This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring Ouachita Baptist Head Coach, Todd Knight. Coach Knight takes us on a deep dive into his program philosophy, highlights the importance of making practice count, and shares his personal relationship working with the AFCA. After 21 seasons - and 22 years - as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest-standing college head football coach in Arkansas. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. A proven leader, he guides the Ouachita football program with integrity and passion. In the 2019 season, Coach Knight took the Tigers to the Division II playoffs after leading them to an undefeated regular season at 11-0. The 2019 season was Ouachita's third undefeated regular season and the third straight GAC Championship. The Tigers hosted a DII playoff game for the third time since 2014. In the conference's inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to the Great American Conference championship, Ouachita's first conference title in over 25 years. The Tigers claimed the conference crown again in 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in all five championship seasons. He was also named Region three Coach of the year in 2014, 2018 and 2019. Knight boasts five Great American Conference Championships and 132 All-Great American Conference players in just nine years. The Ouachita football program is the only college football program in the state of Arkansas with twelve consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in ten of those twelve seasons. Prior to Ouachita Baptist, Knight spent time at Delta State and UTEP. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He has also served on the NCAA Rules Committee. Holy crap it’s cold. Like I know I live in Minnesota, but it’s November 12 and the daytime high wasn’t the issue, it was the five degrees this morning while getting the kids ready for school. I chatted with ODU wrestling coach Steve Martin this morning. The first thing he asked me was how the weather was. After an expletive-laced retort, I finally answered with the current state of the atmospheric conditions. You can get that update every day on my personal Twitter account at 9:30 a.m. Central Time. I moved to Minnesota for a job. I left Minnesota for a job. I came back to Minnesota due to the proximity of my wife’s family and the abundance of good wrestling in the midwest. It’s easier to do what I do from here than say, my hometown. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. Dual Meets: Falls were the difference as Graceland earned the big six from Trey Heckadon, Brennan Swafford and Drew Sams to lift the Yellowjackets to a 24-18 win over Division III Simpson College on Tuesday. Missouri Baptist opened up the season with a 30-18 win over American Midwest rival Hannibal-LaGrange. Jordan Sanders and Quentin Lawrence with falls there for the Spartans. They’ve got spirit. Montana State-Northern got its first dual win of the season as longtime rival and current Cascade Conference foe Southern Oregon came to town and went home unhappy. Returning national finalist Isaac Bartel registered a fall in 90 seconds at 197 pounds to highlight the Lights victory - yes, they’re the LIGHTS. Get it, Northern … Lights. I can’t seem to find any release or note, but apparently William Penn beat Waldorf by forfeit. Ok then. The top-ranked team in the NAIA women’s division, Life University, knocked off Limestone 36-10 in that school’s first ever home dual. Alex Enriquez, Aysia Cortez and Gabby Hamilton secured falls for the Running Eagles. Yes, the RUNNING Eagles. PROMO CODE WARNING There are approximately 63 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. I get asked all the time about what people need to start a podcast. TAKEDOWN CANCER It's time again to think about hosting a TakeDown Cancer event at one of your home meets, tournaments or youth events. Notables on the Docket for November 13: Cumberland University heads to Bristol to take on King, the University of the Ozarks will head to Little Rock to face Arkansas Baptist, Southern Oregon continues its Montana expedition by heading to Providence. In Pennsylvania, Shippensburg will head to Elizabethtown while Wilkes will head down the road to face the first-year program at Alvernia. A pair of duals in Ohio as Wilmington and Heidelberg will mix it up - YES, the STUDENT PRINCES of Heidelberg - and Thomas More, which went back to the NAIA this year, will face Ohio Wesleyan. In Sconny, that’s Wisconsin for the rest of yous, UW-Oskhosh will face off with UW-Eau Claire. Also in Wisconsin, a double header of men’s and women’s wrestling where Lakeland will face off with the first-year program at UW-Stevens Point before the men take to the mat and get reacquainted. FROM THE DWN: The first 23 teams in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll remained the same this week. Penn State, which won its 60th dual in a row, was No. 1 for the 34th straight week, while Army West Point entered the poll at No. 24, and Campbell and Purdue entered the poll, tied at No. 25. It’s the first time in school history Campbell has been ranked in the dual meet-based coaches poll, which dates back over 50 years. Davenport University in NCAA Division II announced it would become an associate member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in wrestling along with the men’s lacrosse program. While Division II qualifies through regionals, there are a number of conferences that sanction wrestling - wrestling members in the conference include Bellarmine, Drury, Indianapolis, Lindenwood, Maryville, McKendree and Ouachita Baptist. Bellarmine will depart soon as the school will transition to Division I. Five Point Move returns with another blog feature from its Greco-Roman outposts, Todd Allen gives us The Williams Word, a breakdown and update of the Greco-Roman happenings at Williams Baptist in Arkansas. Site founder Tim Hands doesn’t disappoint as he also brings us Matt Lindland’s weekly report. Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan discuss the Jaydin Eierman transfer and the future of Regional Training Centers on the most recent RUDIS Wrestling Podcast. Indian Hills Community College picked up the first commitment in school history for the fledgling women’s program as IAWrestle.com reports Chloe Clemmons has committed to coach Cole Spree’s team. The 130kg Greco-Roman European Games champion, Kiryl Hryshchanka, was stripped of his gold medal after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. I’m not going to try to pronounce. Sure, Hyrshchanka, I can say that, but Dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone, not so easily. Georgia’s Iakobi Kajaia is now the European Games gold medalist. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports a former Xavier High School wrestler and current University of Iowa student died on Monday according to an email distributed by the UI campus community. Jeff Vipond was a two-year captain of the Cedar Rapids Xavier High wrestling team. College journalism might be struggling some places, but at the University of Pennsylvania, it looks pretty fair to me, at least, from a wrestling standpoint. The Daily Pennsylvanian features freshman Michael Colaiocco, who’s already making an impact in Philly. The Knight Report, a Rivals-based Rutgers news site has posted that Peter Lipari, a 141-pound NCAA qualifier for the Scarlet Knights last season, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He recently lost his wrestle-off to highly touted freshman JoJo Aragona. The report doesn’t go into much detail other than he’s in the portal. On The Network Chad Dennis brings Alex Meyer back on The MatBoss Podcast to talk about the upcoming Chattanooga vs. Iowa dual at Carver-Hawkeye and a number of things about the Hawkeye program from Meyer’s perspective as an alum. First, Best or Different - How Ouachita Baptist paved the way for college wrestling in Arkansas This entire series has been telling you one story to set up another. On Episode 3, we look back at the impact of the first college wrestling program in Arkansas in nearly 50 years, Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Ouachita Baptist started wrestling in 2010. The nearest opponent within Division II was six hours west in Oklahoma. We meet with Rex Horne, then the President of OBU, to find out why his university was the place to start and the impact recurring figures Greg Hatcher and Mike Moyer had in the process. Moyer, Executive Director of the NWCA, explains the broader plan for college wrestling and how Ouachita Baptist was a crucial step to allow more schools to start the sport at the college level in Arkansas. Two things are notable today - first off, because of the generosity and sheer awesomeness of the Patreon contributors to the Mat Talk Podcast Network, I’m talking into my brand new Shure SM7B. Yes, it’s the microphone you see on a lot of these podcasts, including Joe Rogan, but I’ve had my eye on it since ever since, to quote my friend Cliff Fretwell. The other important thing is a happy birthday to my mom Jeanette back in Poquoson, Virginia. When I started this Mat Talk Online enterprise while I was a freshman in college, I probably spent more time updating high school wrestling scores than I did going to class. I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the night’s college wrestling scores and more. Wait. There is no PROBABLY in that statement. In my college years, while working at a newspaper, running a website, announcing tournaments on the weekends, there were two other choices, beer and books. It took me far too long to understand the importance that your GPA SHOULD be higher than your BAC. But we were all young and stupid once and my mom, she put up with it, supporting what was then a hobby and now it’s a sustainable career. Don’t think for a second I’m not aware of what that means. Speaking of my tenure in college, I guess there’s a third big thing. It’s been 5,201 days since I completed my last class, Communications Research Methods II at Old Dominion University. Today, I paid off the last bit of my student loans. 14 years and I’m no longer sitting with student loan dept. To my credit, there was a good chunk of that seven years I was in college that I paid my own way. But you’re not here to listen to me wax poetic about my glory days, especially since my next birthday is the big 4-0. As Gantry on TheMat Forum said earlier, today the only D1 game in town was Northern Illinois and North Dakota State. And if you’re a NIU fan, you could have done what Gantry did and check out after the first five weights. No. 22 North Dakota State stomped Northern Illinois 35-4 as the BiZon won nine out of 10 matches and closed things out with falls by Cordell Eaton and Brandon Metz. There was some notable news further west within the great state of North Dakota as the University of Mary, the MARAUDERS, had a packed house in Bismarck as they topped Minot State 31-12. Talk about an environment that Adam Aho is growing out there. Just check Twitter for UMary wrestling and you’ll see it yourself. Wild stuff. Even though both schools are part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, this was a non-conference matchup. Emmanuel, which is in its first year as a full member of Division II, knocked off Ouachita Baptist 25-22. Two forfeits and a fall at 165 were enough for the Lions to get past the Tigers, oh my! Dad jokes. A lot of inter-divisional matches on Thursday as Division II Ashland improved to 5-0 after dominating NAIA Lourdes 43-6. Returning Division II national champion Bret Romanzak got his championship ring and picked up a technical fall at 165 pounds. Going back to the Dakotas, Northern State, which is in SOUTH Dakota, topped Division III Concordia-Moorhead, which is in Minnesota, across the river from Fargo and the Bison Turf 23-14. Wins by Kolton Roth and Caden Moore down the stretch helped give the Wolves the W. Colorado Mesa beat Cloud County Community College 36-12, while Colorado School of Mines beat Northeastern Junior College 32-6. That’s a pair of Colorado Division II schools with wins over junior colleges, in case you’re counting at home. Earlier, we mentioned Lions and Tigers, well, to complete the whole circle of cheesiness, West Virginia Tech, the GOLDEN BEARS, beat Bluefield College 31-24. Bluefield is in its second year as a program, but this was the first official dual in program history. Out in Kansas, Benedictine beat St. Mary 27-18. The Ravens earned three wins by fall, nevermore. In the NAIA, sixth-ranked Menlo beat Southern Oregon 27-15, while the Menlo women beat Southern Oregon 40-4. Also in the NJCAA, No. 20 North Idaho knocked off No. 22 Iowa Western 30-19. This was close until falls at 197 and 285 by Hunter Gregerson and Connor Sullivan gave the Cardinals the win over the Reivers. YES, Reivers. What the heck is a Reiver? A river pirate. Google. North Idaho also upended No. 6 Iowa Central 20-19. Talk about burying the lede. There’s always some things you can’t quite believe when we talk about some of the smaller divisions. From the NJCAA-NAIA battle, which in case you’re wondering, those duals COUNT for the junior colleges, but they don’t count for the NAIA schools - yeah, NAIA rule about non-four year schools not counting for official records - well, NAIA Oklahoma Wesleyan, which started its program last year, but didn’t really get it off the ground until this year, won five of the six contested matches against Labette on Thursday. Those five wins were all bonus, four by fall and one by technical fall. Well, Labette picked up a fall and four forfeits. So do the math - A fall and four forfeits is 30 points. Four falls and a technical fall is 29 points. Ouch. Oklahoma Wesleyan won’t have a problem with numbers in the future, but that’s a tough way to lose. Neosho, by the way, beat both teams. Props Nick Nothern. No report as of “press time” on the Simpson-Lassen dual out in California and Life Pacific’s first ever home dual against Mt. San Antonio. On this week’s episode of Inside the Headset we speak with Joshua Eargle, Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach for Austin Peay State University. We discuss his diverse coaching background, the importance of establishing a winning program culture, the turnaround at Austin Peay, and how he balances coaching and family. Coach Eargle began his career as a graduate assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi (2003-2004) before getting his first full-time position at Ouachita Baptist as an offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator (2005). He returned to Southern Mississippi as an assistant offensive line coach (2006) before coaching the offensive line at Nicholls State (2007-2008) and Louisiana State (2009), and he was named the offensive coordinator at Arkansas-Monticello in 2010. Eargle crossed over to the other side of the ball when he accepted a defensive coordinator position at Hallsville HS (TX) in 2011 and served in the same position at Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2012. In 2013, he was named the head coach at East Texas Baptist and helped lead a turnaround that culminated with a conference championship in 2015. Eargle joined the staff at Austin Peay in 2016 as the offensive line coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator during the 2018 season. ...in which Rex and Paul chew the fat about the Battle of the Ravine and Rex's continuing attempts to get ESPN's Game Day broadcast to come to Arkadelphia for the annual football class between Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist, how Rex talked essentially non-stop for seven and a half hours during a recent football Saturday, pleasant college campuses in Arkansas, old Arkansas college mascots, the rise of cricket teams at Southern Arkansas University, how there used to be polo matches at Wilson, how William O. Darby's knowledge of polo got him friendships with important military leaders, the Wilson Café and nice developments around town, the Delta School, the Southern Barbecue Trail, Dixie Pig sauce, the Cream Castle in Blytheville, the jumbo pig sandwich, Rex and Paul's unholy quest to consume five pig sandwiches in one day, Paul's visit with Sidney Moncrief, comparing notes on barbecue places with Sidney, improvements in U.S. Highway 67 on the way to Imboden, and the remarkable apparent confirmation of one of Paul's usually crackpot theories by an independent observer (Jim Shenup), this one having to do with the claim that Hall of Fame baseball player George Kell was really from Imboden, not Swifton, as often said.
Episode 5 of Tech Talk features Kristy Bayer, head coach of the Golden Suns volleyball team, talking about the season thus far and Thursday night's Pack The Stands matchup against Ouachita Baptist!
A native of Tennessee and graduate of Oklahoma State University, Kevin Ward helped take Division II Ouachita Baptist from new program to national power. In 2014, he coached Ouachita Baptist to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships and was named the Division II coach of the year in just the program's fourth year. Now Ward is heading east to take over as the head coach at Army.On Episode 91 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Kevin Ward answers these questions and more:You're originally from Tennessee, how difficult was it for you to get exposure to the top programs? It's not very often a coach moves from the Division II ranks to the Division I ranks. What are some things you feel make you a guy who can maybe change the culture when it comes to hiring coaches?Ouachita Baptist was your first head coaching job on the college level and you built a program into a force in Division II and you did it without transfers. How much work goes into building a team to win quickly without relying on the quick fix.We had Kerry Regner from Williams Baptist on a recent episode of Short Time (shorttimepodcast.com/68) and he talked about the impact Arkansas businessman Greg Hatcher has had on his program already and they haven't even wrestled their first match. How instrumental was Hatcher in helping get Ouachita Baptist on board to start wrestling?Sometimes finding a job is knowing some of the right people in the right places. For you, that was a bit different, you knew some people, but they weren't necessarily where you think they'd be. Explain your route to Army. There's a lot of proud wrestling history with the Armed Forces, but when it comes to one of the biggest sports rivalries regardless of Sport, Army-Navy ranks near the top. Navy has OWNED the series in wrestling ... and it's not been close. Navy leads the all-time series 48-5-5. Since 2001, Navy's won them all. NCAA titles and All-American finishes are great, but how much are you going to want to beat Navy? What are your thoughts on the NWCA Convention?Follow Army Wrestling and Coach Kevin Ward on Twitter @Army_Wrestling and @CoachKWard
