As we count down to episode 300, we continue to revisit some of our favorite episodes. This episode, recorded in a very dungeon-y Philadelphia Airbnb (you can see the filming of this episode on our YouTube channel!), features Alison planning a momcation where kids are very, very, very much not allowed. Parent hard, play hard? Lulu also crams a bunch of activities, eating, and event production into a day in Burlington, Vermont. Both Alison and Lulu manage to maximize their fake budget of 10K a day! We just returned from our second trip to Minnesota for the Care for Caregivers Retreat hosted by The More Than Project and Finding Coopers Voice. Hear about our trip, the speakers, how important it is to book that retreat, a dance party, our photo shoot, and our first live podcast recording. To say we are proud of how it went and all we have accomplished over the past two years doesn't fully express all the feelings over the weekend. There is something special about being together in person. Also, listen in to find out why this episode is called "You're Not Melissa!" On this solo episode, Steph is talking about the "3 stages of the momcation": anticipation/preparation; the actual trip; the dreaded reentry. Anticipation: the week or two before the trip when you lose your mind because you need a break SO badly and are SO close and start imagining all the things that could go wrong to ruin your vacation. The actual escape: Sweet relief! The exhale. This is the part when you realize you have zero responsibilities and you can enjoy absolute freedom and just BE. The reentry: This could potentially be a time when you integrate all the peace and rejuvenation back into your daily routine, but let's be honest. It's usually a depressing shitshow. What would happen if we got away without our kids—either alone, with a partner, or with friends or siblings—more often? Would we have the same kind of desperate need to escape? Would it make anticipation and reentry less brutal? Our hectic and overwhelming lives make the contrast between getaways and reality painfully noticeable. Steph asserts that we definitely need vacations to escape reality from time to time, but that it would help if we built in more gentleness, relaxation, and yes, even decadence, into our daily lives to minimize the whiplash effect of reality vs vacation. In this solo episode, Steph is talking about momcations again—one of our favorite topics on this show. Our guests Laura and Lucy both took completely solo trips without their kids, but many moms travel with girlfriends, siblings, or their partners. Steph was able to skip town with her husband for their annual kid-free mountain weekend, and she noticed some things about the before, during, and after. If you've ever lost your damn mind worrying that the vacation you desperately needed was going to be ruined, or had a nervous breakdown upon the dreaded re-entry, this is the episode for you. In this episode, we cover:Lucy is extremely clear on what it takes to balance running a business AND homeschooling her three kids: delegate, ask for help, and expect your partner to step up. Bonus if you can do those things with minimal guilt and being totally ok with knowing that is what needs to happen to pursue your passion like Lucy does—she is a rockstar! We do a deep dive on guilt and why it's so hard to let go of. Lucy shares her tips on sharing the household burden without taking on guilt that she should be doing more by herself (plus a rant by Steph that husbands don't "help/babysit" and that generations of systemic dysfunction around gender roles is what got us into this mess...

Have you ever called up your friends and said let's go somewhere for the weekend? The Table for Five ladies took a take a trip to Minnesota for a special weekend. We talk about what it takes to prepare to leave our children for some much-needed time alone. How sometimes there can be some residual feelings from our kids upon our return and that mom life doesn't stop just because we are away. We share our experiences meeting each other for the first time in person and how amazing it truly was. How we hoped that everything would just fall into place as it does when we chat online and it did. It was a fun-filled, magical weekend. To all the other moms we were able to spend time with over the weekend, we are so grateful for the support and love that was given to us during our time away. To our friend, Kate Swenson thank you for hosting and making our friendship really come full circle by being able to meet face to face at your first Mother's Day event. Our recommendation is that every Mom should fly or drive to another city to meet up with some other Moms who understand your parenting journey. Also, eat all the carbs because you deserve it. It is ok to say I need this trip for me. This episode is sponsored by Sense-ational You use our code TABLEFORFIVE for free shipping Sense-ational You. Because fashion is for all. This episode featured a lot of discussion on why you want a Real Estate agent with more than just a license. Sasha Shanner brings the added strength of a husband who is a bankruptcy attorney who helps give sound guidance when drastic changes are needed. As we know, Bryan Garrity is a JD so he brings that law background and arsenal to his clients' aid. It was a great exchange, plus the usual rants and warmth you expect from Big Daddy Live. Some of the quotable highlights are below: Bryan: ...but I want people to understand if there was no Madonna, there would be no Britney. If there was not Britney, there'd be no Gaga. I mean, the list could go on. You have to fill me in on who the young ... like Billie what's her name? Morgan McGuire: Eilish. On interest rates of the past: Sasha Shanner: Remember those stories your parents told you. I bought it when it was 18%. I have to hear it all the time. And they still bought a house, and they used it as a building block to buy another house, and they refi'd when the rates went low, and there's just a cycle of it. It's really natural. Bryan: ... if you're in the market and you're ready, it's a great time to buy. Let me preface it by saying that. I shouldn't say it's a great time to buy, everybody go out and do it, because for some individuals it's circumstantial at the end of the day. But I think if most people stood back and looked at what they pay in rent. On the market crash and how this group adjusted to the changes: Sasha Shanner: With a newborn and not having a job, and then my husband who is a bankruptcy attorney, his phone starts ringing off the hook. I said I'll come help you. I know how to manage a team, I can build a little ... I'll help you basically. At that point it was just help. Just help him. He was busy. Then that turned into ten years of running his office. In the height of the bankruptcy, we were filing about 40 to 50 cases a month. We had a couple paralegals and another lawyer. We had a whole team. It was just sometimes you ride the wave, and that was what I had in front of me at the time and I made the best of it. Bryan recalling how he got into real estate: "When everything crashed on the finance side, people were coming wanting to refinance, can you represent me for this on the litigation side? Nope, nope. I got out of that (legal industry) for a reason. However, I'm like wait a minute. There's a way to make this work. Who is negotiating these short sales? That's how it started. Sasha Shanner: Short sales were a really good opportunity in that time. I'm doing three short sales right now. It's a lot of coordinating. It's not your average thing for real estate agents. For me, it's very comfortable for me, because that's the background I came from of that distrust, but I almost think that it's not harder, but if you haven't done it ... like anything. Bryan's Rant: I hate when I call an agent ... This bugs me, and boom, you get a text like two seconds behind it. So wait? You could not have picked up that ... You texted. It's not like those custom ones. It's one that they attached on there, so you had enough time to get your little fingers and go tappy-tappy, you couldn't pick up the phone and go, "Hi, this is dumb ass. Can I help you?" I'm sorry, she's much more put together than I am this way, but I would call them dumb ass. She'd be like, yes sir or ma'am. You guys get that, right? Pick up the phone! The other part about real estate that bothers me that some people don't understand or seem to give credit for is like this is a huge emotional component in people's lives. You will have emotions whether they be good, bad, ugly, love, anger, whatever, you've been in the house for ten years, do not tell me you're not going to have some kind of emotion rolling out of there. Bryan's biased opinion: I always think the tall, beautiful gals like you really make an imprint. (his guests today are in the 6 foot+ range). Plug for a friend: A buddy of mine, we did a segment last week with Melissa Sofia, she's amazing. She's a broker of Avenue Home Collective, that's her real estate company, and she's doing a thing called Momcation. Mothers are supposed to mother like they don't work, and work like they don't mother. That is so true. I think that from a societal standpoint that is a true statement. Sasha Shanner had her own rant: And a double standard. I think it's hard, too, being a realtor, because sometimes, and it could just be in my own head. This is a profession. I show up for work every day. I mean, I get dressed, I have a certain amount I need to make for my family, I don't take it lightly. The hard thing is sometimes, and I love all these people, but I'll have moms come up to me and go, I'm going to get my real estate license because it's a great thing when you have kids. You have so much time. You're just so free because you're a realtor. And I'm like actually it's like totally opposite. If I had a 9-to-5, I would be able to manage so much better, but when I'm trying to make dinner and negotiate a contract, tell my kids, it's hard. I think it's harder than if I were just like ... Do you know what my dream job is? Be a checker at Costco. I could just be like checkout beep, beep, beep. I'm sure I'd be bored in two days, but sometimes I'm like wow, that's just like you don't really have to think. Bryan: A lot of them have no idea about a myriad of things that to me is shocking. Which they have hired us to handle their biggest asset all day, and to me, that's an honor, that's a privilege. These people need to be protected. Sasha Shanner: I just feel like there are so many resources, so it doesn't matter how long you've been in the business it's that you're humble enough to ask for help or get the resources or have the second pair of eyes. A reminder from Sasha on the need to set limits, boundaries with clients and their thinking everything is 911 at 3 am: You're tired. I mean, you need fuel. If you're truly doing transaction-based real estate and you're reading contracts and you're doing negotiations and you're tracking down some agents that won't call you back, and you finally get a hold of them, and you're like getting that done, I feel like you have to kind of know when you are your best, otherwise you make mistakes. That means refueling, shutting it down to reset. Bryan admits: If you want more escrow, just schedule a vacation. Everything will blow up as soon as you leave town. Never fails. Never miss an episode! Follow Big Daddy Live here on this site, or see our live shows on Facebook >

While Beth lives it up on her solo vacation to the Cayman Islands, Peter whips the kids into shape with the power of silence, clear boundaries, a strict bedtime and (more than) a little help from Grandma. Despite being incredibly helpful with the kids Peter’s mom refuses to be a guest on the podcast and he’s forced to interrupt Beth’s vacation for a last minute recording, which she is, of course, MORE than happy to do. He then calls his best friend Nick for a spooky Would You Knows scenario. And just when you think that one episode of talking about different names for vaginas is enough Peter and Beth talk about it a whole lot more. Happy Mother’s Day to all my mama’s out there. I hope your day was full of love and family. And today’s topic is right in line with Mother’s day and self-care. I know you’ve heard it before… You need to take care of yourself. Well, how do you do it? For me, it’s daily. I give myself 5 minutes to meditate, eat good food, move my body and sneak in a little guilty pleasure screen time. But once or twice a year I like to take a momcation. What is a momcation? It’s a vacation from being a mom. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a mom but sometimes I need a break. A momcation can be anything really. It could be having the kids in school or daycare or at a friends house and staying in bed all day with Netflix. It could be leaving the kiddos with dad for a few hours on the weekend and getting a massage and going to lunch. It could be girls weekend or anything that gets you back to feeling like you and just a mom stuck on the mom hamster wheel. My momcations usually consists of me going to a hotel for at least one night and getting some sort of pampering done. The hotel is key because I want to sleep! I want 8-10 blissful uninterrupted hours of sleep. Just that makes me feel like new person. I’ll go by myself or take a friend but either way, it’s a break. I started this a few years ago when we were doing a somewhat large renovation in our home and there were always people in and out. Plus, there were so many decisions to make that I wanted to crawl into a hole and hide. So when it was finally done, I used points and booked a hotel downtown for a night and massage for the next day. It was magical. I had so many ideas and did so much planning for my business it was crazy. Now, I don’t always take my computer and do work but when I’m feeling like I can’t get anything done in my home office and want to get in a few hours, I’ll definitely take it. I actually think it’s vital in your mommy life and business life to take a break from the routine and put yourself into a different environment for a little while. That’s when inspiration has a chance to flow. I come back refreshed and de-stressed. I find that my scary mommy side of me stays at bay for a while and that I can be a calmer better mom. Please give this a try and I want to hear what your experience was and if you love it as much as I do.
