Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. I am ecstatic to introduce today's episode, as it features both a knowledgeable guest who is well known within certain circles of the Phish community, and a thorough, wide-ranging discussion about three of the greatest improvisational rock concerts ever played: Phil and Friends at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on April 15, 16, and 17, 1999.While not a Phish show, or even a Grateful Dead show, this run of concerts was a milestone for both bands. Not only was it the first time that members of the two major jambands shared a stage, it's notable that songs from both Phish and the Grateful Dead were played over the three nights. I've been listening to these shows since soon after they were played and they haven't aged a day. When Charlie Dirksen of Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation volunteered to discuss them and tell about what it was like to actually be there, I couldn't wait to hear about it. These shows have lived in my head for over 20 years, so to hear a first-person account of what they were like made for one of my favorite conversations I've ever had for this podcast. This episode easily could have been three hours long–every time a song was mentioned, it took a lot of willpower on my end not to insert yet another music clip. But there was so much to discuss before we even get to the music. Let's join Charlie to chat about his responsibilities at Phish.net, Steve Kimock's guitar wizardy, and where John Molo fits into everything, as we break down Phil and Friends from April 15, 16, and 17 at the Warfield Theater, in San Francisco, CA.
Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias, or more really, the third and final episode of “This Time Will be Different: 15 Years Since Hampton.” I am your host, Brian Weinstein.Today's episode ends our look back at what led to Phish's comeback at Hampton, 15 years ago on March 6, 2009. If you haven't listened yet, previous episodes have covered The pressures that led to the hiatus in 2000, the multi-faceted hot mess that was 2004, and the rebirth of the Phish experience in the early spring of 2009.When I first had the idea for this miniseries, I figured that today's episode, the one about Hampton 2009, would be an enormous undertaking. A full weekend of shows, easily making up the most important run of the band's career, marking the turning point from the past to the present that would introduce the 3.0 era. Yet, as my co-hosts and I were speaking–Charlie Dirksen and Scott Marks from Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation–it became more about our experiences and our personal feelings during that all-important March weekend. In the end, that's what Attendance Bias is about–each guest's own experience at any given show. There is a lot more of this story to be told but, for now, this love-fest about Phish coming back to life will settle things for now.To wrap things up, please welcome Scott Marks and Charlie Dirsken of Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation as we continue This Time Will be Different, Episode 3.
Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias, or more accurately, episode two of “This Time Will be Different: 15 Years Since Hampton.” I am your host, Brian Weinstein.Today, I join my two co-hosts: Scott Marks and Charlie Dirksen of Phish.net and the Mockingbird Foundation, to take a look at the 2.0 era, as well as Phish's breakup in 2004. For those of you who listened to episode 1, it was clear but not obvious, that Phish needed a break after Big Cypress, and it was never really in doubt that they would get back together. But in the second half of 2.0, mostly in the 2004 calendar year, it was glaringly obvious that Trey's physical health was in jeopardy, and the scene as a whole was rotting from the inside. In a little while, you'll hear Scott compare these three episodes to the original Star Wars trilogy–today's episode is The Empire Strikes Back. Our heroes are at their lowest point, and you have to be knocked down before you can rise up and win the day. It's telling that on Attendance Bias, 2.0 has, by far, the least number of shows represented by guests. It was, and continues to be, a divisive time in the band's history. I originally planned this episode to be about the time of Phish's breakup-2004 to 2008, and what the scene was like without the biggest band on tour. However, this conversation took a different route and we just went with it. It wasn't always a pretty ride, but it has heart and makes the comeback in the next episode all the more meaningful. But we have to have the darkness before the dawn. Today, please welcome Scott Marks and Charlie Dirsken of Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation as we continue This Time Will be Different, Episode 2.
Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. The first week of March is always a conspicuous part of the year for me. No religious or secular holidays, no birthdays or wedding anniversaries in my social circle, but there is one series of dates that will always deserve some deep thoughts, if not any flowers, chocolate, or greeting cards: March 6-8 , 2009, when Phish returned to the live stage at the Hampton Coliseum. As of 2024, it will be 15 years since that beautiful weekend. Being a Phish stats nerd, round numbers hold significance for me, and looking back, it sometimes feels like the reunion happened to a completely different person. This is the topic for a three-episode miniseries, called: “This Time Will Be Different: 15 Years Since Hampton.” For the next three episodes, I will be joined by two co-hosts, Scott Marks and Charlie Dirksen of Phish.net and the Mockingbird Foundation. The three of us will take a look back, not only at the 2009 Hampton Reunion, but at the major Phish events that led to it, including the band's hiatus from 2000-2002, the breakup from 2004-2008, and then episode 3 will focus on that glorious weekend in March 2009. But let's not skip too far ahead. Today, please welcome Scott Marks and Charlie Dirsken of Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation as we open This Time Will be Different, Episode 1.

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is Phish twitter mainstay, Scott Marks of Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation. If you've ever looked up a setlist on Phish.net, noticed a tease in the middle of a jam, or discovered a crazy bustout statistic, Scott is part of the team that keeps track of all of that on Phish.net. I first knew about Scott years ago when he band to tweet setlist updates in real-time on Twitter at shows he's attended. Many times, his tweets beat out the official Phish From the Road account, if even by just a few milliseconds. And in this world of on-demand information where we all desire instant gratification for Phish updates, his feed is priceless. Once I got in touch with Scott, he was game to come on the podcast, but we had some trouble figuring out which show or jam to select. Scott threw out a lot of ideas and dates, but so many of them were taken that we had to go pretty far down the list until settling on segments of September 6, 2015 at Dick's, which featured the famous “THank You” encore. I'm glad that's where we ended up because there was so much to talk about in this fun show, even just in segments. Phish's rich history at Dick's, themed shows, and even surprising encore stats, plus more, are all touched on today. So let's join Scott to talk about Bye Bye Foot, long awaited bustouts, and why themed setlists mean so much to us, as we discuss Phish's performance on September 6, 2015 at Dick's Stadium in Commerce City, Colorado

I am thrilled to bring you the first episode in a new series of talks we call This Is Orlando - Corner Office. The series is sponsored by my friends at Hylant and will feature Hylants own Client Executive Rachel Dobbs as my co host. In addition to her work at Hylant Rachel has served our community well over the past 5 years including her stint as Chair for the Seminole County Tech. Association and her involvement in the chamber as well as a plethora of community meet ups. The goal for Corner Office is to shine a light not only on the executives themselves but more so their involvement in our community and their efforts to grow and build the region through philanthropic and community events. Our first episode accomplishes this goal and so much more. Our guest this month is Adam Scheinberg, VP Information Technology at Massey Services Inc. and Vice Chair of the Central Florida Tech Alliance. In addition to these he also serves as the President of the Mockingbird Foundation and serves on the board for the Orlando Repertory Theater. If that’s not enough be sure to ask him about his work with Phish and Umphrey’s McGee, two of the most visible and prolific jam bands working today. A subscriber to the " What you give is what you get” school of philosophy he also manages to find time to spend with his wife and kids and when not working on behalf of our community will most likely be found checking out some live music or theater. Watch for future episodes of Corner Office around the middle of each month and future episodes of This Is Orlando around the first. Be sure to subscribe to This Is Orlando on iTunes and Google Play or wherever you get your podcasts. If you are feeling really adventurous like us on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram For information about sponsoring or becoming a guest on the show contact me at rwcoble@gmail.comMy thanks to Rachel and Carlos for their dedication and hard work. A special shout to my pals at The Orlando Game Space and Chad Hoover for providing the room to stretch out and get it done. We love what you are doing at the Game Space, keep up the great work. Doing this show is fun and we hope you enjoy what you hear. Get involved and help us spread the word about what a great community we are a part of. I hope to hear from you.
Episode 63 features Adam Scheinberg, who wears and has worn many hats in his life. Adam is the architect of Phish.net (as you know it today). He also did a lot of the masterminding of AllThings.Umphreys.com and does a major portion of the web work for them. If that somehow isn't enough for you (because it wasn't for Adam!), he is also the president of the Mockingbird Foundation.Adam was directed to me by Brando Rich of Cash or Trade (you may remember him from episode 54). Adam had helped with some of the initial frameworks for the CashorTrade site and their coding, so it was cool that Brando thought to recommend him for the podcast.Born and raised in Connecticut, Adam's family actually originated from the state of New York. Some of his family still resides in Connecticut, while he has actually moved down that coast a bit to reside in Florida. He starts off with some pretty astounding quick hits about his Grandfather and his life.Adam was set to follow in his own Father's footsteps: becoming a lawyer. He tells about the day that he was set to turn in his paperwork to apply for law school. He got some serious cold feet on what his previous plan for life had been and that became every bit the life-changing event that it sounds like. This path change ended up leading to Adam taking some time off to head out of the U.S., following Phish on their European tour in 1998 after he graduated college. Looking forward to "an adventure that had no direction", Adam packed his bags and headed off alone to travel to Europe.Following his amazing time in Europe, meeting some people who would re-enter his life later down the road, Adam entered the world of computer programming. His disdain for the setlist randomizer on Phish.net led to him reaching out to offer to fix it for them. This became, really, the catalyst for him eventually taking on a complete re-write of the Phish.net website. He originally started kind of toying with the site while Phish was on hiatus. Coincidentally, their decision to reunite came while Adam was working on re-tooling the site. The powers that be contacted Adam, essentially asking him how much longer it would take for him to have the site reconstructed and ready to go.Adam shares my respect for Umphrey's McGee and said "they are a band not afraid of taking technical risks". He talked a little bit about having written the tools to specifically help the band write their setlists. I have always been very real and forthcoming about how much I love what the band and their management does. They are imaginative, they are extremely thoughtful about their fans, they think way outside of the box and they love to keep it fresh.I loved hearing the stories that Adam told about the band and their dedication to their craft for what they play onstage at their shows, as well as for the product they deliver overall to the fans. I shared a story of my own from an LA show that I got to spend some time backstage with the band before the show and how a tease made its way into a song that night and how I got to see it all take shape. A special moment that I don't take for granted at all. After working our way further into his professional life, we made our way through his personal and family life as well. Adam talks about meeting his wife, their marriage and quickly starting their family. We evolved into talking about TV and movies with our kids and some of the things each of us have lucked out with our kids watching that isn't as painful as, say, Caillou (not really at all sorry, Caillou). It took us a while to get to it, but Adam talked about his move into the Mockingbird Foundation. He created some goals for the foundation and eventually made the tough decision to step down from Phish.net. I'm shortening this (that's what the episode is for, people!), but eventually this all just led to Adam becoming the President of the Mockingbird Foundation. Some of the stories he tells about grants that he has been able to be a part of with the Foundation are completely... Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/daddyunscripted.
