Welcome back to The DC Beer Show, your go-to podcast for all things local brew and beyond! In our latest episode, "Random Acts of Brewing Kindness," hosts Michael Stein, Jacob Berg, and Jordan Harvey dive into some frothy conversations with special guests Branden Roth and Steve McIntyre from RAK Brewing. It's an episode brimming with brewing wisdom, heartwarming community vibes, and a few chuckles along the way!We kick off with Jacob and Michael reminding everyone about the sizzling summer events happening around DC. They can't stress enough—stay hydrated, folks! If you're heading to events like Suarez at Shelter hosted by the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, remember your H2O and, of course, blast that AC.Branden Roth takes center stage to share his journey through the brewing world, stemming from his stints at Sapwood and Flying Dog to shaping his beer vision for RAK Brewing. He spills the hops on the importance of cleanliness, creativity, and how he juggles equipment constraints while pumping out top-notch hazy IPAs, sours, and mixed fermentation beers.RAK Brewing is not just about tasty beers but creating a welcoming space. Steve shares their intent behind their name, "Random Acts of Kindness," which aligns with their mission to build community spirit in Frederick, Maryland. They've even revamped their taproom for the coziest beer-drinking experience, where good conversation flows as freely as the brews. The episode bubbles over with excitement as Branden teases upcoming collabs and events, like a lager and a sour beer bursting with local berries. And don't miss Puckerpalooza, where they'll release a dazzling array of 12 different sours. The hosts can't hide their enthusiasm (or envy) for these intriguing concoctions! The hosts also highlight some killer events in the pipeline, such as Hellbender's boiler-installed party, Bluejacket's cask beer offerings, and the formidable Snallygaster festival. They don't miss out on singing praises for bus drivers and chat about enhancing transit for better brewery hops in Frederick. To cap it all off, there are shoutouts to charity events, fundraising efforts, and ways RAK Brewing is giving back to the community. It's all about beer, community, and kindness—what more could you ask for?So grab your favorite cold one, pull up a chair, and enjoy another exciting episode of The DC Beer Show. Cheers! There is reason for cautious optimism for breweries amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Richard speaks with three guests about how the recent signing of the CARES Act will help breweries, how breweries and restaurants are quickly adapting to the new market, and what publishers are doing to help struggling breweries. The Brewers' Association Looks to Build Upon the CARES ActBob Pease, President and CEO of the Brewers' Association (BA) gives Richard his thoughts about how the CARES Act could help craft breweries during the coronavirus pandemic. He lists several potentially beneficial provisions of the CARES Act for BA members: SBA Emergency Loans could be enormously helpful in keeping businesses afloat; Employee Retention Tax Credit and Payroll Tax Delays could help maintain brewery employment and cash flow; $1,200 payments to most Americans could result in an increase in consumer purchases of craft beer; and  Excise tax waiver on alcohol to make hand sanitizer could provide financial incentive for breweries to help assist their local communities. BA is also hosting Power Hours to educate its members on how to take advantage of these provisions, which are expected to provide much-needed support to craft breweries and brewpubs that generate most of their revenue from in-store salesBA's next lobbying target is to include a $900 million tax credit in the next Congressional stimulus bill to help breweries, distributors, and retailers cushion the losses from unused bottled and canned beers that will likely expire during the pandemic. And, most importantly, YOU can still support your local breweries by ordering delivery/pick up beers and buying gift cards and merchandise.Neighborhood Restaurant Group Consolidates Resources to Deliver Food and AlcoholGreg Engert discusses the Neighborhood Restaurant Group's (NRG's) new effort to provide high-quality food and beverages to DC, Alexandria, and Arlington called “Neighborhood Provisions” (check out if you live in one of its delivery zones). The Neighborhood Provisions online platform offers beer, wine, spirits, hot meals, grocery items, and more from many of NRG's 20 locations. All items are locally made and distributed. And, most importantly, it is keeping many employees on the payroll.NRG's new platform is hosting several fun initiatives in the coming weeks. For example, local DC chefs will be preparing special family-sized meals on select evenings. NRG will also hold flash sales from some of its breweries, including Bluejacket and Churchkey. Engert believes that Neighborhood Provisions's new offerings will continue beyond the pandemic.  Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine Is Offerings $100,000 in Advertising GrantsJohn Bolton of Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine is doing his part to keep craft breweries afloat. His magazine is issuing $100,000 in advertising grants across its online and print platforms for craft breweries negatively impacted by COVID-19. Craft breweries have until April 7, 2020 to submit applications for individual grants worth up to $5,000.Bolton is also considering offering micro-grants for some small craft breweries that would benefit from smaller, more targeted advertising campaigns. He sheds invaluable light on the benefits of having so many irons in the fire, weighs in on the changes he's seen in craft beer culture since starting with NRG (spoiler alert: they're not all good), and explains why we should all be drinking more cask beer. How does authenticity drive success? Philz Coffee CEO Jacob Jaber and Neighborhood Restaurant Group Beverage Director Greg Engert join Debbie and Billy Shore to discuss good coffee, craft beer and how to build businesses that are part of the fabric of their communities. Both guests cite authenticity - in the people they hire, the products they serve, and the experiences they provide for guests - as the basis for the success of their organizations. “The best service is when it’s done from the heart and authentic,” Jaber believes. Engert thinks that just having craft beer on the menu is not enough. “The hard part is echoing the passion of the producer through service and product knowledge,” he says. “The flavors become more vibrant when you wed the intellectual to the more visceral pleasures of drink.” Both guests built their businesses with community in mind. Jaber’s father started Philz out of his grocery store in San Francisco and now they have 48 stores and growing. “If you want to do it right, you have to not worry about scalability and just focus on excellence,” says Jaber. Engert agrees. “[They] are places for people who live near each other to get together, share food and drink and get to know each other and learn from each other,” says Engert of Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s 19 establishments. Tune in to this conversation and hear the passion that these two guests bring to their crafts, their customers and their communities.

When so many things feel out of our control in this world, how can we provide tangible help to people in need? Changemakers Michael Babin (Neighborhood Restaurant Group, Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture) and Meghan Ogilvie (Dog Tag, Inc., Dog Tag Bakery) are giving people skills and tools to find meaning and purpose. In this episode of Add Passion and Stir, Babin and Ogilvie describe what drives them to serve their communities and bring opportunities to deserving kids, adults and military service members. “The people who need good food the most are the ones least likely to ever have it show up on their plates,” says Babin. To address this need, his nonprofit Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture brings mobile farmers markets to low-income neighborhoods, runs farm camps for kids, and trains military veterans as farmers. His 16 Washington, DC restaurants also source their food from sustainable farms in the region. Ogilvie’s Marine father once told her: “You’ll find your way to serve.” She found it in Dog Tag, Inc, a nonprofit with a fellowship program for military service members, spouses and caregivers that offers a Certificate in Business Administration from Georgetown University and real-life work experience in their bakery. “We are igniting the human spirit and finding purpose again,” she says of their graduates. Dog Tag Bakery also sources much of its supplies from veteran-run businesses in the DC area. Don’t feel helpless – be empowered to help on-the-ground organizations like these provide real help for people in need in your community.
