You know those party game questions where you're asked if you could have dinner with anyone – dead or alive – who would you choose? Well, this is my party game answer come true because I had the hugely undeserved privilege of sitting down with seven of my theological HEROES – Dr. Jim Howard, my spiritual mentor and a Denver Seminary professor; Dr. Lynn Cohick, distinguished professor of NT and director of Houston Theological Seminary, formerly the provost of my alma mater – Den Sem; Dr. Scot McKnight, acclaimed NT scholar, author of more than sixty books, who's been a seminary professor for many decades and guest teaches at Oxford; Dr. Dorian Coover Cox, a world renowned expert on Exodus and Israel's journey from captivity to Canaan and beloved professor of Old Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary; Dr. Eva Bleeker, a licensed counselor and chaplain, bereavement expert, and professor at Denver Seminary as well as one of the kindest, most empathetic scholars you'll ever meet; Dr. Craig Keener, a palpably humble, albeit world renowned biblical scholar, author of the IVP Bible Background Commentary which is on the shelves of pretty much every minister I know as well as eight Bible commentaries, 37 books and over a hundred academic articles, he's a professor in the doctoral program at Asbury Theological Seminary; and finally the gentleman who's the main reason I chose the doctoral program at Denver Seminary, Dr. Craig Blomberg, who's a world renowned NT scholar, has authored and edited many, many academic works like The Historical Reliability of the New Testament and Interpreting the Parables, he was on the translatory team for the most recent edition of the NIV Bible, has served as a research fellow at Cambridge and recently retired from Denver Seminary but continues to teach a few classes in his role as professor emeritus of the NT. The credentials held by this dream teaching team are unstinkin' believable y'all but their humility, kindness, and generous willingness to help the rest of us fall deeper in love with Jesus eclipses their academic resumes. This perfectly numbered crew of seven scholars became a family of spiritual big brothers and sisters to us at Kerygma and I trust you'll come to feel that way as well as they open your eyes even wider to the God who loves us more than we can ever ask or imagine. During the weekend show Nothing Impossible, KMOX's Michael Calhoun and Travis Sheridan found a start-up working to reverse diseases like diabetes with just a breath. They talks with Jim Howard, CEO of Midtown St. Louis-based Readout Health
Jim Howard is a 28-year health technology executive and current CEO of Readout Health in St. Louis. Jim's career started in the pharma industry before transitioning to digital health in the early 2000's to digital health back in the Blackberry days. His background included leadership positions in respiratory diagnostics with CareFusion that led him to be interesting in breath technologies to solve chronic disease. He is now co-founder of Readout Health, maker of Biosense, the medical device that tracks fat burn trends providing real-time feedback on exercise and food for behavior modification. Jim lives in St. Louis with his wife and young children and has greatly benefited from a low-carb lifestyle since 2018. “I was a college athlete that had six surgeries and lived a life of debilitating inflammation by 50 due to the a high carb/essentially low fat diet. My wife had had cancer and was on the ketogenic diet, and when I caved in the impact was almost immediate. I was later introduced to the researchers that were working on the Biosense breath ketone technology. Three patents later, here we are. I now run the most innovative company in the biomarker metabolic research world, working with pharma, researchers, and consumers.” Conversation topics: Why is it so important to have biofeedback all day for metabolic biomarkers like ketones? Snapshot or video? What is ketosis dosing? What is the impact of certain levels of ketosis on inflammation and recovery? What about all of these other areas like mental health and cancer tumors? LowCarbUSA® Founder and CEO Doug Reynolds had a fascinating conversation about ketone dosing with BioSense Chief Medical Officer Naomi Parella, MD, and BioSense President and CEO Jim Howard. If you've ever been interested in easily measuring and tracking your level of nutritional ketosis over time, and in using these results to help you better manage your metabolic health and fat burning , you will be fascinated by Episode 93 of the LowCarbUSA® Podcast. The Biosense® device measures breath acetone, which is produced as a byproduct of ketogenesis. The concentration of acetone in the breath indicates one's level of nutritional ketosis. The Biosense® system is intended for self-testing of acetone and is intended for home (lay user) or professional use in the management of patients seeking to reach or maintain nutritional ketosis. We're halfway through our SFC AMA Series, and, true to the series title, we invited you, our community to share questions you had about literally anything related to shred ministry so that we could Shine Brighter and Bridge Better together. We knew, and even hoped that you would ask questions that were challenging, because only by talking through them can we learn how to effectively respond in love to the people and situations in our everyday lives In this week's episode, Ryan Leeds interviews Jim Howard to answer the question, “What does the Bible say about social justice and LGBTQI+?” We actually received a few questions on this topic, and it felt appropriate to combiner's them into this one episode. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're going to explore the cultural context of a familiar story in John's Gospel account, which includes one of my favorite Greek words in the entire New Testament cannon…this is one of two passages that taught me how to linger in God's embrace. We'll also be chatting with one of my favorite seminary professors, Dr. Jim Howard, about the concept of imago Dei, and how every single human being, regardless of ethnicity, gender, culture or creed is made in God's image and therefore inherently valuable and worthy of respect. It's going to be great, galvanizing conversation, so grab a cup of coffee and your Bible – unless you're driving, of course! – and come hang out on the porch with us!
#015-What is the best way to detect ketosis?Ketones and ketosis are everywhere in the news. What are ketone bodies? Why are they good for us? How do we measure them? Our guest today is Jim Howard, the CEO of biomarker-based startup Readout Health. Their product Biosense is the first clinical-grade, handheld device that measures nutritional ketosis for chronic disease and longevity/wellness focused consumers. He is a digital health executive with an MBA from University of Missouri-Saint Louis.Take away points:Three Ketone bodies are produced as a by‐product of fat metabolism. When the liver metabolizes free fatty acids, they are transformed into acetyl‐CoA, a molecule used in the production of energy. Depending on the glucose level, acetyl‐CoA can be diverted to produce acetoacetate, the first of three ketone bodies. Acetoacetate can further produce β‐hydroxybutyrate and acetone, by enzymatic degradation or spontaneous decarboxylation respectively. All three ketone bodies circulate in the bloodstream. Acetone, because of its small size, diffuses into the lung and appears in the exhaled breath. The devices we will be discussing detect levels of acetone from this process.Deep lung measurement.Biosense Breath Ketone Monitor -Use the code Lufkin20 for a $20 discount at https://mybiosense.com/*** CONNECT WITH ROBERT LUFKIN MD ON SOCIAL MEDIA ***Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/ Twitter:https://twitter.com/robertlufkinmd*** GOT A SUGGESTION FOR A SHOW? ***Contact us at: https://robertlufkinmd.com/contact*** SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS *** We do work with sponsors and brands. Jim Howard arrives at Cape Howe to meet his old friend Bill Andrews who happens to be a Doctor. On arriving he is startled to find out that Bill owns a private island of his own, a little place where he and John, his Son who has become something of a recluse, now call home. Apparently Jim has a Wife and small child who will be arriving in a couple of days to join them on the island – although Bill sent a rather odd letter before he arrived – requesting his friend bring a variety of books on lycanthropy. If the fact that Bill now owns his own island was a bit of a shock for Jim, imagine when he meets young John after so many years to find that his hands are overgrown with thick amounts of hair. This episode is another one from Dark Fantasy, a series that aired for 31 episodes between November of 1941 to June of 1942. It originally aired on Friday, February 13th, 1942.

(Mar 11, 2019) Some friends are worth the extra effort. Even if they nearly burn down the mess hall. Episode 32: Security Matters and Draining the Tank This morning we were joined again by Jim Howard of Trinity Security Allies. Trinity Security Allies is hosting the 2nd Annual Church Safety and Liability Conference this coming Saturday, September 15, in Trinity Florida. More info can be found about the conference here. https://www.trinitysecurityallies.com/church-safety-conference.html We have been busy. September brings with it all kinds of new beginnings in church world. Andrew's church began a new 6 week sermon series called BLESS that aims at developing a culture of evangelism in the church. We were expecting to have baptisms this Sunday morning, but the family of the two young men being baptized decided against it. When Andrew went to drain the baptistry (read horse trough here) he got soaked, because he is a dummy.. The highight of this experience was the kindness and grace shown by a few ladies in the church. It is amazing to watch what kindness can accomplish. Jim Howard came on to not just discuss the Church Safet and Liability Conference, but also to discuss serious safety issues facing churches. He touched on the importance of vigilance, and the need for the ongoing scandal in the Catholic Church to be handled correctly, because all churches need to be trustworthy and accountable. We talked about particular issues in churches, namely with children and students. Jim stressed the importance of separate spaces, especially restrooms, for each age group. Have we got a deal for you! Today I wanted to take a moment to reply to a guy named Jim Howard who reached out, he listens to the show. Hey Jim, if you're out there, thank you very much for not only reaching out but for following up and giving me the opportunity to speak about your comments in this show. I had done an episode, if you guys didn't check it out, it was about whether or not authenticity, finding your true self can be seen as being self-absorbed, right? Am I just being selfish and self- absorbed and asking all these questions about myself and who I am and what I want? A lot of my clients struggle with that. They ask themselves that question, they sometimes feel as if it's too much to ask or something like that. So Jim wrote me in reply to that and his thoughts were so beautiful and thought-provoking that I wanted to share a few of them with you and reply to them. So here we go.
