Scott Zarret is a CPA who went to school at the University of Maryland and is the founder of CPAacademy.org. They are the largest provider of free continuing education to the accounting profession and have over 365,000 members. Scott comes from a family of accountants/educators so what he’s doing now is not a far cry from what he grew up with. He started out in public accounting but quickly realized that it wasn’t his cup of tea. He worked several jobs since that first foray into the business until he was introduced to the idea of selling cost segregation studies. He put on his entrepreneurial hat and thought about how to sell something like that and realized that education was the way to go. He put on a live event that went really well but realized that live events don’t scale well, so he started pursuing the idea of online education with a model similar to the major universities. The first few years in business weren’t easy, but that struggle is what taught Scott the lessons he needed to learn in order to build the business he has today. Every state requires an average of 40 hours of continuing professional education to maintain your CPA license. There is no other profession with that level of requirement. From a marketing perspective, this is a great captive audience and there is a huge demand for this kind of education. Anything where you can make the argument that the topic will make the CPA more effective at their job, it will qualify as continuing professional education. CPA academy offers these courses for free so it’s a gold mine for small to midsize firms that care about budget and want to spend their time well. Last year was the tax season from hell, and this year is looking to top it. Around this time last year, the demand for education exploded right after the stay-at-home orders. People were scrambling to understand the recent PPP legislation as well as the new work-at-home paradigm. This year, PPP is still important but there are new programs being introduced that CPA’s need to stay up to date on. Each state has its own programs and bills working their way through the system which leaves a lot of uncertainty in the business. From an educational standpoint, there is going to be a greater shift to online learning no matter what happens with Covid. The flipside to that is that live events and conferences are on the decline. Scott has also noticed a trend towards people looking for content that’s grouped together like a mini-certification. Scott opened the CPA Academy with one goal which was to deliver free continuing professional education. It started off with webinars and is developing in a number of different directions. There are seven main topics that Scott believes are going to be in high demand in the future. They are financial planning, tax controversy, estate planning, non-profits, international tax, retirement planning, state and local taxes. Tax controversy isn’t as popular as it should be which is probably an advertising issue, but it can be extremely difficult for CPA given all the educational content available. Bankruptcy, tax resolution, and tax controversy go hand in hand and we are seeing the biggest spike in bankruptcies right now since 2010. Of the 110,000 businesses that have closed during the pandemic, many of them are going to owe income taxes. For most CPA’s, they need to realize that a quarter to a third of their existing clients are going to need tax resolution representation in the near future. CPA’s and EA’s need to at least know the basics with regards to dischargeability. You don’t need to know everything about bankruptcy, you just need to know how to interpret and read the basic documents and be able to refer the client to the right professional.   Mentioned in this episode: Michael Rozbruch's Tax & Business Solutions Academy - rozstrategies.com CPAacademy.org

There’s a lot of hype, hand waving, and ink being spilled about artificial intelligence in business—and enterprises are taking the bait. According to a 2019 report by Gartner, AI implementation has grown by an astounding 270 percent in the past four years and has tripled in the last year alone. By 2021, IDC researchers predict that organizations will spend $52.2 billion annually on AI-related products. We’ve spent decades feeding AI vast amounts of data and propping it up with energy-hungry data centers. But despite its speed and smarts, AI lacks one critical element: common sense. Ep. 15 - Hayden Williams: CFO & Former VP Of Education At the Washington Society Of CPAs

Today I’m excited to be talking with Hayden Williams, a national leader in CPA education. Hayden is Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Education at the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (WSCPA). Hayden started as a CPA almost 20 years ago. He was a staff accountant at a small firm in Arizona before moving to Director of Finance at the Arizona Society of CPAs. Following his dream to live in the North West, Hayden became CFO of WSCPA. After two years with WSCPA, Hayden transferred to Vice President of Education. Hayden and the education department at the WSCPA provide about 1000 webcasts and webinars to their members. 300 are live programs, and the WSCPA actually webcasts about 100 of those live programs. There are also 15 conferences, 5 of which are webcast. “In the last seven years, education has changed dramatically with the introduction of the Internet. The Internet was always here, but when the downturn in the economy came … there was an onslaught of education being provided via the Web.” This includes self-study programs, webcasts and webinars, and that changed the landscape totally for CPE, where the state society or a county bar association had a geographic lock on education. That doesn’t exist anymore. Seven years ago WSCPA might have had 400 live programs and a few conferences, but they have actually cut back on live offerings to start producing webcasts. If you aren’t familiar, there is a difference between a webcast and a webinar. A webcast is a video and audio presentation with a power point. A webinar is the audio with a power point. The difference is that you have a talking head on a webcast. Some entities will market their webinars as webcasts, but you should expect a live presenter in a webcast. Before Hayden was VP of Education, WSCPA did their first live webcast. They had 300 people from all over the country attend the 990 course via webcast. “That always stuck in the back of my mind, so I thought we should be doing this on a regular basis.” Now, WSCPA has really embraced technology. They have partnerships with five or six states in which the WSCPA provides webcasts for those states, and the WSCPA purchases webcasts from other entities. “We really embrace that technology and we’re not worried about saturating the market. We will have a class on 1040s, and three days later we’ll have a webcast of 1040. What we’re trying to do is penetrate the market as much as possible with all forms of CPE.” Seven years ago, the WSCPA came up with the concept of the One-Stop Shop. They endeavor to provide all of the self-study, webcasts, webinars, and conferences and live seminars that a CPA will need, in one digital location. They haven’t grown their market share, but the WSCPA has maintained the market share they had before the economy went south, while many other associations are losing market share. Online CPE has removed a lot of the barriers that existed even just 10 years ago, but Hayden has an idea of where continued professional education will go in the future. Hayden is working to make webcasts and webinars more interactive, and he believes that an important step is for the presenters to start creating an experience specifically for the web audience. Hayden imagines more cameras, a speaker that can talk to the audience using their names, and generally more engagement with the online audience. Hayden imagines an interactive application to accompany presentations, which offers a live workbook experience and direct interaction with the presenter. “We have to start thinking about how we embrace that audience, how do we create that experience?” I greatly appreciate Hayden taking the time to come talk to us. Continuing Professional Education is a big part of my life, and I love that people like Hayden are working to make it more accessible and more effective.   -- Resources: Learn more about Hayden, CPE and the WSCPA Contact Hayden with the subject line “Improv is No Joke Podcast” Learn more about your ad choices. In 1979 he began work with Extension Services in Pharmacy at the U.W. School of Pharmacy. He has served as Chair of Extension Services in Pharmacy since 1996.  His current responsibilities include all phases associated with the planning, development, marketing, administration and evaluation of post-graduate continuing professional education/professional development programs at the state, national, and international level for pharmacists as well as personnel within the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Hanson also has the distinction of serving as the Melvini H. Weinswig Distinguished Professor.Dr. Hanson is also involved in research as it relates to continuing education, lifelong learning and continuing professional development in pharmacy. His research focuses on methods by which providers of continuing education may better serve as "facilitators" of learning. A major component of this includes the exploration of means by which pharmacists' extent of participation in lifelong learning/continuing professional development may be predicted based on specific learning characteristics; armed with this information, the CE provider should be able to enhance the design of programs to better meet the needs of prospective learners. An additional research component related to the facilitation of lifelong learning focuses on the responsibility/role of schools of pharmacy to prepare pharmacy students to become lifelong learners and adopt the concepts of continuing professional development. The research efforts of Dr. Hanson (and his colleague Dr. De Muth) were recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy which presented them with the Rufus Lyman Award for the best manuscript published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education during the 1992 calendar year. Dr. Hanson is active in numerous professional organizations in Wisconsin, the U.S., and internationally. He was a recipient in 1991 of the prestigious "Award of Merit" presented by the Section of Continuing Professional Education of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
