I'd love to hear your thoughts - send me a text hereDanny Inouye wanted to be a doctor when he grew up - specifically, he wanted to be a surgeon. When he was a senior in high school he was a Red Cross volunteer. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he saw the planes flying over Honolulu and rushed to an aid station where he treated civilians injured by falling anti-aircraft shells. As soon as he could, Danny enlisted in the army and was sent to Italy with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The war shattered his dream of becoming a doctor but a fellow wounded veteran, Bob Dole (yes, that Bob Dole) told him of his plan to become a lawyer and a politician in Kansas. Danny liked the sound of that, returned to Hawaii and entered politics as well. Little did he know he would become arguably the most influential politician in the history of Hawaii, whether the Kingdom, the Republic, or the State. The Ghosts of the Pacific Theme is Ukulele and Love Birds by emjaydabayou, with a few Waves of Hawaii added for ambiance. The Ghosts of the Pacific Transition music are some Uke Chords by turkitron. The outro music this week is the DC Area Hardcore Punk band Marginal Man's Missing Rungs. Leaders today face the significant challenge of connecting with their employees and effectively recognizing and leveraging their unique talents. This often results in disengagement and underperformance. As the millennial generation, which highly values authenticity and compassion, becomes the dominant force in the global workforce, this issue becomes even more pressing. Traditional leadership styles frequently fall short, leaving employees feeling unrecognized and disengaged. The solution lies in adopting a more compassionate, gift-centered approach to leadership. By embracing and acknowledging the unique strengths of each individual, leaders can foster a more connected, motivated, and effective team. Susan Inouye's proven track record as an executive coach in transformational change has positively impacted over 600 businesses in 40 industries. A recognized expert with millennials, she was instrumental in taking a revolutionary method called Sawubona Leadership (Zulu for “I see you”) and is being used globally because of its capacity to unite all generations through their gifts, passions and purpose. She is the bestselling author of Leadership's Perfect Storm: What Millennials Are Teaching Us about Possibilities, Passion and Purpose.  In this episode, Susan shares the importance of recognizing and leveraging individual gifts within an organization to foster a more engaged and productive workforce. She emphasizes the need for leaders to practice self-awareness and vulnerability, particularly in the context of working with millennials and Gen Z, who value authentic and compassionate leadership. She talks about the concept of "gift-centered praise," which focuses on acknowledging the underlying strengths behind employees' actions to encourage broader application of their talents.    What you will learn from this episode: Discover the necessary core shifts in leadership that will be a game changer in the workplace Find out how these three simple yet profound principles of Sawubona Leadership drive significant positive outcomes Listen to Susan's spot coaching and discover practices that develop heart intelligence and intuitive knowing to help you make decisions more effectively and avoid staying too long in unsuitable roles   "The shifts that we have to make as leaders are, and we say this in Sawubona leadership, is number one, we have to go from control to connect and receive." - Susan Inouye   Valuable Resources: Free 15-Minute Executive Coaching Session. A: Millennials want compassionate leaders who see and accept them for who they are. And while men can employ it, women are more attuned to compassion.   Key Takeaways: "It's not about the practices in their life, it's the practices integrated in their life that actually gets them to do it and transform in the way they do." - Susan Inouye "My execs have found, when you see and accept someone for who they are, they see and accept you for who you are. And a different conversation unfolds. It's not one of us lecturing to each other, but one of us listening and learning from each other." - Susan Inouye "In its simplicity, the three things of Sawubona, if you connect and receive, if you see people's gifts, if you create a culture where people feel a part of something greater than themselves, so many things can happen." - Susan Inouye   Ways to Connect with Susan Inouye: Website: http://susaninouye.com/ Book: Leadership's Perfect Storm: What Millennials Are Teaching Us about Possibilities, Passion and Purpose   Ways to Connect with Sarah E. The California AAPI Legislative Caucus committed to teach AAPI history and funded an initiative as anti-Asian hate crimes have risen since the COVID pandemic. The project brings together distinguished scholarship, open access technology and ethnic studies pedagogy. She is excited about this opportunity to deepen and provide  comprehensive public knowledge about who Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are, which is highlighted through four foundational themes: global capitalism and migration; war and empire; race, power and identity; and community-building and social justice.

Join us for this book club chat as we interview author Dr. Charles Inouye about his beautiful memoir, Zion Earth Zen Sky. He details the experiences from his life as a child growing up in rural Sigurd, Utah. As Japanese-Americans, his family eventually settled there after his parents met at an internment camp following Pearl Harbor. His religious backgrounds include a family culture of Buddhism, and then a conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. Though he began working along side his dad as a farmer, Dr. Inouye eventually left the farm to serve as a missionary in Japan and discovered the many beauties of the Japanese traditions. For anyone immersed in skateboarding during the late 1970s, Tom "Wally" Inouye remains an indelible figure. Among his numerous magazine covers, his three iconic Skateboarder covers stand out as hallmarks of his influence. Born in Los Angeles on January 22, 1959, Wally's journey into skateboarding began in 1967 when he repurposed his sister's roller skate wheels into a makeshift board. In '73, Wally earned the nickname "Wally" after inventing the wall ride, a revolutionary move that would shape the sport. In '76, Wally turned pro and signed with Sims, dominating magazine coverage unlike any other at the time. He even pulled off back-to-back Skateboarder covers in '77, cementing his place in skateboarding history. Wally ingeniously launched Inouye's pool service in '76 a clever ploy to gain access to backyard pools for skate purposes! By posing as a legitimate pool service, Wally and his friends could drain the pools, skate, and then refill them without arousing suspicion. This also inadvertently provided Wally with valuable intel on prime skate spots.Wally's passion for sideways sports extends to snowboarding, which he embraced early on after forming a solid friendship with his sponsor Tom Sims.  Wally was even lucky enough to test out the first snowboards made by Tom Sims! Wally instantly fell in love with snowboarding after Tom opened his eyes to this new sport that turned his local mountains into giant skateparks and the best thing was snow was so much softer than concrete. In 2019, Wally's contributions were recognized with induction into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. His pioneering spirit helped shape both skateboarding and snowboarding into the vibrant lifestyles and sports they are today. Sit back and immerse yourself in the stories of this true legend, whose influence continues to resonate throughout the skateboarding and snowboarding communities.http://www.sk8ips.com/index.htmlhttps://wallyspeppersauce.comE-Stone -  @Stonies_Buds  Tom "Wally" Inoeye @ips_wallyhttp://www.sk8ips.com/index.htmlhttps://wallyspeppersauce.comBe sure to Subscribe to our channel on YouTube too https://www.youtube.com/@StoniesBudsand hit that like button! Thanks to all of our Patreon members for the support as well as being a part of the Stonie's Buds Family!!!  For more information on Patreon check it out here. https://www.patreon.com/StoniesBudsNew Stonie's Buds Merch at www.stoniesbuds.comSpecial Thanks--Moonchild- https://moonchildsnowboards.comGnomie Mugz - https://gnomiemugz.comStonie Budz Print Shop - https://307o96449135872.3dcartstores.comThanks so much for the support and we will see you next week!Support the show

Life's resistance is the topic of my guest Melissa Inouye's new book, Sacred Struggle: Seeking Christ on the Path of Most Resistance. Dr. Inouye works in the Church History Department, where she specializes in global Christianity and the global Latter-day Saint tradition. Her new book draws on both her professional expertise and her personal experience to think about why and how and what to do when life is just … hard. The book is divided into three sections: struggles that result from human bodies and agency, the sacredness of our fellow creatures, and the imperative to build Zion. In each case, Melissa shows how sources of resistance can transform us into beings more like our Heavenly Parents--wiser, more loving, and more aware of the entire human family. At the same time, she manages never to romanticize or minimize suffering. She's honest about anguish, but she's tenacious in clinging to our vision of Zion. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is Dr. Inouye's love of the scriptures. She turns often to scripture for truth and encouragement, and she has a way of finding new meaning in familiar words. I decided to organize our conversation around a few of the most interesting scripture discussions in the book, and I think you'll be surprised and enlightened at what she's found.

No one likes pain or poverty, bigotry or war, frustration or failure, disease or doubt, joblessness or homelessness or loneliness. That includes this week's “Mormon Land” guest, Melissa Inouye. The Latter-day Saint scholar has endured more than her share of heartache. She inexplicably lost her hair at a young age and then, at 37, the marathon-running mother of four, was diagnosed with colon cancer, an affliction she has been suffering from and through ever since. But as Inouye reminds herself and Latter-day Saints in her new book, “Sacred Struggle: Seeking Christ on the Path of Most Resistance,” a carefree, trouble-free world is not what humanity signed up for. An easy earthly existence, under Mormon theology, was Satan's plan, not God's. Divine design, Inouye writes, calls instead for agency, personal growth, compassion and caring for others, and “living a life full of life” — the good and the bad, the ups and the downs, the hopes and the hopelessness — as God's children learn to be more like their Heavenly Parents by following and finding Jesus. On this week's show, Inouye discusses this “sacred struggle” — including how she approaches the sometimes-problematic past found in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, her hopes for women in the faith's still-present patriarchy, and how she and other members find joy in imperfect lives, imperfect bodies, imperfect families, imperfect communities, an imperfect church and an imperfect world.

Far too many times in life, our narratives get told by others. Sometimes, being a passive passenger in the journey can feel the safest and most comfortable...until you realize the consequences of not speaking up on your or your community's behalf. Like misinformation, isolation, erasure, and even the exploitation of narratives to serve another's agenda. We're all becoming much more keenly aware of how this has been playing out for real all around us, and many of us are wondering how to approach it. In this episode, Minji sits down with Emily Inouye Huey, author of the moving YA novel "Beneath the Wide Silk Sky" - story about a Japanese American teenager named Sam who is navigating her young life in the wake of Pearl Harbor during WWII. Together they talk about Emily's personal process as a writer and as a Japanese American person unpacking very real family history that she's digesting. They go into the ups and downs of learning, embracing, and finding courage to share stories that mean so much, and how these stories can be vital contributions to culture, politics, and our own personal growth. Emily shares her thoughts on the recent book bans spreading across America, and what's at stake if we don't stand up for truth, accessibility and education. Inouye's research focuses on the history of global charismatic Christian movements, including the True Jesus Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her recent book, China and the True Jesus: Charisma and Organization in a Chinese Christian Church (Oxford 2019) explores the relationship between miraculous power and bureaucratic power in the history of a Chinese Christian Pentecostal church.
