are applied to this sample of forums to assess network density, user centrality, and the resiliency of the network structures observed. The policy implications of this study for consumers, law enforcement, and security analysts will be discussed in depth to provide improved mechanisms for the disruption and takedown of stolen data markets globally. Dr. Thomas Holt is an Associate Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University specializing in cybercrime, policing, and policy. He received his Ph. D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis in 2005. He has published extensively on cybercrime and cyberterror with over 35 peer-reviewed articles in outlets such as Crime and Delinquency, Sexual Abuse, the Journal of Criminal Justice, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Deviant Behavior. He has also received multiple grants from the National Institute of Justice and the National Science Foundation to examine the social and technical drivers of Russian malware writers, data thieves, and hackers using on-line data.
